More and more men are secretly dipping into makeup bags, a new survey says, with tweezers (39%) topping the list of beauty products men borrow from their partners, followed closely by moisturizer (37%).
Most won’t admit it, though (only 42% did), but maybe they should.
El Hub, if you’re reading this, feel free to use my nail files (your claws are sharp!). 🙂

I voted for moisturizer! I also think conditioner is a good one to add. 🙂

Happy Saturday!
My bf could use moisturizer and those pore cleaning strips more often, he gets yucky black heads that I have to tell him to get rid of.
He does use conditioner though, with his 1/4 of an inch long hair, which seems silly to me…but he says it feels soft. Gotta love men!

This will probably say some bad things about my taste in men, but they really need to shower more. My ex boyfriend was notoriously dirty. Every so often I’d have to say, “umm, dude, you need to take a shower.”
Blech, I’m glad I’m not with him anymore. I need to find a cleanly guy, stat!
As for the poll, I said tweezers, facials (because dudes often have some ruddy facial skin), and other (to say that some need to shower more.)

My poor dad is afraid of using beauty products (or to be more gender-neutral I suppose I should say “personal care items”). His skin was super-flaky and dry and gross – until I gave him my 100 point gift from Sephora, a Dior moisturizer. He uses so little and now it’s not disgusting. And I can giggle that he uses a fancier moisturizer than I do! I don’t care, I love my Korres.
Otherwise, let’s be real. More men should buy actual deodorant and axe the excessive cologne/body spray. The cloud of scent isn’t fooling anyone if a dude is sweating.
Sylvie says
My dad uses a better eye serum than I do! haha,
Also, I agree with you that men should buy actual roll-on deodorants. Seriously what’s with the stupid spray because they waste more product deodorizing the air than themselves. And there are German shephards who smell more pleasant than the musky smell of “ocean fresh” deodorant stewed with sweat.
Guys really need educating from a young age.

My BF has really flakey, awful skin, and it’s just dying of thirst. I’ve been trying forever to get him to use moisturizer, but he says he hates how it feels and it’s just “not manly.” Sigh, I’m going to keep trying, but I wish he thought it were more acceptable!

that’s such a funny poll! i’m dying to go at my boyfriend with a tweezer… his unibrow is NOT cute. and sometimes i have to remind him to shave. haha
Ana V says
Why does it seems like guys don’t ever use moisturizer? I have been trying to get my dad to put some on every morning so his skin doesn’t get dry and also because most moisturizers have SPF in them which protects from premature aging!
Also, guys, go easy on the axe. No girl finds it attractive to walk into a cloud of overpowering man scent.

Oh, there is nothing worse than having to sit next to a guy in class who needs to learn what nail clippers, tweezers, lip balm, deodorant, toothbrush/toothpaste and facial products. It drives me mad. My entire senior year I had to spent next to a guy who needed all but the deodorant. There is nothing cute about a unibrow, smelly breath or zits. I felt like I needed license to put a million pore pads, wax pads, and gum around him (does anybody remember the episode of 8 Simple Rules where Kari and Bridget give Rory a makeover? I love hilariously every time I see that episode!).
I also second axing the AXE/Cologne. Men just don’t seem to understand how to apply it correctly or that people may be allergic to the stuff (ME). I’m noticing a lot of women in my area are giving up perfume but the men are getting engrossed in the stuff. What is wrong with smelling like Dove soap?
Sylvie says
I understand what you’re going through! And seeing that I live in France where men are hairy to begin with, oh god, I think I’ve seen a lifetime’s worth of unibrows. I have to suppress my inner urge to take a tweezer to their faces! And what’s with the not brushing their teeth thing? Seriously, I gag sometimes when someone opens their mouth and out comes a puff of toxic fumes. And some ass actually mocked me when I said “do you take only 30 seconds to brush your teeth?” and he said yea and stuck out his tongue at me, and I saw a thick layer of fur on it and I said “have you never heard of a tongue cleaner?” and he thought I made it up and said “is there also an ass cleaner?”. I wanted to give him a tight slap across the face.
Katie & Zena says
Ew to the thousandth degree. Or better yet, use your toothbrush to clean your tongue while your brushing your teeth. Brush your mouth with a toothbrush that has actual toothpaste on it for at least a minute (two is even better), floss and mouthwash. It doesn’t seem that hard. I don’t remember how German men were about their hygiene. I was nearly three when I moved from there.
US men at least know how to shave their facial hair and most are pretty good about hygiene. It’s the cologne, lack of using nail files and the awful unibrow thing that seems to be universal. I think we need an en masse unibrow waxing spree. The US, unfortunately, suffers from men overusing the hair products though. I’ve never seen so many men have the crunchy-shiny hair look from using way too much gel or pomade and hair spray in my life.
You should have slapped him and said, “Tu me fais chier” or something as rude back. I would be the person who’d just storm off though. I can’t make myself slap someone unless I’m really mad for some bizarre reason. I just storm off and normally have the biggest crying session! It’s truly bizarre!

