Class of ’93, yo!
Hey, gals. I was just thinking about high school…
Sometimes it seems like such a long time ago. They were days filled with talk of Z. Cavaricci pants, the Humpty Dance and OG 90210. 🙂
It was this email from Alicia that prompted my trip down memory lane:
“I was just curious as to what your makeup routine was like in your high school days. I’ve seen pictures of some very stylish people now who looked like train wrecks in High School. Yikes!” – Alicia
What’s up, Alicia?
Seeing how high school was over 15 years ago for me, I’m a little foggy on the details, LOL!
Mugging with my friend Shaun
But I do remember bits and pieces here and there, like how I wore Revlon Cherries in the Snow lipstick almost every day as a sophomore and loved Cornsilk Pressed Powder and Coty Loose Powders in my senior year.
With my BFF Jen
Isn’t it weird to see yourself in old pictures? Like, you still remember those days, but they seem so far away?
Forgive my non-tweezed eyebrows. In my defense, it was the early ’90s. 🙂 I guess we hadn’t discovered tweezing or waxing yet.
Homegirls, do you remember your high school makeup routine or favorite products? Were you stylish back in the day, or did you blossom in your later years?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Cornsilk pressed powder — yes! LOL, I remember that. I had this Aziza eyeshadow quad (whatever happened to that brand??) that was greys and pinks that I thought was so hot. I also had a think for dark, totally matte lipsticks. Paired with big bangs and ungroomed eyebrows — yikes!

I remember cornsilk and revlon. Lots and lots of revlon. LOL. I wore a lot less makeup. I was big on lip gloss and lipstick, though.

Just a couple swipes of Maybeline eyeshadow and some mascara. I miss my perfect skin from high school. My older years led to crazy acne, wrinkles, and more freckles. *sigh*

Ha ha ha ha, seeing as I graduated in 2007, my make-up routine hasn’t changed all that much. I was a late bloomer in terms of wearing the right amount of make-up and I’m still changing my fashion style. I wore a lot of eyeliner. I don’t wear as much today.

KAREN!! Thanks for sharing those old pictures of you. It’s so funny to compare those to your sexaaay FOTD shots with your hair blowing in the fan’s air 😛
Hm. HS was like 3 years ago. Haha. And I honestly didn’t wear any makeup until about junior year. I wore a Revlon lustrous lipgloss and some Almay black eyeliner. When that ran out I used a black sephora liner and that was it!
Now it’s like the whole 9 yards of makeup!!

OMG – I’m having a high school dance themed bday party the end of this month!
I miss my skin from my youth – I’d slap some powder on my face – black eyeliner(l’oreal or Lancome) on my top lash line – mascara and RED lipstick and call it a day hahaha. I was lucky enough to have a mom that agreed to buy me red lipsticks from Lancome and Dior! I use to spend a good amount of time and hairspray on my hair/bangs freshman and sophmore year. I discovered that my hair looked good flat when I discovered the power of sleeping in my junior/senior year hahaha
HAHAHA – AZIZA was the bomb btw!!!

I was class of ’92 also and it’s scary to see girls walking down the street in outfits I’d wear in the 10th grade!

since high school wasn’t that long ago for me(graduated ’08) its all still very fresh in my mind!
generally for normal school days i just put on the basics: powder foundation, mascara, lipbalm.
some days i tried to be stylish, but because i did tech crew for the drama club i was always tired and just didn’t feel like putting in an effort.

OMG! Don’t you just lurve the Nineties? It’s hilarious because I just posted my pictures from ’94 to ’96 on my blog, too. Bwahahaa!
I remember my makeup routine in the ’90s being a full-face one, which always resulted in so many mistakes: crease contouring, “translucent” loose powder that made me pale as a geisha, thick eyebrow pencil, smoky eyes WITH red lips, “nude” lipstick that turned orange… *shudder* No wonder my friends always teased me about being a Makeup Girl.
All that effort did pay off, though, as far as my makeup skills were concerned. I did learn how to tweeze my brows, “wing out” my eyeliner, and pick the best colors for my skin tone. Red lipstick became my friend, along with the perfect nude pencil (which back then was Wet’n’Wild #666, aka “Brandywine”) and a little mascara. Nothing wrong with all of that! 🙂

