It’s a cold, gray Wednesday here in the San Francisco Bay Area, homies, and the ache in my knees tells me that rain’s a-comin’!
On the bright side, April showers bring May flowers, and perhaps even a bit of MAC. 🙂
Today’s giveaway features something water-resistant, you know, just in case it rains. MAC’s smudgy Greasepaint Stick in Slick Black is a jill of many trades, a multitasking maven unafraid of wet and wild days.
The prize
One lucky lady will win long-wearing MAC Greasepaint Stick in Slick Black, a creamy black eye crayon ($18 value) that works well as a liner, a shadow or even as a base for powder eyeshadows (busts out some FABOOLICIOUS smokey eyes).
How to enter…
Entering is easy. There are two different ways, and you can do both of them for two chances to win.
First, you can enter by leaving a comment at the bottom of this post. In it, share one or more of your favorite eyeliner tips/tricks.
To get a soft, barely-there liner look that puts the focus on your eyes, 🙂 dot the lash lines with an eyeliner pencil, and smudge the dots together with an applicator sponge.
Second, enter by following me on Twitter and retweeting (RT) the following message:
Follow @karenmbb and RT to win MAC Slick Black Greasepaint Stick (an $18 value) http://bit.ly/9maYIQ

P.S. So much yummy MAC goodness to look forward to, ladies! Tomorrow Pret a Papier, already available online, drops on counters. To put it mildly, I’m stoked.
And I can’t wait for the new Superglass glosses ($18 each). Those boogie on down to MAC counters on May 6.
MAC says the nine glosses are even more blinged-out than their super-sparkly Dazzleglass line, and they used something they call “snowflake-shaped helicone pearls” to ramp up the sparkle while NOT ramping up the grit. We’ll see!
From top: Cherry Electric (a bright cherry pink), Disco Blend (a light tan), Fab Frenzy (a deep blueish purple), Gift Wrap (a light pinkish peach), Sugar Overload (a beige-y white), Superflash! (a mid-tone yellowish pink), Sweet Tart (a pale baby pink), Totally Bang! (fuchsia), Tunnel of Love (a deep blueish brown)
Jenna says
For gel eyeliner, I LOVE the SK Bent Eyeliner brush. It makes it so quick and foolproof, works even better than my Bobbi Brown eyeliner brush, but it’s sooooo much cheaper.
happybadfish says
I use a skinny angle brush, the one I got is a travel size brush from sephora. I love using my Stila eye Kajal with this brush since the liner is so creamy.
This also works good as a smoky eye base.
Gen says
i like to put my MAC Pale yellow then Powersurge and smudge it with my Eye smulder brush from Quo. It takes away the redness and the color of Poersurge becomes very bright.
Kylie says
Usually getting my brush wet before I dip it in gel/cream liner helps them to apply more darkly and smoothly.
Caitlin says
If my pencil eyeliner is hard to apply I warm it under a lightbulb for 10 seconds and it glides on nicely. I also use white eyeliner on my bottom lids to make my eyes appear larger.
Rosie says
i use waterproof pencils and then gently soften the line with a dry clean lip brush. the skinny tip (but not as skinny as an eyeliner brush) softens the lines perfectly. Urban Decay, Make up forever and NYC make really good waterproof eye pencils. I’m definitely interested in trying the MAC
Melissa says
thanks to Michelle Phan, i am super at tight-lining my eyes with my gel liner! i am blonde haired/blued eyed and very fair-so tight-lining my black liner is the only way i can wear it without looking courtney love-ish!
Debbie says
I usually go slowly, with small strokes, and keep checking how it looks as I go (I don’t have a very steady hand, so I don’t want to end up with a wobbly line!)
ninja says
I’m having fun with your blog!
I’m a complete makeup newbie, so all the product reviews are great.
I’m going to head over to check out some makeup tips,
and your post on drugstore brands.
I need to get some toys to play with!
Victoria says
To do a perfect winged eyeliner, you should follow the natural angle of your waterline.
Tuhina says
I use my slanted eye liner brush from Sephora to put MAC fluidline really close to my lash line!
Lego says
Using a post-it note to help with sharp angles while using liquid eyeliner works our lovely for me!
Sarah says
After applying eyeliner on your waterline, use your index finger and drag it out, to create a ‘reverse’ eyeliner effect!
Val says
i use MAC’s liquidlast liners. They have really slim brushes and can apply very tinny, if i do not want a very bold look.
PJ says
I love using a slightly stiff Sonia Kushak brush with Buxom gel eyeliner. Put the liner close to the lash line and start out thin, increasing the width slightly as you get to the outer eye and wing it up for a brigh-eyed look.
HC says
I love using my Chanel e/s quads as eyeliner but don’t forget a spritz of fix+ on them. Using powder as eyeliner makes it less harsh especially if all you use is black on your eyes. For some odd reason, I think wet Chanel e/s lasts SO freakin’ long! I loves me some Chanel!!
.-= HC’s last blog post… 30% OFF! =-.
HC says
OH and I use the Sigma 266 brush with it. That or the MAC one for a more precise thin line.
.-= HC’s last blog post… 30% OFF! =-.
T says
With an eyeliner pencil dip it in a cream or gel liner pot and line your waterline.
Diana S. says
I usually wear black liquid eyeliner on my top lid. I start off at the center of my lashline then extend it out and give it a bit of a wing at the outer corner. I then go back and start at the inner corner of my upper lashline and draw a line to meet up at the center of my lid where i first started. It makes it easier for me that way since its thicket on the outer side of my lid and thinner towards my nose.
Priscilla Chu says
It’s an oldie but a goodie.
To set my eyeliner, I ALWAYS put the color eyeshadow right on top. No budging (:
Zeni says
I don’t really have a good tip or trick, I just go really slow.
Lately I’ve just overlined my eyes and then smudged it out and layered a sheer duochromed color over it for a more spring appropriate smokey eye.
Cecille says
my tip is to use a jane iredale eyeliner brush which is just thin enough to get right on to the lash line. then blend with a smudger brush.. but i’m sure everyone does this already!
Amanda says
I don’t really have any good tips but I do highly recommend the Sonia Kashuk bent eyeliner brush. I read the great review on here and went out and bought it…makes lining your eyes soooo easy and perfect!!
yiota says
I always wipe my waterline before applying my eyeliner.. it makes it dry and easier for the eyeliner to glide on. :]
onigiri says
I usually use a angled brush to go over the line I made with pencil eyeliner. It helps soften the edges and makes it appear super straight and perfect.
Aly says
After applying eyeliner on my bottom lid, I always use a q-tip and dip some loose translucent powder and swipe it right below my eyeliner. This prevents smudging. Also, I like to use eyeliners as an eyeshadow, especially if I’m in a hurry. I love Urban Decay’s 24/7 liners because they are so creamy and stay on your lid all day long.
LB says
When applying gel or liquid liners, don’t curl your lashes until afterward to avoid getting liner in your lashes. (And wait a few minutes for the liner to dry!)
Morgan says
I love to use eyeliner pencils as a base for eyeshadow especially on a night out. It really makes the shadow pop and stick all night!
jenna says
When I put a little pressed powder over my under-eye concealer, my under-eye liner stays put, rather than creeping down and making me look like a raccoon!
Megan says
Hi Karen! Thanks for doing this giveaway 🙂 I use eyeliner only on my top lids, otherwise I look like a raccon!
.-= Megan’s last blog post… rainy mondays =-.
Clara says
I always smudge my eyeliner after applying it. The look is softer and more romantic.
Jane says
For easier application and a smoother finish, I use the side of my eyeliner pencil instead of the tip.
Ling says
I use a bit of liquid liner on my lower lashes instead of mascara. It stays way better.
Julie says
hi karen! i’ve never actually used gel or cream liners (i know… i know…) but one trick to getting eyeliner pencils to glide on more smoothly is to roll the pencil between your hands for a minute to warm up the liner and then apply. works like a charm!
makeup morsels says
followed you on twitter and retweeted!
I prefer very thin lines when I’m lining my upper lashline, and I usually do this by applying my pencil liner at an extreme angle right against the lashline.

