A Makeup and Beauty Blog giveaway
Comment to win a Sephora eGift card

Whenever I play Maroon 5 in my office Tabs runs out of the room (he will hang out for Biggie though, LOL!). I’m telling you this because I can’t get that Payphone song out of my head, and I’ve been listening to it repeatedly, much to Tabs’ chagrin.

El Hub came home singing it the other day, and now it seems like we don’t go 20 minutes before one of us starts, “I’m at a payphone…”

Tabs has not been thrilled. :)

I’ve been trying to remember the last time I actually used a payphone, and I think it might’ve been around 1993. Hard to believe there was a time when you couldn’t easily get a hold of people 24 hours a day, isn’t it?

Now, I feel weird whenever I’m without my iPhone. Although, truth be told, I use my phone more to take pics of my cat than I do to speak with people, haha!

I just don’t have the patience to sit and talk on the phone for long periods of time anymore, not that I’m a bigger fan of texting, especially when it comes to sharing important news or well-wishes, like “Happy birthday!” or “Merry Christmas!” For things like that, I think you still gotta pick up the phone.

A single gal pal of mine tells me that texting is the big thing now in dating. She says that when boys ask her out, they always do it via text.

I don’t know if I could handle that if I were single. I mean, what if you met a really cute, great guy who texted terribly? I’m not down for dudes who send texts like, “C U 2NITE!” Please, I beg you, take the extra 5 seconds to spell out your words. Please.

Then again, I broke up with a guy once because he used ellipses at the end of every sentence in his emails… (I know I use them a lot, too…and I purposefully leave off that fourth dot at the end of sentences.)

I’ll say this about El Hub: the boy gives GREAT email.

I’ve been out of the dating game for a while, so I’m curious — what’s it like nowadays? For the single gals (and guys), do you think it’s easier or tougher to find a decent date? Does technology help or hinder dating?

Before you go, don’t forget to enter today’s Sephora eCard giveaway. I’m gonna go grab a second cup of coffee now. Be right back.

What folks are saying…

“Thanks so much, Karen. Just in case you were wondering what I got with it, I decided to go with the Clarisonic Mia–I’ve been wanting it for years now, but have never purchased it because of the price. Your eCard helped me finally buy it! I look forward to using it. Thanks again!”
-Jane

“Shut the front door! OMG Karen, you have made my day. :) I’m sick in bed with the flu and this has just cheered me up immensely!!!!!!!! BTW, I’m the one that sent you that pic of my pug in a wig a few weeks back LOL! Thanks again, honestly, I’m beyond giddy right now.”
-Angel

“Oh my goodness! Thank you so much Karen (and Tabs, of course)! I really appreciate this! I’d been eyeing the Anastasia brow pencil in Strawburn to match my red hair!”
-Chelsea (and Jiji the kitten and Quincy the bunny)

“Never before have I been so pleased to check my email right before bed!!! Thank you so, so much! I truly enjoy your blog and check it almost daily! Thanks again! This made my night!”
-Melissa, Edmond, OK

“Hi Karen. Oh my goodness! I can’t believe I won! :O Thank you so much! You, Tabs, and your blog are amazing! Thank you for keeping me updated on all things beauty and more importantly, for keeping me entertained! Keep doing your thing! :) Thank you again.”
-Jacqueline

“Hi Karen. Thank you so much, I’m so excited, I’ve never won anything before. My name is Hana … I just turned 25 (today is my birthday!) Yay! Thank you.”
-Hana

My worst date was where dude asked me out (and this was in my 20s), and at a dinner of fish and chips no less wanted to split the dinner and couldn’t afford to even by a drink to go with. Now it’s one thing if it’s agreed your both broke but I didn’t even know this was the deal… I didn’t want to make him feel bad so I went along with it but suffice to say that was our last date ;-(

  6. Shawna says:

I think dating is tougher these days. Reason said, the social networks and todays society leaves no room for someone to really get to know another person on a face to face level, or just by having a nice lunch or dinner. Everything is either done by facebook, or via texting. No bueno!

  7. Abigail Camarillo says:

Some beauty shopping this weekend, yes!

