UPDATE 11/17/08: The giveaway is closed, and winners will be notified soon. Good luck!
YOU: Being Beautiful, a new beauty book by New York Times bestselling authors Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Michael Roizen, hit shelves this week.
This book is the fifth in the YOU: The Owner’s Manual health series, and in it the doctors discuss three levels of beauty in their trademark writing style which blends science with entertainment.
- Looking Beautiful: what you can do to keep your skin, hair, teeth, hands, feet and body looking great
- Feeling Beautiful: dealing with “inner” beauty health issues like aches, pains and stress
- Being Beautiful: how improving your relationships with loved ones can help you find true happiness
Oprah’s homeboys (did you see the book featured on her show on Tuesday?) also talk about how different foods, vitamins, creams, gels and injections can boost how you look on the outside and feel on the inside.
I’m pretty excited about seeing this book in stores because I got to read the drafts at the literary agency, and I can remember when the book looked just like this:
My favorite parts of the book are the sections detailing the biology of beauty. I also like the helpful YOU Tips! sprinkled throughout the chapters.
YOU Tips!
CREAM IT ON. There are hundreds of skin care ingredients, including many with fancy names and expensive price tags. But there is very little science to most of them and no science to many of them. The list of ingredients that really can make a difference in the skin is small. The big ingredients (and their closely related derivatives) to know:
- Vitamin A (retinoids)
- Vitamin B3 (niacin or nicotinamide)
- Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid, panthenol)
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin E
- Alpha-hydroxy acids
- Ubiquinone or coenzyme Q10 (small-molecule antioxidant)
- Ferulic acid (small-molecule antioxidant)
These eight are examples of skin-care ingredients you can cream on with solid scientific backing.

What keeps me being beautiful? On the outside, lots of sunscreen and sleep. 🙂 On the inside… bringing laughter to other people’s lives. I’m not nearly as funny as my dad or my brother (the true comedians of our family), but I do have those occasional moments when I can say or point something out and get my friends to totally crack up. To see them smile and hear them laugh makes this part inside me light up with joy.
I’ll choose the winners at random from among the people who enter by 11 PM PST on Sunday. Please be sure to leave a valid email address when you comment so I can reach you if you win.

Hey Karen!
This book rocks!!!
What keeps me beautiful on the outside… My ability to play with makeup and be able to “become” all sorts of different beautifuls.
On the Inside… I must say I am struggling with the inside. I have been having some health issues lately that are testing my inner beauty… after all how can you feel beautiful if all you can think is about the possibilities that you may be sick… ON A BRIGHTER NOTE!!! — What keeps me beautiful on the inside when I am not “blah” is the career I am so passionate about… I am a Social Worker and even though I dwindled in several things before life threw me in this direction I can tell you it is the most fascinating thing I have EVER done. Being able to get a patient/client who is struggling with mental illness the necessary services for them to function and use their “abilities” to their fullest makes you glow. I am beautiful on the inside because I dedicate my life, my soul, my heart to those who need advocacy, who need love. To the population that I serve I am beautiful because I am an open mind, a listening ear, someone who will NOT judge… you have no idea how great that makes me feel… even at times when I dont feel so beautiful.
Ah! This served more as a journal entry than a contest entry… Sorry if it was too long or too personal!
Lots of Love your way!!!!!!!!!

What keeps me being, looking and feeling beautiful is being in love and being a mom!!

On the outside, I would say what keeps me beautiful are the Eminence all natural and Vivant skincare products I use…recommended by my fab esthetician! Inside, I would say my passionate nature and my desire to proactively engage in things that are important to me, such as volunteering with and being on the advisory board of Dress for Success, a non-profit welfare to work program that helps acclimate women to the corporate workforce makes be beautiful…seeing those aspirant ladies striving to do more and be better truly touches my heart and makes me proud…I love giving back to them! I would also say that being around my family and engaging in our analytical discourses and just making each other laugh makes me happy…and beautiful…they know me, and it just feels good to be in your element surrounded by familiarity sometimes…I have a very sarcastic sense of humor and sometimes only those who are really close to me and know me “get it”! 🙂 I would also say that coming even more alive in my pole dance class makes me radiant…it’s so much fun, and you can truly dance like no one’s watching! 😉

