I’d say, “true-ish,” or mostly true, with the caveat of, “Rules are meant to be broken.”
When I wear brights like blues or greens or purples, I do tend to stick to things like matte browns and bronzes in my crease and along the lower lash line because I feel like they make the look more everyday wearable, but it’s not something I strictly adhere to.
Sometimes, I just feel like swingin’ for the fences, ya know? Because I figure, if you’re already going to wear something eye-catching — maybe a bright orange, a hot pink or a neon green — might as well go all out.
I like seeing gals/guys gutsy enough to wear brights on their eyes and really go all the way and express themselves. It keeps the world interesting.
If it makes you happy, more power to you, my friend! 🙂
True or false: any time you’re using bright colors on the eyes, you need to ground them with neutrals.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Um, I think that first picture clearly answers your question. Pardon my language, but *damn*, Karen.
Kiss & Make-up says
Your look is proof enough that this is indeed true, or at least true-ish like you said 🙂 I don’t believe in rules when it comes to make-up, but in general I do think that this is a good guideline to stick to!
Saffron says
Awwww hell no! Tell me that eye look that you are totally rockin up there wouldn’t be amazing with a hot pink or bright purple lip? Look, if I’m needing to be all dainty and fitting fashion tab a into politely trendy slot b then sure, but really life is too short for that garbage.
Also I need those shoes.
Karen says
I saw them when I was in SF last week and came this close to asking if I could try them on…then I realized that they’re probably for kids. Sigh. This has been happening a LOT lately.
Ruchita says
True for me. In general, I prefer neutrals for lips and blush. But I know many ladies who rock colorful looks and I think that’s awesome!
Those shoes are cute. 🙂 TGIF!
Karen says
TGIF to you too, Ruchita! Oh, and PS, those cupcakes you posted on instagram looked delish.
Are ya baking this weekend?!
Ruchita says
Thanks! I can confirm they were yummy. 🙂 I made them for my brother-in-law’s 40th birthday. I had a craving for chocolate chip cookies, so I might make some of those this weekend.
For some reason Mingy was really curious when I was frosting the cupcakes and kept watching me. Finally, I put a tiny bit of frosting on my finger and let him check it out. I thought he wouldn’t be interested, but he licked it right off!
Eesha says
Wow Karen, you look stunning huh… well to ground the look I usually like a black winged liner, may be not a very dramatic wing.
Karen says
Thanks Eesha. I do the same thing too sometimes. Black winged liner goes with errrrthing! I love it. 🙂
Happy Friday!
Iulia says
True for me, too. Probably the only time I’ll not be going for my favorite red lips.
P.S.: GORGEOUS necklace btw. Where did you get that? Totally love it.
XOXO
Erin says
For daytime wear this is probably very true. For evening or clubbing, I think you have some leeway to play with while still keeping it sophisticated especially in the summer with sheer tints on the lips!
Divya says
Such a stunner you are! I am not very “adventurous” with makeup sadly! stick to what works for me and don’t care about ttrends much. But to answer your question, I would like the bold feature take centre stage!so the rest, neutral!
Sarah says
I absolutely ADORE this eye combo on you. Just love, love, love it…it’s just fantastic. I hadn’t been an eye shadow girl until recently, and I seriously can’t get enough fun colours! My go to colourful palette recently has been the Limecrime Aquataenia palette!
I will sometimes tone down the bright colours on my eyes with a more nude lip and toned down cheek.
Beautiful look Karen, and hope you have a fantastic weekend!

I think it depends on what you’re happy with. If you’re into extreme makeup, that’s cool. If you want a balance when it comes to your makeup, it might be good to throw in some neutrals.

Please tell me you’ve checked out ModCloth.com’s cat flats?

I don’t really ever wear brights! If I were to wear them, I’d probably ground them with neutrals, but it’s definitely not necessary!
Carla N. says
Since I have bright green eyes, I stay with all neutral eye makeup; I prefer to leave the bright shadows and liners to brown-eyed people, who [in my opinion] carry them off best.
I indulge my love of color on my lips. I have never done a neutral lip in my life, and I’m too old to start now. 🙂
That said, I really like the combination of, say, purple eyeshadow and pink lipstick.
But only on others.
Sylirael says
Sometimes, I think it’s nice to go neutral on the other feature just so that the colourful feature gets a chance to fully shine. However, nothing’s stopping me from wearing bright colours on both eyes and lips if I want to! 😀

Oah my gawd, oah my gawd, OAH MY GAWD! (Tiny freak out moment)Stunning Karen!!! IS there a list someone of everything that you used to create this look. I would run out this very second to buy everything on it to recreate this look. Granted, I would be the most fashionable face at the grocery store, on a Friday night, but dang it I would rock it….Could you give me a run down? Hugs!
Celi says
Somewhere, not someone….sheesh, lol.
Xero says
Lol, not true at all! Especially when wearing matte or low-shimmer colors. Just yesterday I wore a look with bright yellow, teal and a darker teal in the crease…all matte. I feel like just having a darker color in the crease and some dark eyeliner is enough to balance the look. I don’t like putting eyeshadow under my eyes though, I definitely feel like that is too much for daytime wear.

LMAO Alison M! 😀
Crystal says
Karen! Please tell me you own Vans Cat slip-ons? And that necklace is gorgeous! 🙂
Doreen says
I would say “True”!
Astrild says
Totally true for me. It’s the only way I can wear brights.
Majick says
I would have to agree with you on the “true-ish”. But I think last week I used the UD Electric Palette, did a blue/green/yellow/silver eye and had a bright lip as well. I think it looked ok because I was also wearing black framed glasses. HAH I guess that was my neutral. LOL
I think when you’re younger and don’t have lines or crepe texture on your eyelids you can wear just about anything you darn well please. Makeup should be FUN as well as corrective or transforming and I think a lot depends on your confidence level.
THat said – I WANT THOSE SHOES! (and I don’t even like sneakers LOL)
Kaelyn says
I just got the Urban Decay electric palette, so I am going to experiment with ways to make it everyday wearable for the office!
