  • The giveaway is now closed. Congrats to winner Amber! Before you go, check the home page for ongoing giveaways.

It’s a cold, gray Wednesday here in the San Francisco Bay Area, homies, and the ache in my knees tells me that rain’s a-comin’!

On the bright side, April showers bring May flowers, and perhaps even a bit of MAC. 🙂

Today’s giveaway features something water-resistant, you know, just in case it rains. MAC’s smudgy Greasepaint Stick in Slick Black is a jill of many trades, a multitasking maven unafraid of wet and wild days.

The prize

One lucky lady will win long-wearing MAC Greasepaint Stick in Slick Black, a creamy black eye crayon ($18 value) that works well as a liner, a shadow or even as a base for powder eyeshadows (busts out some FABOOLICIOUS smokey eyes).

How to enter…

2ways2enterEntering is easy. There are two different ways, and you can do both of them for two chances to win.

First, you can enter by leaving a comment at the bottom of this post. In it, share one or more of your favorite eyeliner tips/tricks.

To get a soft, barely-there liner look that puts the focus on your eyes, 🙂 dot the lash lines with an eyeliner pencil, and smudge the dots together with an applicator sponge.

P.S. So much yummy MAC goodness to look forward to, ladies! Tomorrow Pret a Papier, already available online, drops on counters. To put it mildly, I’m stoked.

And I can’t wait for the new Superglass glosses ($18 each). Those boogie on down to MAC counters on May 6.

MAC says the nine glosses are even more blinged-out than their super-sparkly Dazzleglass line, and they used something they call “snowflake-shaped helicone pearls” to ramp up the sparkle while NOT ramping up the grit. We’ll see!

From top: Cherry Electric (a bright cherry pink), Disco Blend (a light tan), Fab Frenzy (a deep blueish purple), Gift Wrap (a light pinkish peach), Sugar Overload (a beige-y white), Superflash! (a mid-tone yellowish pink), Sweet Tart (a pale baby pink), Totally Bang! (fuchsia), Tunnel of Love (a deep blueish brown)

For gel eyeliner, I LOVE the SK Bent Eyeliner brush. It makes it so quick and foolproof, works even better than my Bobbi Brown eyeliner brush, but it’s sooooo much cheaper.

I use a skinny angle brush, the one I got is a travel size brush from sephora. I love using my Stila eye Kajal with this brush since the liner is so creamy.

This also works good as a smoky eye base.

i use waterproof pencils and then gently soften the line with a dry clean lip brush. the skinny tip (but not as skinny as an eyeliner brush) softens the lines perfectly. Urban Decay, Make up forever and NYC make really good waterproof eye pencils. I’m definitely interested in trying the MAC

I usually wear black liquid eyeliner on my top lid. I start off at the center of my lashline then extend it out and give it a bit of a wing at the outer corner. I then go back and start at the inner corner of my upper lashline and draw a line to meet up at the center of my lid where i first started. It makes it easier for me that way since its thicket on the outer side of my lid and thinner towards my nose.

After applying eyeliner on my bottom lid, I always use a q-tip and dip some loose translucent powder and swipe it right below my eyeliner. This prevents smudging. Also, I like to use eyeliners as an eyeshadow, especially if I’m in a hurry. I love Urban Decay’s 24/7 liners because they are so creamy and stay on your lid all day long.

To do an easy smokey eye – I use a black paint/smudge pot and very evenly apply it all over the lid. I usually just use my fingertips to apply and blend. I may either use a primer beforehand or not. Once done, I would get a fluffy eyeshadow brush, grab some bright green or bright blue pigment and gently pat it over the paint. Quick, easy, not overdone!!!

I don’t know if this can really be considered a trick/tip, but I’ve found that if I line my lower lashline with a brown eye shadow just a little darker than my skin, it makes my eyes look a lot bigger. And since the shadow shouldn’t be too dark in comparison to your skin tone, it’s pretty much impossible to mess up ^_^

Then I lightly but firmly draw a line. Retrace line if it’s too light. Plus it always helps to keep a sharp point on the eyeliner pencil.

