This is probably not a big surprise, but I was kind of a weird kid. Case in point: when I was eight, I had a mummy obsession. It was just a phase, but it lasted for months. Day after day I would come home from the library with armfuls of books about mummies, and I’d spend hours reading about burial preparations (removal of the brain with a hook through the nose was my favorite part), pyramid building and Egyptology. My mom would look at me strangely as I’d describe the books and pets I’d bring with me into the afterlife.
My childhood mummy phase eventually passed, but the other day, while watching Nova, The Mummy Who Would Be King, my mind wandered to — surprise, surprise — makeup.
Is there a cap on how much makeup one can bring with them into the afterlife? — ’cause Cleopatra must’ve taken a TON of black eyeliner with her!
As I pondered my ginormous eyeshadow collection, I wondered which crease colors I would want to be buried with in my (presumably fabulously decorated) tomb for all eternity. I’d hire only the best tomb-keepers, too, and they would hook me up with giant custom-made eyeshadow pans of MAC Soft Brown, Soba and Sable eyeshadow, my top three go-to crease colors of all time! If we’re talking eternal resting places, we really ought to be prepared.
Which crease colors would you bring if you could actually “take makeup with you”?
YOU MUST CHOOSE!
Happy Sunday, ya’ll! How’s your weekend been? Yesterday, I chilled at home and then went to the movies to see Forgetting Sarah Marshall. It was filmed at Oahu’s Turtle Bay hotel, which is also where El Hub and I got married. I recognized several of the scenes and could even pick out spots and trees that are in my wedding pictures. It’s the closest I’ve been to Hawaii in a while.
Find any cool stuff at the makeup counter this weekend?

I’m riding with soft brown but I don’t have sable and I think I need him to join me in my eternity. I need the gangsta cat too…..perhaps we can work out a timeshare arrangement.
Anna says
Mine is Soba hands down………..or broze………. Sable looks bootiful though !
I’m lovin Hawaii, hope to go O’ahu in summer ! Cant wait to get my grass skirt on.
I thought you meant you had an early obssession about being a mother ! eheh 🙂

SOBA all the wayyyy!
Laura says
Hi Karen,
Soba is definitely my choice. i reach it almost everyday for that natural but polished look. It also makes my brown eyes look ligher. I don’t have soft brown nor sable but I want to try them though =)

You come up with the wittiest posts! I love soba and sable.

Tabs looked a bit worried in that picture. Argh, this is hard! Of all the colors which one would I choose? My mind said “Parrot”, unbelievable!
Tekoa says
Hmm… of those three, Sable.
In my weekend makeup news, I finally broke down and got a full sized bottle of Moon Sparkle by Escada. I figured after four times of returning to Sephora just to use the tester bottle that I liked it enough to buy it…
Joanna says
I had an odd obsession with mummies when I was in 6th grade. Somewhere deep down I still have an obsession, considering I never miss those Discovery Channel episodes =X.
Ahh, memories.
Three colors I would talk with me? Rose Blanc, Black Tied and Vex. Nothing like a mean smokey eye to spice up the afterlife.
Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net says
I only have Soft Brown so I’d have to say that amongst your choices. But I would definitely like to line up Clue in the mix because I love using that in my crease!
Ooh, but ask about outer-V afterlife partners and we’re in a whole other ballgame: Signed, Sealed (my absolute MUST HAVE), Carbon, Nocturnelle…

Y’know, I’ve been oddly prejudiced against neutrals and browns until recently, and I’m still looking for the perfect crease shade!
No doubt about it, I gotta go check out Soba!
TUPRNUT says
My pick is Soba. A very wise and beautiful blogging buddy of mine recommended this some time ago and now it’s all I need or want!
Lilan says
I don’t own any of these colors – but if I were you, I’d take Soba – it looks incredible against your skin tone!
The Boyfriend and I just came back from watching Forgetting Sarah Marshall today too! It was a cute film and the sights were really gorgeous – what a beautiful wedding you must’ve had 🙂 I still have yet to go to Hawaii, maybe someday…

For myself, I don’t have any of those colors but I would take Bare Escentuals “Well Rested” with me!! I’m figuring I might look a little tired for the rest of eternity. 😛

