Ooh! Brightly colored ombre highlights, for sure. I love the caramel ombre highlights I got a while back, but now I’m tempted to ask my stylist to whip up something like the colorful pink, purple and blue ends that have been showing up on young Hollywood it girls lately (that’s Lauren Conrad’s mane above on the right).
They look so fun and whimsical! But here’s what’s been holding me back: 1) I’m not sure how well they would translate to dark hair, and 2) I don’t want to look like I’m trying too hard to look young (one of my biggest beauty fears).
I think if I were in my teens or early 20s, I’d do it in a heartbeat!
What makeup or beauty trend are you still working up the courage to try?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I was scared to try the sheep placenta cream a few years back. It was supposed to be for smoothing rough skin, like my elbows. Anyway, I tried it and it was okay. Now, I’m scared to try out snail cream from Korea. Elbows and my face are two very different places!
Elaine says
As sad as this soudns, I’m scared to try a center part…. I think it makes my face look lopsided!
Angelic Mariposa Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ says
Go for it Elaine, I’ve been growing out a bob with side bangs, I hadn’t done a side part in years but now I’m rocking it daily!!
terry says
Erm. Just the classic bold red lip?=D
Destinee says
Same here, Im still looking for the perfect red for my skintone.
Ditte Karolussen says
Me too. Feel so self-conscious.
Tiffany C. says
Me also!!!