My eyes are pretty small, so I seldom apply eyeliner on my waterline (it makes my eyes look smaller). Instead, I use either a small angled brush or just a pencil, and I apply it to the outer corner of my eye. Then, I make sure to smudge it a lot, so it looks effortless and more natural. To go from day to night, I apply eyeliner as close as possible to my upper lash line (I rest the pencil on the lashes, so it glides seamlessly), and I smudge it a little. A little eyeliner can go a long way!

This season is ALL about the greasy, shiny smokey eye! I prep my entire lids with “Painterly” PP with my finger only. The warmth allows you to smudge out the tiniest amount which is imperative under the greasepaint sticks. I then color in a bloch area starting at my lash line (about 1cm thick) and smudge out blending brush. Then use a small amount of vaseline on a brush and draw along the upper lash line and smudge out. Surprisingly, it doesn’t feel sticky, it doesn’t crease and looks so up to date!

For smudgeless (or at least less smudgey) eyeliner, always always always buy waterproof! It doesn’t matter if you’re going to a sad movie or not: this stuff stays put way longer than the regular stuff. Also, to get a super smooth line, pull the eyelid taught once closed and then draw your line.

I always have to remind myself to slow down at this part. usually after applying eyeshadow I’m starting to think, hey I have a lot of other stuff I need to be doing so I can leave the house in ten more minutes. So relax, stop, and do it right- ’cause you’ll only take longer if you don’t ; )

to make my eyes look much wider, I only apply eyeliner on the outer half or outer third of my eye on the bottom and the outer third on my top and smudge it all out. Thennn I use a peachy nude eyeliner on the inner half in the water line and on the bottom lash line and smudge that 🙂

To get a slight wing with a pencil liner, line the top lashline, slightly extending past outer edge, and then, using a clean fingertip to barely touch the edge of your conjuctiva, go upward (almost like you are rubbing the line upward). Go over the lines with a coordinating shadow to set. This is how I achieve symmetry!

well it’s not really a trick but for me it is… i’m asian so to make my eyes appear bigger i elongate my liner past the end/ corner of my eyes. NOT too much though or it will be noticible but just a little more than where my eye naturally ends. i also take my eyeshadow out that far too so it looks normal. LOL. normal?

also, when lining my eyes (everyday) i start the line very thin at inner corner and as i continue to the other end of my eye, i widen the line. so it’s a gradual increase in the thickness of the liner. i like how it gives a (false) full lash look.

On days when I don’t want to have to say “eyes up here buddy!” I use two colors of eyeliner – one on the top and one on the bottom. I tightline the top with the unusual color, usually a dark navy or eggplant or brown, and then line the inner rim of my lower lash line with the black pencil (which for my dark complexion is “normal”, but I would assume for someone fairer than me could be brown as well). It draws attention to the eyes in a subtle way! And since very little about me is subtle, I can use that.

Try brown instead of black, both as an eyeliner and in the waterline, and it’ll soften up the effect while still providing focus to your eyes.

For bottom eyeliner I just use Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil, and after smudging dip a q-tip in liquid makeup remover and swipe, creating a clean line that doesn’t smudge because of the barrier that the makeup remover creates.

When smudging big areas of liner (like greasepaint sticks) over the eyelid to use as a base for shadow, I love to use Sephora’s silicone “glitter shadow” applicator brush. The head of the brush is a triangle of silicone which leaves the product on your lids instead of in bristles or on your fingers.