I love using bright colored eyeliners as shadow base. I’ll draw in the liner all the way up to my crease for crazy intense color! then top off with sparkly matching eyeshadow to make my eyes pop! of course line the bottom of my eyes with the same liner and eyeshadow for a super intense look =]
Christina says
I own the ubiquitous MAC 266 for lining my eyes but I find that I like using the mini concealer brushes that come in brush kits for lining my eyes too! They’re gentle and do just as good of a job as my 266! However, I have yet to get any liner to stay put on my waterline. Ever. hahaha.
Courtney L says
Please? I think this would help me try a new eyeliner look. I usually just tightline. Have any suggestions?
Nina says
To do an easy smokey eye – I use a black paint/smudge pot and very evenly apply it all over the lid. I usually just use my fingertips to apply and blend. I may either use a primer beforehand or not. Once done, I would get a fluffy eyeshadow brush, grab some bright green or bright blue pigment and gently pat it over the paint. Quick, easy, not overdone!!!
vantalee says
I was watching Lauren Luke on youtube and a tip she gave (mostly for liquid liner) is to put your pinky finger on your cheek if you are having trouble with a steady hand when applying.
vantalee says
I follow you and tweeted: http://twitter.com/vantalee/status/12605948799
Rebecca says
I don’t know if this can really be considered a trick/tip, but I’ve found that if I line my lower lashline with a brown eye shadow just a little darker than my skin, it makes my eyes look a lot bigger. And since the shadow shouldn’t be too dark in comparison to your skin tone, it’s pretty much impossible to mess up ^_^
.-= Rebecca’s last blog post… Hitting the pan =-.
Shannon says
One of my favorite things to do is layer shadow right on top of my liner to 1) set the liner, and 2) help blend any harsh lines. It’s good stuff!

oo, i’d love to win this. i’m retweeting too!
Jennifer says
Urban Decay’s eye liners are the only tricks I need, love that stuff!