OMG!! Crazy coincidence: I am writing a paper on Ancient Egyptian Cosmetics this week for my History of Material Cultures class!!! XD How crazy is that?? There’s actually a lot of cool stuff about the subject!! They actually had foundation, eyeshadow, liner, nail polish and lipgloss! LOL! How awesome!!
Karen says
Hi Chamayne,
Tabz is so OG gangsta…I’m sure we can work it out so he can come and hang with you! Maybe he’ll bring his grill and his gold chains, too (because that’s how he rolls).
Karen says
Hi Anna,
I hope you make it to Oahu, too! Lemme know if you go cause I can give you a few fun things to do and yummy places to eat. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Christine,
Yeah girl! Do you love Soba too? What do you pair it with?
Karen says
Hi Laura,
What do you pair Soba with? I usually do a Soba/Rice Paper combo for neutral looks!
Karen says
Hi BeautyTalk,
Aww, thanks hon! Who knew my weird childhood obsession would ever come in handy in the beauty blogosphere, LOL. Hope you had a great weekend!
Karen says
Hi Dao,
Parrot is a FAB choice. I probably should reach for it more!
Hmm, now that I think about Tabs does look fairly concerned in that pic, ha ha ha.
Karen says
Hi Tekoa,
Moon Sparkle! I tried that a few weeks ago and it smelled super fruity on me! What notes do you get when you wear it? I really loved it on paper but for some reason it just didn’t work with my chemistry but I really wanted it to (sigh).
Karen says
Hi Joanna,
Maybe mummies are a phase that a select few girls go through; instead of horses, unicorns or Care Bears, we go all crazy for timelessly preserved bodies wrapped in resin and bandages.
Karen says
Hey Lynne,
Clue is a great one. I haven’t busted that out in awhile, so I must revisit with it soon. 🙂
Hope you had a wonderful weekend!
Karen says
Hi Nikki,
Soba, woot! Are you a fan of this color like me? What do you wear it with?
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
Hey girl! I think Soba would look great in your crease. You could probably wear it with Lemon Sugar. I’d then do a nice crisp black line on the top along w/a black tightline, and then smudge Technakohl in Graphblack on the bottom. Ohhh! Hot enough for the afterworld and then some.
Karen says
Hi Tuprnut,
Hee hee! 🙂 I’ll have the tomb keepers hook you up with some Soba pans girlfriend, for sure!
Hope you had a good weekend, and that your ice cream/movie fest was fun!
Karen says
Hi Lilan,
What did you think of the lead actor? I liked pretty much everything about the movie except for him. Honestly, I wish somebody would’ve warned me beforehand about all the shots of homeboy’s man meat. I so was NOT prepared for that and almost choked on my popcorn.
Karen says
Hi Bridget,
GOOD CALL! You gotta think about these things, seeing how it’s forever and all! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Mariah,
OOOH!!! Spooky! And here is yet another reason why I’m obsessed with ancient Egyptians: they had all of their makeup bases covered. I wonder if they had “prestige” and “drugstore” makeup, hmmm? 🙂
tania says
Hey Karen! Of your choices I would love sable for the crease (love a metallic or glitter on the crease) I totally need to scope that out! My fave colors ever are blacktied, howzat, and claire de lune.Love the fact that Tabz is bouncin’ to “Crossroads” by Bone Thugs in Harmony in that pic! He’s got it poppin’!
Pia says
I spent the weekend on house arrest. Must not buy any more makeup. But in my fantasy, I’m buying sable, ricepaper and humid. Those are the things I’m bringing to my afterlife journey. Sadly, none of them I have now. Me think me should write them down on my list for the afterlife. Here’s to hopping my forgetful hubby remember to buy them all!

Hmmm I really want to try Soba now…
Let’s see, my go-to (i.e. lazy) crease color is the brown shade in Clinique’s Strawberry Fudge duo. Really easy to wear and blend. I use MAC Romp for slightly more dramatic looks, and I’ve actually been using Star Violet a lot recently for a crease/outer corner color. I’m not usually too experimental with colors but it actually looks pretty subtle.
Ivy says
I’d prefer soba. Definetely.
anna says
Haux.

Trax and Carbon would have to go with me. Sable looks beautiful, might have to buy that one soon!
You were obsessed with mummies… I was obsessed with the Titanic at the same age. Must be a ‘morbid’ phase us girls go through.
Glosslizard says
Oooh, inspiring! I’m so gonna go check out Soba and then try that look! Hmmm, now which lippie to go with? 😉
Lilan says
Oh my goodness! All the full frontal shots were just TOO much for me! I had to look away, you should have seen my boyfriend, he just kept laughing at me 🙂
Other than that, the movie was cute and I actually didn’t mind the lead guy. I’m kinda into those dorky types, although if my man wanted to write a dracula musical, I might be speechless..
Hope you’re having a good Monday!
Karen says
Hi Tania!
So I’ve never tried Claire de Lune! I am all over that the next time I visit the MAC counter.
You will *love* Sable even more in person. It has a wonderful shimmer! I love it on the lid, too, for a subtle smokey eye.
LOL, Tabz is an old school hip hop kind of cat! That’s how he rolls…
Hope you are having a wonderful Monday.
Karen says
Hi Pia,
Girl… you better get that Sable ASAP once you are no longer on makeup lock down! It would look really pretty on your skin tone!
Karen says
Hi JK,
I like subtle colors, too. I don’t have Star Violet in my stash so I will need to check that one out. What do you wear it with?
Karen says
Hi Ivy,
Good choice! I am actually wearing it today. 🙂 Happy Monday!
Karen says
Hi Anna,
Is that a MAC shade?
Karen says
Hi Tanya,
It’s really wearable and so versatile! If you don’t have it I hope you check it out soon…I always push this color because I think it’s one of those MAC must haves!
Karen says
Hi Kelly,
Ahhhh! TRAX! I so have a love/hate relationship with Trax! I think I might be doing something wrong because I just can’t get it to work. What do you pair it with?
Funny, I went through a Titanic phase when I was in junior high. All it took was one PBS special…
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
OH! Something that’s barely-there but definitely there… your favorite nude or pink, perhaps? It will depend on the cheeks!
Hey, it’s kinda fun to conjure up makeup looks! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Lilan,
You’ve got great taste (I totally love dorky/nerdy types too.) 🙂 Yah, the man meat was WAY TOO MUCH for me. I was not ready for that jelly.
I kinda thought the Dracula puppet musical was AWESOME, but probably because I can totally see El Hub doing something like that if he was musically inclined.
How’s your Monday been? It’s COLD up here!
Lilan says
Don’t get me wrong, the Dracula song was totally FAB! I just think it would have caught me off guard and freak me out a little bit 😉
My Monday is ‘eh’.. it’s cold down here too. Although I’m excited to maybe see my mom for dinner tonight. She randomly came down from Lake Tahoe today to do some shopping and doesn’t know if she’s going to head back this afternoon or if she has time to stay for dinner. I hope she can stay – I haven’t seen her in over a month!
Stay warm up there, girl! I hear it might start raining soon 🙁

