Give Me Liberty of London (and Cupcakes)

Published in: Face of the Day (FOTD), MAC Makeup

Breakfast of champions!

Last night El Hub brought home some mini-cupcakes from a bakery he passes on his way home from work. :) They were red velvet, lemon and chocolate, and THIS is how I felt when I opened the box:

Frickin’ sweet tooth’s always getting in the way of the whole eating better thing, grrr!

I managed to exercise enough restraint (shocking!) to save two of ‘em for, um, my breakfast today, but I think the sugar messed with my brain. All I could think of was cupcake-inspired makeup looks, which lead to this pink attempt with a dash of purple.

Using products from MAC’s Give Me Liberty of London and MAC Too Fabulous, I started with a pink lip courtesy o’ Lip Pencil in Trimmed in Pink (a creamy pink from Too Fab), Lipstick in Petals & Peacocks (a creamy pinkish magenta) and Lipglass in English Accents (a creamy bluish pink), and because it reminded me of cupcake frosting I applied Beauty Powder in Shell Pearl (a shimmery golden peach) to my lips with my fingers.

Trying to keep the same color vibe for the eyes, I chose Eyeshadow in Dame’s Desire (a shimmery reddish purple) for my lids and Shell Pearl Beauty Powder in the crease…

I like how the purple kinda flashes when I blink. :)

Additional eye makeup used for the look: Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden (as a base all over the lid); LORAC Front of the Line Pro Liquid Liner (upper lash line); MAC Technakohl in Graphblack (waterlines); MAC Eyeshadow in Bough Grey and Shell Pearl Beauty Powder (smudged together along the lower lash line); and MAC Studio Fix Lash Mascara in Black (upper and lower lashes).

To bring it all together, I reached for a fan brush and lightly dusted MAC Powder Blush in Dirty Plum onto my cheeks. The color’s pretty dark and pigmented, so I used sheer layers and built it slowly, taking care to buff out the edges.

Last (but not least!), I added a sprinkling of shimmer along my upper cheekbones with the Beauty Powder in Shell Pearl.

What do ya think? Too draggy? Not draggy enough?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. What colors are you wearing today? Was anyone else feelin’ the pinks or purples?

I really like the pinks and purples together and you are making me want Peacocks and Petals lipstick. The Diry Plum blush is actually quite pretty once the “dirtiness” of the colour settles in grows on me, I tried it on today at the counter. From this collection, I picked up Blue India polish, Bough Gray e/s and Ever Hip l/s. I may just go back and get the birds and berries, primer and proper blush and Petals and Peacock lipstick. Speaking of breakfast for champions, have you read the book? It is a good book and I recommend it.

Lookin’ good, Karen! Almost as good as those cupcakes :P It’s not fair when you post food photos; you’re making the rest of us hungry!

I’d love to see Petals & Peacocks on its own on you! This look is super pretty, I love the colours you used. I only wish I could pull off pinks a bit better. Today was all about neutrals and peaches for me! I did a mini drugstore haul and got a Maybelline Colour Sensational lippie in Peachy Scene, so pretty!

Oh and I forgot about the cupcakes! It’s actually quite hard to concentrate on anything with those cupcakes on my screen. Oh and yay cos I finally found Nutella for sale, I’m so happy! Am I relating food to you now? LOL :D

What pretty, pretty cupcakes!!! And how sweet of El Hub to bring some for you!!!

I love the look on you — you look smashin’!!!

I think I am officially in love with the Beauty Powder in Shell Pearl… and I hate to say this but Dame’s Desire is on my list now….

I know I said no more eyeshadows but … its so pretty!!!

Today I rocked an orange look that I combined with a soft brown eyeshadow and brown liquid eyeliner – that was my ode to Spring: it cant come soon enough. Its cold here again!!!

    • Karen says:

Ohh, you know how I love me some soft brown. :)

Guess what? It’s rainy again here too, boo!

At least daylight savings is right around the corner. I can’t wait for the longer days!

How’s your night going so far, btw? I just finished eating dinner (leftover fried rice, so not sexy); now I think I’m gonna pop over to Marshall’s to look at their shoe section.

      • Nina says:

I really dont get what is holding up Ms. Spring! :D

My night was great – we walked, got Thai takeout and brownies and I read some. Im alternating Time Traveller’s Wife with a book called Summer Knight – which is part of the Dresden Files. Its a series about a wizard living in modern times and fighthing crime, supernatural or otherwise.

Today were about to do the grocery store dance, have lunch at a Polish place and spend time outdoors – its chilly but brilliant outside today!!!

How was the shoe section? ;)

        • Karen says:

I didn’t make it that far, boo! I pretty much stuck to the shirts and workout clothes… I need some motivation to start running again! Today I plan on hopping by… for some reason I’m kinda stuck on the idea of cage shoes. Dunno if I can pull ‘em off though, because I have really long toes, LOL.

That’s cool that you’re reading Dresden Files! El Hub is reading one of the books right now… apparently fairies are very naughty in the supernatural world, who knew?

          • Nina says:

Hahaha yep the fairies are very, very naughty. They also love pizza – which I found very funny!!!!

Ive been staring at cage shoes forever but I am toe shy LOL … but you should try `em on!!!

I need to find some good workout capris for the summer … maybe tomorrow!

          • Karen says:

Remember the time era before capris? There was a spell in the 90s where they were MIA!

I love the idea of cage shoes but maaaan my feet look weird in them! It’s like they make my toes all extra long!

  6. Tiffany says:

Love the makeup look! And you gotta love spouses who bring home cupcakes!

  7. Susie says:

I think the pinky purple eyeshadow combo looks aMAZing! I don’t think it looks draggy but rather sweet like those cupcakes. This is reminding me that I need to workout when I get home. I’ll try not to stop somewhere for cupcakes along the way now. :)

    Have a great weekend.

