Heya, chicas. Hope your day’s been a good one so far.
Things are much better on this end. A pint of Haagen-Daz Dulce de Leche fro-yo, a long bath and some Sex and the City episodes from season deux (remember when Carrie dates the new Yankee?!) helped lift me out of my funk. 🙂
Earlier while I was chillin’ in the tub, I got to thinking about the different things that comfort us when we’re feeling out of sorts. For me, most of the time a relaxing activity, like watching a movie, helps a lot, but I also have those moments when a long run or walk does the trick.
What cheers you up when you’re feeling down? Please share a few of your favorites in the comments.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Well, I’m feeling pretty blue lately and I’m kinda embarassed to admit it but I just found this website today and made me feel a whole lot better…!

Karen says
Hi Taffy,
LOL! What’s going on with that website? Is that guy for real?
Luciole says
The Muppet Show, online shopping, and some junk food or snacks. I’m feeling crappy lately (thank you, PMS), so I’ve been shopping a lot.
Karen says
Hi Luciole,
Have you ever been to the California Adventure park that’s next to Disneyland in SoCal? They have this awesome show called MuppetVision 3D. I saw it a few years ago and it was like my childhood dream come true.
Archelle says
MBB, of course!
Also Grand Theft Auto. 😀
Karen says
Hi Archelle,
🙂
Oh, and Grand Theft Auto is one of my BFF’s favorite games! I’ve never played it before, but something tells me I’d be terrible at it. I’m one of those drivers who is happy to chug along in the slow lane.
shontay says
Hey Karen,
Music always saves me when I’m feeling blue. It just does something to my soul, whether it’s beyonce, john mayer, or kanye west. I can’t stay down for long when I have my music and that’s why I travel with my ipod 24/7 (along with my lip gloss, girl). 🙂
Karen says
Hi Shontay,
Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could find a way to combine the iPod with a lipstick/lipgloss holder? You’d never have to be without the essentials.
LOL, a billion years ago I saw John Mayer live in SF. He winked and smiled while he was playing on stage (my friend Roz can attest to this). I was giddy for days.
How was your Tuesday? Anything exciting happen?
Kelly says
Watching something funny like Seinfeld always cheers me up. And definitely anything cake like 🙂

Hi Kelly,
YUM! Have you ever had any of the cake slices at Safeway? They make this fudge slice one that’s sooo good.
Tiffany says
Listening to music really loudly, reading a good book to distract myself, or looking at something funny online to make myself laugh!

Hi Tiffany,
Have you read any good books lately? I need some new material!
Vonvon says
Shopping! And if I’ve over my budget on shopping, then just spend some time looking and admiring my collection Stila, Anna sui’s, Estee Lauder, etc, playing with them….. 😉
Or just simply whip out some old DVDs of my favorite dramas and watch the episodes which I like!

Hi Vonvon,
It’s been awhile since I’ve dug out my Stila goodies. What are your favorites from the line?
Marce says
Karen, I love you. LOL
Go Dulce De Leche! You HAVE to try good Argentine ice-cream, really creamy with chunks of dulce de leche in it. It’ll rock.your.world.
Anyway…when I feel rather bleu, azul, etc, I like chilling with music (I love music, good songs make me get goosebumps). Or hugging my dog. Or sitting in the sun. Or eating chocolate or something with hella calories. Or talking to my friends. You know, the usual cheesy stuff. =)

