Ironically, my favorite lipstick (this week) is a modern twist on a traditional idea. It’s called Vintage, and I think of it as a modern twist on a traditional nude lipstick for fall.
I’m kind of loving that idea, the idea of lips that are slightly richer, and maybe a few shades darker, than your natural lip color.
Tom Ford’s fabulous new rich, rosy brown Lip Color in Negligee has some of that same vibe.
The whole idea is just so different from what I picture in my head when I think “nude lips,” which over the past few years have meant a lot of light peach, pink and beige.
Barbie lips, so to speak.
I was digging around in my lipstick collection last weekend for something modern and nude when I re-discovered this old friend’s charms — Vintage ($30), a shade in the Hourglass Femme Rouge lipstick line, and one of my unsung makeup heroes.
I first fell in love with Vintage years ago, and I periodically fall back in love with it again. And again. It’s one of those shades that when you put it on your lips after being away from it for a while, you’re kind of like, “Huh. Why did I stop wearing this? It’s so fantastic!”
Isn’t it beautiful? That deep rosy color and that sheen? Talk about being perfect for darker nude lip looks.
Unlike Tom Ford’s Negligee (Ha! I made myself laugh.), it’s less brown and more rose, so the overall effect is slightly softer and friendlier. I think Negligee is a little edgier.
The long-running Unsung Heroes series features some of my favorite permanent collection products from a variety of bodacious beauty brands.
Another thing I love about Vintage is the way it applies. It’s almost like I’m buttering an English muffin…
You know how English muffins have those nooks and crannies that get all filled up with jam or butter (mmm…butter)? Well, Vintage does something like that when I apply it on my still flaky lips…which I won’t go into again here because even I’m getting tired of hearing about it, LOL!
Through the magic of makeup science, Vintage irons out those dry, ragged patches, transforming them into velvety, seamless skin. I think it even makes my lips look a little plumper.
Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking.
Whatever, it works for me. 🙂
And then there’s the way Vintage fades… Over the course of 4-5 hours, it dissipates slowly and evenly, without leaving behind one of those funky white lines on my bottom lip or settling into my vertical lip lines. It just peaces out, elegantly, like a prima ballerina exiting stage left.
Ah, Vintage… So glad we re-found each other!
If you’d like to experience its charms, Vintage ($30) is available now at Hourglass counters, Sephora stores and online.
And if you find that you love it enough to use every last drop (magic 8 ball says, “Signs point to yes”), save that tube, and grab a Lipstick Refill bullet for $24.

Karen

This color is very mlbb! I have one fro mufe rouge artist natural #15 which is just the most flattering rosy nude I’ve had! it’s EXACTLY my lips and stunning!

Aaaah, this is fantastic!
I love a darker nude (you won’t catch me dead in peach anything unless it has cake in the description) and this is very similar to TF Negligee – I was attempting and failing to find a dupe for it because even for a lipstick junkie like me… $50 for a lipstick is a bit much…
Thank you!
And sorry for the ramble. I’m excited, very excited…!!

I read your blog for the makeup 411. But your writing style is EPIC! So, so entertaining. I swear you could write about a flat tire on an old hoopty & make it entertaining reading.
In lipstick news, that color looks great on you. I’m still tryna find my HG nude. The search continues…

I was looking for a review of Vintage just a couple weeks ago, and there were surprisingly few! So yours comes just in time. 🙂 It’s a beautiful color for fall, but I see now that I have a near-dupe in Maybelline Crazy for Coffee, which I reach for when I’m feeling that ’90s my-lips-but-darker vibe. I agree that it’s more flattering than “Barbie lips,” even for pale ladies like myself.

This is the perfect mlbb shade for you! It doesn’t even look like you’re wearing anything. Very soft and natural. I like it!

Hi Karen, I must go get this! So pretty but chilled. What else are you wearing? Your skin is perfection (again) Is this the new Laura Mercier foundation?
Karen says
Hi Amanda,
Yup, it sure is! I have it layered on top of MAC Prep + Prime Natural Radiance. No powder, just the primer and foundation. 🙂
I hope you give that new Laura foundation a try. It is AMAZING!

I was just going to ask what you were wearing, your skin looks amazing!!

What a gorgeous rosy neutral! Love these kind of shades! And really like your cat print shirt Karen 🙂

This is a beautiful nude on you. I tried it against my NW20 skin with pink undertones, and it pulled mostly brown on me. Wasn’t meant to be…

Love this on you! I haven’t let myself near the Hourglass section of Sephora lately because I will BUY ALL THE THINGS. I loved their matte foundation, it just wasn’t light enough for my NW15 skin. I’ll have to check out the lipsticks though, if they have that kind of finish and wear time. Lately I’ve been using Revlon’s Colorburst Balm Stain in Honey, which is a total misnomer because it goes very nude-pink (at least on me!). Great formula for the price, isn’t too dry and lasts well.
