MY BEST: I found a new concealer at Sephora that I really, really like. It’s called TimeBalm, and a couple of you had recommended it in the comments a while back (THANK YOU!). You were totally right. It’s the jam! I’d been using Dior Sculpt, but Time Balm’s cheaper, covers more, stays put longer, and I think it even requires less blending.
MY WORST: You remember how thrilled I was about my new bangs a few weeks ago, right? Well, I think the honeymoon’s over. They’ve been sticking up at odd angles, laying in the wrong directions and generally NOT doing what I want them to do. Why do I always I forget how high maintenance fringe can be when I’m sitting in the chair at a salon? Oh, well… I guess if I decide to grow ’em out, at least I’ll have something to do, LOL!
Time to spill them beauty beans, babes. 🙂 Dish your best and worst beauty experiences of the week.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. Good almost-afternoon! Tabs and I stayed up practically all night long listening to drum and bass music (1.8.7’s Quality Rolls, HOLLA!) and fooling around with Photoshop. I haven’t quite woken up yet today, but it’s nothing a vat of coffee can’t fix. How’s your Sunday coming along?

BEST: At my MAC pro store Love Lace and Warm and Cozy came out early. I picked up a few things. I love Raven Kohl liner from Love Lace and MSF in By Candle Light from Warm and Cozy. I am just waiting for them to get the essential oils in stock because not everything is in stock for the early release.
Worst: I really can’t think of any but the fact that the early release of both Love Lace and Warm and Cozy is a double edged sword because I went in to buy concealer. The early release caught be off guard and budget a bit.
Tip for bangs: Try flat ironing it in the morning or at night clip it down one side and in the morning blow dry them or flat iron them in the direction you want. I only have a problem with bangs going in weird directions when I go to bed with my hair wet. 🙂

Best: A couple of Rock & Republic thngs I got from Hautelook–Spank blush & Exlie eyeshadow. I will def buy more the next time Hautelook has it on sale!
Worst: My hair is so freakin’ flat lately! It seems nothing I try works long term.
Moving this weekend and throughout next week. I HATE MOVING!!! And this is a really sucky time to move!!!!!!!!

Best: Sale at Bath&Body Works! I picked up the GingerMentha body spray, some of the temptations body washes, and a Winter Citrus perfume roll on all for half off! It was totally worth braving the holiday shopping crowds.
Worst: my crazy winter hair and hearing that Brittany Murphy died at the young age of 32. Was her makeover in Clueless not the epitome of 90’s styling?! *sigh* she will be missed.

Hy there! Super cool post, is always interesting to find out things about other people:D
So best experience: Had the courage to try the red eyeshadow make up that Kandee Johnson recommended from the last Gwen Stefani presentation and it really looks wonderful! It’s not as scary as I thought! (if somebody who’s reading this doesn’t know who Kandee is, go to youtube. fast!)
Worst experience: I have been searching all week long for a decent eyebrow light brown pencil and still haven’t found a decent one. God, please bring along that pencil that is right for me 🙂
kiss!
Happy Holidays everyone!

Last night, at sushi bar with friends, tried waterlining my eyes for once. Came home and saw I had a big black blob the size of an eraser head right under my eye. Fricking melting liner!!!! Classy.
Now digging through this blog’s archives for waterproof liner suggestions. I’m thinking urban decay or maybe stila smudgepot.
Celine says
Urban Decay definitely works well for the waterline. As great as the Stila Smudgepots are, they don’t work well for the waterline though.
.-= Celine’s last blog post… maravi: My recycle bin is full again and I have a few boxes to put out. Sigh, guess I’ll wait till they come to empty it. =-.

You tried CoverGirl Outlast? That’s another option I’m considering.

Best: Discovering smashbox cosmetics. Love their products.
Worst: Discovering just how aged my skin really is! 🙁 I went to get my haircut over the weekend and my hairdresser has the worst lighting in the world. My left side was to a large window that lets the natural light through & not in a flattering way. In addition she has florescent lighting. My face looked like it was being pulled down, you could see several scars and I’m starting to get turkey neck. I wanted to cry. I looked like an old haggarded lady and this is coming from someone who gets comliments that I look younger than my age. Arggg….
veronica says
Ugh, why do hair salons have the WORST lighting!? Whenever I’m at my salon, I always look another 5 years older.

Best? I got a new moisturizing cream. La Roche Posay Hydraphase. Getting ready to bear another six (ish) months of crappy weather. Ugh.
Worst? I can’t seem to do anything with my hair. Have resorted to teasing the eff out of it and then pulling it into a messy bun. Blah.
Hey Karen, do you purchase your graphics (such as the one above) or do you design them yourself?
Karen says
Hi Lana,
Regarding my graphics, I do both. Some I draw from scratch. Some of them, like the one on this post, I buy from sites like istockphoto.com and then enhance with text and other effects in Photoshop.
Hope you’re having a good weekend. Happy holidays!

