The new Lancome Le Curler, $23, available June 2012
Well…sometimes I use my lash curler before and after applying mascara.
I know! I’m bad. 🙂 It’s a big no-no among many makeup artists who say that curling lashes coated with mascara leads to broken lashes.
I don’t do it all the time. Only when my lashes straighten out right after away I finish applying my mascara, and I’m always very careful to exert just the slightest pressure on the curler before ever-so-gently easing my lashes out of them so they don’t stick to the pads and break off.
Yup, I’m a rule breaker, but you know what they say about rules (they’re meant to be broken).
Oh, and sometimes I like to wear my darkest, moodiest lipsticks in the middle of spring and summer. So what if it’s 90 degrees out? If the mood to wear an opaque matte plum to the pool strikes in the middle of August, I don’t even hesitate.
Why not, right? It’s fun to mix things up.
How about you? What makeup “rules” do you like to break?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Completely agree w/ the darker lipstick part! I live in FL so I have no seasonally defined makeup and I wear what I want when I want.
Jennifer says
I do the reverse of the dark lipstick: wearing bright and sunny corals, even when it’s cold and rainy out. Corals really flatter my skintone, so why not wear them year round?
Adrienne says
I like bright colors when the weather is crummy, makes me feel happier and brightens up my world a bit! Sometimes I don’t even do it on purposes, I just find myself reaching for bright coral lipstick when it’s rainy 🙂
Chelsea says
I completely agree! Coral looks great on me, I don’t care if it’s snowing outside or sunny.
Molly says
I do the same thing, use an eyelash curler before and after using mascara… But I thought it was a no-no because of possible breakage and that the lashes might stick to the pad and get pulled out…?
I wipe or wash off my curler either before or after I use it, so it sticks less.
I used to wear nail and lip colors opposite the seasons, dark in summer, lighter in the winter….for me it started after Vamp was the hot nail color. (Yep, way back, Lol.)
I don’t match my nail and toe polish.
Sometimes I add a little water to my mascara or I wash the wand completely, if I’m getting down to the end of a tube and the wand seems gunky…
I probably shouldn’t type that last one since it’s kind of a big no-no.
Summer says
Haha, I break the same rule too! Except I’ve started doing it all the time. No broken lashes yet, knock on wood.
I also wear lilac-pink lipstick all year round. Whenever the mood strikes me, I whip one out and wear it and I never care if it’s dead of winter or spring. I excuse this rule by calling it my signature lipstick!
Jen says
Ha, I’m kind of the opposite: I usually forget to curl my lashes. I haven’t changed (or cleaned it, for that matter) the pad on my eyelash curler since I got it, like 2 or 3 years ago. Gross.
Stèphanie says
I never match my nails and toenails.. and sometimes I don’t match both of my hands, haha. I just like wearing many beautiful colors at the same time.
I use my facial primer as a eyeshadowbase.
I still wear bright colors during the fall of winter. I’m just in love with bright colors.
Miss Delirium says
he he I break that rule always :p Never had a problem with broken lashes tho, so maybe thats why I continue doing it…:P if I curl them before applying mascara, i dont get any effect and its just a waste of time. Curling them after mascara at least give me a slight “curl” not much tho. its a reason why i always wear false lashes 😉
Helz Nguyen says
Well I dont break that many beauty rules, since my makeup routine is pretty plain and boring, gahh.. but if I feel a bit “nawty” lol 🙂 I might curled my lashes again (and again) after I already applied mascara. I have stiffy and stubborn lashes, that dont curl very well or all to the same directions, so curling them is never an easy task
Neela says
I always curl before and after because my lashes are too long and get too heavy from mascara and drop. I always clean the pad before and after. I’ve never experienced broken lashes from it.
bin du says
1. I don’t match my toes/nail polish
2. I don’t spot clean my brushes after every use (i’m lazy haha)
3. I don’t set my brows with a gel
Sunny @ Mostly Sunny says
Ooo I curl my lashes BEFORE I prime my eyes, does that count as breaking the rules? I don’t like to make a mess on my curler, and I’m always a bit skeptical about the curler smearing the eyeshadows I just put on. It works well for me 😉

Makeup Rules I’ve Broken, According to Magazines and Pro’s.
1) Blue eyeshadow all over the lid. I tend to mix blue eyeshadows, and I like to do a blue smokey eye, or a mystical looking eye with iridescent blues. Some people say you shouldn’t do blue all over the lid, I guess because of Mimi from the Drew Carey Show (anyone remember her bright blue eyeshadow that was all over her lid and up to her brows?), but I think if it’s carefully done and blended, and using many different kinds of blues, it’s ok. I also don’t use any kind of blue up to my brow bone or brows (too afraid of the Mimi look).
2) I also don’t match my toes and my nails. I don’t paint my fingernails because a) I’m a nail biter (trying to stop), and b) I do a lot of handwashing at both places of work, so a manicure wouldn’t last. I keep my toes painted all the time, even in the winter, because of brittle toenails from distance running.
