¡Y feliz Cinco de Mayo! ??
I love to travel and “get outta Dodge,” so to speak, even if it’s just to head out of town for a couple days to visit my in-laws, like we did last weekend. It’s good for a change of scenery and to break your routines for a bit. And then it also makes the return to those comfy routines all the sweeter when you get back home, ya know?
So, this weekend… Oh, good morning, by the way! 🙂 I’m just rattling on, LOL! I had my coffee early and it’s kicking in.
Anyway, what was I saying…?
Oh, yeah, TRAVEL. I would love to be chilling in Punta de Mita today, maybe catch a few waves at Sayulita, but the furthest I intend to go this weekend is to the gardening store down the street to see if they have any herbs to plant in the pots I grabbed from HomeGoods the other day.
Which takes me to other thing I have planned today — good ol’-fashioned spring cleaning. I don’t want to do it, but it has to be done.
Speaking of HomeGoods, doesn’t that measuring cup with the blue kitty in the top pic look like something Anthropolgie would sell for $45?
Guess who found it at HomeGoods for $7.99. 🙂 Yup, this girl.
- According to Sir John (my spirit animal, and Beyoncé’s makeup artist), this is what you need to do so your cream blush looks like skin.
- This writer accidentally ripped out her lashes, and I totally feel her pain. Here’s how she grew them back.
- When you’re thinking about what to get mom for Mother’s Day, would you consider a $1,400 Gucci sweatshirt? $86 drinking glasses? A $310 one-piece swimsuit?! If so, then check out this over-the-top Mom’s Day gift guide — by The Wall Street Journal, so random!

Ooh, I see a few cream blushes I want to try on this list of celebrity favorite drugstore blushes.
I need that Revlon stick blush in my life, STAT.

According to New York City dermatologist Dr. Rachel Nazarian, there are basically only two types of acne, inflammatory (red, painful cysts) and non-inflammatory (whiteheads and blackheads), and here’s how she develops a patient’s treatment plan.
Oh, and speaking of acne treatments, people used to do lots of sketchy things back in the day, including using mercury, cyanide and cow poop applied to one’s face.
- Apparently, these iconic ’80s beauty products have withstood the test of time and are still beloved today.
- I spent about 30 minutes doing my own makeup for my senior portrait (which was a long time for me back in the day), so props to this 18-year-old high school senior, who spent four hours painting his face for his senior pics. Kevin Kodra, who also works as a makeup artist on the side, used lots of creams to create his bronzed, glowing look.
- The artistry in this took my breath away. I could never pull off these extra-long nails (figuratively) and bejeweled embellishments because I can barely type if my nails are a millimeter too long, so I’m wondering how the ladies who wear extra OTT styles get anything done! — but hey, if you can function with talons, more power to ya!
- Perfumes eventually expire after exposure to oxygen, light and bacteria, but there’s a small but growing niche of perfume retailers who sell vintage perfumes as if they’re fine wines.
If I play my cards right and get my errands done, I’d also like to stop by the library to grab a new book, because reading is fundamental! Are you reading anything good right meow?
Happy Cinco de Mayo, babe. Talk to you soon. 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Ugh. The nails! Ha ha, I can barely look at nails that long. I understand it’s preference and how they feel beautiful but the line, “if my hair is uncombed it’s alright so long as my nails are done.” Ehh. I work with the public, and I see lots of women with long/crazy nails … And that’s it. The rest of their appearance is unkempt. Except for nails. Ha. I’ll never get that. I’m a short nail person like you, and I’d much rather have cute-ish hair and nice makeup over fake nails any day.
Karen says
Hi Savannah,
I guess everyone has their own little thing that makes them feel good, yeah? In a way I’m happy I can’t wear those nails because I can only imagine all the time I’d have to spend at the salon, LOL!

Okay, that kid’s senior picture makeup was amazing, but I draw the line at him calling it a ‘natural look’. No one naturally looks like that, male or female. Get off Instagram, sweetie, and look at some IRL faces.
That was waaaay more information than I needed about applying cream blush, LOL. I’m guessing Sir John doesn’t have to pick the kids up from school or get supper on the table.
I’m reading a biography of the Mitford sisters. BTW, have you heard about Scribd? It’s an ebook subscription and I’m reading All The Books!!!
Karen says
Hi Suzanne,
I giggled at that a little too. I wonder what the over-the-top glam looks are like, WOW!
I haven’t heard of Scribd but I’ll have to look into it. 🙂
Hope your weekend is going great so far.