To really set my eyeliner, I love to top off the pencil with an eyeshadow. This guarantees that it lasts all day long!
Thom says
I first have to prep my eyes with a primer then i will apply eyeliner. This is the only way to not get eyeliner smudges. The topping it off with an eyeshadow also help too. Thanks for the giveaway!
Tahnee says
My favorite eyeliner tip is after using gel or liquid liner, take a matte black shadow, like Carbon from MAC and with an angled brush, set the liner. It stays put all day! 😀
Cori says
since i’m a full time student I don’t always have time to do a full face of makeup, so i just swipe on some mascara and a flesh colored eyeliner to look more awake, because white looks too harsh on me
Katie says
I put eyeliner on my bottom lashes and then put mascara over it to help the eyeliner from bleeding. 🙂
.-= Katie’s last blog post… Happy Friday 🙂 =-.
Jodi Turner says
My trick is old but good-I have a shaky hand because of some of the medications I’m on, so I place an elbow on the table, break out the magnifying mirror and hold my eyelid taut and at an angle. Then I lightly but firmly draw a line. Retrace line if it’s too light. Plus it always helps to keep a sharp point on the eyeliner pencil.
Heather says
I like applying black eyeliner to the waterline, then shutting my eyes tight and keeping them closed for 5 seconds to let the liner transfer to my upper lashline 🙂
Molly says
I line my top lid with liquid black liner, let it dry a bit and then apply a thin line of Too Faced Neptune wet over it… soo pretty but simple!
Kelly says
yes please!
Toni says
I like to use a creamy white or light silver on my lower waterline to make my eyes appear brighter. When I want just a little something under my lower lashes, I use my MAC 208 brush with powder eyeshadow for a soft look.
Kelly says
to get the perfect winged-liner look, close your eye and go straight out from the middle of your eye- it’s the right height every time!
Amber says
I like to layer bright shadows over black eyeliner to make them pop. Was thinking of trying this for that very use. 🙂
.-= Amber’s last blog post… New hair =-.
amy says
Hm… not much of a tip but I always have a qtip ready to correct my mistakes, or thin the line if i’ve drawn it too heavily. nobody likes the panda look =P
Scientific Housewife says
Great giveaway! My email is butterflychk500@yahoo.com. I also retweeted about this! (SciHousewife)
Keri says
I don’t really have any eyeliner tips/tricks, but I like to use l’oreal’s extra intense pencil liner because it’s as intense as a liquid liner without being as tricky as one!
Sophia says
My eyes are pretty small, so I seldom apply eyeliner on my waterline (it makes my eyes look smaller). Instead, I use either a small angled brush or just a pencil, and I apply it to the outer corner of my eye. Then, I make sure to smudge it a lot, so it looks effortless and more natural. To go from day to night, I apply eyeliner as close as possible to my upper lash line (I rest the pencil on the lashes, so it glides seamlessly), and I smudge it a little. A little eyeliner can go a long way!
.-= Sophia’s last blog post… apassingfeeling:(via Maren Celest)there’s something… =-.
Tatiana says
i would never be able to apply gel liner without a bent eyeliner brush. the brush is the trick!
Agnes says
I always set my eyeliner with some eyeshadow so that it stays all day long. Somedays, i smudge a dark purple color on top of my black eyeliner to create a more dramatic effect without the hassle of doing a full smokey eye look. Works great!
Rachel says
I love to line only the outside of my upper lash and blend it into the center so it’s not so harsh and gives a little bit of a cat eye.
Fun!
Connie says
an angled brush is the way to go and tighlining makes your lashes look so much longer!
Kypris says
If I’m going winged-out eyeliner… I like to make a light line using a soft pencil eyeliner that can easily be rubbed off if the wing is uneven and can be redrawn… and THEN I go over it with Fluidline to make the look clean – and you can’t even see any messy pencil smudges underneath.
amber says
Oooh those Superglass glosses look amazing, can’t wait until they’re released. Thanks for the info Karen, and for the giveaway! I was *this* close to buying this Greasepain Stick and didn’t! So I’d love this. xoxoxo
My eyeliner trick: If you use a white or peach colored eyeliner on the inner rim it instantly makes you look more awake and refresh. It’s like a “nap” is a stick! 😉
angie says
those superglasses are the first new mac product i’ve been excited about in a looong time!
Rachel says
for eyeliner i use black creme color from ben nye. it is theater makeup but its amazing!! using a small brush works the best. it is very easy to control but it does smudge a little. if i want my eyeliner to stay put i will use a liquid one.

