Good morning, friend! 🙂 It’s a rainy day here in Novato-ay. Seriously, summer is long gone now. There are piles of wet leaves outside, and the sky is dark grey.
How’s your weekend coming along? What are up to? I’m taking it nice and slow. The only thing I kind of rushed through is my makeup. I’m still on that 15-minute makeup kick, and this is my latest try. I was going for glossy, grungy glam.
I wish I had somewhere special to wear makeup today… Actually, no I don’t. I just want to stay inside where it’s warm and watch TV on the couch.
I did this whole look in 15 minutes, just to try something different than my usual neutral lids and neutral lips.
I used cool-toned MAC Tailor Grey Pro Longwear Paint Pot, a cream shadow, and just kind of smushed that all over my lids with a finger. Then I took a black liner and lined my lash and water lines with it, then smushed that too. And because I was gonna put an eye gloss on top of it anyway, I didn’t make it too neat.
It was actually really messy and looked very scary, but then I put the gloss on top, and it all melted together into glossy, grungy goodness.
Then I added layer upon layer of my favorite waterproof mascara, Urban Decay Cannonball Ultra Waterproof.
I think the most important thing to remember about eye gloss is that it isn’t meant to look perfect and precise, and you just have to embrace that; otherwise, all you see are the imperfections.
I guess that’s a weird life lesson, too…
Like, when I close my eyes and look down, you can see that my liner has transferred into the crease, but it’s purposefully messy. Plus, it only took 15 minutes. When you only have a short time for your makeup, you can’t expect to do everything perfectly.
What’s super cool about gloss is that you have so much room for error. It’s supposed to look messy, and sometimes that’s great.

On top of the world!
I feel like I just conquered the world because I finally figured out how to collapse Connor’s play yard, huzzah!
El Hub had been using brute gorilla force to force it in and out of doorways, which was scratching up the walls, but then I — wait for it — read the manual and figured out that it’s really east to collapse down, so now she’s about to hang out with me in my bedroom while I run a couple miles on the treadmill.
Being as Saturday is Caturday, what are you and your feline friends up to today? I wanna do some hardcore TV-watching and relaxing, which Tabs enthusiastically supports. Have a great day, my friend.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Love MAC Paint Pots as an all over lid color base for eye looks. I’ve never tried Urban Decay mascaras. If this one is truly waterproof, I will have to give it a try. Always looking for a good mascara that is less expensive than either of my two holy grails, which are Cle de Peau and Chanel.
We had a nice steady gentle rain for a good couple of hours yesterday. Gives me hope, since we had the tree company out yesterday to remove two trees that died during the drought. Sunny this morning. I have my fingers crossed that it rains some more this weekend.

I love that Chanel one, too, but it’s so $$$! The Urban Decay one is great but it’s always out of stock at Sephora so I get mine at Ulta. I hope you like it… It’s great at holding a curl.
Stay dry when you go out today! And have fun looking at makeup. You’ll have to give me your take on the Dior quints!
Tatiana says
The gray/smoky quint wasn’t me at all. I swatched the Precious Embroidery one and it just seemed so familiar. Like I already have something similar in my stash. The darkest color also looked a bit patchy on my skin. So I decided to hold off for a while. Maybe I’m just being picky. Dear Husband brought back two SUQQU quads from his recent trip to London, so I keep comparing everything to them. I have so much stuff, it’s getting hard to get excited about more.
Karen says
It’s not a bad thing to be picky. I’m getting that way about clothes and shoes… If I don’t absolutely and completely love it, there’s no way it’s getting into my closet.
I’ve been dying to try SUQQU brushes. I blame Lisa Eldridge!
Tatiana says
I know, kitten’s paws? Isn’t that what Lisa likened them to? They are nice. Even with the exchange rate in our favor they’re still pricey. I like some of the Wayne Goss brushes available at Beautylish.

Today is actually supposed to be nice (upper 60s and sunny) which is odd for fall in North Dakota so I plan to make the most of it by going on the Art and Wine Walk downtown. You’re makeup looks pretty! I am going to be a devil for Halloween, any makeup ideas/tips?
Karen says
Hi Rachel!
Thank you. 🙂 For your costume, how much time do you want to put into your makeup? If you’re going for easy, I’d do matte red lips and big false lashes. You’ll get a lot of bang for your buck without a ton of effort. If you want to do something more involved, then red smoky eyes (maybe with dramatic winged liner) would be fun. I’d also do some contouring because… Halloween!
Have fun at the Art and Wine Walk. Do you have a favorite type of wine? I’m a reisling kind of girl.
Rachel says
Thanks for the ideas. I was thinking red lips and lashes, probably the easiest! As far as wine I’m into red blends lately. Have fun chillin with Tabs and Connor Claire today!
Karen says
You’re welcome! Red lips and lashes are classic. If you’re not into mattes a glossy red would be pretty (but high maintenance).
I like reds wines but they have to be smooth and light and fruity. I don’t want to be challenged by my wine, LOL.
Enjoy the rest of your Caturday!