Ease yourself into it! Play around in Sephora/ULTA/wherever to find a semi-sheer red lipstick goes with your skin tone. This way, you can build up your tolerance for the bright red 🙂
Adrienne says
Getting my eyebrows threaded. Some of my coworkers do it on lunch break, but I’m afraid I’ll come out with huge red puffy eyebrows and have to be in public like that! Plus what if they screw them up!
I’m also afraid of getting my upper lip waxed. I can get the bikini just fine, yet the upper lip scares me, lol
Nina says
id have to say getting ombre hair. i want it. ive talked w/ my stylist about it but it just seems so trendy … 🙂
Leah says
Feather hair extensions. I think they look really cute and know they are removable but I don’t want to fall victim to a fad.
Becky says
Red pants and ombre multi colored hair…….
Chris25 says
I guess I am not crazy about new nail trends. I like regular nail polish, and I don’t really want Minx’d, Konad-ed or any crazy nail art. I think I am the most boring makeup artist/blogger in the world. 😛
Emma RZ says
I’m with you. My biggest hatred is crackle. I don’t like having or seeing chipped polish so why would anyone want to purposely look like they’re wearing it?
Instant Karma says
I don’t get it, either. It almost always looks unintentionally busted, and even when it doesn’t, the look is just too early ’90s for me. If I’m going to embrace 1991, I’d prefer to break out my old Teddy Ruxpin bear or wear a slap bracelet!
Shannon says
sadly, most of them I’ve been too cheap to try. Sigh! I’d totally go with a feather hair extension, if I could. Something I’m scared to try, though… going blonde. My hair is kind of golden blonde-brown (closer to light brown) naturally, and I *think* I’d really like being blonder… but it just scares me for some reason!
Karen, I think that you could TOTALLY rock the mutlicolored ombre highlight look. I’m more partial to fiery-type oranges and reds, though, myself.
Emily says
I totally agree with the blonde hair. Mine sounds similar to yours and I kinda want to go just a little shy of platinum just for fun, but don’t think I could pull it off!
Michelle says
I haven’t tried the matte lipsticks, but I want to try them this Fall. Since I am in my late 30’s, I’m self conscious of anything that settles into lip lines or makes my lips look dry. But I am determined to find a matte lippie that isn’t drying and gives me those “Mad Men” style lips!
Adrienne says
I never wanted to try matte lipstick because I have persistently dy lips which bug me to no end, but on a whim I tried a lipstick from MAC’s limited Posh Paradise collection, and loooove it! Theyre the Mattene lipsticks, they’re really smooth mattes. I never, even thought I’d be able to stand a matte lip, but these are comfortable, long lasting, and I find them less drying than even many regular lipsticks! You use them over a primer to keep gem looking smooth and avoid fine lines. Karen did a post on hem a little while ago if youd like more info. You should check ’em out!
SaraJane says
I know what you mean! I wasn’t so sure about matte lipsticks, either. But – I just tried some of the Kat Von D Foiled Love lipsticks and love, love, love them. They’re matte and stay on forever – even through eating and drinking. I also like that they have just a bit of a sheen to them even while being matte. Go to a Sephora and try them out. There’s a great red in that line (not the Foiled Love ones, but still Kat Von D) called Adora. It’s semi-matte and gorgeous. I always feel like I’m getting ready to walk onto a Mad Men set when I wear it.
Judith says
Those big framed glasses. I had them back when I was in grade 4 and I hated them. Now they’ve come back and I cringe every time I see them. They look great on some people but I don’t know that I would have the courage to rock them, again, of my own choice.
Miss Delirium says
Ooooh I want that ombre hair as well! But until this day i havent dared to try it out… But im considering doing it with some extensions! If it turns out bad, i can just remove them 😀
Lilly says
No fear! I try whatever I want. But my taste is more on the natural/ sensible side, so no ombre highlight for me. How is one supposed to show up for work? Maintenance? No thanks!
Heidi says
I’ll try anything when it comes to makeup (hey, it washes off, what’s the harm?), but I’m a total wimp when it comes to major changes with my hair.
Erin says
Orange! Eyeshadows, blushes, and lippies…I just cannot rock orange.
gio says
I’m pretty adventurous but really dark, vampy lipstick shades scare me.. I have very pale skin so I’m afraid they won’t look good on me..
Adrienne says
I feel you on this one. I’m slightly darker than say, a ghost, lol. The other day my friend was wearing this dark purple lipstick and it looked awesome on her, very different and very cool! I tried it… Reminded me of my childhood BFF’s goth phase 🙁 I think those deep colors are very hard to pull off on us vey light girls. On the plus side, reds look gorgeous because we can work the whole “Snow White” thing 🙂
Amanda says
I’m trying to gain courage to get a pixie/bob hair cut! My hair is in terrible condition and I want to start fresh, I’m just so nervous about having short hair (I feel like it won’t look well with my round face).
marisol says
Red bold lip. I also like the feather extensions but don’t know if I could pull off that look.
Laura Lee Holmes says
Since I have very pale skin, I’ve always been wary of full-body bronzers.
Other than that, the sky’s the limit!
Jamie says
Karen, have you thought about picking up a few clip in color pieces? That way you can try it out without the commitment 🙂 a friend got them from Sally and they look great!
Becca says
Ombre nails. I wanna try this w/ taupes.
Rachael says
Wearing my natural wavy curly hair on days where I do more than laundry and homework.

