Here it is: it took me forever to figure out how to put eyeshadow in my crease.
I know! — but I think it’s because of my eye shape. My crease isn’t very deep, so I had to experiment a lot with different brushes and the placement of products to come up with something that didn’t always look weird.
On that note, I must say, the new MAC Oval 3 Masterclass Brush has totally changed everything for me when it comes to crease color.
Ever since that trip to the MAC Pro Store last week, I’ve been rockin’ it daily. The brush is nothing short of AH-MAY-ZING! Really. The oval shape perfectly fits in my crease area and places shadow precisely where it needs to be.
It also hits the product Goldilocks zone by placing just the right amount of product on my skin. I used to spend forever and a day building up color in the crease, but now with the Oval 3 it takes me about half that time (so, half of forever?).
The brush has truly changed my crease color life! If you haven’t tried it yet, give it a go next time you stop by a MAC store.
A’ight, for today’s question, what’s one makeup technique you struggle with (or have struggled with) that seems to be easy for everyone else? Please share in the comments.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. Have you been watching The Voice this season? Did you happen to notice Tessanne Chin’s eye makeup last night? Wasn’t that glittery gold smokey eye so pretty!?

Something I’ve always struggled with and still do to this day is trying to apply my foundation flawlessly without looking cakey or overdone
Kiss & Make-up says
How to draw perfectly symmetrical eyeliner wings! I always do great on one eye and mess up the other, boo. I also still need to master the art of applying false eyelashes…
Mimi Kitten says
I feel like I can’t get my blush right! It looks awkward, but I am working on it ahah. I feel like it’s so simple but I just can’t get that perfect look!
Chic Lapin says
At first I struggled A LOT with the lash curler! I always ended with bent lashes (from using it only once, too hard and too close to the roots), instead of nicely curled ones, lol. 😛
Alyssa E says
My Brows!!! Every tutorial the girls seem to glide on brows with a pencil in seconds flat. No matter what products I use, pencil or shadow and brush, just can’t nail it!
Cindy says
Thats amazing. Do you ever make tutorials?? I wonder if you can show us how to apply it cuz i am forever working on my crease . I have a small lid so it’s always a problem. Thanks!

Eyeliner is my nemesis. Specifically anything really close to the lashline – tightlining, waterlining… ARGH. I can do winged liner but ask me to do a tightline or subtle, non-flicked eyeliner and I’m like “lol wat’s dat?”
Lovisa says
I find it hard to do a winged eyeliner, it always seems that the eyeliner magically disappears in the outer corner of my eye…
A OT question for you: where can I find your lovely iPhone case? It’s so cute!
Judith says
Mascara! I have the opposite problem with you I have quite a prominent crease and I often stain myself with the eyeshadow!
Lorraine says
Ditto on the eyeliner wings. I have tried all the tips, nothing seems to work consistently. Although I can do a great job on someone else’s eyes! Just not on myself. BTW I adore your skittles mani! those colors look fab together, pray tell what they are.
Petra says
Winged liner… I can make a small demure one put dang-it I want full on drama sometimes and then it just wont go on in an orderly fashion..
Love your look today!

Eye Brow and Eye shadow application!

Putting fake eyelashes on. There is always a gap or the ends dont stay down.
Vanessa says
I’m the same as you. The crease is the worst for me. I just got Wayne Goss brushes and can do it now perfectly.
I think I am going to get the smallest Master Class brush for my brows.
Nina says
I struggle with winged eyeliner, especially now that I am approaching 50 and I’ve notice a very slight movement downward of my top lids (of course more so on one side). I’ve found that switching to a dark brown liner actually helps to make the look better on me most days. And at my age I still cannot manage to apply false lashes! It’s kind of embarrassing to admit that. My 21 year old is great at it!
Alyssa says
For a long time, I struggled with winged eyeliner. Oddly enough, I’m still not amazing at it with gel but liquid is a piece of cake (especially if it’s in a pen style applicator) recently however, whenever I would put on foundation within a few hours it would settle into my smile lines. Problem is I’m only 18 so it’s not like it’s from aging, and I even switched to mineral foundation (this was a problem with liquid too however). If anyone has any tips it would be much appreciated as I feel I’ve tried everything!