When I first started wearing makeup in Grade 8, I wore mud brown lipstick. The browner and darker the better. Then in Grade 9-10 I wore the Mod look, where I would line my eyes thickly with this cheap charcoal gray liner and I would mix concealer with my MAC Mocha lipstick because it wasn’t pale enough in the tube. Finally in Grades 11 and 12, I wore MAC Juxt and Vex eyeshadow, Studio Fix NC30 powder and MAC Verve lipstick. Oh and I remember wearing colourful nailpolish from every colour in the spectrum and I would change it almost everyday. It was either Wet n Wild, Hard Candy or Urban Decay polishes.

Actually my current routine is not that different from what I had in high school. Back then I have 7:30pm class, I will just wake up at 7:10pm, shower and bike to school with my hair wet (as a matter of fact, I never owned a blow drier…my hair is going to dry eventfully, so I see no point doing the extra step.)
Now if I have a few more minutes, I will rub some sunscreen on my face (and stuff something in my mouse to stop my stomach making funny noises.) Anyway, sleep is golden for me so my routine is kept minimal.

Awww, High School. It was four years ago, but it feels like longer. I hardly wore makeup, though I loved to pull out all the stops for the dances! I’ve since come to appreciate the 10 minutes of colors in pretty tubes and pots- the highlight of my mornings.

I went to HS in the late 80s and had crazy curly hair so I didn’t have to use massive amounts of hairspray like my friends. But a whiff of hairspray always makes me think of HS! LOL. We were into very frosty lips — everyone had a tube of Revlon’s Frosted Brownie or Pink Ice. Royal blue eyeliner (and not the good way we wear colors now). We hadn’t found tweezers yet either. I also remember a lot of bad, heavy full-face foundation on many girls — whether they were trying to cover up acne or not. Going to college where less makeup was the norm was when we started looking good!
Tavia says
You brought me some special memories about High School. In that time I didn’t use any makeup. I remember that my colleagues were using foundation, mascara, eyeshadows and lipstick but I wasn’t even wearing lipgloss. I start using mascara and some eyeshadows only in the latest months of High School. Anyway since I was not from US, here was not so good to be seen by teachers with makeup on. Anyway I’m happy that I’ve postpone the makeup for university and the foundation and concelears only after I was 25, cause you can really see the difference. Girls that have been using foundation since high school they don’t look so good now. I mean for what use it when you are 16 and your skin is young.

Hmm, I almost never wore make up, and if I did, I would just wear black mascara or some nude eyeshadow and a bit of pink gloss on the lips (remember that some L’oreal Color Riche in Frosted Pink was my fav). But I had tons of lip glosses (funny how now, in my 20’s I barely have any).
I remember how my mom always used to comment how pale and ghastly I look and how much better would I look with additional make up. I always though that I looked like a child and make up didn’t suit me. On the good days and special occasions I would wear a bit or purple or black khol in the corners of my eyes…
Meghan says
I remember bits and pieces:
1. A very brief dark dark lipstick phases. My friends and I would put on this frosty copper from wet n wild and then over that we would put black lipstick Yeesh!
2. Silver eyeliner + purple mascara
3. In high school I mostly remember wearing lots of shimmer and glitter.

Karen says
Hi Emma,
I like Bobbi Brown’s approach to makeup when it comes to teenage/high school makeup. Less is more. When you’re young you honestly don’t need much for the everyday look. If your skin is in good shape I’d go with something like MAC Blot or blotting papers to cut down shine; if you have some trubs then concealer over the parts you need it and then a tinted loose or pressed powder. Get your brows groomed professionally (or by a friend or an older relative who knows what she’s doing) and then keep them up yourself to save money. Throw in mascara, some gloss, maybe some blush if you’re into it (to try: MAC Blushbaby, Peaches or Pinch o’ Peach). Also optional: subtle pencil eyeliner smudged along the upper and lower lash lines (the Cargo Plant Love pencils are awesome). Hit me up if you have any more questions!

