No matter how many times I’ve done it myself at home, hair coloring is just not one of my talents.
It’s like I’m finger painting with dye all over my face, the bathroom, my clothes… sometimes even a little in my hair. 🙂
Lovely.
Wouldn’t be so bad if the end results were better, but they’re usually a little off, with overly dark patches here and there.
That’s why I look forward to those rare trips to the salon to get my roots done. I’ll mark appointments on my calendar weeks out.
It’s definitely a splurge… I could save money by always coloring at home, but the results with a pro’s help are just so much better than mine. I tell myself it’s cool as long as I do my own waxing and painting my nails.
What’s the bane of your beauty existence? Is it shaving, plucking, coloring or painting your nails? Do you wish someone else could exercise for you? Would you rather face hordes of ravenous zombies than have to pluck your eyebrows? What’s your least favorite beauty ritual and why?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

oh my goodness there are so many things I hate about beauty rituals. but I’m horrible at plucking my eyebrows.
i let them either get bushy ish(i at least try and pluck a few strays) or i have a friend wax/pluck/thread them so i dont have to pay to get it done
Kate & Zena says
Plucking. I hate it. Tweezers are very addicting for me and I have a hard time stopping. I just threw my (cheap) tweezers out so I can give my brows a chance to grow. So, I’m tweezerless for the moment. I know there a lot of other girls have trichotillomania in terms of pulling their own hair out with their hands but mine is tweezers. Give me a pair of tweezers and I’ll pluck for no reason it seems. Time to enter Tweezing Detox.
I stopped coloring my hair last year. It’s an expensive and smelly habit. I’ve gotten more compliments on my natural hair color than any of the times I’ve colored my hair. It’s really strange!

Oh my. Waxing my ‘stache makes me feel so manly… until I’m done, then I feel like a pretty pretty princess. 🙂 And waxing my legs HURTS, but it’s so worth the smooth, hairless legs for days.
Laura Benedict says
My eyebrows are blond enough that I can go 4-6 weeks between waxings–thank goodness.
What I really hate is doing my mascara. I have thick, but short and pale blond lashes. They’re forever clumpy. Ick.
I could never do home coloring, just like I could never do my own dentistry!

Is it weird that I don’t *have* a least favourite beauty routine? I mean, I don’t love waxing my upper lip when my skin is sensitive, and I’m not big on shaving when I’ve hurt my back… but on a normal day, I kinda love ’em all.
(Unlike you, I absolutely adore hair colour! Whether I’m doing it or getting it done, I’m totally at peace with a brush, bowl, and colour codes. Ahh, the smell of the Schwartzkopf Igora Royal colour line… it’s like the calming scent of lavender for a girl like me.)

I don’t mind doing my eyebrows – in fact, the only way I’ve been good at doing my own tweezing is to do it during my study breaks in high school and college, as a way of keeping myself from snoozing all over my homework. 😉
De-fuzzing my upper lip, on the other hand? HATE. I have problems with taking a tweezer to the mustache area. I hate the fact that bleaching only gives me a mustache and at-home waxing kits don’t work on my face. So, of course, I have a professional do it for me… and even then.
Another thing that I don’t hate, but don’t really enjoy doing on my own: pedicures. In fact, anything nail-related drives me crazy – I’m OK with the cutting and cuticle-removing… but totally inept when it comes to putting on polish *and* keeping the stuff on my nails. 🙁

getting my eyebrows threaded. HURTS.
Catherine says
My least favorite is definitely maintaining my eyebrows. No matter how good I am with keeping up plucking, I just can’t seem to keep them in shape or trim the longer hairs just right… so I get mine waxed every 3 months or so.
Other than that, I hate shaving… but I still do it lol.

Kate & Zena hit the nail on the head with the trichotillomania. The second I get stressed, hello uneven eyebrows! Eff! But hair removal would definitely be the bane of my existence. Shaving, plucking, waxing – I do it all myself (and do a pretty damn good job me thinks), but it’s so painstaking and such a hassle!
Doreen says
I really don’t like painting my finger nails that much. I’m incredibly clumsy with my left hand, and so I can’t paint my right nails as perfect as my left hand nails (I’m right-handed). And, the scent of nail polish isn’t exactly enticing, either. So, I usually just paint my fingers with sheer pink/corals or ones with iridisence–they’re nearly foolproof. I’m fine with painting my toes, though. 🙂

Shaving my legs. I ALWAYS miss a spot, no matter how thorough I think I’ve been. And then there’s the facial hair thing…sigh. I have to remove hair from my the sides of my face because my guy friends would make fun of me for it in high school. I’m gonna have to start waxing my face! Not fun!

I hate waxing. Even if someone else does it for me it’s super painful it’s like i’ve to convince myself to go then brace myself for the pain:-( I also hate removing dark nail polish from my nails. It’s so much work especially bright colors. Ugh.

It’s a toss up between hair removal and painting my toenails. Shaving my legs is such a chore, so I usually skip it. But they’re really sparse and take a long time to grow back, and you can’t really see them, so yay for me! Painting my toenails is also time consuming so I usually do it when I’m watching TV. But I hate when it smudges! Then I have to do it all over again. Le sigh.