  26. Amanda Sakovitz says:

I’ve been with my boyfriend for over 5 years. I had a huge crush on him all through middle school and high school. I don’t think he even knew I was alive at the time although he says he did lol. It only took us 6 years after graduating high school to finally get together!

  30. Lesleyk says:

My BF and I have been together eight years now. I can’t even remember what a date was like, we so lazy and comfortable at this point. Although the first weekend meeting and staying with his parents was pretty interesting when their Dalmatian bit my face. 911, ambulance ride, 13 stitches — it was pretty memorable.

I actually prefer texting to talking these days, BUT if you’re a terrible speller, call, lol. I like to spell words out and use perfect English in texts. :-)

My best date has been with my 3 year old daughter .. She loves makeup and clothes and yesterday we were together at Nars counter at Sephora .. I tried Nars Schiap and she beamed “” Mumma, it’s awesome” .. Though I found it too much on me, but I still bought it .. Love makes you do crazy things.. We had vanilla cup with banana ice creams .. I also bought her 5 sundresses .. Ready to hit the beach and I’m definitely wearing Schiap today !!

  37. kim says:

The best date ive ever been on was a blind folded car trip to monterey bay aquarium, then walking around the beach boardwalk and ending at a nice restaurant by the pier with a beautiful view of the ocean :)

  38. Marian says:

The worst date I was ever on was a blind date. My best friend fixed me up with a jockey! I am 5’9″ and of course I wore heels because we were going dancing!
The best date I ever had was with a really sweet boy who borrowed his brother’s Corvette to impress me. It was a stick shift and he couldn’t drive it so we lurched and bumped during the whole ride. After a late movie, he pulled over to a park and opened his trunk. Inside was a picnic basket full of food, (that he made himself) a bottle of wine. We had a romantic midnight picnic! I found his thoughtfulness and desire to impress me so charming and will never forget him.

  39. DalaLuz says:

I love dancing in my kitchen on Maroon 5 :)

  40. Jane says:

I’ve only gone out on one date… and it was the worst. ugh

  51. Vicki says:

I am so excited to be home for a holiday weekend for once! No sitting in traffic for hours! Just had Indian food, now I’m going to catch up on some housework.

  52. Katie says:

I didn’t even have to think about the worst date I’ve ever been on. When I was in high school, my boyfriend took me to a junkyard to find some parts for his car! The worst part is that I didn’t immediately break up with him after shenanigans like that!

  53. lala r says:

    thanks for the giveaway

  54. Jennifer says:

I don’t like shopping on Saturdays – the stores are too crowded.

  55. Agata says:

Hi Karen! Your posts are always so entertaining. I love that even when you don’t write about beauty, you are so funny. Thanks for that!

I haven’t dated in a while either, I have been married for over two years and have been with my husband for 6 years. But I always loved the first dates, choosing perfect outfit and such :)

I hope to win that gift card, so many beautiful things I’d buy from Sephora. Maybe the new perfume we talked about? :)

  56. Lydia says:

The worst date I have ever been on was with a guy from okcupid.com where he couldn’t hold a conversation whatsoever and it was so awkward. haha

  57. Megan says:

Poor Tabs! Maroon 5 is an acquired taste.

  58. Denise says:

Worst date I ever had was back in college days. It was a fix up and he called me by the wrong name all night. I would correct him and he’d get it right once then go back to the other name. Clearly he had someone else on his mind. lol

  59. Sara says:

I had been dating my bf for several months but he hadn`t still met my frieds. They even made fun of me saying that it was actually an imaginary guy! At last he agreed to come for dinner, but half an hour earlier he called me to say he had an inexpected family thing and was really sorry but he couldn’t make it. 5 mins later I received a text that was obviously not for me “Hi!I’ll be there in 20. What movie do you feel like?”
Sooooo sometimes technology is a hinder, I guess.
    Muah!

  60. Stephanie Fraval says:

I never shorten words when texting, even if it means a paragraph!

  61. Debbie Cassis says:

A dark brown smokey eye (I use NARS Coconut Grove) is always a great way to make my eyes look sultry! :D

  62. Heidi says:

A deal breaker, not going to have a second date type thing would be if a man is too attached to his phone to focus on having a face to face conversation during a date. Yes, I’ve had that happen over dinner dates. Uh, if you really need to be communicating with this other person, why aren’t you having dinner with THEM????