  11. Gummy says:

Oh my ! Totally beautiful! The cupcakes, AND your look, hahahaha! =) I love it – it looks classy and fresh. You are definitely ready for the rain to be gone! =)

I visited the MAC counter, and didn’t end up with Ever Hip…because I fell in love with the Perennial High Style lip glass and the Prim and Proper blush powder instead. =) And I took them home with me, hee hee…=) Although I would have gladly taken home Birds & Berries and Free To Be! =)

Bonus points for your El Hub – no wonder he’s a keeper! ^_^ My hubby will bring me egg tarts – have you had them? They’re these yummy little Chinese delicacies one can find in Chinese bakeries, or during dim sum. They’re (one of) my favorite desserts! =)
.-= Gummy’s last blog post… An Interview With Aiva =-.

    • Karen says:

I loooove those egg tarts. I miss the days of my 20-something metabolism, when I could eat HELLA egg tarts in one sitting with no consequences! Le sigh! I love ‘em especially with delicious hot tea.

      Now I want dim sum…

Anywhoo, how are you liking Prim & Proper Blush? Isn’t it great?

      • Gummy says:

Oh, I love it! I only have one other blush (it’s a pink based color), and a bronzer, so it’s nice to have variety for my cheeks, hee hee. =)

I am no longer 20-something either, and my hubby and I have found that we’re not as powerful anymore when we hit the All-You-Can-Eat Sushi bars, hahahaha…I used to eat tons of them egg tarts too, only now, I space all of them between days and weeks. We may all be getting a little older, but at least we can still be beautiful, yes? =)

Wait – you’re up in the SF area?? The Golden Gate Bakery is supposed to be FAMOUS for their egg tarts. Enough where a long line is there every morning when they’re made fresh. One day, I will journey there. But since you’re up there already, perhaps you can get a fresh hot one one of these days too!

I love the look – not too draggy! I wish I could wear those colors!

I came away with the medium make up bag, Frankly Fresh l/g and Shell Pearl beauty powder. I can’t believe I forgot to pick up Birds & Berries e/s!

  15. Elle says:

I had cupcakes for breakfast too :) thanks to my coworker, Ms. Pastry Chef-turned-clinical-reasearch associate.

I just placed my order on Nordstrom. I think I have to go back and get Dame’s Desire. I love Petals on you, Karen!

  17. Kylie says:

    Love this look!

I also absolutely ADORE LORAC’s from of the line pro eyeliner. I bought the last 5 my sephora had. its my go to eyeliner!

    Love your site, Karen!

    • Karen says:

I’m thinking I might have to buy a bunch of those liners too. Aren’t they fantastic?

      • Kylie says:

Definitely, and I’m not sure if they are going to keep them in their permanent line, but my sephora has stopped stocking them! I’m glad I got all of them that they had!

I’ve got my mom hooked on them too, and we’ve been scouting everywhere for more of them.

      • Karen says:

OH CRAP. It never occurred to me they might be LE… I just assumed they’d be there forever and ever and ever.

Time to start hunting and fishing, LOL!

  18. mmm that chocolate cupcake looks delicious. I love your eye makeup, it looks like cotton candy. The lazy in me decided to just go with neutrals today

You look amazing! I don’t think that it’s drag at all. I feel you. Today my friends and I enjoyed Philadelphia’s “Naked Chocolate’s” fondue for breakfast. It was amazing! If you’re in the area, check it out!!!

  20. Steph B says:

I was going to try to resist this collection but I absolutely love that shado combo on you. I usually wear purplish tones when I venture out of neutral zone, but even then I go for more neutral purples. Love BB Heather. But maybe I need some full on purple. And then of course I’d need some Bough Grey to round it out.

And thanks for showing how to make that lipcolor more wearable. Looks fab.

Any guy who brings home cupcakes is a keeper.

    • Karen says:

One of the reasons why I like this purple is ’cause it’s actually really wearable… it’s easy to blend, layer, and you can totally take it down a notch (as a soft wash) if you feel like it’s too BADA-BING on the eyes. :)

      How’s your Saturday going?

  21. Kate & Zena says:

Stop brain, stop brain. We do not need CUPCAKES. God, the pink cupcake looks so good (I hate chocolate cupcakes).

I wore Benefit’s Strut today. I’ve been feeling grey lately. And Stila Lip Glaze in Grapefruit. What really bugs me is that Stila doesn’t fill up those stupid pens all the way up with lipgloss and the twisty thing is so LOUD. I feel sorta bad shelling out $22 for a pen only half-full of lipgloss that has a clicker the volume of an atomic bomb going off when the class is taking a test and I need a lipgloss refresher (oh yea, that was only slightly awkward).

Oh yes, just so you can see the number Zena did to my brushes, I give thee The
    Brush Homicides

The good news is I have three brushes coming home soon (soon as in when USPS puts them in my mailbox).

You look fab! I love the wash of purple on your eyes. Those cupcakes are making me hungry!

  27. Meghan says:

so beautiful!! i have been looking for a bright pink lip for the last week and have been goin back and forth between a few, but this sold me on petals and peacocks! in fact, i’m gonna go buy it right now! thanks karen!

  28. Thais says:

What foundation/ powder combo were you using for these pictures? Your skin was looking better than ever. :)

    • Karen says:

      Hi Thais,

In the pics above I used:

Hourglass Mineral Primer (I really do think it makes a diff in the smoothness of the final look)
      Laura Mercier Oil-Free Foundation
A 50/50 mix of MAC Prep+Prime and Blot Powder buffed into the skin

  32. Alexandra says:

Then summer rose beauty powder. Porecelian pink msf. On my lips its a beauty rush lipgloss thats a gorgeous purple :)