I love using a creamy, budgeproof pencil (MUFE AquaEyes) to line between my lashes. I just tilt my head back a little to get the pencil in between my lashes. Then I smudge it with a sponge-tipped applicator.
Diana says
I love smudging the greasepaint sticks all over my lid for a quick smokey look 🙂
Hazel says
i don’t really have a tip either but i i always wing out my liner! lifts my eyes to the sky haha
.-= Hazel’s last blog post… lol =-.
Karliah White says
This season is ALL about the greasy, shiny smokey eye! I prep my entire lids with “Painterly” PP with my finger only. The warmth allows you to smudge out the tiniest amount which is imperative under the greasepaint sticks. I then color in a bloch area starting at my lash line (about 1cm thick) and smudge out blending brush. Then use a small amount of vaseline on a brush and draw along the upper lash line and smudge out. Surprisingly, it doesn’t feel sticky, it doesn’t crease and looks so up to date!
Monique says
I don’t have a good tip for eyeliner. But I am so stoked about the superglass coming out! I want them all!!!
Mackenzie says
Eyeliner: smudge outwards not inwards
Ellen says
For smudgeless (or at least less smudgey) eyeliner, always always always buy waterproof! It doesn’t matter if you’re going to a sad movie or not: this stuff stays put way longer than the regular stuff. Also, to get a super smooth line, pull the eyelid taught once closed and then draw your line.
Julbra says
I take my brush in really short strokes and just go back and forth (for gel liners). Pencil is a little tricky or me…I hate pulling on my eyelid to get a straight line, but that seems to be the only way, my hands are not steady at all! So I try not to do that too often.
Alyce Gabriel says
Eyeliner: Loreal Hip Liquid. I try to take my time and let it sit for a bit on the brush before applying.
Katie says
I always have to remind myself to slow down at this part. usually after applying eyeshadow I’m starting to think, hey I have a lot of other stuff I need to be doing so I can leave the house in ten more minutes. So relax, stop, and do it right- ’cause you’ll only take longer if you don’t ; )
Jenny says
i just prime my lower lash line with ud eye primer and then top it off with ud eye liner! doesn’t buldge at all! and a little translucent powder beneath it don’t hurt either.

I love to tightline my upper lashline with MUFE aquaeyes and skip liner on my top lashline. It looks way less harsh this way!
Dasha says
to make my eyes look much wider, I only apply eyeliner on the outer half or outer third of my eye on the bottom and the outer third on my top and smudge it all out. Thennn I use a peachy nude eyeliner on the inner half in the water line and on the bottom lash line and smudge that 🙂
giselle says
those little eyeliner smudging sponges do not work for me so i apply the eyeliner and then curl my lashes..the curler pushes against my eyelid and smudges the eyeliner. i’m lazy i guess haha but thats how i get the best result for me
jennifer says
One of my fave eyeliner tricks is to seal it with a matching eyeshadow
Sarah says
Nowadays I’m frequenting the use of some gel liner–so long-wearing!!! Then before it dries, I like to put a metallic sort of eyeshadow (specifically Too Faced’s Label Whore) on top. It looks great and lasts.
Beth says
My fave eyeliner is cake eyeliner and it is hard to find!
Jenny says
I’m always using MAC’s fluidline in blacktrack with Sonia Kashuk’s bent eyeliner brush for a more precise, thin, and also neat cat eye liner 🙂 Don’t tug those eyelids, don’t want no wrinkles in the future eek.
Angela says
Using a flat eyeliner brush and MAC blacktrack, I line starting at the middle of my eyelid so it doesn’t smudge on to my lower lash line or inner corner, then flick at the outer corners for a subtle wing.
.-= Angela’s last blog post… wishlist wednesday: nars so famous set =-.
Lori says
i’m a gel eyeliner girl and the best way to get the perfect line every time is to keep the brush clean!! gel eyeliners create a lot of build-up FAST! and having a dirty brush wastes so much product!!
Devi says
UD’s 24/7 eye pencil in Zero or Bourbon layered over UDPP is what I wear everyday. The liner doesn’t budge until I go at it with make-up remover.
monica says
i get a little bit of urban decay primer potion on my angled liner brush and dab it above my lash line (over my shadows that i already put on) for my eyeliner to sit on!
Fabienne says
To get a slight wing with a pencil liner, line the top lashline, slightly extending past outer edge, and then, using a clean fingertip to barely touch the edge of your conjuctiva, go upward (almost like you are rubbing the line upward). Go over the lines with a coordinating shadow to set. This is how I achieve symmetry!
Erica says
the grease-sticks are really easy to apply if you just rub it on a finger tip and dab on your eyelid. Then using the same finger tip or another one blend out to get a smooth application, ready for eyeshadow or leave as is. Slick Black I hope you’re mine 🙂
CC says
No tips or tricks – I just use a good liquid eyeliner like Maybelline LineWorks.
Amy says
Oooh I want to try a Greasepaint! My fav eyeliner trick is to use a steel blue color on my lower lash line, instead of black. It’s much less harsh than black on my fair skin, plus the steel color is nice for blue eyes. 🙂
charlie says
well it’s not really a trick but for me it is… i’m asian so to make my eyes appear bigger i elongate my liner past the end/ corner of my eyes. NOT too much though or it will be noticible but just a little more than where my eye naturally ends. i also take my eyeshadow out that far too so it looks normal. LOL. normal?
also, when lining my eyes (everyday) i start the line very thin at inner corner and as i continue to the other end of my eye, i widen the line. so it’s a gradual increase in the thickness of the liner. i like how it gives a (false) full lash look.
Jenn says
MAC’s Fluidline in Blacktrack with the 266. I think I’m getting the hang of it. 😉
Jessica says
I like to use black and then for work I will use an angle brush to soften it a little bit. Sometimes I will use some eyeshadow on an angle brush to add a hint of color to the black.
Chrissy says
I use a eyeliner brush to hold up my lid when I tight line my upper lid.

