Absolutely, makeup matters. It definitely matters to me for many reasons.
First, it has the ability to completely transform how I feel. When I’m having a bad day, something as insignificant as filing in my brows, curling my lashes and applying a little gloss can totally change my outlook and turn things around. Those few easy things can get me out of my own head and focussed on having a good day.
Of course, I know that in the grand scheme of things, eyeliner isn’t as paramount as, say, stopping global warming, but that doesn’t make me love it any less. Through makeup, we’re able to express ourselves creatively and try new things — like by putting your own personal stamp on the world with a signature cat eye or lip look — which are very important, especially for adults, as we sometimes get bogged down by pressure and responsibilities.
I also love its accessibility. Tom Ford isn’t the only brand out there. There are great drugstore brands, too.
Men (yes, men!), women, teens, seniors — people of all backgrounds and ages. There aren’t very many things in this world like that.
It’s not like I can wake up one morning and suddenly decide to join a polo team. I mean, I wouldn’t even know how to do that, LOL! I’ve never even ridden a horse.
But, on the other hand, if I want to wear a dark purple gloss, I can run downtown to Rite Aid and pick one up. It’s a lot easier than finding a horse. 🙂
Makeup also brings people together. It’s very bonding.
I vividly remember getting ready for Jen’s wedding with my friends, and more recently, last Sunday, when I sat down at the kitchen table at home with my mom to give her a quick eye makeup lesson.
Without makeup, you and I would probably have never even met (that’s crazy talk!).
Something like that definitely has meaning. It absolutely matters.
What do you think, friend? Why do you think makeup matters?

Karen

I definitely feel you on the feeling better part. I don’t do colorful, creative looks but putting on some eyebrows, mascara, and lipstick makes me feel instantly better and that I can take on the world (Like yesterday when I had a final paper to turn in but had to go out right after). Following blogs like yours make me want to stay incorporating blue in my looks xD

Make up helps me feel better about how I look without make up, which I know sounds weird. Make up is about enhancing what is already there, so it forces me to look for the good. I feel better about a bare face because of make up! 🙂

Agree with you on all counts. Makeup can change the way you feel when you’re having a bad day. on weekends when its hard to get out of bed and set out to run errands, I start by doing my hair and makeup just to get me going and then the rest of the day feels like a piece of cake.
I also love that unlike clothing, you don’t have to be a specific size to wear it. you can use it all year long whether you have gained a few holiday pounds or shaped up for summer, your makeup “wardrobe” never has to change 😀 (except of course if you want it to, which all makeup lovers constantly do)

Makeup matters because it is empowering. A swipe of a new lipstick color or a whole new look can can dramatically change how a woman, or anyone else, feels about herself.
With makeup, the possibilities are endless.

I agree completely. I love makeup’s ability to transform as well as lift my mood. Just had a disagreement with my college roommate from years ago about makeup, but to each her own opinion. I’m all in. Love your double wing!

I also think there’s something to the whole ritual of makeup too that i find soothing…time to sit quietly in the morning, focused, where i don’t think about anything else.

Love your double wing eyeliner! Make-up really does boost the confidence of so many so why should it be deemed as unimportant? Anything that makes a person feel better about themselves is a good thing and without that touch of foundation, I personally would feel on edge that people were looking at my skin in a bad way! Shouldn’t care but it’s a fact that make-up makes a difference to people’s way of thinking about themselves so yes, make-up is important! :)xx

Makeup takes me from wallflower to bubbly party girl way better than a couple of margaritas! But also, makeup can change how people react to me – I get better service, I get attention at meetings when I’m talking… It’s a sad fact, but appearance is pretty important for most people.

Makeup matters because art matters. Makeup matters because culture matters. Makeup matters because self-expression, talent, and self-confidence matters.

Makeup matters because we always need that extra to feel better everyday and no matter it’s with lipstick, gloss, blush, whatever you love.
Also as Alison M said is a form of self-expression that makes bigger your self-confidence.
Finally it’s true it makes people together, only look at us: speaking different languages, living in different countries but we’re talking because of makeup.