I have trouble doing fancier/more involved eyeshadow looks, and trouble filling in my brows. My brows are a different color than my hair (they’re blondey/taupey and my hair is red), and I like a light blond to fill them in, and have trouble finding products and techniques that work for me. I have a former coworker who’s a professional makeup artist (went to school for it, currently works for Urban Decay), and she does consultations, so I might buy an appointment with her as a gift to myself to step up my game.
I do think I did well with my look today with the Laura Mercier Artist palette – going to the Detroit advertising awards tonight, had to glitz it up!
Marilyn says
I can’t draw a straight line with eyeliner! It shouldn’t be hard but it is. So I usually end up blending it into my eyeshadow so it looks more symmetrical.
Elaine says
I have trouble with Maybelline 24 hour tattoo shadow it dries before I can blend.
ericca says
The cat eye or winged eyeliner is the hardest.
Rachel P says
Ohh, I strugglebus my way with SO many different things, but I guess I’m still learning a lot about brows. I recite brow mantras in my head as I check out my work in the mirror… “They’re sisters, not twins. Sisters, NOT TWINS!” and I still end up perfecting because I think “that one is so much thicker”, blah blah blah. Also, bronzer. I try to avoid contour stripes or muddy looks, so I’ve gotten better with practice. In fact, I’ve recently ordered the Too Faced Milk Chocolate Soleil- I think it will be the perfect winter shade for me! The bronzers I have used in the past were too shimmery, too dark, or too meh.
Interestingly, I am quite adept with the cat-eye flick/eyeliner precision!
Barbs LeCupcake says
lining my water line, with anything really. cat-eyes are a nightmare for me because the outer corner of my eyes will smudge and melt whatever i put underneath, be it gel liner on the waterline, 24/7 pencil underneath, eyeshadow to balance the look… i hate it.
Iris says
I’ve struggled with how to apply eyeliner perfectly. I’m afraid of putting things near my eye. I skip this step with a smokey eye, oddly enough.
Lucy says
Maybe false eyelashes. I’m getting better, but…Also, the perfect liquid eyeliner shape…on both eyes! 😀
Tammy James says
Hello: My question is what is a good way to apply false eyelashes? And alsot he brush you were talking about from Mac the oval 3 does that work well on shadows other than powder or cream? Thank you
Elle says
Eyeliner wings and crease shadow for sure. And yes, Tessanne looked freaking amazing last night. She always does! I love her. I’m rooting for her or Cole to win it all!
Kristy says
False eyelashes! Impossible to put on, and then I can see and feel them the whole time. And yet some people wear them everyday.
shah'ada says
a cat eye/winged liner 🙁 i still need help!!
Kica says
The winged eyeliner!! Heck by the time I master it……it will be outta style! But I won’t care I’m still gonna rock it. lol
Kalli says
Winged/cat eye liner! I want big and dramatic, but I think my eye shape is too round or something. I can do a decent look with some gel liner and an angled brush but I prefer the look of a good liquid liner like MUFE or Urban Decay! I also have trouble with false eyelashes, one always ends up wonky looking (as in, I can’t get it lined up to my lash line and it looks wavy!)
Katherine says
I have hooded lids with no crease at all, so I find placing colour in the ‘crease’ almost impossible. Every time I try it, it just ends up being a blurry mess across most of my eyelid. Without a crease, I also find it difficult to work out where to put darker colour in the outer corner. I’m actually more interested in mastering that than in placing crease colour.
E.D. says
I’m terrible with eyeliner, which is odd because I have no issues touching my eyes. I just can’t manage a good line on the top lids, even with shadow.
Montréalaise says
As much as I’ve tried, I just can’t do a smoky eye – I always end up looking as though someone punched me in the face. I’ve read instructions, watched tutorial videos, and I still can’t manage it.
gaby says
I am a makeup newbie and while I have found the right shade of foundation, how to apply it, good primer to keep my oily skin at bay, how i do my brows, lipstick, but I am having a hard time with blush. I sometimes feel like i didnt put enough so i put more and then i go out and i see that i put too much and i have to go back inside and buff it out to the best of my abilities
Vanessa says
Well diffused eyeliner without using eyeshadow (it smudges on me).
Sylvia says
Karen, you look beautiful in that picture!
I was going to say eyeliner but I feel like that is troublesome for many others as well. So I’ll have to go with applying mascara in a way that doesn’t come off on my lids. No matter how I apply it, it always touches my eyelid and then I have to fix my eyeshadow. Perhaps it is the way my eye is shaped. What to do…
Karen says
Thank you, Sylvia!
Brooke says
Liquid liner!!! I absolutely cannot do it! My eyes are small, so I blame it on that fact, but I think….it may be the fact that I just. can’t. do. it. 🙁
Shari says
Everything?! LOL I’m just really starting to get “into” it after years of a daily five minute makeup job. Now that my girl is grown and (almost) flown, I have a lot more me time. Better late than never, right? 😉
Makai says
Eyeliner! I love the look of a neatly lined eye, like the tightline, but I just can’t seem to get it. Pretty much anything involving the eye and eye makeup, I just can’t get. So I just forego any eye makeup all.
kristen @ glambunctious says
False lashes! Bright lips! I can pull off dark, gothic lip colors with ease, but hand me an electric coral? Jay-Z’s 99 Problems starts playing in my head!
Amanda says
Highlighting and Contouring. I CAN NOT for the life of me figure it out, so I’ve given up.
breyerchic04 says
Perfect liner, either a cat eye or a smokey one. I can fake a thicker lash line with liner though.
modernfoppery says
Eyeliner! I’d love to be able to do a flawless cat eye, but my eyelid creases (yes, I have multiple creases on each eye) come all the way down to the outer corners of my eyes, so I can’t flick out my eyeliner without running into those creases.
marisa says
Applying liquid eyeliner. Many people I know just effortlessly are able to apply it. And they look faaabulous. Not me, I end up with a smudgy, crooked line. That’s ok though. I’m pretty amazing at applying mascara. =P
Emma Lam says
Even though I’ve been wearing makeup for 3 years now, I still can’t master applying mascara perfectly! I always get some on my eyelids, every time!!!
Danielle says
I also really struggle with putting eye shadow in my crease! I don’t have much space, so sometimes I feel like it can look weird.
Cookie says
False lashes application (simply impossible)…and cat eye using eyeliner (also impossible)
Kiara says
Blush! Sometimes I like the look, most times I look weird. I think it makes my face look rounder so I skip blush. Still practice though! Also constant battle with winged liner!
Daniel says
Blending!!!! I don’t know why, but it never looks soft enough!!! What can I do?? 🙁