I graduated 1999 and as I recall it was: Wash and Go.
It wasn’t until a dance (ersh!) six months into my grade 12 year, that I used make up for the first time: Pink Chiffon eye shadow by Covergirl, some blush and mascara, of course.
But I think that was about it. Surprisingly, for someone who’d never really worn make up before, I think I did pretty well!

I am envious that you can remember the name of your shadow color!

Wow…so many commenters have only been out of HS for 2 years! Yikes, you can take 2 plus 20 for me. 😉 The only things I remember: an Estee Lauder foundation, that I decidedly did not need at the time, black l’oreal eyeliner, max factor mascara, a purple eyeshadow duo from Lancome and carmex. How I loved those purples…I have spent years looking for the same shades…too no avail.
Karen says
Hi Amy,
I think it’s so cool that gals from all age groups pop by the blog!
Did you have big hair back in the day, too?

My junior year, I was sooo into Hard Candy. It was impossible to get where I lived, and I clearly remember going on a trip to NYC and making a special stop at Sephora to load up on HC goods.
I was OBSESSED with the Glitter Eye Liner in black (I think it was called Hyper?), flecked with chunky silver glitter — I would rim my eyes in that for school until it looked like they were in a pool of glittery ink.
I also loved this eye shadow quartet — I think it was called Purple Haze? — that had strips of glittery purple, silver, black and creamy-white shadow. I would pile that purple glitter shadow on my eyes and go to school looking like I was ready to host 120 Minutes, which was still on MTV at the time!
Urban Decay also came out my junior year, and I remember buying tons of their shadows and lipglosses.
As heavy-handed as I was with it, I miss that Hard Candy quartet:(

Oh boy, I like to pretend high school never existed for me but sadly, pictures prove it happened! Class of ’90 here!
Basically I was train wreck and had absolutely ZERO style. I wore men’s Levi’s 501’s every day with whatever concert t-shirt was clean and high tops. I frequently wore my black leather motorcycle jacket or a jean jacket with white or black hoodie sweatshirt under it. Typical rocker chick wear.
As far as makeup, it was super simple back then. I wore heavy black Wet n Wild eyeliner with some shade of horrible blue/pink/lavender eyeshadow and mascara. I didn’t wear blush or any lip products then.
Don’t EVEN get me started on the hair! Got a perm when I was 16 then I poofed up my bangs so I had huge hair sprayed (yes Aqua Net) rocker hair. My goal was to have Bret Michael’s hair, though I hated his music and him, LOL!
It always amazes me when I look back even 4 or 5 years ago because my style has changed so much. I am WAY more aware of what looks good on me now for hair, makeup and clothing and I just keep getting better I think!

I wore no makeup in high school and wasn’t conscious of what i looked like. It was only when I started getting compliments on my looks that I actually became self-conscious, and oddly enough, dissatisfied. I was a painter and wore all black, and didn’t get into makeup until my late, late twenties. And I graduated high school in ’93. 🙂
Karen says

Class of ’05, I didn’t really wear makeup. I was the wash & go, jeans and a t-shirt girl. Always had sports after school so makeup would have been a mess.
For dances or going out I would put on a light shimmer eyeshadow from clinique, it had silver, pale pink, baby blue and a gorgeous tan color; my mom bought it for me. the usual was the pink and some dark brown mascara (I have light hair). I do remember in the early days of highschool there was some silver eyeliner and black mascara that we got for halloween (my bff and i) and we loved it and wore it for a few months… Most of highschool consisted of some sort of frosty shimmery pale eyeshadow and mascara. 🙂

