I finally wrapped my grubby little hands around MAC Heatherette Eyeshadow Trio 1 last weekend, and I have to say: I love this bad boy!
Sometimes, in trios and quads, one or two of the shades just aren’t up to snuff, but all three shades MAC chose for Trio 1 — a pink, green and black — work well together. That said, Mood Ring, the green shade (more of a teal) is definitely my favorite of the bunch.
For the green, pink and black smokey eye look below, I layered each of the shadows over MAC Pink Pearl Pigment (also part of the Heatherette collection). Layering Pink Pearl Pigment underneath these shadows creates an effect similar to how the colors of a peacock’s feathers can seem to change with the light. So purty!
Even though this eye pushes the envelope as far as its appropriateness for day wear, I wore it to the movies yesterday afternoon and didn’t feel out of place.
I gotta give my girl Jennifer, MAC artist extraordinaire, at my favorite counter big ups for urging me to try this trio. Thanks, Jen!

Happy Monday, cuties! I hope your week is off to a fab start. I leave for work in a couple minutes. I hope it’s not too crazy when I get there, oy.
I can’t wait for dance class tonight. We’re doing a jazz-inspired routine to a Danity Kane song (Damaged). I expect it to kick my booty!
What’s going on for today?

Looks great Karen. I got Trio 1 too. I tried one of the fun looks MAC has on there site where Soba is in the crease and Mood Ring is on the inner corner of the lid. It turned out really pretty too.
Hope you have a good day. It’s crazy here in Minnesota. It was 47 yesterday which was great (for us), but today we’re getting between 5-10 inches of snow! It’s coming down hard.Yuck.

Hi Lakahna,
What other colors have you paired it with? I’d love to hear about your combos!
Glosslizard says
Hi Karen!
What a lovely spring face! You look luminous! I’m really liking the Trio 2 as well! The middle pink shade is a good enough standard shade, but the pale pink and the blackened purple shades are outstanding!
Today I finally (as I have been threatening for some time) went to SF and picked up the Guerlain bronzer in Orient Sun and then the Chanel mascara in Emeraude! I knew it was going to happen sooner or later! I also gave your URL to my girl Marie!
Have a great day, and you rock that dance class tonight! 🙂
Susanne says
Thank you, Karen! Great look!
I ordered Eye Trio 1, too. Heatherette should come out here on Saturday (finally!) and the counter will ship it the same day. So I hope I will have my products at the beginning of next week. Yes, my brushes are all lined up and ready to go!
My day is already over – it is late here – It was just a normal day at work. I like relaxing in the evening with news about MAC LOL.
Karen says
Hi Melissa,
Yah, the teal and the hot pink flash of pigment may not be appropriate for all work environments (it’d probably be okay for creative places, but not for a law firm). Another more work-friendly look you can do is a light pink/black smoky eye (the black color really isn’t dark, it’s more of a grey). Apply the pink all over the lid, then a black pencil on the upper lash line (like MAC Smolder) and then on top of the pencil smudge Cloudburst on top!
I haven’t tried the second trio. While I love the purple shade in the trio, I think it the combo might just be too much for me, ya know?
Karen says
Do it, BeautyTalk! These colors would look fab on your skin tone. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Tonya,
Soba is one of my fave crease colors! That would look fierce with Mood Ring, so I can’t wait to try that next. I might layer Pearl CCB underneath, too! *drools*
Big ups to you for living in snow country (I can’t imagine, as I am a weather wimp). It’s 62 and sunny here and I’m chilly! How do you like living in Minnesota? I’ve never been there but some day I’d like to go to all 50 states so you’ll have to tell me the cool places in your state that I have to hit up!
Amanda says
I love it! the teal/black liner looks great. And i really like sock hop on you too.
I meant to add to the comments yesterday, but I agree with all the other posts, that you need to add “writes a great blog” to your things you do well list. I look forward to it everyday.
The dogs are Maggie (lab-pointer mix, an old lady of 9 1/2 years) and Sherwin (shar-pei mixed with something). Let me know if you want to see some pics (maybe email me-I don’t really have any on a website so I would have to send an attachment!) 🙂
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
I knew that bronzer was soooo going to be adopted by you sooner or later! 🙂 I’m intrigued by the Emaurade mascara… can you actually see the green in it? Oh, and thanks for referring me to Marie! Yay! LOL, so the reason why I am looking forward to dance tonight is because we’ve been doing this routine for the last few classes, and every time we do it I am sore the next day! It’s great ’cause I feel like I’m really working it out. Hmm… it could also be a sign that I’m getting too old for all the young people booty-poppin’ moves but oh well! Might as well work it while my knees/hips are still functional!!
Did you pick up anything else during your SF run?
Karen says
Hi Susanne,
Ohhh, hooray! Be sure to bust out Soft Brown eyeshadow and Soba when you play with Trio 1 — both really complement the trio’s colors. 🙂
Glad to hear it wasn’t too crazy for you at work. What do you do?
Karen says
Hi Amanda,
Yeah, I was kinda surprised how wowed I was with these colors. I really didn’t think I’d like ’em as much as I do. I’m glad my homegirl really pushed me to try it! Sometimes I need to remind myself to take my own makeup advice (try it all… cause it all washes off anyway!).
Awww, thanks girl. I’m glad you enjoy coming here. It’s fun for me, so I’m glad it fun for you, too!
Your dogs sound like cuties. I have a soft spot for labs/lab mixes, because our family dog before Shauna the Wonderdog was a black lab named Bell (he died a few years ago). Please send me a pic! My e-mail is on the about page. 🙂 I bet Maggie has an old-girl snout (the kind where you see lil’ flecks of white haired patches, awww)…

