I have done my share of weird things in the name of beauty.
Case in point: the time I turned into a lion and wandered the streets of San Francisco.
But there are things I won’t do, like snail slime… I’m not doin’ that.
When it was so trendy a few years ago, I almost considered it, since it was supposed to turn back the hands of time, but I just couldn’t do it. I have snails in my garden, and I kept thinking, snail butts, snail butts, snail butts… Ew.
And even though I’m always moaning and groaning about my short, stubby lashes, I’ve also never tried any real deal lash growth products like Latisse.
I know they work for a lot of people, but I’m a little freaked out by the idea of applying hair growth products so close to my eyes.
And then there’s cosmetic surgery… I am personally deathly afraid of knives, but I’ve seen cosmetic surgery done on some people, and it totally works for them. I figure, do what makes you feel good about yourself. End of story.
How about you? Are there any things you won’t do in the name of beauty?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

LOL! Oh, Karen, only you would have the courage to run around San Francisco as a lion. I would never, unfortunately! 😛
(Okay, maybe. Maybe I could have a tail, too. And a mane.)
I’d never be able to do a slime facial with my fear of bugs-and-squishy-things, but maybe a fish pedicure, if I HAD to! And definitely nothing with as high of a risk profile as Latisse.
Er, I guess there’s probably actually a lot that I wouldn’t do in the name of beauty. But that’s okay, you know? There’s still so much left that I can and WILL do! 😀

I’ve never had a “professional” fish pedicure (never thought I’d say those words! :D), but while I was swimming in the sea on holiday, I encountered tiny fish that would eat the dead skin of your feet, if you just stood still long enough. It felt like pinpricks of pressure and afterwards, my feet felt like new. I quite liked it.
Eesha says
LoL… running like a Lion in San Francisco.
Well, I probably can never get a fish pedicure thing done on myself. That sounds too scary and unhygienic to me, eww…but, that’s my personal opinion as it’s quite a rage these days.

You made a cute lion!
I don’t think I’ll ever go to a tanning salon. As much as I enjoy the sun and a bit of color, lying down on a tanning bed seems like an overkill. Plus I’m really pretty sure it’s not too healthy.
Laure says
Agreed! No way I’d voluntarily go to a tanning salon. Tanning beds kind of freak me out, my sister has warned me about the perils of tanning salons too many times and when I was in my teens, I suffered from some second dregree burns on my shoulders, as well as a heat stroke. 🙁 So I’m really careful with the spending time in the sun, let alone going to a tanning salon.
I’ve used snail gel, but I can’t remember ever using it on my face. I used to put it on scars and dry patches and it really calms down your skin and fades your scars. It’s very nice. 🙂
Laure says
Btw Karen, I absolutely love the picture!

