Wish I could say I wore this look to someplace fabulous this week, like an exclusive after-hours vampire club (assuming I didn’t get eaten, of course), but alas, no.
No vampire clubs, but I did wear it someplace fun — namely DSW, to look at boots. 🙂
SIDE NOTE: You know you’re a cat lady when you see a pair of boots with a tiny pocket on them, and the first things you think of putting in the pocket are cat treats.
I posted this smokey eye earlier today but neglected to list a breakdown, so hurr goes.
It features bronze smokey eyes with black cat eye liner, purple eyeshadow along the lower lash lines and a flash of blue on the lids. And the eyes are paired with a glossy plum/berry lip for extra drama-for-your-mama.
Since the eyes and lips pack some punch, I kept the cheeks mellow with a bit of contouring, a matte peachy pink blush and a sprinkling of peachy bronze highlighter.
Most of the products I used are from MAC’s fall Indulge collection, which has been available for a hot second. Some of them are sold out on MAC’s site, but you may be able to track them down at macys.com, bloomingdales.com or nordstrom.com.
Or maybe at your nearby MAC counter or MAC Pro store.
As for the breakdown…
Eyes
I love this eye look because it has a surprise. When you see it from straight on, it looks pretty basic, right? Like a basic bronze smokey eye with purple along the lower lash line. But then I close my eyes and SURPRISE! — a flash of blue and cat eye liner.
I love stuff like that. 🙂
- Primer: MAC Painterly Paint Pot as a base all over my lids
- Brow bone: MAC Shroom Eye Shadow, a shimmery beige from the permanent line
- Crease: MAC Soft Brown Eye Shadow, a warm brown from the permanent collection, which helps to anchor the entire smokey look
- Outer half of the lids and crease: MAC Divine Decadence Eye Shadow, a shimmery bronze from the Indulge collection, to add depth to the look
- Outer V: MAC Beluga Eye Shadow, a shimmery charcoal from Indulge. I used it to darken the corner and increase the contrast of the smokey gradient.
- Lid: MAC Sex & The Oyster Eye Shadow (also from Indulge), a shimmery bluish gray green for a flash of color on the lid
- Upper Lash Line: Diffused cat eye liner, created by lining my eyes first with MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack gel liner, and then patting MAC Deep Cravings Eye Shadow, a shimmery gray from Indulge, directly on top
- Water lines: Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Perversion, a matte black
- Lower lash lines: MAC Soft Brown blended with MAC Palace Pedigreed Eye Shadow, a dark plum from Indulge
- Inner corner: MAC Shroom again!
- Lashes: MAC Extended Play Lash in Gigablack mascara on upper and lower lashes
- Brows: MAC Veluxe Brow Liners in Deep Brunette and Deep Dark Brunette
Whew! That was a task, but the lips and cheeks were much easier. 🙂
Cheeks and Lips
- Lips: MAC Sweet Succulence Lipstick (a glossy plum) topped with Lust For Life Lipglass (a shimmery dark berry), both from the Indulge collection
- Cheeks: NARS Amour Blush, a matte peachy pink on the apples
- Contour: Make Up For Ever Bronzing Powder in 40 just beneath my cheekbones
- Highlight: Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in Opal, a shimmery, peachy bronze, applied on my upper cheekbones, down the bridge of my nose and on my cupid’s bow
All done.
It might be a bit much to wear to the Post Office or to go buy bananas at the corner store but —
Nah, forget that. You only live once. 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Those colors look fabulous on you! I like the look of the Indulge collection, and I think you just sold me on Sex & The Oyster.
Karen says
Hi Erin,
Thank you! I hope you get around to picking up that shade, it really is fab with smokey eyes.
Happy Friday!