  63. Avery says:

    I graduated last night!

  64. Zhar says:

Fantastic post as always =) I don’t think that technology has hindered the dating process. I actually think it has made it easier to figure out if the guy’s right or not. As far as texting goes, one of my pet peeves is that people in general don’t spell out all their words, I also don’t like abbreviations when it’s not necessary to do so.

  65. Marisa says:

Worst date ever was when I was 20 and I met a guy who told me he was 20……by the end of our first date he revealed he was 17…….almost.

  66. Alli says:

I’m always excited about your lower-priced makeup reviews. Stuff by Chanel is just out of my price range, and I love to see what drugstore stuff is actually worth getting.

  67. CarolD says:

Worst date: I ended up paying for dinner AND he had the guts to ask for gas money. This is a mid 20′s man! Boy is more fitting. For shame.

  68. Rikki says:

I’m leaving for California next Friday.

  69. Judy says:

  77. Nicole says:

I saw an event for MAC’s sailor collection at the mall yesterday!

  78. Christine says:

I met a guy about a week or two weeks ago, and we exchanged Facebook information. He messaged me later that day, and I had to shut it down. His typing skills were embarrassing. Call me shallow, but it’s just a sign of intelligence I look for in guys these days.

  79. Cristy says:

I’m happy bc my hub is going to San Diego for work next sat and I’m sticking to him! he’s not going alone! :) woot woot!!!!

  80. Tiffanie says:

I’m so glad I don’t have to worry about dating anymore!

  81. Rachel B. says:

I know! About the texting and not spelling the entire word! I mean, the entire keyboard is right there, right? I’m with you on this. As for the ellipses ….

  82. sweeks1980 says:

I couldn’t date someone who are rude/demanding to others. It is a total dealbreaker for me.

  85. Step says:

I went on a surprise date once. He took me to a rodeo. They were selling confederate flags in the little gift kiosk. My shoes got totally ruined. Pretty much a mess all around.

  86. auroragyps says:

My worst date was the icing on a crappy day. It was during Summer break in HS and I was already bummed because my favorite actor was leaving my favorite soap (I’ve only ever watch one soap, Santa Barbara). I was woken up around 5am ( loved sleeping late during the Summer) by my mom telling me that she accidentally slit her wrist getting the last of the mustard out of a squeeze container, so I had to get up so we could go to the hospital. So, after all that was taken care of & I was home that afternoon, I told my boyfriend & he decided to treat me to a surprise date. His dad blew the surprise while he was driving us to the bowling alley to meet up with a couple of my girlfriends & my boyfriend’s brother & his friend. Just one thing: I do not bowl. So we three girls just hung out in our dink town’s bowling alley (BORING!), while the guys bowled. Plus, it turned out my clueless boyfriend was horrible at bowling, so I don’t know what the heck he was thinking with the whole thing. What a crappy ending to a crappy day.

  94. Danielle says:

My worst date was probably back in high school (it was a first date too) and we went to a movie theater and everything was going fine until two drunk fools decided to get loud and boisterous and then one of them vomited all over. They had to stop the movie and clear everybody out. lol. Fun times!

So I rarely use abbreviations when I text now, lol.

You wanna know something scary? …I don’t think I’ve ever been on a date. I can’t remember the last time I was single… 15 maybe? I guess I’m just a weird, long-term relationship person. I always wonder what the whole single dating scene is like. TV and movies make it seem fun, but I’m sure it’s kind of scary and lonely, too. Anyway! Hope you’re having a great weekend!

  122. Melissa says:

I’ve been in a relationship for going on 5yrs and we have a kid together. I haven’t been on official date for forever. My bf hates calling it a ” date” when we do get alone time for some reason.

I’ve never been on a date or in a relationship before, and I’m just fine with it. I simply have no interest in it right now, since I’m too busy focusing on school. I’ve never been the girl who’s dying to have a boyfriend, and my family’s never pushed my sisters or me into dating. (In fact, my family’s glad that my sisters and I aren’t boy-crazy.)

Maybe when I finish school and settle into my career, I might start dating.

  128. Daniella says:

One of the best dates I had happened recently: a man that I thought was going to be the shyest in the world turned out to be uh, not shy after all, and was in fact as romantic and passionate as the day is long. I was very pleasantly surprised!