For pencil liners, when you want that bright color without the harshness, make a line across your top lashline, and smudge. it. out! Super smudge like. I tend to use UD 24/7 (surprise!) or Milani pencils because they’re super easy to work with. Use a finger, a smudge brush, anything you have on hand. Don’t smudge all of the way to the crease, but slightly extend the already drawn line. This also make color more appropriate for the office. :]
Another thing is for small/hooded eyes. I have them. Putting a solid black band across your eyelid makes it look like you have black eyeshadow all of the way across your eye. Which sucks, when you want simple makeup and not a deep eye socket look. This is where I “tightline,” or put black eyeliner ONLY on your top waterline. It take some practice, but when it’s pulled off, small eyes look defined and lovely. :]

To enlarge the appearance of small eyes, I extend my top and bottom liner past the end corners of my eyes, never lining the 1/2 of the inner eyes. Also, for the bottom outer corners, I make sure not to match my lash line, but to draw just a little lower as to further enhance the illusion.

I’m not great at applying a steady line of eyeliner, so what I do is, apply the liner carefully, then use moisturizer and a pointed q-tip to create a crisp line. P.S. I also use moisturizer as eye makeup remover, it’s the best!

My favorite tip to keep eyeliner on the waterline all day is start with something smudgy and creamy like Urban Decay Zero. Then set with a matte black e/s like Lucifer from Kat von D. Apply the e/s with a Loew Cornell 1/8 angled shader (Looove).

I pencil the line on very lightly at first, then again a bit darker, then again once or twice, keeping in mind never to go too dark or dramatic for daytime makeup. This way, the liner lasts longer and stays in place (no smudges!).

my favorite eyeliner trick is to line my upper lashline with medium thickness line using either MAC’s Blacktrack fluidline or a liquid liner and then to take an iridescent colored liquid eyeliner like Urban decay (or a good cheap dupe is Wet ‘N Wild liquid eyeliners) and to place small dots close to my lashline. It makes your eyes POP and brings in a bit of color without being too over board! I espcially love using a turquoise similar to the color of my eyes!

I use 2! First apply a bright (or lighter) shadeto the upper (and/or lower) lash line, then smudge to soften and blend. Then apply your fave black (or dark)as close to the lashline as possible– the result is color that’s not too overt, AND the dark line we love to enhance the look of our lashes! Try purple/black, green/coffee brown, aqua/navy, turquoise/brown…you get the picture. It’s a great way to wear bright color without looking overdone.

I have really round (as opposed to lovely almond shaped) eyes, so I always thought I couldn’t wear liquid liner with a cat eye flick. However, I’ve figured out that I can – IF I use a really fine brush (I use a skinny natural hair paintbrush I found at an art store) and only line the outter two-thirds of the lid. Score!

For a natural look, I like apply a VERY thin line of pencil liner and use the smudgy end of my eyeliner to smudge it a bit so it looks barely noticeable but gives you the definition you need, For a more dramatic look, I like to use my angled mac brush (dont know the number) and use a paintpot (any color) to line my upper lashline!

For my everyday look, I apply a brown liner using Clinique’s quickliner in coffee very close to my lashline. Then, I line my water line. Next, I apply a brown shadow with an angled brush along my lashline. This will help the liner last longer. Lastly, If I want subtle smoky eyes, I bring the brown shadow color along the bottom lashes about halfway and blend. Cute!!

My tip for applying eyeliner to add extra color and pop is to line the eye in two separate colors. I use a light eyeliner first and line the upper lash with a thick line. Then I take a darker color and draw a very thin line on the upper lash line just to make the eyes pop. And of course, lots of eyelash primer and then black, black mascara. I also like to add a little colored mascara to the tips of the lashes that matches the color of the eyeliner. It sounds very gawdy but if applied property, you’ll look gorgeous.

    For dramatic eye look

Hold the skin of your upper lid taut, apply the liquid liner from the middle of the eye to the outside corner of the eye.

Draw a second line from the inside corner of your eye, letting the two lines meet. The outer edge of the line should be thicker than the inside. If you have close-set eyes, avoid taking the line all the way to the inside corner.

    thanks for the giveaway!!