Best: wearing my hair pin straight underneath my graduation cap. My hair was totally cooperating!!!
Worst: deciding to cover my entire head of highlights with a darker do’. Two days after my dye job all the highlights are showing through… Except my hair color is NOT pretty… It’s ashy and lacking major shine! Any color enforcement recommendations ladies?

BEST: being able to find an affordable but effective mascara for my lashes in Covergirl VolumeExact
WORST: when I wore black eyeshadow that didn’t look very beautiful on my eyes for our company’s Twilight themed xmas party. my hubby and i were pressed for time and when i was supposed to just apply a little black shadow on my lids, it went too far and i ended up having eyes that look like that of the model in MAC’s style black campaign. it doesn’t complement my asian eyes and not so high-bridged nose…

BEST- Discovering a great navy and gold smokey eye.
WORST- Darn whiteheads that won’t go away!

Best–I went a WHOLE week without buying ANYTHING beauty related….mainly because its the week before Christmas…hubster went shopping today and he asked for my BI card….maybe something in a glossy black & white bag will be under the tree this week!
Worst–HAT HAIR & STATIC….now that the weather has turned frigid, my hair is NOT cooperating. A salon appointment is in the near future (Wednesday afternoon)…..
So sad to hear about Brittany Murphy……my favorite scene in Clueless is “Rollin’ with the Homies…”
Sonia says
Best: It’s a tie between the Smashbox sample sale I went to on Friday (I scored a ton of products at super cheap prices) and the fact that after years of using Proactiv and other acne products, it took a little over one week for Clinique’s 3-step system to dramatically improve my skin.
Worst: The realization that my recessionista eyebrows are not nearly as good as my professionally-threaded eyebrows. I have to start skimping somewhere else.
Kay says
A tip for the bangs problem: Always let them air-dry. I’ve had bangs for years, and when I decide to mess around with flat-irons or blow-dryers they always end up feeling unnatural.
Jen says
Best: I bought an awesome hair curler the other day. My hair NEVER holds a curl, but this curler is beyond awesome. Held up for two days, no product in my hair whatsoever. I think I’m in love.
Worst: Stayed up all night on Friday (why did I think that was a good idea?), then I had to work for 12 hours on Saturday. I was rockin’ the zombie look. O___O Ended up staying awake for 34 hours.
Jen says
I NEED to know what curler that is. My hair does NOT hold!!!

Where’s “Sundays with Tabs”–always my fave post of the week. Love that cat! (And I’m a dog person!)
WORST: One stye and 6 zits (all on the same side of my face!) in 4 days–previously have had a total of 4 zits in the last ten years. Nothing like blooming for Christmas.
BEST: BOGOF ColorStay Lip something .
FYI- I love the Maybelline eyebrow pencils. It’s a thin limey green pencil. Lots of colors. Think it’s called Define a Brow. I apply, then comb with an old CoverGirl Volume Exact mascara wand. Very long lasting. Actually, may have heard of here.
Karen–I am originally a Marinite. Grew up in Novato (is that where you are now?) and lived as an adult in Kentfield and Larkspur. Never thought I could leave, but I now live in San Ramon in the East Bay–beats Marin by a mile. LOVE IT!!!! Do you have a pet sitter lined up for Tabs? I used to be a pet sitter so I could give you a few tips.

Best- Finally getting the hang of a work appropriate smokey eye. Whenever I tried before it was always going out high drama kinda thing.
Worst – Windblown cheeks as I spent hours trying to clear my car buried under almost two feet of snow – more than we usually get all year! Now I have a nice, clear car in the middle of a snowed in lot. Grrr. At least it won’t ice over. My cheeks are raw and sensitive.
Stephie says
Best: getting around to waxing my upperlip ::shivers:: 😛 AND rocking my NARS Orgasm nailpolish. I really like it for a “natural nails” kind of look. It’s so much like the blush it’s insane. From the peach pinkiness to the very fine gold dust of shimmer I swear I can paint my cheeks with this stuff.
Worst: Having to open at work the past two days [damn! holiday extended hours] and going to work with funky I just woke up make up 😛
.-= Stephie’s last blog post… It’s Raining =-.

Best: Getting my MAC pigments in the mail from the Holiday 2009 collection. I really like the colors, but have to get used to the fall out and application. Rushmetal looks really nice with Grain and Shroom!
Worst: I wore MAC Trax on my lid and Blackberry in my crease – hubby said it looked like someone punched me in the eye. Blackberry went back to the MAC store and I put away Trax (got it in a swap).
Have a great evening!

best- i was on temptalia.com and i was looking at the new Givenchy spring 2010 collection and it has LIP MARKERS!!!! you KNOW i’m picking some of them up.
worst- i need an angled liner brush but i’m saving and instead of getting the sephora or ecotools ones im hanging out for the MAC 266. unfortunately until then i have no liner brush.

oh add this to the best- decided to put dark nails on hold and instead wearing Chanel’s Ballerina. best. nailpolish colour. ever.