my favorite eyeliner is urban decay stash. it’s an olive green, and goes on so smoothly. i heard this tip today from allure- after applying eyeliner, step into a steamy shower for a minute. it smudges the liner just a bit.
Kianna says

I like using an angled brush to pick up color from pencil liners. Never have to worry about the line getting too thick due to a blunt tip. Also comes in handy when you can’t find a sharpener right away 😛

Ashley says
I started using an eyeliner guard thingie I got from Hong Kong… At first I thought it was uber useless but now it is uber useful!
Aparnaa says
On days when I don’t want to have to say “eyes up here buddy!” I use two colors of eyeliner – one on the top and one on the bottom. I tightline the top with the unusual color, usually a dark navy or eggplant or brown, and then line the inner rim of my lower lash line with the black pencil (which for my dark complexion is “normal”, but I would assume for someone fairer than me could be brown as well). It draws attention to the eyes in a subtle way! And since very little about me is subtle, I can use that.
Sarah says
I love applying my eyeliner pencil across my top lashline, applying a thicker line at the outer edge. I then take a pencil brush and smudge the line upwards for a subtle smokey liner effect.
zeinab says
i use an eyeliner pencil and mac’s blacktrack to line my inner eye and keep my eyeliner on ALL DAY.
Nina says
When I do a cat eye liner, I initially draw it with a pencil liner then go over it with the gel or liquid liner so mistakes can be easily corrected.
Andrea says
This really isn’t an amazing tip, but it’s the only one I could think of lol! I like only apply my liner about 3 quarters of the way from the inner corner to the end. My eyes are fairly small so if I line the whole length of the lid, it just makes them look smaller. This way, I can still add definition to my eyes without making them look super small! 🙂
Jams j says
I use a cream liner with an angled brush such as MAC 266 and line my upper lashline and waterline… for the waterline, i use a primer such as Painterly Paint pot, and it stays on allllll dayy!
Michelle says
I use a black eyeshadow from victoria secrect as eyeliner for the bottom, lasts all day even with rain or tears =o)
Bonnie says
I make sure to get liner in between my lashes to make them look fuller.
Janelle says
When I’m rushing to get ready in the morning and I apply my black eyeliner crooked (instead of in a straight line), then I just smudge the line with my fingertips to create a simply smokey eye.
Amy says
Tightlining works for me as I have smaller eyes and usually look like a racoon within 1-2 hours of eyeliner application. I get the extra definition with tight lining without it smudging too much all over and under my eyes.
Joyce says
I warm up pencil eyeliner with my fingers before application so there is less tugging on my eyelids.
Danielle says
I love to use a 266 with Blitz and Glitz Fluidline for something more dramatic or I enjoy doing a color like mont black with the 266. 🙂
Steffi says
I don’t often line my eyes but then I use a creamy pencil 🙂
Tara Talebi says
I am ADDICTED to pencil liners right now. Especially browns!! I love how I can soften the eyeliner to get a smokey eye. You cant do that with liquid liners. I usually apply the eyeliner and then soften it with my finger.
Imogen says
If you’re worried about getting liquid eyeliner the right shape, do a faint guide line in pencil. That way you can make sure the flicks are even without having to worry about smudging!
Eve says
My favorite eyeliner trick is to my small lines that I will continue throughout the lash line till I make a full line. It always works for me instead of doing a whole line.