Hi Karen 🙂
I think what keeps me being beautiful is…
How even though I am always looking for more makeup, more tips, trends, colors.. that I always remind myself what matters and what’s beautiful isn’t superficial in this world.. it’s the people, nature and kindness that’s beautiful.
I feel most beautiful when I do something nice for someone… something random and not expected.. when I go out of my way to do just the littlest thing to make someone’s day easier.. when I go through a toll and pay an extra dollar for the person behind me.. I don’t get to see their reaction when they drive up and are told they’re all set but driving away, I smile each time.
When I visit with my Grandmother a little bit longer than I have to.. or when I show someone I was truly listening to them at an earlier time by remembering a detail or favorite song, color or book of their’s…
Such small things but they make you feel amazing.. I don’t do it for the self gratification obviously but I always feel more beautiful after I do it 🙂
Have a good weekend!

What keep me beautiful on the outside: I try to take good care of my skin – staying out of the sun and using sunscreen as often as I can remember. I also try to buy the best products that I can afford and I spend a lot of time researching products and ingredients so I know exactly what is going on my skin.
What keeps me beautiful on the inside: Well, honestly, some days I feel more beautiful internally than others! But, it is my faith that keeps me grounded and inspired. My faith has kept me going during my darkest days and my faith helps me to reach out to others so that I can share what God has done in my life and hopefully encourage friends and family along the way.

It probably sounds corny but I really believe my job keeps me beautiful both on the inside and out. On the outside obviously the free Chanel loot is a great help in the keeping beautiful stakes but far more so it helps on the inside.
The main thing I love about my job is meeting so many people on a daily basis and how much they open up to me, I never realised how much people will pour their hearts out to their favourite makeup artist, i guess Im in quite a privilidged position where people come to talk to me about their appearance which can be a really emotional thing. One occasion that I will always remember was a lady who came to the counter who suffered from serious hyper pigmentation and had never been able to find a foundation to cover it. I layered up Teint Innocence compact foundation over the pigmentation and left it more natural on the rest of her face and when I showed her it in the mirror she burst into tears because she finally saw her face the way she wanted it to look!
It really makes you realise how rediculous you are for focussing on your tiny imperfections and make the most of how naturally beautiful you are!
Brittany says
Hmm..I *always* use a pretty natural pink blush (preferably of the cream variety) and I always use a little bit of black eyeliner under my top lashes just do I look pretty and wide awake. And mascara. Tons of that 🙂 That’s what keeps me pretty on the outside.
My friends are definitely what keep me beautiful on the inside. Since I live so far away from my family, they are my strength and support system. If I’m having a horrible day I can just hang out with one of my best friends and she’ll seriously change my whole attitude. Plus, who else would I gab about my love of makeup and beauty products with?
Roxy says
Thanks for a great post and a wonderful contest, Karen. I’m enjoying reading everyone’s comments and tips and I love that so much attention is being focused on the inside of beauty.
My thoughts on the matter are that a positive outlook and treating others as you’d like to be treated do LOTS for inner and outer beauty. Being happy with you – no matter what you look like – and feeling confident with who you are does so much to project both kinds of beauty into the world.
As for outward creature comforts, what makes me feel most beautiful is treating myself to a soothing, relaxing skincare routine and spritzing a bit of fragrance on. Could go completely without makeup (as much as I adore it) if those other two are present.

