My best: Being blown away by Lancome’s new blue bombshell, the Declaring Indigo collection for fall! Artliner in Indigo Charm, oh, how I love thee…
My worst: I’ve been rockin’ Medusa mane all weekend long. Yes, my hair’s been a frizzy, poofy, unruly mess, ugh! Thank goodness for black ponytail holders and headbands. 🙂
What were your best and worst beauty experiences of the week? Spill the beans in the comments.

two best palettes in my arsenal right now:
UD’s ‘Get Baked’ and NARS’ ‘Modern Love’
I have a feeling i’ll be alternating between these two the rest of the summer!
beauty boo-boo – I’m in need of a eyebrow and lip wax! hoping my lovely blended shadows will distract the stray hairs on my upper lip (not so cute!)
Karen says
Hi Lexi,
Yay! You just mentioned two of my favorite palettes of the moment. What are your favorite combos so far?
Laura F. says
Hey Karen! Hope your week kicks off to an excellent start…
I am mad crazy in love with Makeup 4 Ever’s black kohl eyeliner. No smearing, smudging or migration. Its been over 100 in Kansas lately, so this is the only eyeliner I can use in my vast collection.
I had been doing really well, face-wise, but I broke out the other day! Nothing massive, but it sent me back in time to being 13 and perpetually fighting acne…
Karen says
Hi Laura F.,
Hmm, are ya talking about their pencil, Aqua Eyes? I love those!
Sorry to hear about your breakouts. I’ve been dealing with a few pimples myself (stress and lack of sleep = zits).
Justine says
My Best: Getting an awesome MUFE consultation at Sephora and learning that I COULD rock a bright green smokey eye; sorting through my eyeshadow and realizing I have like enough eyeshadow to last me a lifetime ALREADY… it`s got rid of my sometimes desire for back-ups!
My Worst: Forgetting to take an extra Reactine before getting my eyebrows waxed AND telling my esthetician that I am allergic to the skin stuff she uses afterwards… hives are not fun. They are starting to go away though!
.-= Justine’s last blog post… With me, there is no posting in a timely manner… =-.
Karen says
Hi Justine,
Sweet! Kudos to you for going bold with green! 🙂 Is it something you think you’ll be able to wear for day, or is it more of a night look for you?
Lana says
I did my make up on Friday and Saturday night with Jest, Deep Truth and Black Tied by MAC and I have to admit, it was smokin’ hot.
Worst beauty experience was not actually getting to go out on either night and having to wash off all my hard (and beautiful) work. Argh.
.-= Lana’s last blog post… Baby Boy =-.
Karen says
Hi Lana,
Your eye look sounds so pretty. Did you do a smokey eye?
Emily says
Finally trying and buying benefit’s high beam is a definite ‘highlight’ to my week. Haha! In all seriousness, I’m pretty addicted to the product.
The lowlight.. Hmm…. Trying on creme blush and realising that I honestly don’t like the feel of having something sticky on my skin. That feeling doesn’t go away and I can’t just layer powder on top because it’s a BLUSH.
Karen says
Hi Emily,
Hmm, what cream blush did you try? They don’t always feel stick on the skin. It depends on the formula… I wear powder on top of mine all the time. Sometimes I even wear ’em on top of powder. If you need a few recommendations let me know!
Beth says
I think my best beauty experience this week was figuring out that if I mix MAC’s Hue and Syrup lipsticks together and slicking some MAC Trifle lipglass on top I get the best pink ever to go with smokey eyes.
The worst was ending up with severely swollen eyes from an allergic reaction to Soap & Glory’s “The Fab Pore” 15 minute peel mask – not nice!
.-= Beth’s last blog post… Review – Soap and Glory "The Fab Pore" 15 Minute Facial Peel =-.
Karen says
Hi Beth,
Ahh, Syrup! That’s one of my faves to wear with smokey eyes, too. 🙂
Happy Monday!
Ditte says
My best: was actually related to reading back on some of your blog texts, Karen, and you recommended someone to use a neutral brown with a pop of any colour. I tried that – used a neutral brown and Too Faced’s mono eyeshadow Label Whore – fab result 🙂
My worst: was using Rimmel’s infinite colour 140 hold up, which is a long-lasting lipcolour and discovering after 6 hours or so, that it caked up when I didn’t remember to reapply the gloss.
Karen says
Hi Ditte,
Yay! I’m happy to hear that it worked out for you. It’s a totally easy look, huh?
Tiffany says
My best: getting new MAC goodies from Color Craft!
My worst: giving myself a pedi with Laura Mercier 24K polish… it doesn’t look very good. I think my skin is too cool to rock the gold 🙁
Karen says
Hi Tiffany,
🙂 I’m glad to hear that you are loving your Colour Craft goodies.
I’ve been rockin’ my Cheeky Bronze 24/7!