pompadour !
Aleksis says
I love that look! I recently posted the blue I put in my hair…I am always scared to wear really dark lips, but I just got a beautiful shade today and I will wear it once it gets cold out!!
Christina says
Ooooh! I have been so tempted to get metallic red highlights! Unfortunately, I have to maintain an undergraduate professional look so I am looking into brown-red highlights as a birthday gift in the near future 😀
Brandi Andi says
I love this! I would try it, but like you, I have dark hair. I have done colors in the past, but it always
takes a toll on my hair. Plus, sometimes after the bleaching my hair just won’t take the colored hair dye:( I have always wished my hair was a few shades lighter.
Christina says
I love this! I have them in my hair myself, and I have almost black hair. Mine go from my natural colour, to a plum, to a plummy violet, to a lavender. The transition within the same colour family makes it really nice! I’ve had it for soooooooo long, that me without purple hair is just absurd. If you want to try it, I think you should. I’m in my late twenties, and I get compliments all the time (and no, not from teens!). I will say my hair is permanent, though. The purple fades, but it is forever there (special dye!).
Melissa says
If you are worried about being “too old” (which I say work it anyway!) to try the colored hair, I remind you that Halloween is next month Karen. If you want to try and rock the hair, do it for Halloween! If people can be vampires or cops that look like hookers, you can def get away with the ombre hair! Nobody will look at you funny.
Gotham Polish says
OMG red lipstick. I know, I know… but I just can’t do it! MAC Creme Cup was too bold for me lol
Jaymie says
Dark lipstick, bold red lips and bright lipstick! I always feel like they will draw too much attention to my lips and make me look like I have fish lips 🙁
whitepepper says
You could always do the coloured highlights in a dark colour — a wine-red or purple would look great with your dark hair. A friend of mine in her fifties just got red and blue streaks done and it totally suits her — she has such a fun-loving personality it’s just an extension of her. I have another friend who went from your colour to a whole head of navy blue — it really suits him.
Time for me to roll in my huge glasses and orange lipstick. 🙂
Solangel says
Hot pink lips and shimmery blush. I don’t even want to imagine my face D:
Sarah says
I would love to go with the highlights in my hair, but I have got really dark brown hair, so I don’t think I could carry that off.
I am still plucking up the courage to try gel nails or anything other than regular nail polish. Silly phobia really.
Wendy A. says
bangs and red lipstick
Tiffanie says
I love red lips but until recently I was terrified to try fushia. But I finally got the nerve to buy some last weekend and rocked it three times this week!!
Quinctia says
Holy crap, I kinda want to go do this to my hair–yesterday.
When I was in college, I dyed the bottom of my hair blue, but I only used a semi-permanent, so it washed out pretty quickly. I have really dark brown hair, so we had to bleach it out first. Whether or not something like this works well with dark hair depends on how easily color bleaches out of your hair, because if it does, you can go bright without too much damage.
I haven’t been able to wear red lips more than about twice ever in my life. I honestly think I look horrible in red, and vivid lip colors make me feel clownish.
artemis says
it looks even better on dark hair especially black 😉 i would get some but i don’t wanna damage my hair 😛
Helena says
still working up the courage to rock the blach nails… have already gotten to gunmetal grey…
Timberly Flowers says
I’ve been rocking out colored eyebrows lately, coordinating them with cray-cray eye makeup or with a simple winged liner. It creeps one of my friends out but I love it. I even did an ombre red-white-blue look for Independence Day. =)

Wear my leather shorts -_-
Kim says
I’d say dying my lashes/brows. I’d like to see how much (if at all) it would cut down on my mascara and brow pencil needs. I’ve seen enough bad brow dye jobs to be wary, and I just don’t like to mess with chemicals near my eyes. It’s interesting to think about, though. 🙂
Instant Karma says
Oh, I know! I’ve been curious about lash tinting. I have long eyelashes, and if the tips weren’t blonde, I would definitely skip mascara during the day. I’m just way too scared to put dye BY MY EYES, ahhhhh. When you really think about it, it kind of sounds like the premise for a bad horror movie (or maybe it’s just me).
kalcedon says
Lots. Blood red lips, colored hair (I mean, I’d have dark blue hair someday… if I had the courage :D), feather/colored hair exrensions, dark purple lips, haute couture eye-makeup (anywhere :D)…