My weekend is about cleaning out the apartment, writing blog posts and baths. I have four bath bombs I bought from Lush. I hope to use two by Monday.

Love the eye gloss, Karen! So smudgy and grungy. The lip colour is beautiful too!
I’m down in London meeting my two-day-old niece, Allegra Rose, this weekend. She is super beautiful!

Karen, I love this look. I just got Tailor Gray yesterday (finally!) at the Nordstrom fall beauty trend event, and now I want the eye gloss. I take it that this eye gloss is less sticky/easier/more pleasant to use than MAC’s eye gloss? I wish Rouge Bunny Rouge was easier to sample/purchase. I checked their web site and discovered that there is a salon about 40 minutes away that carries some Rouge Bunny Rouge products, but it seems like it would be easier to try the brand by ordering from the web site! Returns are on unopened, unused products only, so I would have to be sure… of course I’m tempted by the Chronos eye shadow palette, too, as long as I’m ordering… do you have any thoughts?
Karen says
Hi Fran,
YAY! If you end up finding any good eyeshadow combos to go with Tailor Grey you’ll have to let me know. Anywho, the Eye Gloss is great. It’s not as heavy and sticky as MAC’s, which is the main reason why I love it, but it does move around so keep that in mind. I have Chronos and love it, especially on lids for smoky eyes, but I don’t reach for it as often as I should. RBR’s shadows are generally great quality. Super soft, easy to blend and long wearing.
If you have any other Qs about the Gloss or the palette please let me know!
Fran says
I felt adventurous and ordered the eye gloss — not sure if I’ll like the messy/grungy look, but it’s worth a try, especially if the gloss is comfortable to wear!
While I was at the website, I noticed that, if I had the eye gloss + the palette in my cart, it was giving me a $15 discount… but I decided that the palette runs a bit dark for me. So I took it out of the cart and started adding individual eyeshadows instead. Once I had five eyeshadows + the gloss in the cart, it was giving me $50 off a $150 order! Seriously! The eye gloss + 5 Rouge Bunny Rouge eyeshadows for $102! So, even though I’ve never tried the eyeshadow before, I went for it, since people rave about them so much. I ordered Rain Dove (‘Lightest taupe with rosy gold highlights’), Mysterious Tinamou (‘Iridescent, bejewelled deep-sea blue’), Trumpeter Koel (‘Dark lead-grey with lilac-blue iridescence’), Vivacious Maguari (‘Highly polished pure sterling silver’), and Whispering Ibis (aLovely, rich iridescent fern-green, shimmering with gold pearls’). Hoping that the blue and the green don’t lean too teal for me… I think the other colors should be safe. I just love blue eyeshadows, if they’re true blue or lean purple, and green ones, if they’re true green or lean a little bit to the yellow side, so I decided to take a chance after looking at what swatches I could find on the web. People rave about the formula so much that I felt like it was worth trying. I’m getting samples of the loose glitter to try, too… pretty excited, anticipating this package!

Hi Karen
Hope is all good on your end.
how do you stop this from happening, my eye lid is sagging and the eyeliner always ends up exactly in that place
Karen says
Hi Bebe,
Ahh! So, what kind of liner are you using? If you’re using a pencil liner (they tend to move around a lot on the skin) you may have to switch to something more long-wearing like a gel or a liquid. When gels and liquids dry they set completely, which means less transfer. Each one has advantages and disadvantages. Gels are easier to apply, I think, because they’re thicker, and so you have more control over them, but you have to use a separate eye liner brush to apply. Liquids are easier to tote around because they come in a pen, but because they’re thinner than gels, they’re at first a little harder to get used to. In either case, after you apply your liner, you’ll want to look down for a minute or two to wait for it to completely dry so that it doesn’t transfer into the crease while it’s wet.
Does this all make sense? Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi – I love the lip colour. I’m surprised that you used Hex as a lipliner, it seems like a deep red colour on the website, whereas your pictures seem more like medium mauve?