For a nice effect try making your line a bit thicker and line upwards towards the outer edge of your eye.
Petra says
I’m sure this is a common way of applying eyeliner for many, but I really like using a dark brown (instead of black) and then blend it well, and apply a bit of dark eyeshadow on top of it. It creates the ‘already have been worn’ look but keeps the liner in good shape all day.
DiAni says
I line my upper lids with Urban Decay 24/7 then smudge the lines out upward with a Q tip. Instant smokey eye look, suitable for the 5 minutes face 😀
mint says
I rub my pencil liners on my hand so it’s not as sharp before I line the water line. I find it’s easy for the colour to go on. I also prefer brown over black liners too.
Maria says
I don’t have much of a ‘trick’ .. I just line my upper lid w/ MAC kohl eyeliner in smoldering as a base & go over it with a black e/s using a thin brush. I have ‘asian eyes’ so this helps to decrease the smudging for me 🙂

Use a brush with a pencil liner if the line is not precise/thin enough.
Van says
I like to wear my eye liner on my upper lash water line instead of on my lids, I feel it makes my lashes look longer, thicker and fuller that way without being too dramatic. It was a bit tricky at first, but I got it down. Problem sometimes is that it doesn’t stay put all day 🙁
Sug says
If black pencil looks too harsh some days on your eyes, it’s because it is. Bad sleep habits and dehydrated skin will make the problem worse.
Try brown instead of black, both as an eyeliner and in the waterline, and it’ll soften up the effect while still providing focus to your eyes.

Hannah says
For and extra bold look, I like to line my eyelids with Dior’s Style Liner and then go over that thin line with MAC’s 266 angle brush using Eye Definer Shadow in Black.
For bottom eyeliner I just use Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil, and after smudging dip a q-tip in liquid makeup remover and swipe, creating a clean line that doesn’t smudge because of the barrier that the makeup remover creates.
Gail says
No tricks – just do it – maybe gel/pencil/power/whatever I’m in the mood for
Chrissy says
For the most “natural” look, go for brown powder shadow applied with a wet liner brush and coat on some brown mascara for a little extra “oomph!” Love the way it livens up my eyes in the summer time without looking like I have any makeup on at all!
emily says
I like to only use liner on my bottom lid because I can’t make it straight on the top 😛
Tiffany says
I line my top lids with a pencil liner first then use a liquid liner to go over the line. The pencil lines acts as a guide for the iiquid liner.
Shiny says
I like to make my eyes look a little more lifted and less droopy by making the edge of my liner (blacktrack) a touch thicker… like a modified cat eye. By lifting the other edge and lining right till the inner eye my eye shape looks much better!
Neenaj says
When smudging big areas of liner (like greasepaint sticks) over the eyelid to use as a base for shadow, I love to use Sephora’s silicone “glitter shadow” applicator brush. The head of the brush is a triangle of silicone which leaves the product on your lids instead of in bristles or on your fingers.
(Plus, I’m a spaz… when I blend with my fingertips, I inevitably end up with a smudge somewhere else on my face!)
Amanda says
I discovered this little trick on accident, but it works wonderfully. Color in entire eyelid in a white creamy liner, smooth out with finger, add MAC Club e/s to the crease and blend well, makes a beautiful smokey eye!
MimiG323 says
When I was in high school i’d line my eyes with a white eyeliner and then push either dark purple, dark green, or navy blue eyeshadow into the eyeliner. I haven’t used this trick in a while, but it really made my eyes pop!
Ellie says
I back the upper lashes with gel liner and a Sonia Kashuk bent angle brush. It’s easy, any mistakes blend in to your lashline and it’s great for work!
Madelynn says
For pencil liners, when you want that bright color without the harshness, make a line across your top lashline, and smudge. it. out! Super smudge like. I tend to use UD 24/7 (surprise!) or Milani pencils because they’re super easy to work with. Use a finger, a smudge brush, anything you have on hand. Don’t smudge all of the way to the crease, but slightly extend the already drawn line. This also make color more appropriate for the office. :]
Another thing is for small/hooded eyes. I have them. Putting a solid black band across your eyelid makes it look like you have black eyeshadow all of the way across your eye. Which sucks, when you want simple makeup and not a deep eye socket look. This is where I “tightline,” or put black eyeliner ONLY on your top waterline. It take some practice, but when it’s pulled off, small eyes look defined and lovely. :]
jane says
recently, i’ve been tightlining without actually lining the upper lash line. it pulls the look together and is not so dramatic that i can’t wear it during the day.
Trisha says
Of course I’m going to enter for this! This liner looks awesome.
My trick? I hold my eyelid straight as I apply liner. I place a finger near the outside corner of my eye, and then I pull away from the eye. It straightens my lid and makes it easier to apply the liner.