What keeps me beautiful is my husband. He makes me feel loved and cared for, and he reminds me that my quirks are endearing. Sometimes, he looks at me and says, “You look so beautiful right now,” and I can’t help believing it.
Matina says
What keeps me beautiful are the obvious things: my love, my friends, my family and my pets.
What also keeps me beautiful are the not so obvious things: my favorite song on the radio, my new silver nail polish, my morning latte, a lazy Sunday in m pj’s and Perezhilton.com.
And, lots of water, veggies, lovin’ and sleep, of course!
Loni says
I think beauty literally comes from the inside out. To look my prettiest, I try to get lots of sleep, drink multiple cups of green tea, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, laugh with my students every day, and meditate when I’m feeling stressed. Sex with a partner who loves you is great for beauty, too!
Other than that…stay moisturized and work with the skin/hair type nature gave you. And find a good concealer.
Kam says
Hi Karen,
Great contest! What keeps me beautiful on the outside is protecting myself from the sun, eating right, and adding a lil colour to my face (blush, bronzer):) And on the inside: helping others, smiling at life’s lil things, and keeping good company –> positive beautiful energy is always contagious!
Shiny says
Being beautiful, both inside and out is a commitment I make to myself. Every day if I commit some time to myself, whether that is putting on my makeup in the morning or coming home from classes to read beauty blogs and de-stress – then I am telling myself I am worth the effort. Beauty is not about impressing other people, I truly feel better about myself when I can look at myself at the end of the day and say, you made it through the day and you still look great.
Beauty is commitment, it is a daily effort and for many of us women who enjoy the ritual – it is an affirmation.

Hi Karen,
What has been keeping me beautiful as of late is my husband. The past couple of months have been a rough time, with the death of my father and the death of a long term friendship. Hubby has been my rock during those times and has kept and keeps me beautiful by keeping me laughing and letting me know that although I feel hurt these situations will make me a stronger woman.

On the outside: washing my face every single night, moisturizer and sunscreen (although I spent MANY summers in the sun in teenage years with nada, but I always washed and moisturized my face at bedtime, do I get points for that?!?)
On the inside: loving and being loved by my friends, my cat, my pup and my fella.

I think what keeps me beautiful in general is just cutting myself some slack. I realize that working out daily and eating perfectly will make me resemble some starlets but seriously sometimes life gets in the way. Sometimes I can’t workout for a week or I get a zit and I have to just remind myself that it’s alright if I am not perfect always. I honestly feel better about myself and therefore I think I project a better image when I just relax and let myself be. I however definately rely heavily on moisturizer and mascara to project a slightly more polished image.

What is my beauty?
My loveliness is my intelligence. Being an airhead with a pretty face will not get you very far in a conversation. The real world is tough and cruel where only the fittest survive. The fittest have the same trait in common: brains. No one can steal your mind. When you must depend on yourself and no others, your brilliance is your best ally.
My glamour is my confidence. With my armor of poise and assurance, I show others that I am not afraid. I present to others that I have faith in my beliefs and opinions. I convey that stamina runs through my veins and my certainty is something I prize.
My radiance is my independence. In today’s society, it’s all about women empowerment.
In the present generation, women are striving to reach the same level as men, or surpass them. The freedom given to us in this world allows us to express ourselves individually. Liberty within our reach has given us the power to make differences.
Years later, outer beauty fades. But the important things remain forever.
My beauty is my spirit.

hey karen! this contest was a great idea 🙂
life has just been so hard these past few years (parent’s divorcing, losing a friend to suicide, dealing with an abusive father, my sister’s eating disorder, and my battle with depression just to name a few.) lol i’m not trying to get sympathy, it just feels good to talk about it; to know that i’m getting through it and will be stronger because of it.
ballet is the main thing that keeps me beautiful on the inside and out. i used to hate my body, but after training with some amazing people, i’ve figured out how much my body can do; my body type is considered “beautiful” in the ballet world. i’ve never had such a positive outlet before–i can release all my stress, anger, confusion, etc and really work on my body and confidence at the same time. plus it will be there in the future with teaching and performing 🙂
makeup is also a wonderful outlet, although i feel that its often misunderstood. its not about vanity or putting on a mask; its about knowing yourself well. finding the products that work for you. its about feeling and looking beautiful and expressing yourself. i gave my mom a makeover a couple of months ago and i’ve never seen her glow like that and be so confident! she has been completely beaten down by this divorce (she was married to my dad for 30 years) and she never does anything for herself. its amazing to me because we are kind-of going through the same process of finding ourselves. it makes me feel so good to know that i’m helping her in some way 😀
i love your blog too, btw. it definitely feeds my makeup addiction, but i love your sense of humor too, and all the stuff about tabs. i have 3 cats myself and they are such great therapy 🙂 lol ok i’ve kind of written my own book here, so i’ll stop.
thank you!