Do it, girl! Dunno if you’re a pigment girl, but Pink Pearl is also very pretty on it’s own on the lid and just into the crease!

Hey Karen,
I love Trio 1! I tried it this weekend and it was such a hit. The pink is pretty bombtastic and I like how you can play it up or play it down depending on the liner. M.A.C. hit the target … yet again.
And you look gorgeous!
Cheers!

oh, Glosslizard, I want to hear about the green chanel mascara too!
Karen, I sent some doggie (and one cat) pics to ya. Cool “about” section–informative yet humorous, just like the blog.
PeeChee says
Hey Girl!
I got the trio also and wasn’t too sure how I was going to pull this off without looking like I was going to a club. Then again, I don’t really care. ha ha. 🙂 I can’t even remember the last time I went out past 11pm since I had the kids. haha
Glosslizard says
Hi Karen and Amanda! 🙂
The Emeraude mascara is a deep, almost forest-y green with a hint of shimmer. It’s the waterproof Inimitable formulation. The stuff I tried on (over my regular black) was really flaky, but it was really the bottom of the tester tube, so I blame the consistency on that. The color is opaque (it totally showed over the black), deep enough to give that dark lash pop, and definitely green enough to enhance my eye color! Marie said that she usually uses a brown mascara and then tips it with the green, but with my eye color (blue-green with a tendency to pick up green tones in particular) she’d use it straight. I love it!
The bronzer is sooooo gorgeous! I did some poking around on MUA and basically found out that Guerlain is like the gold (bronze?) standard for bronzers, so I figured that if I was gonna splurge, I might as well do it right! 😉 Orient Sun is a fabulous shade for a natural-looking bronze flush on cool skin tones!
The bronzer and the mascara were my only purchases (other than a birthday present for my girl Paula) but I scored some fragrance samples (Hanae Mori, Chance eau Fraiche and a Juicy Couture Dirty English for the Hub), a lip sampler card from Guerlain, a couple of Chantecaille skin care packets and a Chanel Hydramax serum sample! Wheeee! 😀
Jennifer says
Yay! I made it on MakeupandBeautyBlog.com! haha. I’m glad you tried it and like it…now break out with Hollywood Nights with Style Minx on top and work it! LOL!
Kirsty says
Damnit! Now I kinda want trio 1! D’ya think it would work on a pasty Scottish brunette with hazel eyes?! I know olive greens work for me, and emerald greens, but I’ve never tried teal.
When I saw the purples in #2 I knew I HAD to have it, but mood ring is really pretty! Have you tried the pencils at all? The brown and the purple (lol) are really calling me!
Lilan says
Hi Karen!
I haven’t tried Trio 1 yet, although I want to soon! I also LOVE Danity Kane! I hope you have fun at your class.. their new song is so catchy it’s been stuck in my head for days now 🙂
Hope you had a good Monday!

Hi Karen,
Oh, I wouldn’t say it wasn’t too crazy at work – I am a teacher for mentally handicapped children and there is every day a little bit crazy 😉
This job isn’t easy all the time, but I really like it and know why I’ve chosen this job.
My job has nothing to do with makeup or beauty – that’s why I am glad I can enjoy my MAC “addiction” in my private time as something completely different from what I do in my job. 🙂
Tonya says
Soba is great. That’s a good idea about putting Pearl under it too, I’ll have to try that.
Yeah, if you ever make it to MN, I’ll give you some fun hot spots to visit. My boyfriend and I have been to a couple of good Cuban restaurants in Minneapolis lately.
I know, sometimes I wonder why I live here; I’m not a fan of winter. It makes for a messy commute. Hopefully that was the last of it. Luckly I’m heading to Florida next week for work and then to Phoenix at the end of April with the fam, so that should break up my cold weather blues.