  131. Ruchita says:

I’ve been out of the dating scene for 13 years! I don’t know if I could handle the scene these days. I’d probably end up (more of) a crazy cat lady than I am. :-)

  132. KPrice says:

So glad to be happily married to a great guy. One who’s helping me in the yard today plant the veggie and herb garden. (and who understands when I have to go to Sephora – which I’m sure I’ll have to soon) Have a good long weekend and thanks for a chance at a giveaway!

  133. Laura says:

I used to think technology hinders dating, but when my friends convinced me to try okcupid, I met a great guy!

  134. Advah says:

Just back from a BBQ in the park with friends – it’s stupidly warm here today! :)

  135. type1gal says:

  136. aclearcutsign says:

Got out of a long relationship a year ago, and now loving being single! A girl just needs a break, ya know?

  137. Janelle says:

My worst date was a dinner whose conversation was terribly awkward. I had to work to make the conversation flow. Example:

Me: …So, do you have any siblings?
    Him: Yes.
    (Silence)
    Me: …How many?

Forty minutes elapsed before I could no longer take it!

  138. Sara P. says:

I LOVE 30 Rock!! and that was a great episode!

  139. C Williams says:

In Jesus name I am gonna win!!

  140. Amie F says:

I just got a new (to me) Nars duo called Violetta. It is gorgeous!

  141. indy J says:

I’m going to be celebrating my first year of being single next month! I had been out of the dating game for 5 years – and yes, it was a little difficult at first. Technology can actually be a boost in the dating game – it makes it easier to remember who you made plans with ;)

  142. Kelsey says:

What was the worst date you’ve ever been on? And the best date?
My husband and I differ on this. The first movie we went to see together as a couple was “Waking Ned Divine”,which I loved, and he hated. However this was when we had our first kiss, so in the end we both agreed that it was a success! :)

  143. Jennifer says:

    So glad it’s a 3 day weekend!

  144. Alix says:

So warm and muggy here in the Northeast!

  145. Annaham says:

Favorite date night look is a simple, neutral eye (say, UD’s Underground with Bourbon 24/7 liner) with a bright lip color (MAC Color Saturation has been my go-to for the latter as of late!).

  146. Paige says:

Best date was when my hubs and I were dating. We were at a fancy-schmancy restaurant, and he decided to order milk to drink with dessert. The server was completely caught off guard, but we ended up with milk served in wine glasses :)

  147. Suzi says:

Wearing Macs all that glitters today

  148. Talya says:

    sephora!

  149. Theresa says:

I actually want to try dating. I’ve only had one boyfriend in my life and he was my friend haha. Now that we are broken up I want to have that first date experience.

  150. Melissa says:

My worst date ever is when I went out with a guy who was such a close friend that we were like brother and sister. We were both single at one point and decided hey…why not try dating. Bad…very, very, bad idea LOL. We only went out once.

  151. Lucas says:

I am currently engaged to the most beautiful girl in the world and I could not be any luckier, I adore you Laura!

  152. Monika says:

My best date was when my current boyfriend took me out before he went home for the summer. We weren’t even together yet, but he wanted to hang out before he left. I told him to surprise me and he ended up taking me to the park on a really nice, sunny day. We sat by the pond and talked for awhile. It felt like I was in some cheesy chick flick, but I had a great time!

  153. Laura says:

My first date with my soon to be husband (yay!!!) was AMAZING!!! We both lived in London (UK) back then (we now live in California) and it all started as friends. He took me out for dinner to this really romantic restaurant close to the river and after dinner we took a long walk until we got to the Big Ben and then went to my place for some drinks, we talked all night and made out a little. He was such a gentleman! that’s why we are still together and getting married :)

  154. chibicheeks says:

worst date ever: I had just been dumped by my boyfriend and went with another guy to go see “The Breakup”. Cried my eyes out the entire time.

  155. ashleigh says:

Hopefully I win this week! Fingers crossed:)

  156. MJ says:

I sort of feel like all of my dating experiences didn’t really happen until after I got into a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship with them since I’ve never used dating as a means of getting to know someone. I’ve always ended up with people that I already knew and us getting to know each other never really happened during formal dates but more through just hanging out with mutual friends and what not.