What keeps me beautiful. Knowing I am enough. I just ended a major relationship and despite the heartbreak, I feel truly beautiful. I know that it wasn’t my fault, I know that I will will meet someone else. When I looked in the mirror today I saw a very strong woman. Someone who will be okay, not always joyful and fantastically happy, but okay. No makeup in the world couldl do that. I have left the salon and felt great only to have someone treat me badly and lose all my self esteem. But this feeling is untouchable. Nothing can take this away.

Hey Karen! I’m a long time lurker, but I LOVE your blog and I def. had to share “what keeps me beautiful”
On the inside: Being gracious and appreciative – only then do I truly feel happy and realized my place in this world… Too often, we feel the world revolves around ourselves, but even though I am only 22, I realize that we are just one person. And the only way to leave our mark is by being happy because once we are happy, only goodness can exude from our spirit.
On the outside: All I need in this life to feel glamorous is some eyeliner (Urban Decay Zero), a touch of mascara (Lash Blast) and gloss (Lipglass)… Underneath it all is some DOVE soap and my grapeseed oil as a moisturizer. *As a Biology major, I have discovered that grapeseed oil results in the HIGHEST rate of cell turnover/rejuvenation = youthful, plum, fresh skin. And of course, SPF 70.
Have a fab weekend, gorgeous!

Always, always, ALWAYS take one day of the week to just relax and give yourself some DIY beauty treatments: scrub, take a bubble bath, put on some body butter, drink some tea, and go to sleep early. You end up feeling so refreshed and glowing!
Tiffany says
What keeps me beautiful, is always growing as a person, laughing, and when all else fails; MAC!
You can use all the concealer and mascara in the world, but it’s not easy to fake outer beauty when you’re not happy or confident on the inside. It’s like when you see someone smiling, but their eyes are sad. I’ve always believed that good friends, good food, reading, learning and LAUGHING are the ingredients to the cocktail of happiness and ultimately, beauty.
Of course a little MAC can give us the push we need too!
I find that I look the most beautiful when I have on some Hyper Real, Dollymix, Diorshow (ok, I swayed from the MAC for just a sec!) and lip balm.
Hope you’re doing well, Karen!

Hi Karen! Can’t wait to read the book; I loved You-An Owner’s Manual.
What keeps me beautiful is letting go of stress and believing in myself.
Without getting too hippy-dippy, letting go of stress is just easier on your skin: less acne, fewer wrinkles, better sleep for fewer wrinkles. Believing in myself let’s me take chances that lead to success, and treat myself to care and occasional luxury.
Okay, so it’s a little hippy-dippy! 😉

I’m a huge makeup/skincare junkie, but I have discovered over the years that while those things help you look more beautiful at times, they’re not truly what can KEEP you beautiful. A good laugh (and sometimes a good cry), spending time with loved ones, doing something you love to do (like curling up with a good book or watching a favorite movie), and penciling in some ‘you’ time in your busy schedule is the true secret to being and staying beautiful (inside and out).
Becky says
What keeps me feeling beautiful on the outside and inside is taking time to pamper myself, and also trying to better myself.
Sherry B. says
What keeps me beautiful on the inside is being gentle with myself, as well as others. Too often, we are able to forgive other people while beating up on ourselves about everything that goes wrong. We are all only human and as such we all have flaws. We must learn to accept those parts of ourselves that we are unable to change. Despising oneself is a terrible way to live.

What makes anyone beautiful is having the “inner spark,” appreciating all the little things in life and wanting to better themselves. Of course, having flawless skin also helps 🙂

What keeps me beautiful on the inside is having a positive attitude.