Ana V says
I always set my black pencil liner with black eyeshadow. It helps the line stay more defined and it doesn’t smudge!
Lisa says
I use a skinny liner brush and gel liner to make a tiny cat-eye. It really opens up the eyes!
Fiona says
To get a smokey eye that has a gradient from the lash line upwards, use a dark eyeliner and smudge it on the lashline. The blend it out with a matching eyeshadow colour.
Izzy says
I use felt tip eyeliners! They are super easy to use, and I apply by putting the tip almost parallel to my eye instead of applying while pointing directly at my eye with the tip. This prevents wobbly lines like woah!
Christy says
Never follow established colour rules. I use green liner on my green eyes all the time, as well as red, yellow, and fuschia. Nothing is ever off limits.
Kathleen says
I put my eyeshadow on top of my liner to get the liner to set and give that extra bit of color!
Jane says
Because I’m still learning to do create nice flicks, I like to trace my line in with black eyeshadow first. Then I use this as a guide for putting on my gel or liquid liner.

Crissy says
I’m still learning, but the Sonia Kashuk bent eyeliner brush has been helpful!
Kat says
To enlarge the appearance of small eyes, I extend my top and bottom liner past the end corners of my eyes, never lining the 1/2 of the inner eyes. Also, for the bottom outer corners, I make sure not to match my lash line, but to draw just a little lower as to further enhance the illusion.
Supriya says
I use liquid eyeliner on the bottom lashes too for an all day look 🙂
Rosemary says
I’m not great at applying a steady line of eyeliner, so what I do is, apply the liner carefully, then use moisturizer and a pointed q-tip to create a crisp line. P.S. I also use moisturizer as eye makeup remover, it’s the best!
Ashwini says
My favorite tip to keep eyeliner on the waterline all day is start with something smudgy and creamy like Urban Decay Zero. Then set with a matte black e/s like Lucifer from Kat von D. Apply the e/s with a Loew Cornell 1/8 angled shader (Looove).

I always put powder over any kind of cream or pencil eyeliner to keep it from smudging!
Nadine says
I like to tightline/back my lashes for a subtle, natural eyelining look.
maguire says
my eyeliner tip is actually more of an eyeshadow tip. i love using my urban decay 24/7 liners as shadow because they blend so nicely and stay put much better than cream shadows. underground, which is taupe, is gorgeous. 🙂
Vittoria says
I love Milani eyeliner…it’s pretty cheap but it’s super waterproof. Even in the shower it doesn’t go anywhere, haha. Could be annoying but perfect for long days!

I love lining my eyes with a wet MAC 266 and dark Chanel eyeshadows.
Stephanie S. says
I pencil the line on very lightly at first, then again a bit darker, then again once or twice, keeping in mind never to go too dark or dramatic for daytime makeup. This way, the liner lasts longer and stays in place (no smudges!).