Currently in a relationship with my first boyfriend. However, we didn’t really get here without a lot of trouble. XD Broke up, pretty much hated each others guts, I dated other people for several years, and now we’re back together again after both of us grew up a bit. And now we’re kinda hovering around in that “not engaged-yay engaged!” state of limbo. :3

  157. Mina says:

    I wanna win girl!

  160. Arrianna says:

Hey there and happy Memorial Day! I’m an EMS provider on duty this weekend. The morning makeup routine so often has to go right out the window in the wake of busy nights, so when I get the time to pretty up I treasure it. Thanks for the contest!

  161. Ceci says:

The best date in the world was my first date with my best friend. We saw Knight and Day together.

  162. Hannah S. says:

Been weeding the yard and consequently going thru my sunscreen about 5 times the normal rate. Yay for nice weather though!

  163. Nina T says:

BEST DATE EVER: first date with my now hubby. We started out walking around some shops and having dinner together…then we literally danced all night!! He was and still is the sweetest gentleman! Got home at 6 in the morning and knew I was hooked!

  164. karen says:

I’ve never really been on a normal date (get asked out, go out on date, wait around to see if he’ll call). All my relationships have kind of gone from “we’re hanging out” directly to “we’re together” without all the first date stuff I see on TV. I have asked a guy out though… the most significant time was in 11th grade. I asked a guy that I was friendly with and had a huge crush on to go to junior prom with me. He said he’d tell me after spring break (wha?), but we did end up going together.

  165. Kay says:

That’s so weird!!! I literally just read another blog entry where someone said they couldn’t stop listening to Payphone and I was listening to it when I read this blog entry. Haha what a coincidence!

  166. bin du says:

decided to do a big purge of my makeup collection, use up some things that have just been laying around, toss really old stuff and donate/giveaway back-ups of products I no-longer life. So cathardic and now I don’t feel so bad for the makeup haul i’m planning in a couple days!

  167. mn says:

I don’t think I would be thrilled to get an invite for a first date via a text msg- I just wouldn’t accept the offer. Am I considered too ‘old school’ ?

  168. Dovey says:

  173. Amanda G says:

I’m going on a date tonight to a fondue place! Relationship status is… fuzzy, but may be more clear after the date?

  174. Mary says:

Well, it wasn’t the worst date I’ve ever been on, but it was certainly the worst breakup. I had an ex-boyfriend call out his World of Warcraft character’s name in bed.

  184. Ris says:

I haven’t been on a date in ages, and I’m okay with that. I will admit to being a little jealous of the cute couples who come into the jewelry shop I work in to order engagement rings, though. :D

  185. Ginelle says:

Happy Saturday! I’m single. I like being independent and being able to do my own thing. The only time I hate being single is when there is a bug/spider in the house & I have to be the one to kill it. The worst is a roach. Gag, throw up. Oh and the only other time it sucks is when people are coupled up and think therefore you should be with someone. Like somehow you are not complete unless you are with someone or they try to hook you up with someone just because they are “nice”. Ok that maybe true, but there’s got to be something more than just “nice’ & oh nice on the outside does not equal nice on the inside!

    Have a great weekend!

I used a payphone at a 7-11 late last year. We were amazed that there are a few working payphones left. I think we should still have them as an emergency backup in case something major happens to cell phone towers.

  238. Barbara says:

I’ve been married for 19 years! Can’t imagine dating today . Back in the day you weren’t available 24/7 like now.

  239. Joy says:

M worst date was actually in some ways my best. Long story short: my date was running for political office. We met while both working booths at a trade show. Essentially, the first date was a nice dinner where he paid, and also vetted me. He was pretty much making sure that I wouldn’t have any awkward/bad stories/skeletons come out during a campaign, that I wouldn’t be a liability. So on one hand, it made for a bad date in that it was almost a job interview. But at least there was no pretension of getting involved and then breaking up because I wouldn’t pass muster as a political wife. Props for knowing what he wanted/needed, being a gentleman, etc… Maybe could have waited for the second date though. :-)

  272. Beth says:

Dating deal breaker – bad grammar. Either in speech or written form.