I agree with everything that has been said. I can wake up feeling yucky, but if I put on some makeup I feel instantly better. I’m not artistic but I do feel like an artist sometimes.
One of the best things is new makeup. I love opening a new eyeshadow palette.

For me, makeup matters bc it’s my medium. It’s how I express myself & my creativity. It’s my outlet. And I wear it like my best accessory. I like how it makes me feel & that it enables me to enhance all of my features. Sometimes, I can go a few days without applying it bc I’m just lounging around the house. But, when I apply it on the next day, it immediately improves my mood. It makes me feel girly, dainty, & feminine. And when I sit at my make-shift vanity, it’s my time. It’s the time that I take to pamper me. Some say that diamonds are a girl’s best friend. But diamonds are nothing if I don’t get my side of makeup!

I love your point on bringing people together! I’ve made so many great friends (like you, and the ladies I had the privilege of working with at Macy’s) through a common love of makeup!
It’s also a great artistic outlet. It’s not just about looking “pretty” it’s about making an impression! It helps boost confidence too!

Love this post! Makeup really is very empowering and brings people together. I love that I can embrace a natural look, just enhancing what I got, or totally change it up with a fun eye look. Makeup for me is also a fun pick-me-up on bad days. I love that I can go to the drugstore and instantly have a mood lift just by window shopping or looking at makeup. As I’ve gotten older, I pretty much buy only what I need or what I know works, but at times it is a lot of fun to buy into a limited edition set or new funky piece of a collection.
Another thing I really love about makeup is being able to buy into designer brands, like in dept stores or at Sephora, without paying $1,000 for a purse or a t-shirt. Yeah, $50 for a Dior eye palette does seem steep, but it sure beats paying over $600 for Dior shoes. Especially since paying for Dior shoes or a purse would be half or almost a full paycheck for me. Designer makeup gives you a chance to own the luxury and feel pampered once in a while. Since I can’t buy it all the time, going to Sephora is like a treat for me.

Makeup keeps me sane! It’s like a retreat from the world sometimes. I love the way it makes me look and feel. I’m always so happy playing in makeup or shopping for it. It’s a great creative release and confidence booster. It’s my favorite a accessory!

Makeup matters for sure!!! It’s art that you can wear on your face! Some of my peeps don’t get why I have a million nude/beige lippies. Would one say to Picasso, “Pablo, why do you have so many shades of blue paint?” !?!?!?! Anywho- love the blog- it’s part of my nightly relax routine and Karen- you are one funny chick!!!

Makeup matters for me because it boosts my confidence. I always used to get down on myself for my looks but since I’ve started teaching myself how to apply everything, I feel like I’ve been able to unlock all kinds of potential within myself. Sometimes I get made fun of for having so many lipsticks or eyeshadow palettes, but who cares? I have fun just doing it each morning!
Marjo says
I totally agree! A new lipstick, a bit of macara, and I feel much better. Oh, and by the way I’m following your blog now for almost a year and I love it. You are so funny and down to earth, you can really make my day. And I must say, you ALWAYS look stunning.
Yesterday, I was in a MAC-shop (there are only 3 in Belgium

Makeup matters because so many different people can get so many different positive things out of it! 🙂 But I think I’m just re-hashing what you’ve already so eloquently expressed 🙂

There’s a lot you can do with makeup, the colors, the techniques, the looks. There are countless of possibilities! In a way, it’s how someone can express themselves. 🙂

I agree with you completely! Makeup can also give you confidence. That and my repressed inner artist are why I wear it!

I got interested in makeup when I had my four wisdom teeth out last year. I was feeling so unattractive because my face was swollen and hideous. I spent the days afterward watching YouTube tutorials and got hoooked. I think makeup taps into my creative and artistic side and I like the whole online community aspect of it. Not to mention that it makes me feel pretty. What’s not to love?
