Lancôme’s new Monsieur Big collection, which includes a mascara and a separate liner, is so obviously a shout-out to Sex and the City’s colossal character, but ya know, I’m Team Aiden for Life, because when a man volunteers to buff your hardwood floors…that’s true love right there.
The Monsieur Big collection is new to Lancôme
The collection includes a $25 black mascara, a $25 black liquid liner and a new line of five chubby $25 brow crayons (haven’t tried those, though), all of which are available on Lancôme counters and the Lancôme website now. I’m pretty sure they’re all LE.
Layers upon layers
Monsieur Big Mascara is all about length, definition and texture, but you need A LOT of layers to get there.
I call these rock ‘n’ roll lashes because if you look closely at them after piling on a few layers, the lashes look bumpy, and the more layers you apply, the bumpier they get.
It’s a casually dramatic lash look fit for musicians and actresses (or you and me!), because you can see the lashes from really far away. And the long-lasting, sweat-proof formula won’t go anywhere, not even under hot stage lights.
To get to that point on its own, though, takes me about four layers.
So, I think of this as a real-deal layering mascara that works best when you combine it with other mascaras in your arsenal, and I like using it with a base of MAC Extra Dimension Waterproof, which thickens the roots and locks down the lash curl (two things that Monsieur Big needs a little help with), upon which I add a couple coats of Monsieur Big.
Lancôme Monsieur Big Marker liner for thin, rich, shiny black lines
I like Lancôme Monsieur Big Marker liner for a very specific look — skinny, intensely black shiny lines on my upper lids (goes really well with with mattes and satin shadows). The stiff felt applicator has a slanted tip that tapers to a very fine point, and I’m diggin’ that fine point. It draws thin, precise lines, and, when you have limited lid real estate like I do, this is SO. KEY.
It dries in less than 30 seconds, too, so you aren’t stuck waiting with your eyes closed for days for your liner to dry, and the smudge-proof, water-proof formula lasts for what feels like YEARS.
But drawing flicks at the outer corners with the stiff applicator is hit or miss for me. Sometimes, it goes well, but other times it’s a hot-freakin’ mess, and I’m sitting there correcting wings with a weird angle while thinking, “Well, that was a bad idea! I should’ve left well enough alone.”
You know how it is. Those flicks can make or break it, man.
I prefer flexible liquid liner tips like the ones from Tom Ford and Clinique, but if you can flick with a stiff tip, more power to ya. You’ll probably like this. Maybe even love it.
I just realized that..
SATC debuted in 1998, which means that the show will be 20 years old next year, AND THAT IS SO CRAZY TO ME!!! I still remember hearing about it for the first time from a co-worker and having no inkling of what she was talking about.
I still get emo when I watch the last scene from the final season… In many ways, I wish they would’ve just ended it there instead of making the movies. It’s still one of my favorite shows, though.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Aaah, how funny! Been wanting to stop by the counter and try this recently. Just yesterday actually! But it was nearly closing time so I had to skip…

Hi Lex,
If you try out the brow crayon let me know if it’s any good!
Lex says
Hey Karen! Will do! Already wanting to go back and check out some more stuff. 🙂

Oh, my. That’s a lot of layering! On a related note, it looks like your lashes are growing in well. Thank goodness – I can still feel your distress about losing that clump.

I’ve been using Lash Food for about a month now! It feels like it’s taking forever though. 🙂
Kim says
I’m sure you notice it more (without makeup and with the magnifying mirror – HAHA!) but they look really good in your pics. Yay for the lash food!!

Flexible liquid liner tips for life! I actually like the normal Artliner from Lancôme, but this is not for me I think (especially since I normally wear brown liner and mascara.
Karen says
Those flex tips just make makeup life so much easier! Are you still using the Clinique pen?
Chelsea says
Yes! It’s my favorite.

I got a travel size of Monsieur Big Mascara from Ulta for my birthday in April, and I was surprised at how much I liked it. Your lashes look so long! I do wish the wand didn’t have a flat top because it seems to make it harder for me to get my little inner lashes, but it isn’t a really big problem. I love how the Marker looks on you.

I’ve tried the mascara and although I like it a lot, I found that the 12x Volume promised by the brand was non existent on me. It took 3-4 layers for that wow effect whilst with Dior Pump and Volume I get false lash effect with two coats! Still, maybe this buildability is a good thing for those who have thinner lashes? No idea. Love the liner on you! Haven’t checked this one out yet!

Aiden was way too nice, the nice guys never get the girl! At least not on TV.

I’m not sure I have the patience for 5 layers of mascara. Two seems to be the limit these days.
Give me a soft, brush tip, liner any day. But since I don’t do flicks (seriously hooded eyes here), just give me Chanel Stylo Yeux.
I liked the first SaTC movie, but not the later ones. I’m not sure I even liked the way the TV series ended. John? Really? Such a bland name, for a guy who caused her a lot of pain.
Karen says
I liked the first SaTC movie too. There’s rumors of a third movie! I hope it never happens because the second one was SO PAINFUL.
P.S. Stylo Yeux 88 Noir Intense is everything.
Tatiana says
I never bothered to see the second one.
Totally agree about SY88NI!!! I love so many of the SY colors.

I feel like Maybelline makes something similar or better than this. I don’t want to work hard with something that costs so much.
Karen says
If your lashes are thicker than mine you might need less coats.

I like this mascara, but it’s not something revolutionary for me, my 4€ Essence mascara does the exact same thing!

Glad you were able to try it out!
Miki says
Right?! I’m just so shocked at the Essence mascaras. Frik. So darn good! I can’t even go back to paying the high price tag now.
Trude says
There’s no way I would have the patience for 5 layers! But I could see it for stage like you mentioned. I’m loving L’Oreal’s Lash Paradise as a dupe for Better Than Sex right now, although I find it a *tad* clumpier it’s great for everyday.
P.S. You look so amazing in that leader photo, girl! <3
Erin says
The liner sounds like it might be a home run! I’ll have to swatch it next time I’m in Nordies.