Oh jeez…high school. The fashions are what stand out for my so much more than the make-up of the time period, but I did dig deep into my brain to remember a few items from my routine. During the grunge phase, when dark lips were my staple, I wore Lancome Garnet lip pencil everyday. Filled in my entire lip with that thing…talk about drying. Then when that phase was gone, I got into using Cherry Chapstick with Wet n’ Wild lip pencil in #666 or #711. That lip combo even carried me into my first year of college. I can’t seem to remember if I wore eyeshadow or not but I did wear black eyeliner all the time. It was Revlon’s Soft Khol liner in Soft Black..it was my staple. But one thing I do know is that I did not pluck my eyebrows either. And they were LARGE. It was my college freshman roommate who finally decided to sit down & help me tame them. Something about the 90’s & bushy eyebrows was cool I guess. Blame it on Kathy Ireland….
Beth says
Wow, this is fun! ’87 for me. Let’s see, I had a very long routine and wore lots of makeup, even though my skin was perfect (no zits until college). I wore Clinique regular square bottle foundation and their loose powder #2 and their Advanced Concealer on my dark undereye circles that I was paranoid about. They had a brown eyeshadow duo I LOVED but can’t remember the name – was it Fawn? Wore it for years. Did highlighter, crease and the bottom part religiously daily. I was a fan of navy or blue liner and navy or blue mascara paired with the brown shadow and wore a thick line on top and bottom AND tightlined the inner rim on the bottom as well! Always wore lipstick, went through a 2 year phase of a pale pink frosty L’Oreal and a pale nude frosty L’Oreal. I noticed the other day at Target that they STILL carry the colors, though I can’t remember the names for the life of me. MAUVED! That’s one of them! How can yall always remember the names? (can you tell I’m from the South?) As far as eyebrows, big eyebrows were IN. Since I don’t have much going on in the eyebrow department, I would fill them in with a brown eyebrow pencil, then use a mascara wand to fluff mine UPWARD to make them as thick as possible. Think Brooke Shields back in the 80’s. I meticulously applied the frostiest pink blush to my cheeks, not having any idea how ridiculous that looked. The frostier pink, the better. Same for my nails.
So imagine, thick heavy matte face, thick eyebrows, heavy duty eyeshadow, electric blue liner and lashes, frosty pink cheeks/lips/nails.
Fun times!
Karen says
Hi Beth,
GIRL, that was the Fawn Satin duo. I wore that 24/7 circa 1995!

Hi Karen!
We weren’t really allowed to wear makeup at school and were told to remove it if it was obvious so I perfected the natural look from an early age! The main thing I remember is I used to love those flavoured bonne bell lipbalms, especially the choclatey and vanilla ones, the chocolatey ones were a very neutral colour and I loved the smell and taste of them! You can’t get them here in the UK anymore unfortunatly as I am sure I would still have to have a couple! Even in my early teens I had penchant for high end cosmetics though, I used quite a bit of Estee Lauder back in the day ‘cos my Mum uses a lot of of that brand so I thought I was being all grown up getting my own expensive make-up! Unfortunatly for me it led to a very expensive obsession with Chanel Make-up and nail polishes!

Um, it’s called the “I don’t wear makeup” routine that’s utterly simple: I only used vaseline straight out from the tube. But I remember to overdo my brows in grade 12, which left it very very thin. Luckily, my brows did grow back. It’s a bit scary to look back at high school, I was so bookish back then.

Hi Karen, in high school I caked on foundation. I had super bad acne and tried to hide it. I always wore a full face of makeup but remember someone once remarking, “you wear makeup”, apparently I’ve always been on the natural side of it and just wore enough to hide the flaws and accentuate the good. 11 years later I absolutely hate wearing foundation and really only do a couple times a year. My husband would rather see the natural me too so I wear makeup sparingly and in neutral colors of course.
Karen says
Hi Katrina,

Oh my goodness, I remember my high school years. 9th grade was just avon glossy wine lipgloss, 10th grade I got to add in eyeliner and 11th grade and beyond, it was a full face. My mom said she let me because I knew how NOT to look like a clown. I was definitely all over the wet n wild cosmetics. I think the lipstick that I used to wear was 746 or soemthing like that. I also dabbled with covergirl. I think I was more stylish then. I was concerned more with my clothes choices then than I am now. I definitely would like to get backi into clothes. And the fashion… let’s just say it was inappropriate at best. Things are much better now. Toned down & natural. And my hair? All one shade of black, left wavy.