Best:
Found a good-SOUNDING perfume on the anthropologie website, satu eau de parfum. It was marked down to $9.50 from $48!! It hasn’t come in the mail yet, but there were only positive reviews on the site. It was so cheap that my hopes aren’t too high, so hopefully I’ll be impressed.
Worst:
Bought several pots of lip balms, but didn’t need to – turns out my Burt’s Bees does the job better than rosebud salve or on10.

BEST — finally getting the hang of rinsing my hair at our new bathroom. The water composition is kinda different from our old place and for a while my hair was feeling the effects of it — kinda blah and limp.
WORST — I badly need to have my eyebrows done (or do them myself) — they are out of control and no amount of wax/gel/pencil/powder will tame them!!!
Megan says
I had the same problem w/ my bangs a while ago! I put an elastic head band on them while I slept. It keeps them in place better 🙂
j.j. says
Best – My gel liner came from Bobbi Brown (online). The stores just don’t seem to carry my shade anymore. The Indigo Ink blue really makes my green eyes pop.
Worst – Getting used to the new (freshly opened) pot of said eyeliner. Getting blue eyeliner smudged everywhere these past couple of days. No wonder the sales person at Nordstrom (different counter) offered to touch up my eye make-up – it was no longer where I put it this morning. When it’s the last of the container and a little on the dry side, it needs to be pushed on the brush a little more. Not so much fresh.

I have 2 best beauty experiences this week: 1) Using a skunk brush to apply my foundation gives me an even better coverage (it was actually more of a OMG moment), 2) My first shu uemura false lashes. I love me some falsies!
My worst: I’m with you on the bangs. My bangs have been in cowlick country all week this week. 🙁

Best: Found an old compact of Bath and Body Works brightener that a friend gave me months ago. I never tried it because it was, well… Bath and Body Works makeup. But it goes on beautifully and adds a really nice glow to my face after I put on my powder. Score!
Worst: Fell asleep in front of the TV last night and slugged off to bed after, without washing my face. Looked like a hagard mess this morning (you know, more than usual).

Keren,
Regarding your worst experience… been there! but the difference is that before I gave up on my bangs (which I loooooovvveee) I went back to the salon and put only my bangs through the “brazilian strighting process” are you familiar with it? I’m not from the States so that name may be different.
If you love your bangs don’t give up!!

Best: I decided to use the Urban Decay Foreshadow palette for stage makeup for a Nutcracker performance this week. It contains Midnight Cowboy, which looks great except for the copious amounts of glitter that fall under my eyes within minutes. I used to use tape to get the glitter off, I discovered that makeup removing wipes also does the job! In addition, the eyeshadow looks really pretty once the glitter is gone.
Another best: I got a sample of the Clinique Acne care line (soap, toner, lotion) and it’s been doing wonders for my skin. I’m picking up the full size this week!
Worst: Clumsily struggling with bright red lipstick for the Nutcracker show mentioned above. I never use lipstick so I”m very clumsy when it comes to actually applying it. I used lip liner and applied the lipstick carefully, but still it was a mess! I should have used a lip brush but I don’t own one. Not to mention I kept getting it on my teeth and it got all over my hands when I put my hand over my mouth on stage. That’s why I stick with gloss or good old Burt’s Bees chapstick.

Best: Sephora finally had the Korres Jasmine Lip Butter & Body Butter Duo in stock 🙂 I got 1 for me and 2 for gifts. I also found OPI Go On Green at Winner’s (like TJ Maxx or Ross) for $5.99 🙂
Worst: I got the Maybelline Eye Studio Quad and MIneral Duo at Walmart. Both have serious fall out issues! At least the pigmentation isn’t too bad.
Re: Side Swept Fringe
Apply a bit of volumizing styling product at the roots. (I use Redken Guts) Then use a not too big round brush (roughly 1″ diameter) and a blow dryer, slowly pull the round brush in the direction you want your bangs. (Don’t hold the dryer too long on the ends, otherwise it will curve too much and look funny.) Then lightly use a silicone based product to tame the ends in your desired direction. (I use Victoria’s Secret Smoothing Shine Serum) Since your hair is wavy, a flat iron would be working against the way your hair naturally follows. Plus I find it makes my hair look too flat and lacking volume. Btw, I have a similar side swept fringe, and this is what I do to style my fringe. HTH 🙂

Best – Finally being able to blowdry my hair in less than 5 minutes.
Worst – My skin is still FREAKING OUT. But, I picked up a night cream that used to work really well today, so maybe next week my Best will finally be that my skin has calmed down!
Also, thats why I finally decided to grow my bangs out. That and my hair person essentially told me thats what I was doing… But the other reason was how high maintenance they are!