Fab look Karen x
Karen says
Hi Cathy,
It’s very pretty and I hope it works for you! You’ll love the green… so pretty.
Are you a brights kinda girl when it comes to shadows?
Karen says
Hi SharShar,
SWEET! What kind of look did you do? Did you use the Trio only or did you bring other colors up in the mix?
What do you think of the rest of Heatherette?
Aww, and thanks girl! I am lovin’ this combo and I think I might actually wear it again tomorrow, LOL!
Karen says
Thanks Karen B.! It’s not a color I would naturally reach for but I think I’m going to start wearing it more often. Do you like teals? What colors are your faves?
Karen says
Hi Amanda,
Ohhh! I got em. I have a crush on Maggie, awww! She reminds me so much of my old boy, Bell. (*tears*) And thanks for checking out the “about” section! I sometimes wonder if people ever find it… I guess they do, WOOT!
Karen says
Hi PeeChee,
LOL! Girl, if I go out dancing I’m like, “I gotta leave by 12 otherwise I turn into a pumpkin.” Seriously. And I don’t go out on school nights any more, boo. I’m boring, but at least my dark circles aren’t as bad as they used to be when I was in my 20s and going out like every other night.
I was so surprised to find out how wearable these shades are!!! You can totally tone ’em down if you don’t want to look like you’re going to City Nights (LOLOLOL – EWWWWW!).
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
Hmmm. Now you’re tempting me! I haven’t worn colored mascara since the early 90s or late 80s, OY! But I think I’m ready now…
I sooo knew you were going to use some makeup math to get that bronzer. I am new to Guerlain but am so curious to try it now. I hope they have a bronzer shade that will actually show up on me (Nars Laguna doesn’t, boo).
I hope you like Chance eau Fraiche! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Jennifer!
LOL, did you see this post before you checked your email? J/k!!!
Thanks again for suggesting this combo! You were so right about that green! It’s beautiful. I will try it without the Pink Pearl and with Soba in the crease next time.
HA! Maybe someday I’ll bust out the Hollywood Nights, Style Minx and the scary lashes all at the same time!
Karen says
Hi Kirsty,
You know, the teal might work for you. I honestly believe people can wear most colors, it’s just a matter of finding what to pair it with, ya know? Try it, and ask your fave MAC artist to give you a few suggestions on how to make it work for you!
BTW, I love olive greens! What is your fave?
The pencils are okay if you like smudgy. While the darker sides are amazing colors, it does get all over the place. You have to take time to put it on (no slap it on and go, which I learned the hard way… yikes!) and be purposeful with your placement. I’d suggest passing, but hey, ya never know till you get the chance to play with ’em in person.
Karen says
Hi Lilan,
Yay, have fun with it! The teal is beautiful.
LOL, sadly this is the first DK song I’ve ever heard. What other hits should I look up?
Karen says
Hi Mariah!
I just use a shader brush with a small head (similar to MAC 252, but from sephora). Sometimes I use my dreaded/loved MAC 219 Pencil brush, too!
Karen says
Hi Susanne,
Oh, you are the second teacher I’ve met in two days! (I have a dance bud that teaches kindergarden). 🙂 Your job isn’t easy, I’m sure. But it’s amazing that you have such a direct impact on children’s lives, and how you can shape their world. I love teachers, BTW! I was quite a nerd in school and remember all the teachers that changed my life with fondness. So, kudos! How long have you been doing it for?
My day jobs in the past had nothing to do with makeup or beauty either, LOL…
Karen says
Hi Tonya,
Pearl makes everything look a bit more magical… love it with Woodwinked! It’s like buttah!
If I ever make it to your state now I know I have someone to give me the skinny, yay. I love Cuban food, BTW. “Gimme CARBS in all international cuisines” is my unfortunate mantra. Good thing I like to run…
Let me know if you ever need any SF/Marin county info. I always love getting folks out of Fisherman’s Warf (which is fun, but there’s so much more) when they visit the Bay.
I hope you get some fun time when you head to Florida next week. Soak up some sun and catch a wave or two for me!
Karen says
Thanks Jot! I hope you’re having a good day. 🙂
Glosslizard says
Hi Karen!
The beauty of the mascara is that it’s just green enough to have the green effects, but not so bright as to call forth visions of MTV neon lashes! 😉
The reviews of the Guerlain bronzers are very compelling, and my experience really bears it out! I’m so happy with my score! Since you have a warmer, darker complexion, you could even try out Guerlain’s poudre d’ orient bronzer, which is apparently an enormous pan and a terrific value for the bucks (it was too orange on me)!
I am looking forward to spritzing the eau Fraiche, it has such a citrusy freshness! And BTW, being sore just means you’re being virtuous, not old! 😀
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
Sweeeet. I like tasteful green, not MTV club green!
Poudre d’orient sounds FAB. You know I love getting my dolla’s worth (makeup math!).
Ha ha ha! I dunno girl… I remember the days when I’d go to dance class five nights in a row and I never got sore. Brings a tear to my eye! J/K I still have plenty years of booty shaking left in me (so I’d like to think).