I was a mess in high school.
I had terrible acne that I tried to cover up with Cover Girl foundation. Of course, that didn’t work and my mom was not much of a make-up person so I was shiny, red an bumpy all the time.
I had not figured out that my hair was naturally wavy so I was trying to blow-dry it and didn’t use a flat iron which = major puffiness.
Ew.
Luckily, not many pics exist of me outside of my band uniform (yes, I was and still am a proud band geek!) so there is minimal evidence of my lack of fashion sense.
Thank God.

Karen, it’s so timely that you posted this because I put up some old pics from high school on my FB profile a couple weeks ago. Class of ’94! I think my look changed from year to year, since I was totally natural my junior year and then I dyed my hair my senior year and changed up my makeup routine a little. Surprisingly, my look wasn’t that bad back then, it was a few years after high school that I looked like a total wreck. I posted some of those pics too!
I loved makeup back then as much as I do now, and I even started wearing it in the 7th grade! Behind my mom’s back of course. My high school makeup routine if I remember correctly was Cover Girl foundation and pressed powder, Revlon Sandstone lipstick (I don’t think they make it anymore), some peachy Maybeline blush (don’t remember the shade), a Maybeline duo eyeshadow with a cream shade (all over) and a light brown shade for the crease, eyelash curler, brown eyeliner, and two or three coats of Maybelline Great Lash mascara. I also had a Clinique eyeshadow quartet of different shades of frosty browns (a hand-me-down from an older cousin) that I would bust out for special occasions. 🙂

I started wearing makeup in middle school (blue eyeshadow, no less), but I was pretty much a nerd and stopped wearing it b the time I got to high school. For special occasions I would wear mascara and that was about it. My skin was horrible then – it didn’t clear up until quite a bit later. In college I started wearing maekup every day. LOL! Seriously, those three are like the holy trinity of fragrances of the early 90s.
I’m also guilty of rocking NAVY by Coty. Do you know that one? Once in awhile I’ll see it at the drugstore and be very tempted to buy a bottle.
Solé says
Yeah, I remember Navy. It was like the classy drugstore perfume. 🙂 I can’t believe they still make it!

I was not allowed to use makeup or tampons. I’m still trying to catch up on lost years.

LOL. I love this post! =)
I didn’t really wear makeup in high school. I started using BE foundation like… my Junior year or so with a tad of blush? And I wore Rimmel pressed powder as concealer for my undereyes. No lipstick, not much lipgloss either, just chapstick and no eye makeup. Actually, I expressly remember the two times I tried my mom’s Clinique GWP eyeshadows and ended up with styes both times. I didn’t try wearing eyeshadow again until 4 years later!!! Last winter, actually lol and I’m now going into my 4th year of college.
And lol, I think everyone’s brows were a mess back then! I didn’t start shaping mine ’till less than a year ago and it made SUCH A HUGE DIFFERENCE. I didn’t really *have* brows before that… just … fuzz, very sparse disseminated fuzz from the middle of my lid to the middle of my forehead with a slight concentration where an eyebrow should be lol.

Hi Catherine,
Aren’t shaped brows a whole new world? I look at old pics and go WHOA when I see my fuzzy brows, LOL!

Oh my, high school! I graduated in 1998. Some of the lipsticks I wore and can remember are MAC Chelsea, Chintz, Photo, Paramount or Fluid. I liked those browns and darkness reigned. I never wore pink lipstick, always something dark. I started tweezing my brows around grade 10, thank goodness my cousins got me doing that early 😉 I wore whatever drug store foundation I could find that was close enough to my skin. Once I got a job though, I started using MAC Studio Fix. I wore dark brown or black eyeliner, with a bit of mascara that was barely visible. My ‘peak’ was probably at one of the high school fashion shows when I wore MAC Haze (still have it!), Vex and Tilt eyeshadows, along with this holographic rainbow dress I made. Lol! I look back now and realized it was hilarious.
Besides that, I was the ‘Nailpolish Queen’. Some of friends even wanted me to get my locker plate with that on it, but I chose ‘Cosmic Girl’ due to the previously mentioned dress. At our reunion last year, some of them remembered my nickname and asked if I still had my collection. With quite a few disposals and new additions, but of course I still had it, just with much better quality nailpolish =).
