Facing the Day the MAC Makeup Way With a Teal, Brown and Blue Smokey Eye

August 1st, 2012 by Karen 33 Comments

“When the makeup calls, the girl must answer.”

That’s how I feel today, like I was lured by love to do something more special with my makeup than my plans today would otherwise warrant.

I think that’s one of the things I love so much about makeup, that you don’t really need a good reason to play with it. It’s just there, so why not?

Sure, so I got glammed up to swing by Safeway at lunch to get heirloom tomatoes and basil. It won’t be the first time I go grocery shopping all gussied up.

Actually, I didn’t do anything fancy at all. Just a teal, brown and blue smokey eye using some of my MAC favorites, like Tarnish Kohl.

This is one of my favorite MAC eye looks because of how easy it is, and because it’s a little different than a standard smokey eye with black or gray.

I call it my “peacock feather” eye look. 🙂

Starting with greenish black MAC Tarnish Kohl as a base, I smudged a small amount of MAC Club eyeshadow, a complex brown eyeshadow with blue-green duochrome, on top.

Then, in the outer corner, I added shimmery blue Deep Truth eyeshadow, also from MAC, so that when I turn my head, BAM! — a blue flash.

Well, at least that’s the idea…

Lastly, I finished with Tarnish along the water lines for a little extra depth.

Additional makeup worn in this look…

  • MAC Concrete Eyeshadow: Brows
  • Tom Ford Beauty Brow Sculptor in Espresso: Brows
  • NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base: Lids
  • MAC Haute & Naughty Too Black Lash: Lashes
  • NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer in Cuba and St. Moritz: Face
  • Hourglass Oxygen Foundation Powder in No. 4: Forehead, nose and chin
  • MAC Pro Longwear Concealer in NW25 and Care Blends Essential Oils in Grapefruit + Chamomile: Under eyes
  • MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Give Me Sun: Back of my cheeks
  • MAC Ambering Rose Blush: Apples of my cheeks
  • MAC Dazzleglass in Girl’s Delight: Lips

FUN!

It might be more of a fall look than summer, but eh — who’s keeping track? When the makeup calls, the girl (or boy) must answer. 🙂

How about you? What did you do for your eye makeup today?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Big congrats to the U.S. women’s gymnastics team last night! Way to go, girls!!

    Whoaaa this is SEXY!

Today I was trying to see how some long-wearing products fare in the subtropical weather, so I had Make Up For Ever 20E Aqua Shadow on for the inner half of my lids, Maybelline 24-Hour Color Tattoo in Bad to the Bronze on the outer half, and Urban Decay Busted on the outer v. I’m proud to report they hold up well against heat and humidity yaaay!

I didn’t do much eye makeup today, I’m just sitting in my freezing-cold office… i have Milani Liquif’eye Brown Eyeliner and DiorShow Mascara in Mitzah (it’s a pretty bronzy color, they have it on sale on the Sephora website for $14.50! I just got a sample of Lancome’s Hypnose Star that I want to try too, though.)

Both Tarnish and Club are great colors to have in your makeup kit! They’re incredibly flexible and fun. 🙂

Wow! That is fabulous. Club is one of my favorite ESs. I haven’t tried it this way before. Wish I had tarnish. But, I can try this out tomorrow using a black khol that I happen to have on hand.

Damn, girl! 😉 What a gorgeous look — very peacocky indeed. Love it!

    (P.S. I keep swatching Club in-store because it’s such a universally-adored shade, but I’m still on the fence. I

I have Blue Brown pigment (which is essentially Club in pigment form). I should do more with it. I won’t get a chance just yet: the upcoming shoot for GAZE Ezine will feature shimmery neutrals and glossy peachy-beige lips.

I also have both Blue Brown and Club, but they look quite different on me. They both have this reddish brown base, but Club is a lot more forest green where Blue Brown is a shimmery blue.

Anyway, I think this look would also work very well with Blue Brown (gorgeous shade!) 🙂

Gorgeous, I love smokey eyes. I did a soft smokey myself today. I combined a shimmery gold with a deep chocolate brown and a teeny tiny bit of black.

Today I am sporting a smokey yet simple eyelook. I used one of my Bare Minerals/Bare Escentuals eyeshadow duos, which has a dark shimmery brown color. I then used my Urban Decay Perversion eyepencil to line my eyes. I curled my lashes and added two coats of the Cover Girl Lash Blast mascara (orange tube). I used a light hand of the Mac Fleet Fast blush on my cheeks and one of my YSL nude colored lipglosses.

I love how “didn’t do anything fancy at all” looks so different on you than it does on me. HAHA! This actually doesn’t seem super-complicated but the finished product sure looks it. 🙂

Speaking of gymnastics, I caught a segment on Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel about a gymnast without legs (Jen Bricker). It was an amazing and very inspiring story.

This is an amazing look Karen! It really is so cool–from the front it’s already perfectly smudgy and sultry (and you nailed the shape!!), but then angled in the light, that flash of blue?! That’s killer

I am really loving this look! And I think I will have to bite the bullet and order some stuff from the MAC website, like MAC Club. MAC has some eyeshadows that are definitely necessities in my collection just because of the versatility (and duochrome, which I am a huge fan of).

I didn’t do anything with my makeup today, but yesterday I did a bright and sunny look with L’Oreal Infallible eyeshadows Eternal Sunshine and Endless Sea. They look great together! I lined my eyes with NYX Extreme Sapphire, and topped Extreme Sapphire with a glittery blue NYX liner, Crystal Aqua. I lined my waterline with Rimmel Exaggerate in Deep Ocean (it has some good staying power, I’ve tested it in hot and humid conditions). I really love your peacock feather look! I’ve done something similar but used blues and greens instead of pretty brown duochromes like Club.

I agree with you – there is no rule that says we should only gussy up when we’re going somewhere glam. (Plus, how else can you practice to ensure that when it matters, it’ll look good?) That being said, this look is wonderful on you!