Kim says
Best, when I rocked the gold and red eyeshadows for Gryffindor on the midnight premiere of Harry Potter. Worst, when my face broke out because of all the heat! 🙁
How are you lately? I’ve been okay — trying to get through the last couple of weeks of summer school. I just took a mini-vacation to Tulsa, OK this weekend. That was what I needed:)
Karen says
Hi Kim,
Nice! What did you do in Tulsa?
I’ve been pretty good. Looking for a new place to live and enjoying the summer weather. I’ve been writing about fall lately, and I’m SO NOT READY for fall. If I could I’d live someplace with an endless summer, sigh.
YadiQ says
best: rocking barielle’s decadence on my fingers and toes last week – totally made it easier to get thru the grind last week – baaad week it was
worst: hot humid and muggy nyc weather has my hair out of control – no matter what i do its just not behaving
Karen says
Hi Yadi,
I think the hair gods have cursed us both. When I woke up this morning it was sticking up in weird places like all kinds of crazy, LOL!
Time to bust out the straightening iron.
I hope this week is a better one for you. *crosses fingers*
ines + cha cha says
hey karen!
best moment – having a hawt hawt intense smokey eye for salsa dancing.
worst moments – when said smokey eye caused massive amounts of tearing and smeared to make me look like a crackhead, thanks to the humidity, gallons of sweat (i was WET not just perspiring, literally, my hair was sopping), heat and sensitive eyes w contact lenses.
second bad part came the morning after, where my whole body broke out in massive hives! taking a claritin helped calm it, but i woke up scratching myself to death, and i was covered in HUUUUUGE welts all over my body.
i gave cha cha a bath for the first time on friday. needless to say the poor thing wasn’t too happy. yowled and went nuts! he actually managed to run away sopping wet, hiding under the bed. i teased him out with some tuna, and finished washing him. he was ok once i started drying him… but it was the saddest most distressing sound i’d ever heard!

My best beauty experience was after borrowing my friends Clinique face wash, noticing a definite improvement in my skin.
My worst was going to the Chanel counter and not being a huge fan of the clerk. I never know how to tell the clerk I prefer to browse without her hovering. This is why I go to a specific person at the MAC in Georgetown. Unfortunately, I don’t think she’d come with me to Chanel… 😉
Tuhina says
My best beauty experience was the smokey eye I created on Saturday night with Bobbi Brown’s Galaxy long wear cream shadow. And my worst was realizing after an hour that it had faded into my creases because of the damn humidity and hot temps!
Karen says
Hi Tuhina,
Eek, I hate that. Hmm, maybe next time pop some Urban Decay Primer beneath it? It extends the lifetime shadows (don’t use it if you have to do a ton of blending, though).
Kajal Couture says
Best – I did my mom’s makeup and she loved it! She is super picky and it felt like an achievement to do a look that she really liked.
Worst – I haven’t tamed my eyebrows in…..eeks….forever!! I think I need a threading session today.
.-= Kajal Couture’s last blog post… MAC 109 Brush Review =-.
cloudburst says
Best – doing a super dark fall lip Friday night w/ my Chanel Maniac Rouge Allure
Worst – somehow accidently setting my alarm 1 hour early & then not being able to get back to sleep – result? I’m a tried mess today.
Karen says
Hi Cloudburst,
Nice! You go with your vampy lip look, girlfriend. 🙂
Vampy Varnish says
Best – Getting my new T3 Bespoke flatiron and realizing this thing is SOOOO much better than any drugstore flatiron!
Worst – This is more body than beauty but I saw my thighs in THE world’s worst mirror in a Sports Authority dressing room while trying on work out gear and almost melted inconsolably onto the floor in despair. Just horrific and it plagued me all weekend long, ugh.
.-= Vampy Varnish’s last blog post… Nordstrom Exclusive Dior Lemon Balm Nail Polish =-.
Karen says
Hi Vampy Varnish,
Have you ever tried their hair dryer? That thing changed my life, I swear!
shontay says
Best: I found mac’s brave new bronze and sunsational lipsticks online. I wore them to work (on different days, of course) and they worked! I had to trick bnb into working for me, but it did. I put either gold rebel or the new chanel gold gloss on top of both. It was poppin’!
Worst: My brows are tragic. I tweezed them to death and so now I am drawing them on until they grow back in. Well, let’s just say that some days I’m an artist and some days it looks like I gave the brush to a hobo and told him to have a ball. Yeah. Not a good week for the brows.
Karen says
Hi Shontay,
On no! What are you using to draw your brows in?
TaLaisa says
Best: Getting to play with the new MAC stuff. I’m LOVING the Madly Creative lipstick I bought with your prompting.
Worst: Two words. Monthly breakout. (And no concealer has succeeded to mask them).
.-= TaLaisa’s last blog post… Happy Valentines =-.