  273. Nicole says:

I love that Payphone song, too. Best date was my second date with my now-husband. We took a long ride on his Harley and he got a tattoo that he let me help him design. I knew even then that there was something different about him in a really good way. Just a few more weeks until our one year anniversary.

  274. Rachel says:

While I am happily married now, I did have a pretty horrible date while I was out searching…

I had met this guy, a friend of a friend, at college and he seemed pretty nice and normal. However, when he showed up at the bar for our date, he was dressed like a… well, I don’t even know what he was trying to do! He was a really thin Indian guy, but he had on these HUGE jeans – he could have fit 3 of himself in each leg – plus a super-baggy baseball jersey, an upside-down visor, big honkin’ gold chain with a ginormous eagle pendant, and a big chunk of diamond in his ear. He also acted like a totally different person! I was so confused!! He then proceeded to get really drunk and be a jerk. Fortunately I ran into a friend and had him come back to the table with me. I went to the bathroom and came back to find my drunk friend dancing on the table and my date slapping his ass! I decided I’d had enough and left. I got an email from the guy a few days later, saying he really didn’t want to be in a relationship with me, but would I willing to be friends with benefits?!?! REALLY?!?!?

I can laugh about it now, but WOW, the nerve of some guys!!!

  275. Darlene says:

Don’t you just hate it when you go on a date, and the guy is checking out other girls as they walk by? So disrespectful :( Definitely a date deal breaker. Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone!

  277. Ellie says:

Ever since I started doing activist stuff related to things like feminism and queer theory, I haven’t been able to date normally. Like, I can rage about how guys are always the ones who pay on dates and buy gifts for their girlfriends, seemingly expecting nothing in return. Until he expects the girl to have sex with him whenever he wants to, completely ignoring what her desires are, as though this is a right he gets for being a “good boyfriend”. I don’t get why it irks me so much. Maybe these kinds of heteronormative gender roles make me feel like a prostitute.

  278. Liz says:

The worst date I was ever on: he took me to Olive Garden and he ate his food with his fingers.

  279. Ann says:

    I’m baking muffins today!

  280. My first date was awkward. I didn’t even know it was a date. I went to see the X-Files film in the cinema and all-of-a-sudden the guy I was with starting trying to grasp my hand in his clammy fingers. Yeuch. :-D

The best date I’ve ever been on was just recently for my fiancé and I 5 year anniversary. We’ve known each other since we were 9 years old, but didn’t get together until 5 years ago. We went out to dinner then when we came home, he surprised me with a beautiful ring in front of our kids. (I had one from a previous relationship, she’s 7 yo, and we have 2 together, 3 yo and 10 mos. all girls, bless his heart LOL)

  293. Crystal says:

I don’t have any truly HORRIBLE date stories, but there was the one where the dude couldn’t come up with a good date idea, so we decided to meet for coffee and decide from there. Then, of course, we spent like half an hour saying, “Soooo, what should we do?”

This is why I have cats.

my current relationship status is epically long distance, until probably the end of this year.. it makes me really sad, but hopefully it’ll be for the best until I get into school. haven’t seen my boyfriend since February, maybe he’ll be able to visit or something before I can go see him :

I’ve been out of the dating game for a little while. I remember my first date with the husband involved liberal amounts of frosty blue eye shadow and frosty pink lipstick. He still fell for me.

Hugs to you and the Tabster!

Happily co-habitating with the man of my dreams…who will soon become my husband at a surprise wedding we’re having at our graduation party! Yes,I know that Zuckerburg guy did it too, but we started planning before his bidness came out on the news (can’t say that I’m not annoyed, though). Regardless, I’m so excited!

my friend set me up with a guy she swore was just perfect for me- he drank a bottle and a half of wine at dinner, scotch afterwards, smoked cigars, and then tried to kiss me, slurring his way thru all sorts of reasons why we were meant for each other. i finally couldn’t take it any longer and told him I would be taking a cab home and i hoped that he would also take a cab. he followed me home and knocked on my door making all sorts of unintelligible excuses for why he should be allowed in. he was too drunk to drive, too annoying to deal with and a friend of a friend. i offered to call him a cab just before he passed out on my front porch. the next morning, i woke him up by turning on the sprinklers. my friend called me later to say he thought i was a bitch but wanted to go out again? not in your booze soaked dreams buddy
