Driest parts of my skin? Oy! I don’t even know where to start.
On my face, usually my cheeks, and this is consistent all year ’round, even summer. And then around the middle of winter I start getting dry patches around my mouth and my nostrils, and sometimes they’re so dry that they turn red and flaky. Weirdly, however, this wasn’t always the case. Up until my early 30s, I had straight-up oily skin and dryness was never an issue. Sometimes I’d even skip moisturizer, GASP! Now, though, that is no longer an option. When I don’t use lotion on my face, my skin feels really tight. Sometimes it hurts.
Oh, the woes of a dry-cheeked girl…
On my body, the dryness is pretty much spread all over the place. It’s equal opportunity dryness! — although there are places, like my shins, my feet and especially my hands, that do get noticeably drier in the winter.
I literally never leave the house without a tube of hand cream in my purse.
And I’ve definitely noticed that the dryness depends on the climate and the humidity. When I leave the Bay Area, like when I go to Redding to see my in-laws up north, where it’s inland and there’s much lower humidity, the dryness kicks up several notches. Same thing when I go to Las Vegas or Arizona or other parts of the Southwest.
I think if I lived in those areas I’d have to start bathing in heavy-duty cream moisturizer, LOL!
What about you? How’s your dry skin situation, and what are the driest areas?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. So the Pope and I go to the same bakery.
FOR REALS! This morning I heard on the news that a local bakery in town, Rustic Bakery in Novato, is providing Pope Francis with flatbread and crostini during his visit to the U.S. this week.
I mean, it’s not like he’ll be standing in line next to me while I get my baguette or anything (although that would be pretty cool), it’s almost like we’re breaking bread together. Almost. Actually, I have half a loaf of their rosemary bread in my kitchen right now. I’ve been using it for sandwiches. 🙂
That Rustic Bakery place is SO good. Don’t even get me started on their limeade. I drank it all summer!
They make some bomb-@ss soups and salads, too.
And mouthwatering sweets. I’m a big fan of this brownie…
If you’re ever passing through Novato, you should check it out! They also have a location in the town of Larkspur.

I have has dry skin since forever. My cheeks and undereye area are the worst. In the winter, it is like crocodile skin. I am also menopausal, so my face is as dry as can be. I also have patchy skin on the heels of my feet.
Rachel says
I hate when I get those dry flaky patches on the corners of my mouth, it’s disgusting!
That food looks delicious! I want it all!

My skin is currently freaking the hell out after going off birth control! I’m on the drier side, especially in the cheeks and eye areas. However, I have some crazy breakouts going on. So embarrassing.

UGH, I wish! I’m 44 and my skin is still straight-up GREASY! I keep hoping that it will dry out with age, but it hasn’t… I can’t even begin to tell you what a pain in the ass it is to have a face that produces as much oil as an OPEC nation — I HATE IT!
Gillian says
This is going to sound nutso, but honestly try using a light cleansing oil, it may very well rebalance things. Often times we’re told to dry out oily skin but that just makes it worse. Check out Caroline Hiron’s blog for more info on this.
Sun says
I already use a light cleansing oil to remove makeup. Nothing works. I’m like my mother who was also extremely oily and remained so for years even after menopause. I keep hoping every year that I’ll dry out, but it hasn’t happened yet.
Katie says
Pretty much everywhere… 🙁 Especially on my body. I have keratosis pilaris all over my body, as well as just really dry flaky skin, so my body skin is a mess. Since I’ve found a skincare routine that works, my face is much better than it has been in the past.
Diana says
I have recurring eczema and it’s usually very dry on under my lower lip and near the lip corners (it’s annoying because I can have acne AND dry patches on the same area).
aziza says
Hi diana,
I have the same issue. Can i ask what your skincare regime is? I am having an issue with balancing th eczema and the acne 🙁
Diana says
Aziza, I’m sorry you’re having the same problem! I use Oriflame Nature’s Secret tea tree facial wash, toner, and face lotion. For dry areas I use Nivea Creme.
Kiss & Make-up says
My skin is pretty much oily allover, except for under my eyes. So I moisturize more there.
Also: DAT BROWNIE.

Grease ball for life! My body is however very dry and I have psoriasis skin 🙁 Sometimes my face suddenly changes and becomes super dry so you can say my skin is moody like me.. lol!
LindaLibraLoca says
On my face it is around my mouth, but only in the depths of winter or after too much air-con, like in Singapore earlier this year.
But on my body… All very, very dry, especially my shins.
Indya says
My face is ridiculously oily… everywhere. My body, probably my elbows!
Vanessa C says
oh that brownie looks divine!
on to skin lol .. my skin has been oily since I can remember, but lately it’s been extremely dry. I’m not familiar with this and it’s driving me nuts. I’ve been using EMBRYOLISSE Lait-Crème Concentré and it’s been a lifesaver. Also, I finally tried an ice facial… basically rubbing an ice cube over my face before I moisturize, and its been a game changer!
Erin says
Pretty much everywhere but my nose is dry. In the summer my chin and forehead are less dry. This is due to a Thyroid problem. Before that I had oily to normal skin.
Sissi says
Definitely around my eyes! Otherwise I am a slippy oily mess. 😉
Kim says
That is SO cool about the Pope. It’s always nice when one of your favorite places gets a mention. 🙂
Like you, I find I’m drier in the winter (and OMG, forget about Vegas – it’s like stepping into a convection oven). I wear lotion, head to toe, every day, year round. In the winter, I find I’m also dry around my nose/mouth and on my hands. And I’m the same with the lotion (in my purse, on my desk, all around the house!).
Kim says
I don’t remember if we’ve talked about this before but I’m currently laughing after typing “in my purse… house”. Did you ever see the Sarah Silverman video that she did for Jimmy Kimmell when they were dating (about Matt Damon)? That’s all I can think of now (on the bed, on the floor…). HAHA!
Iris says
I have combination skin in the winner and my driest part of my face is my cheeks.
Holly says
Arms & legs including heels; can you say crocodile skin? And yet, I’m terrible about moisturing those bits! At least I’ve gotten better at using a cuticle cream at night.
Rachel R. says
My dry spots are my hands, elbows and feet. I don’t understand why I have such an oily face, but such a dry body.
Fancie says
My mouth seems to be the driest area but my nose and cheeks can get pretty dry too. I’m so glad I was eating a bowl of cheesy rice and broccoli right now because that egg salad is looking so delicious lol
Gillian says
I always tend to have dry cheeks & often very dry lips. I love facial oils as they really make a difference.
