Hi everyone!
Now, as someone who has a weakness for color, eyeshadows are very dangerous territory for me.
I’m a total neutral lover and, as of quite recently, a color lover too…unfortunately for my wallet. I usually try to buy my eyeshadows in palettes or sets (like the Make Up For Ever shadows) to save money, but every now and then, there are some singles that I can’t be alive without.
(Ummm…this would include eyeshadows like Rose Gold by Ardency Inn and Pretentious by Makeup Geek.)
And one of my FAVORITES of those is Kat Von D Metal Crush Eyeshadow in Thunderstruck ($21).
I first found out about it on Kat Von D’s Instagram a couple months ago, because it was the #1 selling item (or maybe it was the #1 eyeshadow?) at Sephora. I honestly didn’t really need any more convincing at that point, but after some research, I saw that people were using it as a highlighter, too, and then I REALLY didn’t need to be convinced anymore.
What’s funny is that when Kat Von D first launched the Metal Crush eyeshadows, I wasn’t really into any of the shades…especially Thunderstruck! It looked like a super reg champagne, honestly. So thank god for social media and the Internet, because I was quickly schooled and went straight to my Sephora to grab it…except that it wasn’t that easy at all. It was sold out at every Georgia store for a while, and I had to keep checking back for a week to get it.
But it was really worth all the effort. I don’t have anything else like it in my collection, and the formula is so great that I’m not expecting to bump into a dupe anytime either.
So…the eyeshadow looks straight-up white in the pan, but it lights up with a lot of warm pinks and golden champagnes mixed in there on the skin and in swatches. It’s the most incredible thing in the inner corners, and it looks bright and beautiful popped on the center of the lids, too. I don’t even use other eyeshadows with it a lot of the time. And when I use it on my face, it blends out awesomely (I’m going to assume that’s a word), because the formula is super light, so you can pick up a small amount, depending on which brush you use. I mean, heads up, though — it’s one of the more intense highlights out there, but it absolutely works.
Anyways, I really love this eyeshadow formula, and I have my eye on the purple one next (don’t tell my Natasha Denona palette).

I agree, it looks more special and interesting in the swatch. Pretty.

It definitely makes for a glowing swatch. I wouldn’t have guessed from the pan, either. Once again, social media comes to the rescue!

I’ve been lusting over this one since it came out and I saw YouTube gurus using it as a face highlighter. Every time I go to buy it, it’s sold out. I hope I’ll get lucky one of these days.

I think nudes are so underrated, most of them look so lovely in swatches. The finish is really pretty.

I have Raw Power and use it as a blush more than I use it as a shadow. Love these. Thunderstruck is on my list too!

I love kat von d eyeshadow and thunderstruck especially, I just wish it was makeup geek prices! I also use it for a highlight and it’s lovely.

Looks a lot like mac nylon. Nylon is more beigey, thunderstruck more pinky, but both have the same sheen and highlighting power. In some light they look almost identical. Great inner-corner, browbone, etc highlighters!

I’ll have to check that one out. Thanks Amy!

Ahh! I’ve been trying to get my hands on this forever. It’s always sold out everywhere

I found mine at a Sephora inside JCPenney! My local Sephoras don’t even have Thunderstruck out as a tester.

I love your drawings – wish I had the ability to do that, but alas, stick figures are the only things I’m capable of lol. 🙂
Back on topic, that’s really a gorgeous eyeshadow! Just checked, and Kat’s website currently has it in stock.
Anna Oh says
Thank you Mitzi for both the kind words and the availability update 🙂

I had an eyeshadow like this for years and it was my favourite thing!
I can’t remember what brand it was though, and when it ran out a couple of years ago I wasn’t able to find a replacement.
I will have to check this one out!

Let me know how you like it K!

Hi,
How close is this shadow to MAC Vanilla pigment?
