1. Gosh, this is a comfy concealer!
MAC Studio Waterweight is MAC’s new lightweight medium-coverage matte finish liquid concealer (which you can build up to full). It has a thin, watery formula of the type that has become over the past few years, like Dior Nude Air and Shiseido Sync Synchro Skin, except with more coverage.
If you crave moderate coverage and a matte finish, and you don’t like your face to feel painted and “makeup-y,” check it out. You can set it with a powder or leave it alone.
Out the gate, Studio Waterweight provides more coverage than other MAC medium-coverage concealers like Select Cover-up and Select Moisturecover, but slightly less coverage than full-coverage Pro Longwear and Studio Finish. But you can build it up to full.
“MAC STUDIO WATERWEIGHT CONCEALER is an ultra-fluid formula with medium-full buildable coverage and a natural finish. While it hydrates and gently diffuses the appearance of imperfections, it also helps reduce the appearance of under eye circles, dark spots and discolouration.”
2. Not the best concealer for dry skin…
It looks fresh for a solid six hours on my combination skin and covers almost everything, from my dark circles to uneven pigmentation, without oxidizing, and it doesn’t pool up in my fine lines, buuut it does. Not. Cooperate. With. Dry. Skin.
Even if your skin is just the teeniest bit dry.
Wearing this, the dry parts of my combo skin, especially the areas under my eyes and around my mouth, look even drier than usual IMO, and the longer I wear Studio Waterweight, the worse those dry areas look. They become patchier, flakier and look more uneven. And layering a powder on top seems to intensify the effect.
3. Works well in concealer cocktails
I haven’t been reaching for this to wear on its own because of the dry skin issue; however, I like how it mixes with liquid foundation, tinted moisturizer, and even face moisturizers, which I’ve been doing to bump up the coverage and moisture. It does seem to be less drying when I’ve mixed it with something else, and it still adds enough coverage without feeling or looking heavy.
Ideal for normal and oily skin
Studio Waterweight is one of the lightest, MOST comfortable concealers in the MAC concealer fam, and it comes in a pretty wide 16 shade range. The color also stays true with little-to-no oxidation (always a good thing), and if you have oily or normal skin and want flexible coverage and a matte finish, it could work for you. That said, I’d proceed with caution if your skin is even a little bit dry…

Hi Karen,
I have been using this concealer, shade NW15, under-eye, to cover an “age spot” on my jaw line and around the nose. I apply over my SPF 50 mineral sunscreen (liquid) and a touch of Clinique’s Moisture Surge Supercharged Concentrate. I find that just that dab of Concentrate makes a huge difference, no caking at all and I finish with powder. I really like how a little goes a long way.

Hi Lauren,
The coverage on this concealer is great. I’ll try a touch of moisturizer underneath next time I give it a go!

What a bummer that it emphasizes all the dryness! My under eyes are complicated. The concealer will either be too dry or too oily for my under eyes. Let’s not talk about the rest of my face! You look beautiful whatsoever! x
Karen says
Hi Emmy,
Mine are too. What are you currently using for your under eyes?

Darn, with the dry skin!

I know. I swear my dry spots are plotting against me!

I have the driest of skin and haven’t had much of an issue; I LOVE this concealer. It floats on my skin and over my fine lines. I is 50 (ack) and need all the floating I can get. 😉 I apply eye cream in my skincare routine, but right before I put on my makeup, I ALWAYS apply eye cream. With a lot of concealers, I actually mix eye cream and concealer on the back of my hand, but with Studio Waterweight, I apply eye cream, then apply concealer. My current eye cream of choice right before makeup application is IT Cosmetics Confidence in an Eye Cream. It is HYDRATING and has that ever so slight pink pigment.

Hi Teri,
I’m glad you love this! I wish I did. It’s a beautiful concealer but just doesn’t play well with my dry spots.

I would not have understood what you meant without the side by side powder. All the time I thought your face looks fine, but side by side there is a noticeably difference! My skin is mostly oily, but especially around my mouth and under my eyes it can get dry, not sure if it would work for me.

Glad you found the pics helpful!

Thank you for this!! I’ve been curious about it, but I think I’ll stick with my Nars Radiant creamy concealer for now ?

yikes i wish i had read this before I ordered it last weekend but I searched the interwebz for reviews and while there were only few reviews, they were mostly positive. so crossing my fingers until I receive it and can try it for myself!
what i was mostly looking for were swatches as some of the reviews said this concealer ran light. I did order NC 30 after much deliberation tho! (I’m NC 42 in foundation).
i wish you had swatches in your review to help other guys/gals choose a color 🙂