*wants to check off everything, and then some*
(Except for the makeup. I just can’t get on the guys-wearing-makeup train, though it would be nice if they took a little more time on themselves! Hair product is a must-have. And cleaning up those brows. Plus a proper skincare routine…)

I feel proud of myself that I managed to turn my bf from a unibrow caveman with seriously congested pores into a civilized person with TWO eyebrows and an acceptable number of blackheads. My accomplishments so far are getting him to wash his face with a cleanser instead of just water, moisturize every night (I’m aiming for day and night now :P), use an exfoliating scrub once a week, pluck his own eyebrows in the middle when necessary, and trim his nostril hairs. The next target area? His armpits. I face the same problem as the other readers- asphyxiating from the overpowering odor of deodorants. I think that guys need to overuse deodorants BECAUSE they refuse to shave their armpits: hairy armpits means they perspire more and so they stink more, so they use MORE deodorants/cologne to mask the smell but that means US choking to our deaths when we walk into the bathroom after they’re done with fumigating the forests they’ve got going under their arms.
If someone has an idea about how to get them to shave, please share!
Katie & Zena says
You could say you won’t shave your legs or pits until he did. Then again, that could become really uncomfortable on your part. I can’t go without shaving my armpits for a more than two weeks. I usually shave those weekly. I normally shave my legs once-a-month just because I have fine hair and it grows so slowly.
OR, you could fumigate the bathroom with your perfume/hair product scent/etc of choice so HE chokes on your perfume. Or you could shave them when he’s asleep if he’s a deep sleeper, but that’s a bit extreme.
Sylvie says
I don’t intend to hold him hostage by threatening my own beauty routines 😛 Also, I don’t need to shave my armpits anymore because I had IPL done on them 😉 Though, as a word of advice, if you’re considering that, go to a doctor instead of beauty salons. I suspect that beauty salons have access only to lower-energy lasers since they aren’t all that trained, and so you need more sessions to be completely hair free. At least that’s what I experienced.
As for getting my bf to tame his armpits, I had him look at this post and Karen’s poll and all the comments by all the readers and I told him that it’s a universal problem- guys overusing deodorants. He said he doesn’t want to shave because it would itch so I said, fine, at least trim it or something, it’s a lot more hygienic if he’s got less hair trapping sweat and bacteria. Seriously, WE endure itch in places they can’t even imagine, so who’s the man now? So he agreed and he’ll do something. I guess I found the answer to my own question- talk to them nicely and have them look at this post!

I say moisturizer and sunscreen because most guys I know don’t use moisturizers ever even if they really need some. They also don’t use SPF unless they are going to the park or beach. I want to put down tweezers as well because some guys have a sparse amount of hair between their eye brows that is not thick enough to be a uni-brow, but it s there and a bit of an eye sore.

I’m not big on the whole male grooming thing, but damn, by the looks of some guys faces they’ve never heard of moisturizers before. Seriously, dry, flaky skin is SO not cute! Same for lips. And I agree with the above commenters who said guys need to lay off the Axe/Old Spice/etc. and jump on the deodorant bandwagon. Those body sprays smell like greasy old man >.<

I’ve voted for facial scrubs and masks but the list was so impressive that I’ve wanted to pick other options too. 🙂 I see that moisturizer ranks high, but most of men don’t want to use such a products because they considered to be designed only for women or for gays :). If you can believe this conception :). Last year I’ve spent 3 months in Siberia and there if you can believe men don’t even want to wax in some parts of the body, they say only gays do it. Grrrrr