Hair removal. I don’t mind waxing my lip, but shaving my legs or using depilatory is always at the bottom of my list.
Astrid says
I don’t have much body hair, and my eyebrows are super sparse, so hair removal isn’t something I spend my time on…but covering up my horrible dark circles is! I’m SO sick of dabbing on concealer every single day! Dab dab dab, set with powder, dab some more, day in and day out…ugh!
sdpfeiffy says
I usually put off upper lip waxing as long as possible, just because I feel so much more effective when I can get rid of a lot at once. But I really hate washing my face at night–it’s a 2 or 3 step process for me and sometimes I just want to go to bed!
Molly says
shaving..i always get razor burn and nicks and i cannot, for the life of me, seem to get all of the hair on the backs of my legs..chewbacca was one lucky fellow.
Tiffany says
shaving my legs for sure! it takes too much time and then I have to do it all over again in 2 days. I’m surprised so many people hate doing their eyebrows the most! Mine don’t really grow in anymore – every once in a while I’ll get a stray, but for the most part they don’t grow anymore.
tgz says
Waxing my legs. I would take a whole afternoon of pain and get less than perfect results, so I treat myself to professional waxing now…
Patti says
I would have to say shaving because its a pain and the hairs grow back very soon afterwards. Plus all those nicks and cuts and not getting all the hair out. Also, I can never do my eyebrows so I always have to have it done every couple of months or so-

Hey Karen!
I HATE styling my hair! Weird, I know! Hair removal, I’m totally fine with, but styling … forget it! It takes forever and I’m not very good at it and blowdrying always makes my arms tired … I’m so bummed that the weather is getting cooler and I can’t just leave the house with wet hair anymore.

Hi Karen,
The first thing that popped into my mind when I think least favorite beauty ritual? WAXING. As I’m getting older, random hairs are sprouting out of my chin! So I have to wax my face at least every other week.

I hate LOATHE plucking those stray hairs that crop up where they have no business cropping! Taking off glittery nail polish is not so much fun either! It is really annoying also when you slip and over moisturize ,wasting dollops of lovely cream on wetbath towels…grr!
Kristen says
I despise painting my nails more than anything else in the entire world. I never get it right, so I end up with polish all over the place, then have to take even more time to clean up with a q-tip dipped in polish remover. And I’m using a dark color, forget it; it stains my skin and the whole process just takes forever. Waiting for nails to dry kills me cause you can’t do anyhthing.
And the sad part is, I think manicures are a total waste of money, so I rarely get them. I just walk around with chipped polish, looking messy.

Hi Karen,
My least fav thing is going to the salon and getting my color/cut done. I go every 8-9 weeks and have been for (gulp) about 15 years now.
I have had WAY too many hair color disasters at home while trying to do color myself! I just can’t stand sitting there on a Saturday morning for 2 1/2-3 hours, it drives me bonkers but my natural hair color will not cut it!
Oh I’m also extremely sick of putting on anti-wrinkle stuff every morning and night also, but I only see that increasing in the future, sigh.

Waxing my legs. I love the way my legs feel afterwards, but I hate the pain and the mess. So I shave often since it’s easier.
Oh gosh, hair coloring. The smell, the mess and the patchiness. o_O I don’t do it at home anymore since my cousin is a senior stylist now. She knows what to do, I pay her, hair looks fab, I am a happy camper =)

I actually hate getting my hair cut. I have short hair, so I have to do it every 4 weeks. I used to have an awesome stylist and I didn’t mind it so much then. I’m so happy when it’s done though and I have no intentions of going back to long hair, so it’s just something I have to put up with.

Washing my face at night..I have to make sure I get all of the mascara off. If I don’t it really bugs me.

While I love painting my nails, I really do not enjoy taking off polish. Sometimes it is worth the $8. to have a polish change, but how lazy I feel for doing it!
Solé says
I actually enjoy the majority of my DIY beauty rituals, especially manis and pedis. But I’m with you with the dying of the hair. Unfortunately, my hair went prematurely gray, and I have no choice but to dye it. Since I can’t afford to get it done, I have to do it myself, and since it grows so fast (used to be a good thing), I have to color on average every four weeks. I’ve gotten a lot better at it, but it’s still really hard to do a root application on myself.
lAUREN says
I agree with Mica, definetly haircuts. Mine’s so short I’m definetly in the two week range and I always do it myself so that’s a horrifying mess in the bathroom every two weeks!

Delice says
I love plucking :))) I’m doing it so much better in my bathroom as I’ve doing it for 10 years. But there is one thing I hate and I would let anyone do it and that is facial treatments, masks, scrubbing. I hate having things on my face 😀 that’s why I use a very light and good foundation but when it comes to wearing a mask, it’s like having a blanket on my face.
Karen says
Hi Delice,
What’s your favorite foundation? I’m always looking for good ones that feel light.
Also, if you like things that feel light on your face, you might like tinted moisturizer. Laura Mercier makes a good one.

Oh… where to begin? I find a lot of beauty rituals unpleasant (but necessary 🙂 ). I hate shaving (like one of you said earlier, I always miss a spot or I get goosebumps in the shower and it hurts to shave). I don’t like having to cover up my dark circles in the morning. It’s probably one of the longest steps out of my makeup ritual and it has to be done every day. I also dislike washing my hair just because it takes so long to wash, comb out, and dry… and once it’s wet, it has to be restraightened. Of course, after the rituals are done, I feel better having done them… 😀