Ruth says
Baskin Robbins Pink Bubblegum ice cream, dairy milk chocolate & Pride & Prejudice !
Karen says
Hi Ruth,
I haven’t had that BR flavor in years. I can’t believe it’s still around.
How do you feel about their seasonal Peppermint? I wait all year for it.
shontay says
OMG, Karen!!! I would’ve passed out right there if john winked at me. I am seriously in love with him. So hot.
Anyway, nothing exciting for me today. I’m just chilling out because later I’m supposed to help my friend clean up the place she’s moving out of. Yeah, middle of the night cleaning because I’m such an awesome friend. LOL
Karen says
Hi Shontay,
Yeah, I was pretty stoked at the time. I saw him twice before he really blew up — once at a teeny tiny club where he was a stone’s throw away, and the second time at the Fillmore in SF. What do you think of all his new tats? I’m not crazy about them…
Aren’t you on vacay this week? That’s nice of you to help move your friend!
Colette says
i have a very similar routine to yours karen! it involves a movie marathon: for me its Gilmore Girls-the crazy talk makes me laugh no matter what situation. its always season 1, 2, or 3 for me cuz those were the best. and milo venitmigilia **sigh**
i eat my cocoa camino dark chocolate bar (55% cocoa and its organic and fair trade so no guilt trips there.
this goes down in my bed with all the covers wrapped around me as i feast literally and (on milo)
aaah sweeeet therapy
Karen says
Hi Colette,
You are too cute. I have yet to watch the Gilmore Girls. Gotta remember to put that one on my list. 🙂
Since you’re a Milo fan, are you excited for the new season of Heroes?
CC says
reality TV on the Bravo network!!
Karen says
Hi CC,
I hear that! I miss my eps of Millionaire Matchmaker something fierce!
Hyzenthlay says
Hi Karen,
I’m curious, which tiny club did you see JM at? I saw him years ago at a small club in SF and could almost reach out at touch him. One of my friends at the time was good friends with one of his backup musicians at the time, which was pretty cool. I remember that later that year or the next year he opened for Norah Jones in SF and I was SO angry that I missed that show!
As far as things that always make me feel better . . . I love walking through the drugstore at the Marketplace, then going to Panda Express and getting an order of Orange Chicken, and finally returning home to either watch retuns of The Simpsons, Futurama, or Bones OR a movie. If my boyfriend is involved, that makes it just THAT MUCH BETTER 🙂
Oh, and I make sure to give my dog a lot of scratches, so I get the “I adore you” look from him.
Karen says
Hi Hyzenthlay,
GIRRRL — was that the show where John kept sipping on a cup of tea throughout the entire set? I think KFOG sponsored it. If you were there, then I was there too!
Oh, too bad you missed the Norah Jones/John Mayer show at the Fillmore. It was really good! She opened for him, if my foggy memory serves me right.
BTW, your cheering up ritual sounds lovely. Now I want some orange chicken.
Kate & Zena says
When I’m having a bad day, I look no further than Zena. Since she’s come into my life, she’s managed to put a smile on my face with just one look. She’s cute put on a pedestal!
If Zena is unavailable (which is never), a good book or an old Disney cartoon movie (Aristocats, 101 Dalmatians, etc. it all works for me).
Karen says
Hi Kate & Zena,
It’s amazing the power our pets have to heal! Tabs kept me company practically all day. It was the best medicine. 🙂
Luciole says
Karen;
I’ve read about MuppetVision 3D! I’ve love to go someday, but California’s far from me; I’ll have to take a trip down there sometime to go see it!
Karen says
Hi Luciole,
I really hope you get to see it. Both El Hub and I are HUGE fans of the Muppets, and we went frickin’ nuts… it’s like actually being in the Muppet theater!
If you ever make it out here and up to Nor Cal let me know. I can give you a couple of fun things to do in San Francisco.
Michelle says
Sadly, I turn to chocolate when I am feeling down. I do exercise 5-6 times a week, which does help with the blues. But sometimes a girl just needs chocolate LOL A fun lunch outing with the girls always seems to help, too!
Karen says
Hi Michelle,
We are in the same boat. My weakness — warm chocolate brownies with a gooey center. When I eat them I tend to forget how many miles of running it takes to actually burn one off!
Patty says
Baking. Gives me something positive to focus on, and I get a sweet treat when I’m done!
Hyzenthlay says
Karen,
That’s crazy 🙂 I am pretty sure that was the same show I went to! I don’t remember the tea, because the thing that struck me the most was how focused he was during solos (to me he looked a bit constipated). I loved how much energy he put into playing for us, you could tell that it was truly the only thing in his world at that moment.
You’re right about that Norah Jones/JM show . . . I’m still mad (this many years later) that I missed it!
I’ve seen her a couple of times, before she got huge too, once at a winery in Mountain View and later at the open-air amphitheater in Berkeley. Both awesome shows.
I am honored to share my comfort with you 🙂
Karen says
Hi Hyzenthlay,
How funny! The interwebz really does bring people closer together. I remember how “intense” he looked during the solos, too, ha ha! Did you know he has a blog? He rarely updates it, but it’s good for a laugh here and there.
You are so lucky to have seen those Norah Jones shows. I bet the open-air theater show in Berkeley was awesome. I think she has a very soothing voice, and I love her lyrics. 🙂
Kelly says
I have eaten the cake slices at Safeway many, many times! I am a white cake and white frosting junkie, it’s soooo bad. I try to avoid that entire section like the plague now 🙂
.-= Kelly’s last blog post… Get Your Fish Here! =-.
Karen says
Hi Kelly,
Oh, that’s one I’ve yet to try! It sounds really good right now. Safeway is just steps away — right across the street! TEMPTATION!
Have you tried any of their cake topped with fruit? I dunno… I like the idea of getting some fiber but if you’re gonna eat junk food I figure you might as well go all the way.
Kypris says
Chocolate… and dance practice/lesson. I find focused exercise is rather meditative and often works wonders!
Karen says
Hi Kypris,
So true. Gotta love those powerful post-workout endorphins. 🙂
shontay says
yeah, I am on vacay karen, but I’m helping her move because that’s what friends are for, right?
I couldn’t believe john got his whole arm done. I don’t like tats at all, but I can overlook it for him. It seems out of character, but everything else about him makes up for it. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Shontay,
I know! I was kinda shocked when I saw his arm sleeve. It seemed like such an extreme thing to do.
Are you enjoying your vacay so far? What’s on your agenda for today?
Sonja says
What helps the blues- chocolate (nutella included), music (wholeheartedly agree on john mayers music, though nobody’s ever heard of the guy in my country) some bbc drama or period drama (hello North&South and Jane Eyre) or just talking to my mother. And maybe, if the case is beyond helping watch Indiana Jones 3 for the millionth time.
And mint tea, it always helps!
Karen says
Hi Sonja,
Mint tea! I have to add that to my “comfort” list. 🙂
What’s your favorite John Mayer song? Mine will always be No Such Thing.
Karen B says
The new Yankee!! Loved that episode 🙂
What cheers me up is a piece of really good Belgian chocolate and watching a musical. Lately it’s Sweeney Todd (I know, pretty macabre cheering up but the music is wonderful!).
And I ordered my passport today. Had to use the speedy application though. That’ll be ouch in my wallet. But now I can get my ticket and I’m off to Canada on Wednesday !!! :):)
Karen says
Hi Karen B.,
You’re such a world traveler. 🙂 Why are you heading to Canada? Is it another school-related thing?
Faye says
I think Haagen-Dasz frozen yogurt Dulce De Leche is my favorite sweet, Karen. I saw it and, in Pavlovian fashion, started salivating :).
You know what’s really good? If you put some of this stuff in the blender with skim milk and even fat-free caramel sauce — you have fantastic, low-cal ice cream shake.
Karen says
Hi Faye,
Funny — I actually like to eat the stuff when it’s soft and a little melted, so that shake sounds right up my alley!
ines, felix and kitten (the office kitties) says
well actually, it’s not even the way he looks, it’s the way we dance together, and how he moves, that makes me wonder about things that i’m not supposed to, if you know what i mean 😉
happy hump day!