Thanks for all the great stuff you post on your Caturday blog. I always look forward to reading all the interesting links you post. I just finished “The Church of Small Things” by Melanie Shankle, and I am now reading her earlier works – “Sparkly Green Earrings”, “The Antelope in the Living Room”, and “Nobody’s Cuter Than You”. I loved Church of Small Things so much I got the rest of her books from the library. If you like Jen Lancaster, I highly recommend her books, as they are very funny memoirs. I Think you would really like her writing. Happy Cinco De Mayo – hope you are planning some yummy Mexican food for dinner!
Karen says
Hi Daphne,
You’re welcome! I’m glad you enjoy Saturday Surfing. Thank you for all the great book recs. I have a list that’s a mile long of things I want to read and I just added these titles.
What did you do for Cinco De Mayo? We ended up cheesing out and had pasta for dinner instead. LOL! It was easy and I was tired, what can I say?!

Lots of great links this week! Glad I have treatments for acne that aren’t cyanide, mercury, and cow poop LOL! And that senior picture is amazing. My senior picture was taken at a time where I didn’t really wear makeup – I’m wearing a very subtle lip gloss and clear mascara (what’s the point of that?!) On the plus side, at least I’m not wearing makeup trends that didn’t age well, LOL.
I went to our great niece’s unicorn-themed 4th birthday party today. Also saw my three great nephews who are 1, 2, and 4. The frosting on the cupcakes was so pigmented, I got stains! All the kids were a mess.
Karen says
My senior pic was pretty last minute, LOL! I did my hair and makeup at the last minute and put on these MASSIVE pearl earrings my mom let me borrow. I still can’t believe I didn’t wear any concealer!
OK, so you can’t tell me a cupcake story without telling me the flavor of the cupcakes. Vanilla? Lemon? Chocolate?

Yellow! And they had little unicorn and rainbow figurines on them. Lilly is super into unicorns right now.
Karen says
Cute! I suspect Connor will go through that phase soon, too!

She got a bit of mermaid stuff too! I’m planning on dressing as a mermaid for my next aerial act…
Windie says
Hi Karen,
What’s your go to for eyeliner and tight lining? I’ve used MAC and Bobbi brown gel liner and pat it down with powder but
mine just somehow dissolves. ?
BTW, loving your blog after all these years. I refer to it often when purchasing new makeup.
Karen says
Hi Windie,
I love Chanel 88 Noir Intense for black tightlining. Lately I’ve been into brown (looks less harsh on me), and for that I love MAC Coffee! 🙂
Windie says
Thank you!
Karen says
You’re welcome. 🙂 Navy blue looks great as a tightline too, by the way!

I always love the things you search out for us on Saturday Surfing and really enjoy reading them and finding out new things.
Btw, I’m in the UK and have no idea what Cinto de maya is!!
Karen says
Thanks, Sarah. 🙂 Here’s a NY Times article on Cinco de Mayo.
Hope you had a nice weekend!

Ha, that’s funny re the stuff from the 80s: Chanel’s Coco used to be one of my favorite perfumes! It’s quite sassy and full of character. Haven’t worn it in a few years though.
Lex recently posted … Summer vibes from By Terry, Kevyn Aucoin and NARS

My fave is Mademoiselle! I also like Eau Premiere. So sparkly!
Erin says
Hey I just came back to YouTube and noticed you haven’t posted in a year. Are you done with YouTube?
Karen says
Hi Erin,
It’s been challenging recording videos with the baby! I really hope to return soon; I might be able to once she gets started with pre-school in the summer. 🙂
Beth says
Hi Karen, what shade are you going to pick up in the Revlon Insta blush?
Karen says
Hi Beth,
I’m thinking of Berry Kiss. I have a coupon for Target that I need to put to good use. Have you tried the Insta Blushes yet?
Lupe says
Those flower pots are so cute!
Karen says
Thanks! I like them too.

I was all over the lash article, of course. 🙂 If I knew for a fact that my irises wouldn’t change color, I might actually give it a go! Unlike the author, I’d totally be going for the llama lashes, though. HAHA!