Sunny says
Oh gurrrl, you’re HOT! Love the smokey eye, and who says you can’t pair a bolder lip with something smokey? 😉
Karen says
Hi Sunny,
Yes! Strong eyes + strong lips for the win!
Gowthami says
You look stunning!!
Karen says
Thank you!
Agata says
This looks is gorgeous on you Karen. I have been wearing a similar look using Sex&Oyster on the lid and Divine Decadence in the crease. I might have to add the black liner and the purple eyeshadow on the lower lid. Either way, you look beautiful!
Karen says
Hi Agata!
Definitely give the purple and the cat eye a go! It kicks it up a notch. Oh, and if you do purple along the lower lash line, you might also want to keep a transitional brown nearby. I find it really helps to diffuse the purple so that it has that lovely water color effect.
Hope you’re having a lovely Friday so far! What are your plans for the weekend? Tomorrow, I’m FINALLY going to get my hair colored, woo hoo!
Agata says
Thanks for the tip. I will use it next time I have a big night out 🙂
I don’t have any plans for the weekend. Just going out to dinner with a friend tonight and work of course. Have you decided what you’re going to do with your hair?
Karen says
Sure thing! It’s all about the transition colors, they are the unsung stars of the makeup world. Without them, things would be a hot mess, LOL!
Dinner with a friend sounds fun. What kind of food are you guys having?
So, the hair. I think for now I’m just going to stick with the same thing. I’m tempted to go darker, but once you do, you really have to commit, since it’s hard to go light again. I’m going to give it a couple months, and if I’m still itching for dark hair in the new year, then I’m going to take the plunge. I saw your new ‘do on instagram, by the way, and it looks fierce! Love it. 😀
Agata says
We ended up going to Olive Garden. Berry sangria- yum! And we also went to the casino. I am not a huge fan as you know but my hubby really wanted to go so I caved in. Unfortunately, no win for us…
Sometimes it is safer to stick to the same color and your color is fabulous but changes are good too! But I like your idea of waiting a few months.
I really like my new haircut, funny how just cutting your bangs can make a huge difference. And getting a fresh color too I guess! And thanks for your sweet compliment 🙂
Astrild says
OMG!!! It’s gorgeous!!! love, love, love this look.
Karen says
Thank you, Astrild. Hope you’re having a nice Friday so far! What are your weekend plans?

meredith says
I love this look.
Karen says
Hi Meredith,
Thanks. 🙂 Did you pick anything up from the collection?
meredith says
I didn’t but I’m starting to wish I had. The colors are so rich and tempting.
Karen says
MAC’s fall collections are notorious for their tempting treats. 🙂 Several of my favorite MAC collections of all time have been fall launches! Cult of Cherry, Fabulous Felines, Smoke Signals… It’s good stuff.
You still have time to pick stuff up. Maybe your nearby counter might have some bits and bobs left!
hanna says
This smokey eye looks amazing on you Karen.
Karen says
Thanks Hanna!
Amanda says
Stunning. Pretty please, tell us how to grow out our eyebrows 🙂
Karen says
Hi Amanda,
Honestly, the best advice I can give you is to leave them alone, and just prepare yourself for funky looking brows for a few months. I’ve been growing mine out since May, and they’re still not quite there yet.
Arianne says
WERK, Karen! Wow. I really REALLY love this look. Favourite. <3
Karen says
Thanks, Arianne. 🙂
Please give Scherbie my regards. I hope you two have a great weekend!

You look gorgeous! and I LOVE your necklace, where is it from??
Karen says
Thanks, Yolanda! I recently bought it at H&M. I think it was $13. 🙂
Rachel P says
YOLO for sure, life is too short not to parade around in great makeup! I am such a fan of the look! I love berry lipsticks, it’s tricky for me to find the right shade (too pinky and it brings out my blemishes), but berry lipglosses are even harder- my lips are naturally not very dark/pigmented on their own, so I usually get a weird streaky effect with darker translucent glosses.
But on YOU, they are PERFECT!!
Karen says
Hi Rachel!
Happy Friday. 🙂
When you wear darker berry glosses, you might want to try lining and then filling your lips in first with a coordinating lip pencil. I find it really helps to mellow out any streaky issues!
Kiss & Make-up says
Kaaaaarrren, you look gorgeous, girl! I bet that even with those cat lady boots on you’d still ooooooze glamour with this make-up on 🙂
Karen says
Haha, they should really market those boots as “Cat Lady Boots.” I bet they’d sell out quickly!
Happy Friday!
Ankita@corallista says
I love everything about this look! I have received Beluga as a sample and though I’ve not used it yet, it looks more olive toned to me than charcoal in the pan!
Karen says
That’s cool! I’m going to try layering it to see if I can get more of the green tones to come through. Happy Friday!
Joanna says
Loving this look on you.
Karen says
