Just a quick note to say hi. 🙂 Hopefully, I’m on the last leg of the Bay to Breakers race in San Francisco right now (I wrote this last night) and not still sleeping at home or passed out on a city sidewalk from fatigue.
(I better not still be asleep… If I am, I’m very sorry, Marisol!)
Bit o’ beauty from around the way…
- One of my favorite superheroes is getting the boot! — the re-boot. I hope the filmmakers nail it, and speaking of nails, OPI obviously had fun naming the colors in their new Amazing Spider-Man Collection — Nails and Noms
- Wow, one could get four of these $4 Maybelline Baby Lip Balms for the price of a single MAC Suntint (and they sound better, too) — My Weekend Ramblings
- Celebrating Donna Summer’s Best Disco Queen Moments — New York Magazine
And for anyone who needs/wants to work from the road (i.e. a road warrior)…
- When the power went out on Thursday, I was up in my office at home uploading pictures for a post, and I’d just finished the pics when the whole place went dark, lights, computer, every clock in the house. I hadn’t written anything yet, but I noticed that my phone still had power…
I remembered seeing someone at a coffee shop use a regular Apple iMac wireless keyboard to type directly into their iPhone. Since both have Bluetooth, you can pair the keyboard to the phone (or an iPad). For bloggers, or anyone who needs/wants to take notes or write lengthy emails, it’s a good travel combination. Any Bluetooth keyboard should work. Just slip the keyboard, if it’s small enough, into a big purse or your book bag when you hit the road.
- Another road warrior tip for people who need access to the Net while they travel, or in my case, want a fallback Internet connection for power outages at home, there’s the Verizon MiFi Jetpack 4G Wireless Hotspot. They’re about the size of a cellphone and work like your wireless router at home, letting you surf the Net on your phone or computer over a Wifi connection, except using a carrier like Verizon, Sprint or AT&T.
With the prepaid ones, you aren’t under a contract, and you only pay for the months you use. Oh, and the connection is more secure than free Wifi hotspots in public places like coffee shops and bookstores, where it’s possible to steal your passwords over the air.
- Just some of my favorite iPhone apps lately, and I hope you share your favorites too (please do!): the iOS Kindle app (FREE; Amazon.com just makes it so easy to buy books and get them on my phone), Dictionary (FREE; by FAR my favorite dictionary/thesaurus app on the iPhone), AP Stylebook (it’s expensive at $24.99, but if you’re familiar with the print AP Stylebook and like to write, it’s an invaluable tool), WordPress for iOS (the app I use to remotely blog) and the Netflix app (FREE; also available for Android phones; requires a $7.99/month Netflix subscription).
About the Netflix app, don’t tell anyone I told you :), but it’s possible to share a single subscription between two different households, as long as they use the same Netflix login account (shh…).

My first ever comment here ;). Been reading for a while (who can resist the combination of makeup talk and TABS!). Started reading this blog just as “Evolution Revolution” was taking shape…Love your writings, Karen!
Karen says
Hi, musical. I’m glad you decided to comment! Everyone here is very nice. 🙂

Thanks for the link, Karen! And I did not read that line about Netflix…no I did not…and you didn’t type it either 😛 😀 😀
Karen says
Hi, Radhika. I love your pics in that post (and pretty much all of your pics; you’re a great photographer).
No, you did NOT read that thing about Netflix. 🙂 Gotta keep it hush, hush because a certain blogger’s family — a certain blogger who shall remain nameless — is doing it.

Great tips! I have a Droid 3, and I love it (but like all smartphones, it has its glitches and moments where it will freeze or not do what I want it to do). I have the Kindle app for that as well and it’s great because I can read my books on there and it doesn’t use up a lot of battery. As for games, I have the free Oregon Trail Settler app and that’s a good one if you have downtime and want to play a mindless but fun game. So far with my Droid 3 I haven’t had to buy any apps, which is nice (the phone bills can be enough as it is for smartphones!). I did have to buy some apps when I had my BlackBerry Bold 9000.
Karen says
Hi, Katherine. I’ll have to look for that Oregon Trail Settler app. I remember also seeing it listed in a review roundup of top game apps of the year. My favorite mobile game is still Bejeweled, though. LOVE that game.
What are you up to this weekend? I got back from the Bay to Breakers a few hours ago, and now I’m sitting on the couch in front of the TV slowly drifting off to sleep… Very sleepy right now…

Another week done — this week zipped by! Not sure if im ready to go back to work but its gotta be done! 🙂
Karen says
Hi, Nina! It did, didn’t it? It was gone in 60 seconds! At least the weather’s been nice. I hope it’s nice out there (and not too hot). Tell LOL I said hi.
Nina says
LOL says *meowrrr* back to you and Tabs! 🙂
It was really hot but thats par for the course. We dont really get much of a spring season, really. Maybe a week of spring and then summer all the way through September/October.

Karen,
I’m not a member of the icult but I have a blackberry and I second that kindle app. What’s even better is that you can checkout ebooks from your local library, download ones that are available to your phone, and/or even put ones on hold. Case in point, I just finished 50 Shades Darker (book 2 of the 50 Shades of Sray) series, and I’m on the list for book 3!
My phone’s browser I can search using google, bing, wikipedia, or dictionary.com. My mom is famous for using words incorrectly and I’m like mom it doesn’t mean that. Dictionary.com has squashed many an argument!!
Love the Donna Summer link, her hair is still lustworthy!!

I love the title picture!