I’ve always wanted to try super dramatic eyeliner — a smokey cat eye that extends a good inch past my eyes! I’ve only worn small and classic cat eyes. It’s silly; I can rock bright yellow eyeshadow and my lips are bright red on a very frequent basis, but a crazy cat eye intimidates me! I have a couple concerns:
1. I’m lazy, and it would take a really long time to get it right, lol
2. Since my eyes are deep set (my brow bone is super prominent), I can’t go too dark on the lid except right up against the lash line. Seriously, when I wear a dark smokey eye, I look like an Australopithecine or something. It’s hilariously awful looking.
Ah, screw it. You’ve inspired me! I’m staying in tonight because I’m sick, so it is crazy cat eye time. Even if I look like an idiot, I’m sure Tigger and Gizmo will appreciate my effort to look more like them.
P.S. Did I mention that Gizmo ALWAYS watches me while I put on makeup or try on different outfits/shoes? I think she wants to be a stylist when she grows up.
Angelic Mariposa Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ says
Instant Karma you are hilarious and I’m sure you don’t look like Australopithecine (I googled it, and I’m not ashamed to say it)! Glad you are going for it, I’m still trying to get that perfect crisp point at the end that doesn’t end up looking Amy Winehouse-esque…RIP!! MAC blacktracks is not always a friend when I’m in a hurry!! I feel your pain!!
Instant Karma says
Aw, thank you 🙂 ! Okay, maybe I don’t look like an ancient human ancestor (always glad to share the nerdery, lol), but it’s still pretty tragic when I put on tons of dark eyeshadow. As for the cat eye, it’s hard enough to get tiny tails even! My right one always starts out lower than my left, and it takes forever to correct it, grr. I’m wondering if it might be easier use black shadow instead of gel or liquid liner until I really get the hang of it. Anyway, hopefully, I’ll be able to pull off a dramatic cat eye without looking nuts, or going too far down the Amy Winehouse road :/. Her voice was amazing, but her makeup was often not.

Maybe get some cheapo extensions and dye the ends and see if you like em before you try it on your own hair? I’m sure most of the “it girls” have extensions anyway.
Cristina says
Oh Karen! Last week I saw that pic too! And I loved it!I was totally going to dye some of my hair extensions to get ombrè in purple but then I thought Heyy I’m 32 I live in a small little town, prob It’s not a good idea! But also After all are clip extensions… Don’t know what to do? Nobody has ombre hair hereee!!! Can u believe it!!!
Michele DiCola says
Threaded eyebrows, fake eyelash attachments & the perfect red lipstick for me!
Maja says
This is going to sound so dumb but here we go – high heels. That’s right. I don’t wear them often. I’m already almost 5’11” and even shorter heels make me feel taller than EVERYONE
Instant Karma says
I’m 5’11” and I know how you feel! Whenever I wear heels (a rare occurrence), people stare at me and it can be a little unnerving. I’ve decided that whenever I wear heels, I should look and feel fabulous: dramatic outfit, nice makeup, etc. When I feel really confident, I don’t mind so much if people are staring, unlike if I’m just out running errands or something. Try wearing heels out one night when you feel great! Sure, people will notice you first because of your height, but they’ll keep staring because you look amazing 🙂

I am with you on this trend.. I love the regular subtle ombre hair but now that I’m seeing the colorful trend happening I’d really like to just go for it. I’ve been really into just going with it and trying new things out (I just chopped off 6 inches of my hair today and got a long bob, something I’ve been too scared forever to do!) but my only concern is how that would work out in my work setting. If I were to do it I’d definitely try out a dark red, purple, or magenta since I have dark hair.

I’ve wanted a few pink highlites forever, when I mentioned it to my hairdresser she must have thought I was kidding because I’m otherwise pretty conservative with hair color. I found the most amazing ombre hair extensions at Walgreens a few weeks ago (for 4$) and bought a couple- I love them! If you have dark hair and bleaching it out is going to be damaging you may want to look into getting a couple of extensions- cheaper than a pair of earrings right?
Lisa says
2 Words: Rihanna Red!! Might turn out pink on my bleached hair.. And don’t want to think of going back to blonde.. Can’t get it out of my mind, though!
Destinee says
OMG if i didnt have dark hair and skin i would do that

I really want to dye my hair multiple bright neon colors.
Teri says
I really want to do ombre hair, but think I am a little late on the trend. I’m trying to embrace bright lips too; I put one on almost every morning but wipe it off before I head out the door.