3) For hair color, I go brighter in the winter (usually a golden red), and darker in the summer (close to my natural hair color, a chocolate cherry). I go darker in the summer because of being out in the sun – the Carrot Top look is not a good look on someone who does not naturally have hair that red (my natural color as a kid was a chestnut brown red).
KPrice says
I break all sorts of rules that I’m suppose to follow for my age. My hair is still it’s natural dark color and past my shoulders. I don’t wear glitter eyeshadow, but I don’t ever just wear matte and will line and put mascara on both upper and lower lids. I feel my best this way and that’s what is most important.
Chris25 says
I also curl my lashes after applying mascara. It’s never been a problem. I don’t brush my hair every day, and I almost never use highlighter in the inner corner of my eyes.
Joyce says
I don’t throw away mascaras within 3 months of opening. I throw them away when they dry up. I threw my Dior Iconic mascara after 4 months of opening and I never had a bad reaction from it or from using any mascara for more than 3 months.
Taffy says
I’ve always been told that matching your lipstick and/or your nail polish to match your outfit was a huge non-no but anytime I do it I get compliments! What’s the big faux pas about a red lipstick and a red shirt anyways?
Dominique says
– I never wear foundation
– I don’t always use a primer on the eyelids
– I never use a base coat
– I love pink blushes but I should use coral/pink ones
Adrienne says
There are rules?? Whoops! 😛
I wear any color whenever I damn please 🙂
Everyone should do what looks good on then and makes THEM happy, rules are meant to be broken!
…Except the one about not applying your bronzer as if it was foundation. I see this every spring/summer… Ugh, I know I’m relatively close to the Jersey Shore… But girls, oompa loompa is never in style! If you wanna be orange, at least fade the color down your jaw instead of leaving a harsh line? Or get a faux tan or spray tan?
Charmaine says
ITA with Adrienne, ‘cept I haven’t really thought about the bronzer thing, but I can see that.
{I’m 43 and don’t give a **** about these “rules”. Seems to me the people who decide what’s ok or not are people who get all up in arms if anyone tries to stifle their creativity (ever see pix of the models in fashion shows? Sheesh!), so I say poo on them! (But not literally, that would be weird and gross).}
*ahem*
I don’t throw out mascara after 3 months.
I, too, refuse to stick to matte neutrals, but I’m lucky to have very few lines, no wrinkles, and my eyelids aren’t crepey or droopy, so nowhere for shimmer to settle n crease up.
I don’t color my hair, unless I’m feeling angsty. I have lots of grey hair and I wear it very proudly, or mebbe I just don’t really think about it.
I wear whatever makes me happy whenever, but I also know there’s a time and place for everything.
I guess being from Northern California (Silicon Valley) kinda made me more open and accepting of differences, especially since I’ve always marched to the beat of my own drum.
Wear what makes you feel happy and confident!:-)
Chelsea says
I never base my makeup colors on the weather. Coral or Peach in the snow? Why not?!
I always read that people with fair skin should stick to blue-based reds. I hate them, and they do not suit my complexion! True reds or orange reds are much more flattering on me. That pinkish red color just does not work for me.
I wear what I like, and advise others to do the same! When I worked at a cosmetics counter, I would always have customers asking which lipsticks they should wear… I asked them what colors they like. I don’t care if people say I look good in something, if I don’t like it, I won’t wear it.
KaylaK says
Well not sure if it’s really a makeup rule or not.. but I tend to match my eyeshadow to my outfits! I like to match I can’t help it!! lol
Nina says
My fave rule to break is — I dont always use eyeliner. Dont get me wrong, I love eyeliner but sometimes, the undone, unlined look just really works with my eye shape. Think smudgy eyeshadow and strong brows. 🙂
Kim says
KAREN!!! You’re going to pull your eyelashes out. I swear – I know of at least 2 people who’ve done that. Please break a different rule. 🙂
I actually put mascara on first, then liner. Otherwise, I’m trying to clean up the mascara I’ve gotten on my lids without wiping off my liner, which is nearly impossible for me. 🙂
Elizabeth says
I stopped needing my eyelash curler when I bought LM full blown volume mascara. It actually makes my lashes curly and stays like that all day. How that is even possible is what I want to know! I don’t have naturally curled or even long lashes either.
TwirlyGirly says
I break almost ALL the “rules” that are supposed to apply to women of my age, mostly because I think they’re ridiculous. I just don’t understand why it would be perfectly acceptable to wear black eyeliner, as an example, on the night before my 50th birthday, but once the clock hit midnight would have to throw the liner in the trash, never to be worn again! Makeup “rules” for women “of a certain age” are silly, because makeup is all about expressing yourself and improving your appearance. I think you have to be absolutely honest with yourself about how age is reflected IN YOU as time marches on, and wear the makeup you enjoy, that best reflects your personal style, and looks good – whatever your age.