I’ve always stayed away from the whole blood facial thing. I have a feeling it’d just give my skin a red pigment.
doroffee says
Well, well, well…
-that fish pedicure thing – it would be too bizarre to see fishes munching on my skin
-drinking my own urine for nicer skin – it is legitly believed by some people… yuck.
-getting my ribs taken out for a sleeker figure… just no.
-any bird poop/whatever poop facial I have read about in some articles
-any beauty surgery done on my face (unless I get into a really nasty accident) – that just would not be me anymore. Also botox. Never. It’s against my principles.
doroffee says
Oh, and tanning salons… actually, whatever tanning. I like my skin fair/light, and tanning beds can actually cause skin cancer, and I don’t wanna risk that.
Chris25 says
I agree with you about plastic surgery and Latisse. I can understand the desperate need for longer, thicker lashes, but I would worry about putting those chemicals near my eyes. As for PS, I want to age gracefully. I don’t mind looking older because that’s just the way life is. I am really curious to see what I’ll look like when I’m 50!
Icaria says
Snails & bird poop, no way! Fish pedi, growing up swimming in a lake I guess I had that on regular basis but would never pay for that. I think the only thing I may consider would be botox but with good references, I wouldn’t want to end up with no facial expressions.
Liz says
Tattooed makeup, cosmetic surgery on my face, fake nails, and anything involving body fluids are off the table. I’ve never gone tanning and I won’t ever do it. I don’t think I would even spray tan. I don’t get the obsession of looking tanned. On the flip side I would never try bleaching cream to lighten my skin color. I’m mostly leaning towards no about botox. I also figure by the time I’m old enough to consider it, something else will probably be on the market anyway.
Tami says
I feel the same way you do about the snail thing. Also those fish pedi’s. I’m not doing that!
I would like to hear more about the lion crawling???? 😊
Carrie says
The blood facial and bird poop facial sound disgusting. I probably won’t have plastic surgery. Not because I am afraid of dying, but that if I DID die during surgery, it would be such an embarrassing thing for my husband to have to explain to people. “Well, she died valiantly fighting muffin top.”
Kiss & Make-up says
Haha, that photo 😀 I can almost hear you say: Nu uh I aint’ doin’ that girl!
🙂
Let’s see, what would I refuse to do… I would never get permanent make-up.
Katherine M says
I would never get a pedicure or a manicure (because of the high infection rate, I see this all the time in the ER – my job will make you think twice about some ordinary things), I will never get cosmetic surgery (always jokingly thought about breast augmentation, but I know it’s not worth it), I will never do any kinds of facials with weird names or products (bird poop or caviar, anyone?), as much as I love being southern Italian and tan, I will never resort to going to a tanning salon (hate the way a lot of tanning stuff smells, too), and I would never get a full makeover done (I think to each their own, and makeup/hair/beauty is a learning experience throughout life as to what best suits a person).
Liz says
I didn’t know there were others like me who don’t like to get manicures or pedicures due to the fear of getting an infection.
Marian says
Well…..let’s see….I’ve been doing the Latisse for years now (not at US prices though, I’d NEVER do that!)
and I’m seriously thinking about the snail slime…
I’d pretty much try anything that isn’t permanent except injecting anything into my lips gahhhhhhhh!
Chelsea says
No bird poo, no snail slime, no blood facial, no fish pedicure, definitely no tanning salons (no one should step in one, but as a ginger, this is especially true!). There’s probably other things too.
StrayCat says
Oh Pussycat….Latisse is as easy as poppin’ a can of gravy for Tabs! I’ve been using it for years and have enviable long lashes. There is one annoying downside, the darkening of the skin on the lids but a little concealer and no one is the wiser. As for the serious stuff….I’ll never have a facelift, but I’ve had a bit of lazer done. Big mistake…left me with whitish spots which frankly are just as unattractive as the dark spots! I’ll never get a body tattoo, but am really interested (mainly to conserve my sanity) in getting my brows filled in. I’ve suffered from anorexia and exercise abuse when I was younger, but now I’m too lazy and like to eat too much for that nonsense. I get just a bit of Botox to keep the “eleven line” at bay, use good skin care, eat super healthy (I’m a vegan) exercise, laugh, play and am owned by a Tabby, how much better could my beauty routine get?
Trisha says
I won’t get any cosmetic surgery. Not even botox. I’ve decided to age gracefully (and maybe use some anti-aging skin care products…)
Danielle says
I won’t do anything gross involving slime haha. But out of all the *normal* beauty things, I refuse to fake tan.
Stephanie Smith says
No cutting into my face, and nothing injected into my face. It always looks fake, no matter what anyone says. Faces are meant to age! A lot of these fads are just fade, they’ll be popular for a few years but then they’ll disappear and something new will pop up.
Angel says
Benton Snail Bee Essence, I’m telling you girl, this stuff is like a miracle in a bottle. I was freaked by snail slime for a while. Couldn’t try it anyway as almost all of the snail creams are loaded with silicones. But I stumbled upon the Benton and found its ingredient panel to be the bomb. So pure, so basic, nothing bad! And my skin is glowing!!! I have never had people comment on my skin until I started using this about 3 months ago. I kid you not!
Katie F says
Hmm…if the snails are still living I might try it. If getting the slime kills them, I don’t think I could, my heart bleeds even for icky crawly things. No surgery or injections, nothing permanent, no bleaching of hair (I have super dark super curly hair and I think it would just break off), no tanning beds, no fake nails (nothing against them in general, but I have really strong nails and am afraid acrylics would damage them), no teeth bleaching or veneers or other teeth things (had enough dental surgery in my life, thanks!). Ok, apparently there is a lot of stuff I would not do, LOL.
I would totally do the fish-pedi thing though — sounds like fun!
Steph says
No snail goop, leeches, or tanning beds for me. Also, I’m terrified of fish so no fish pedis! I’d consider plastic surgery if I had the dough, but I’d be scared of looking terrible. The things I want, like lip collagen, would probably just make me end up looking like Courtney Love.
Betsy Clark says
Awwwwwwwwww…let’s show some love for the mighty snail! Honestly, I am amazed at how my skin is looking after starting to use a CC cream with “snail secretion filtrate”. Yep- I had to think about it, but it leaves my skin dewy, smooth, and the benefits seem to continue even after cleansing my skin.
I will NOT:
Botox or Plastic Surgery. Though I am 58, I’m trying to (semi!) gracefully become a classy middle aged chick. More power to people who do what they need to, because I can’t judge. Honestly, I am scared I wouldn’t look like me anymore!
Liz says
I’ve seen a few celebrities who had obvious work done. Some were practically unrecognizable. I would be afraid of that too. I always think how beautiful Jennifer Grey was before her nose job. She was beautiful after, but looked like a completely different person. Sometimes it kind of scares me at how different I look bare faced, compared to done up. So, I think permanent face surgery would freak me out.
Liz says
Last thought for today. I love your eye makeup in the photo, Karen.
sharasu2 says
If it makes you feel any better, the active ingredient in Latisse (bimatoprost) is the exact same active ingredient in an eyedrop used to treat glaucoma (Lumigan). The medication was first developed to go into the eyes. It just so happened that an amazing side effect of Lumigan was thickening and lengthening of the lashes…so surprise, drug companies figured out to make a sweet profit on the side effect (they are really good at trying to fix problems we didn’t even know we had). Latisse use can cause discoloration of skin and irises (which can be permanent), but your lashes will look amazeballs.
breyerchic04 says
I use Korean(?) sheet masks, so I’m not willing to say I haven’t stuck snail slime or birds nest or equally freaky things on my face.
And while I’m not there now, I’d consider Restaline or some other filler to try to deal with my dark circles. So right now I can’t think of things I wouldn’t try. Though I can’t imagine wearing fake lashes except as a costume or joke, never seriously even for a major occasion.
Maggie says
Tanning salons or going out in the sun for the purpose of tanning would be the biggest thing to avoid in the name of beauty. No Latisse either–that stuff can change the color of your irises! But I might try an alternative lash growth serum. I also wouldn’t choose blood, snail slime, or bird poop for facials either but I would try those before I would go to a tanning salon. I don’t know if I’d pay for a fish pedicure but I am curious.
Ashley says
Anything would hurt me too much would be a no-go, or anything that would make me want to puke, like snail butts hahaha
Iris says
Same here with eyelash extensions. I’ve found I can’t really put things really near or in my eyes. It makes me squeamish. Even putting in eyedrops is difficult for me.