I hae tiny eyes & I like to use a really thin line of eyeliner on the top and a pop of color on the lower lash line
Lauren Sutherland says
my favorite eyeliner trick is to line my upper lashline with medium thickness line using either MAC’s Blacktrack fluidline or a liquid liner and then to take an iridescent colored liquid eyeliner like Urban decay (or a good cheap dupe is Wet ‘N Wild liquid eyeliners) and to place small dots close to my lashline. It makes your eyes POP and brings in a bit of color without being too over board! I espcially love using a turquoise similar to the color of my eyes!
Jenny says
on my waterline i use a pencil AND then a gel liner. its the greatest staying power
mary says
I use 2! First apply a bright (or lighter) shadeto the upper (and/or lower) lash line, then smudge to soften and blend. Then apply your fave black (or dark)as close to the lashline as possible– the result is color that’s not too overt, AND the dark line we love to enhance the look of our lashes! Try purple/black, green/coffee brown, aqua/navy, turquoise/brown…you get the picture. It’s a great way to wear bright color without looking overdone.
Y Shum says
I’m so excited for this giveaway! I like to use some UDPP action underneath eyeliners!
layla says
to get more control when lining my eyes, i use a really small eyeliner brush that came with another eyeliner. i find the shorter the brush is and the closer i hold it to its base, i have much more control and am able to get a really smooth line!
Kerry says
I have really round (as opposed to lovely almond shaped) eyes, so I always thought I couldn’t wear liquid liner with a cat eye flick. However, I’ve figured out that I can – IF I use a really fine brush (I use a skinny natural hair paintbrush I found at an art store) and only line the outter two-thirds of the lid. Score!
Kiran says
For a natural look, I like apply a VERY thin line of pencil liner and use the smudgy end of my eyeliner to smudge it a bit so it looks barely noticeable but gives you the definition you need, For a more dramatic look, I like to use my angled mac brush (dont know the number) and use a paintpot (any color) to line my upper lashline!
Sara says
I like to add a pop of color to my usual brown eyeliner by using a fun color, like teal, on my waterline 🙂
Megan Simpson says
For my everyday look, I apply a brown liner using Clinique’s quickliner in coffee very close to my lashline. Then, I line my water line. Next, I apply a brown shadow with an angled brush along my lashline. This will help the liner last longer. Lastly, If I want subtle smoky eyes, I bring the brown shadow color along the bottom lashes about halfway and blend. Cute!!
Christina says
When I apply my eyeliner in the morning, I usually give it a good rub to warm it up a bit, then it glides on so well on my eyelids!!!
And also, I use a shadow similar to the shade of my eyeliner to help it stay put all day 🙂 And it works wonders 😀
bagaela says
I have hooded eyelids and the outer corer of my eyes sits lower than the inner so (that makes my eypressio kinda ‘sad’ with no makeup) I use a lot of liner on the lower lashline, and apply a light color on my lids, this way my eyes look bright ad happy 🙂
Ann says
I use a brush to apply eyeshadow over my eyeliner to make it last longer
Mary Thi says
Use a lighter to warm up the pencil and use a brush to create a very sultry liner. Alternative to make cream liner, haha
Alex says
I like to keep my eyeliner on the top lid for daytime looks, but I’ll do my whole eye for evening looks. It really makes the eye pop!
Lynn says
I use an angled brush and start from the center and line it out, then I go back over it starting from my inner corner. I use a business card to wing out the liner. I go over everything with a dark eyeshadow to set it.
Maria says
I prefer to tighline my upper waterline rather than lining my lashline because it’s much more subtle and perfect for the days when you want to look more natural.
Sharon says
Smudge, smudge, smudge the eyeliner on your eyelids!! It makes it look a lot more softer.
..and then set your waterline with powder. It holds the line in place for a lot longer.
vnssa906 says
my eyeliner usually diappears from my face after a few hours… BOO! to make it last, i apply eyeshadow thinly over the eyeliner… usually in the same color family, but sometimes in another color to jazz it up 🙂 usually last way longer!
Alexandra says
i am severly liner challenged. I try and rest my elbow on a flat surface and gently tug my eyelid.
i have just bought a smashbox angled eyeliner brush,im hoping that helps me.

Hi Karen! Thanks for doing this giveaway. I’m super excited to try the greasepaint stick. Most days I only line my tightline and waterline (I use Stila kajal in Onyx), then I set it with black cake liner so it stays for days.
Natalie says
no real tips just what works for me is starting thin from the middle of my eyelid and lining with a thin brush in like a scalene triangle usually with a bright color other than black especially when my clothes aren’t very colorful or i dont want to wear any makeup.
I cant forget my urban decay primer potion though!

I love using my Urban Decay 24/7 liner in Zero. I use a smudger because oddly enough when I smudge my liner stays put longer haha
mcclain says
doing thinner liner on the upper lash line makes your eyes look bigger! plus a little wing and definition in the outer corner. love
Liza says
I’m all for white on the waterline, it makes your eyes like so much brighter.
Audrey says
I always go over any liner with a powder shadow and then always go over the shadow with a Q-tip to get the excess off. If i don’t have time to do those extra steps, I just skip eyeliner altogether! I’d rather go without liner than have to worry about smudging throughout the day.

My tip for applying eyeliner to add extra color and pop is to line the eye in two separate colors. I use a light eyeliner first and line the upper lash with a thick line. Then I take a darker color and draw a very thin line on the upper lash line just to make the eyes pop. And of course, lots of eyelash primer and then black, black mascara. I also like to add a little colored mascara to the tips of the lashes that matches the color of the eyeliner. It sounds very gawdy but if applied property, you’ll look gorgeous.
Chibu74 says
For dramatic eye look
Hold the skin of your upper lid taut, apply the liquid liner from the middle of the eye to the outside corner of the eye.
Draw a second line from the inside corner of your eye, letting the two lines meet. The outer edge of the line should be thicker than the inside. If you have close-set eyes, avoid taking the line all the way to the inside corner.
thanks for the giveaway!!

Oooooh I love MAC and eyeliner! For a soft daytime look I use an eyebrow brush to apply dark brown shadow to the outer corner of both top and bottom lashlines, about 2/3 of the way in. For added drama I swap out the shadow for a gel liner like MAC’s fluidline!
