Yes, I know it’s CAT-urday, but here’s a pic of Detective Stabler with a very sad-looking Golden Retriever puppy…just because. 🙂
Speaking of fantabulous shows, I needed a brief Midsomer Murder marathon break, so I started watching The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu.
Dude. This show? Incredible! It’s haunting and beautiful and disturbing and thought-provoking and knocks my socks off on the regular!
The 20-second summary: a militaristic religious fundamentalist group rises to power in a dystopian United States where a mysterious calamity has made most of the men and women sterile, except for these so-called “handmaids,” who are basically people who exists solely to produce babies.
It’s based on a book by Margaret Atwood of the same name, and Elisabeth Moss from Mad Men plays the main character, Offred.
I mean…once upon a time I thought that zombies were the scariest things about the apocalypse, but NOPE! I was wrong.
They’re only up to four episodes so far, and new ones come out weekly on Hulu, so you could catch up fast.
PLEASE watch it if you get a chance, and let me know! I want to talk about it.
The show also uses music in really cool, interesting ways. Like, I’ve had Don’t You Forget About Me by Simple Minds stuck in my head all week.
Sooo much ’80s realness right there. 🙂 Talk about the soundtrack of my childhood.

Raul! ??? That made me spew a bit of coffee. Best. Name. Ever.
Karen says
Hi Angie,
It was the right name to give my nemesis! Darn that Raul!
LK says
Same here, read about ‘Raul’ and laughed so hard my neighbors must have heard it! And ‘Don’t you forget about me’ is an amazing song! Though I kinda prefer the Billy Idol version, liking his voice much more. 🙂
And that’s quite the reading list! Looked at a few of them, thanks for posting!
For me right now, super into ‘Z: The beginning of everything’, on Amazon. Great characters and story. And Christina Ricci is amazing in it!
Karen says
Hi LK,
I watched a couple episodes of that show and liked it. Christina Ricci has such expressive eyes!
Hope you’re having a nice weekend so far. What are you up to? I just got back from the meet-up and now I’m relaxing at home. I’m going to read a little bit and eat some leftover pizza from last night.
LK says
Hey there! She sure does, doesn’t she! Lovely for the role, and actually so much prettier than I remembered.
Yes, how was the meetup?? If I wasn’t in Scotland, would have loved to join!!
And not doing anything much right now. It’s past midnight and just finished watching the last episode of Breaking bad. I had never seen it before, and thought it was amazing…! Probably one of the best TV shows I’ve ever seen. But I only get to watch if my partner is home, otherwise it’s <>, and therefore not allowed, ha ha! So it’s when I’m by myself that I watch Z 🙂
I got this job interview coming up and they gave me a little exercise to do at home beforehand. So maybe I’ll do some of that before bed. It’s basically a dataset to analyze, and figure out some trends. But pizza and reading sure sounds nicer to me…! Particularly with a kitty around, somewhere. Love cats so much, btw, but never got one since I don’t know how I’d manage with the cleaning etc.

Above, in between the signs, I meant: it’s “TV cheating” ! Not sure why that text vanished. 🙂

The Handmaid’s Tale should be required reading. Even though it was written in the 1980’s, it should stand as a strong cautionary tale to everyone regarding the road to self-destruction and domination over others that the policies of the Alt Right are so found of promoting in the name of righteous values. Read it today and you’ll be constantly pausing to reflect on many of our current ultra conservative political players, the progress and freedom that they are steadily attempting to grind away, and how we–as women–are particularly at risk. Not everything ne has the time to read the book, so definitely tune in to the series. It’s on of the scariest things I’ve seen in my 74 years.
Eileen says
Sorry for the typos: I should have typed “Not everyone has the time” and “It’s one of the scariest”.
Eileen says
Afterthought spawned by my Handmaid’s comment, now that the Republican health care proposal has gone to the Senate, did you know that of the 21 female senators, not a single one is on the committee? All 13 health care committee members are men. How did that happen? We’re facing an unprecedented attack on women’s health care (and no this isn’t just about abortion–it incompasses things like breast and cervical cancer screening, birth control, reproductive problems, maternity leave, etc) and yet it is in the hands of a bunch of men. If you care, you should take a couple minutes to email your senators and ask why there are only men involved in this. No more politics! I promise!!
Karen says
Hi Eileen,
I read it a long time ago and plan to re-read it again. It’s scary to think of how so many things that happen in the book have already happened to women around the world.

The Handmaid’s Tale is screening here in Australia soon – I’ll definitely be watching it – but it could be difficult viewing (in a good way, if you know what I mean).
I’m going off topic here – but Karen did you experience any post parting hair loss? Any other readers have it? My baby is 4 months old and I’m shedding hair like crazy! Any tips? Cut my hair short? Leave it long? Shave it off?!? ?
Karen says
Hi Janet,
Yes, I experienced post-partum hair loss and it was SCARY. Mine came out in clumps in the shower and at one point it felt like I didn’t have any more hair to lose, OMG! That’s why I got bangs — they hid the thinning parts around my temples. Several of the girls here mentioned taking pre-natal vitamins and eating a balanced diet with lots of protein, so I did that. And I was gentle with brushing. I thought about cutting my hair shorter, but to be honest, I’ve had short hair before and it’s much higher maintenance for me.
What are you thinking of doing? Chopping it off?
Eileen says
It’s all attributable to the shift in hormones during and after pregnancy. While pregnant, your hair shedding cycle is dramatically slowed. Once you deliver, the normal shedding cycles resumes and hair that would have been shedding all along suddenly starts coming out in globs. It can be quite distressing but it is temporary. Over time, your body’s chemistry rights itself and you’ll be back to a normal growth/shedding cycle. In the meantime, eat healthy (you can take a hair and nail biotin supplement), get some exercise, and try to get adequate rest. That will go a long way towards helping your body normalize.
Janet Shepherd says
Thanks ladies. It’s weird, pre-pregnancy my hair used to have a couple of big shed & regrow cycles each year (curly hair can have weird shed patterns) but this is next level! Losing about double th hair I used to!
I think I’ll get it trimmed slightly shorter, but not cut it all off. I’ve got a big issue with my hair texture too – a lot of my curls dropped when I was pregnant, so about two thirds of my hair is nearly straight. The other third got curlier, not looser! So I’ve got this patch of super coarse, curly hair at the back of my head, and soft loose waves everywhere else. Driving me bonkers!
I’m hoping as it regrows it will reset, texture wise.

That’s such a good picture of you two, she is getting so big.
Handmaid’s Tale is so creepy, I got through one episode and had to take a break. Have you tried Fargo? The first season 1 is so good, season 2 is a prequel which I enjoyed. I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did.
Dorit says
Hi Karen, thank you so much for sharing my post!!! You made my day. 🙂 I would’ve loved to come to the SpaceNK hangout (to chat about beauty and CATS!), but the way from Shanghai to SF isn’t exactly short… Hopefully next time! Have a great Sunday!

Thanks for linking to my Pat McGrath post! It was so much fun to write and that kit is a blast to play with! I hadn’t been on here for a few days 🙂