Karen says
Hi TaLaisa,
YAY! I’m so glad to hear that you love it. Have you tried it with clear gloss on top?!?
Vampy Varnish says
I haven’t but that’s next on my list whenever I can afford it. I go through cheap blow dryers every 6-9 months so I think it would be worth it.

best beauty experience of the week: my new acne facial soap bar from the best bath store
worst beauty experience of the week: when i wasnt able to browse at the chanel counter b/c the MUA was trying to sell me a million different things. i just want to browse and swatch in peace–that’s all. i ended up just leaving…but i was annoyed. LOL.
gio says
Best: getting the Sleek Acid palette. I love bright shadows and this palette features bold neon shades! I’m in love! Although I’m not sure how I’ll be able to pull some of the colors off.
Worst: I was in a rush one evening and I accidentally applied the wrong Avon lipstick. It didn’t go well with the eye makeup at all and I only realised it half an hour later 🙁

Got the same WORST for me. Hating my hair these days.
Best was buying new hand sanitizers. That counts, right? 😀
shontay says
Karen, I’m using makeup forever’s eyebrow corrector. I think it was sent to me by angels. I was using the too faced stencil set, but the last time I think I was just out of it and ended up with uneven brows. I had to basically pluck them off to even it out. It’s so funny now that I need to draw my brows on before I leave the house. They are so tiny now. Lol
Nancy says
Hope your Monday’s gone well! First the bad: who loves a good case of the icky-bloaties that comes with being a woman? I especially love the overwhelming feeling of fattiness. NOT FUN! And the good: you give such great advice on your blog (that I newly discovered and am TOTALLY addicted to! LOL) that I went in search of beauty events in my area. Just this past Saturday I attended a Meet the Artists Beauty Event at my Macy’s and had such fun. The best part?!? My MAC makeover!! I left with an awesome new look created especially for yours truly by those that are the great MAC artists, as well as a lovely MAC haul that included Technakohl eyeliner in Uniform and eyeshadow in Sumptuous Olive. On top of it, I was able to recreate the look at home, which is a huge feat for me! 🙂
Kate & Zena says
Best: Running around in mascara and eyeliner….and no other eye makeup. I haven’t been able to do that in a loooooooooong while.
Worst: A migraine came to plague me this week so my straight hair kinda got turned into a bird’s nest as I spent most of the week napping off said migraine.
Lo says
Best: My skin looked amazing all last week! And, when told I had to get ready for last-minute plans on Saturday (when I originally anticipated staying in), I managed to go from frizzy/frumpy/undone to hot/sexy/pulled together in about 10 minutes! I somehow threw on a full face of makeup PLUS a smoky eye in about 3 minutes, which I didn’t even realize was possible.
Worst: It’s waaaay hot and humid, and I can’t keep my bangs from staying straight… HATE COW LICKS!
Laura F. says
Hey Karen,
No, not the Aqua Eyes. I love those, but they are a bit too creamy for this muggy weather… I get MEGA migration. This is just the Makeup 4 Ever Kohl Pencils. I think its a Sephora-only item? But anyhow, the staying power is excellent and supposedly it works really well on your waterline. I’m too afraid of eye-mold for that mess.
Marisol says
My best would be that I am feeling more confident in not wearing as much make up. I used to have to be all made up because I felt more secure that way but lately, the natural look has been winning over a more made up look.
Worst would be that I spilled my Bed Hair Manipulator gel all over my bathroom sink. So sticky and hard to clean up. Ugh!
.-= Marisol’s last blog post… Kindle me this… =-.
redhead says
Best: FINALLY, my gums don’t bleed when I floss!!! 😀 Worst: I tried a smokey olive eye and looked demonic. :/ I’ll probably put some Juxt on the inner lid next time so I don’t have a stark crease color on my inner lid.
Karen says
Hi Redhead,
That’s an accomplishment! Seriously… once you get over that initial floss hump it gets easier.
Stephie says
Best: Getting a Sephora makeover for Cargo w/ the Tahiti palette. Green gradient on the lid, blue on the lashline, and purple mascara!
Worst: Putting my make up in the car on the way to my aunt’s wedding ceremony and it melting by the time we got there…
Karen says
Hi Stephie,
Isn’t the Tahiti Palette amazing? I didn’t think to wear it with purple mascara… I gotta try that. 🙂
lexi says
Ms. K,
I love flipside on my lid – club in my crease and the brown shade (forgot the name oops) in the outer corners-from get baked…
as for Modern Love – I am still experimenting but i do use Habanero on my lids for the most part and I line with Pandora…
Karen says
Hi Lexi,
Oh! I’ll have to try that your Get Baked look! What do you think of the liner? I actually liked it a lot more than I thought I would. It’s one of the best browns I’ve tried.
As for Modern Love, try Alhambra all over the eye lid, India Song on the lid and just into the crease and then line with Pandora. Super easy and very pretty!