Hi Karen! what crease brush do you use??
Karen says
Hi Lilan,
Oh, I hope she stays so you can get in some good mom time with her! Tell her your nails look bad and that you need her! 😉
anna says
Yes Haux is a MAC shade, try it out, it is described as soft muted rosy brown, that and Corduroy are my favorites.
annas last blog post..BRING IT BACK!!
Karen says
Hi Jenny,
Honestly, I use whatever brush is clean! I rotate between a few brushes I got from a Sephora Smokey eye brush kit a few months ago, the MAC 217, and Billy B. Paintbrush #6.
Karen says
Hi Anna,
Both sound really pretty. I love the versatility of browns so I’m on it!
Glosslizard says
I love conjuring up makeup looks! It’s like a puzzle… green smokey eyes and dusty cheeks… what lippie? Hot pink lips and contoured cheeks… what eyes? So fun!
Lilan says
Boo, my mom wanted to leave the city early before I got off work so that she could hit up the outlets and shop on her way back to Tahoe. I AM my mother’s daughter! LOL

Yes they are pretty, but i got it, you like browns with golden base so that’s why maybe you haven’t noticed them.
Kirsty says
I now need sable in my life. I bet it looks awesome with club!
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
Here’s one: hot pink matte lips (oh!)! I would do pale cheeks, and pearl on the lid, with fatty black eyeliner on the top (Fluidline, of course) and big, flashy false lashes! 🙂
How about you?
Karen says
Hi Lilian,
That’s too bad you couldn’t have dinner with her, but at the same time, I gotta give your moms props for her shopping stamina! I bet when you two get together it’s like a shopping force to be reckoned with!
Karen says
Hi Anna,
I’m always trying to get myself out of my makeup comfort box so I will def. look those up…I hope they don’t show up too red on me.
Happy Tuesday!
Karen says
Hi Kirsty,
Ya know, I’ve tried Club with so many things and that’s a combo I’ve yet to try!!! WOOT! Time for some eyeshadow experimentation! 😉
Kelly says
The ones I pair most often with Trax are woodwinked or jete’ on the lid. That’s my neutral standby.
Karen says
Hi Kelly,
I have Woodwinked… in fact, it’s sitting right here in front of my keyboard. I will have to dig into my stash to find Trax and try this combo. I banished her to the drawer of things that “never get used” a while back. Hopefully this combo will rescue her from the depths!
Glosslizard says
Hmm, I think contoured cheeks with a nude blush, and a silvery-gray shadow smudging out just a little! Black mascara and well-defined brows! How ’bout a fedora to go with? 🙂
Karen says
CUTE! You know I love accessories!
I haven’t worn silvery gray in awhile, hmm…. maybe I’ll do that look tomorrow! Gotta take a break from the gold and khaki before I wear it out.
Glosslizard says
I’d like to see that, especially if you rock the fedora too! You always look so great in hats!
Karen says
I need some new ones, to tell you the truth! I’ve always had a hat fetish and would have more around if I had more closet space (ahhh, the eternal thorn in my side!).
Oh lawd, I used to wear a purple fedora in middle school and high school… I wonder what happened to that thing!
Are you a hat person? For some reason I see you as being a shoes kinda girl.
Chrsitna says
Satin Taupe, easy.

Eyeshadows I have and love and would SO take with me to the afterlife: Sable, Reflects Antique Gold glitter on top of Brun, Shroom. <– Awesome bronze smokey eye components! Honorable mentions that I also use for my bronze smokey eyes: Chocolate and Soft Black from The Body Shop’s eyeshadow lineup. Eyeshadows I NEEED: Humid, Nocturnelle, Goldmine/Woodwinked (depending on which gold shows up less orange on me), Deep Truth. Honorable mentions: Naval Stain, Tealo, and Bountiful Brown Powerpoint Pencils. They’re not shadows, but with colored eye pencils, I like to draw a thick line on my lid and blend them onto my lids.