When i’m feeling down I like to do the following:
1.) Delicious jasmine tea
2.) 3 mile run along the beach in Santa Monica
3.) Shower with VIVO Natural Products’ bar soaps (they smell so yummy- especially their Rosewater & Jasmine shea butter soap)
This will usually bring me back to good spirits! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Jennifer,
A cut of jasmine tea sounds divine. 🙂 Thanks for sharing your list!

I suffer from depression, so I’ve tried to find lots of ways to keep myself from feeling bad. Wearing amazing nail polish colors can really help.. the ones that just make you feel good when you look at the color. Getting some love from my kitty never fails to make me smile and when she acts silly, I LOL & feel better. Comfort foods, like ice cream, fruity Jell-o with Cool Whip, & and yummy mashed potatoes never almost never fail at making me feel better (but not eaten all at once 😉 ). Lastly, watching funny stuff on-line, like YouTube or Angry Alien.com’s 30 second movies made by bunnies, and happy, peppy music make me want to move and laugh and get up off my mopey butt.
Oh, and cool beauty blogs are good too. 😛
Karen says
Hi Aurorgyps,
What a lovely list. Thank you for sharing your comforts — I gotta say that I have been tempted to eat all the foods you listed at once, LOL!
malvidia says
washing and straightening my hair makes me feel a lot better. tidying up too, often. shopping, using a different perfume, anything that stimulates my senses usually makes me feel good. today was a rough day (and still too hot to even think about hair straightening!) so i had a nice fresh shower, i went to wash my car with a friend who listened to my rants, and i did some tidying. i also talked about stupid things with my BF and he made me laugh a lot.
feeling loved and cared fot can’t be beaten! 😀
Karen says
Hi Malvidia,
Yes, that is so true. I’m glad that you have friends and a BF there for you on rough days. They’re like instant medicine, right?
Hope your evening is going well so far. Are you doing anything fun?
Tiffany says
Hi Karen! I read all 4 twilight books this summer, but I think you already read them. I just got the host from the library today; have you read it? I hope it’s good!
Karen says
Hi Tiffany,
That book is SO GOOD. I got really emotional at the end — cried like a baby at 2 in the morning, for reals!
Diana Kim says
You should try Haagen-Dazs Sticky Toffee Pudding ice cream. OH MY GOODNESS…I can eat a whole tub in one sitting. I think that makes me feel better in any situation. Glad to hear you’re out of your funK! :0)
Karen says
Hi Diana Kim,
Oh, that sounds tempting! I suppose they don’t make a low-fat fro-yo version of it, huh?
Joanne says
Haagen_Dazs pints are a one sitting treat. I also like
M&M’s(plain and peanut). Good comfort food.
Karen says
Hi Joanne,
What’s your favorite Haagen-Daz flavor?
Karen B says
Yeah, I guess. It’s a realy travel-year for me.
I’m going to visit two of my best friends from summer school in London. And take some me-time, I need it badly!
Karen says
Hi Karen B.,
I’m jealous — I wish being able to have even just the possibility of travel. Now with work it just seems harder and harder.
How’s your Wednesday been?
Wendy says
Hey Karen do you know you can make homemade dulce de leche? really easy just dump a can of condensed milk (no wrapping)in to a double boiler (my mom use to do it when she was making beans).
Karen says
Hi Wendy,
Seriously? Oh no… now that I know the secret I’m screwed, LOL! I’ll be wanting to eat it every day! 🙂
How’s was your day? Anything exciting happen?
