Hiya, friend! Have you had breakfast yet? Some Saturdays I’m all about making a big breakfast with eggs, pancakes, bacon — the whole kit and caboodle — but sometimes I’m like “Naaah…” LOL!
Sometimes I need the rest more than the breakfast, ya know? So I’m just gonna chill on the couch with my cup of coffee, this episode of The Great British Baking Show Masterclass (Paul Hollywood is making baguettes!) and this delicious RX Chocolate Sea Salt Protein Bar.
Perhaps a grapefruit will be peeled and eaten… Perhaps not. We’ll see.
My friend Alis introduced me to these bars, and they’re SO good. She’s a busy hairstylist and works long days, so she’s always looking for quick healthy snacks that she can eat at the salon.
I think she gave me one of these bars while my roots were processing, haha!
Anyway, this one tastes like a brownie (and who doesn’t want brownies for breakfast?!), and they’re made with an amazingly simple list of ingredients. This one has dates, egg whites, almonds, cashews, chocolate, cocoa, “natural flavors” (eh, ya know, they want to keep their secret recipe) and sea salt.
The Chocolate Sea Salt one is my favorite flavor (Connor likes them too).
What have you been having for breakfast lately? Do you have a routine? Cereal? Oatmeal? A cheesy omelet?
In other news…
- This guy actually does pretty well! You go, Bob Herzog! (Facebook)
- Scientists ?? are having fun with Amazon reviews. They’re leaving reviews on everyday household products and beauty products like nail polish and dental floss, and describing how they use the products in actual scientific experiments.
Like, clear nail polish is used to apply pieces of brain to glass slides (no way!) and also comes in handy during species collection. (Apparently, so does dental floss, in case you were wondering.)
- Makeup artist Linda Cantello, a.k.a. THE INVENTOR OF THE SMOKY EYE, breaks down the history of the look and how it evolved in the ’90s with Tom Ford during his Gucci days.
According to Linda, if it takes you longer than two minutes to do, you’re doing it wrong. She recommends sketching the shape with a black pencil, and then building it out with a liquid eyeshadow.
- Cat ladies, this is totally a thing —> wedding pics ??? with your cat.
You wear your wedding dress, your cat hangs out with you (hopefully he or she is NOT too interested in clawing at your gown!), and a photographer captures the moment for prosperity.
Sadly, I met Tabs after I got married, but if he had been around, I would’ve done this in a heartbeat! Heck, El Hub probably would’ve made him his best man.
- I mean, there’s NO WAY my entire makeup collection could fit into this $14 acrylic organizer from Amazon, but I’m still intrigued by it. It gets four-and-a-half stars with almost 2,000 reviews, so it’s gotta be somewhat good, yeah?
- How did NASA’s first lady astronauts in the late-1970s handle things like menstruation and collecting urine samples in zero gravity when it had never been done before? Regarding bathroom hygiene during spaceflight, Smithsonian Space Shuttle Curator Valerie Neal says that, “They tried creating some sort of form-fitted plastic devices that you could tuck in close that would serve as a funnel, attached to a hose and plastic bag, but that was too messy.” Two women in the program were mothers, and they brought up the idea of adult-sized disposable diapers, which weren’t readily available at the time.
That’s NASA — and mom! — ingenuity for ya.
Oh, and if you need me today, I’ll be here trying to remove the remnants of this Chocolate Sea Salt bar from my molars. They’re tasty but CRAZY sticky!
Have a wonderful weekend.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I didn’t have any cat wedding pictures (Jiji is shy around strangers) but I took a picture with Quincy! He was really overweight at the time so i feel kind of bad about it.
Karen says
Aww, at least you have a pic though! That’s super sweet. 🙂
Isabella says
that makeup holder is for amateurs
if you go to the Smithsonian Air/space out in Virginia they have all the astronaut stuff there to see, like the food and underwear
and Amazon reviews can be a timesuck that I will save for later
Karen says
Yeah, it would be good for a few things, but not a completely collection!
That museum sounds really cool!
Isabella says
It’s worth the trip if u get to the DC area
Tatiana says
Gosh, those RX bars are so gooey and sticky. Toothpicks, floss and a good brushing are required after eating one. I’m not even sure they’re all that good for you. They’re basically candy or brownies with a tad more protein and fiber. I don’t find that they fill me up.
I love the cat/wedding photo thing. I would never have done it. We had Calcutta when we drove up to Tahoe to get married. She left a present for us on the bed while we were gone. Guess she wasn’t too please that we left her alone for one night. Dear Husband has graciously tolerated the cats and cat women in his life. I think if he wasn’t working so much he’d prefer a dog.
Have a great weekend! It’s super sunny and really warm down this way.
Karen says
This one has pretty clean ingredients, and I think the sugar only comes from the dates, so it’s not too bad. Just crazy sticky, LOL! Calcutta sounds like she was one sassy kitty.
How’s Nora doing, btw?
Tatiana says
Yeah, Calcutta ruled the house. We had one really comfy rocker that no one else could sit in. It was hers.
Nora is hanging in there these days. We’ve hit an equilibrium with her food and medications, so all indications in the cat box say she’s doing well. And she’s gaining back some of the weight she lost. Dear Husband is in Taiwan for business and she’s been extra loving to me in the mornings. Maybe she senses I’m a bit lonely.
All I can say is, after eating an Rx bar, brush those pearly whites really well, especially Connor’s. Unless she has amazing brushing skills for her age. I think it took Dear Daughter a while to get the hang of how well I wanted her to brush her teeth.
Miki says
Those scientific reviews of ordinary items was great! Haha love it. The things you can do with regular ol’ household stuff!
It’s cereal for me. If I was going to put effort into my breakfast, it would be oatmeal. Every time. I love a good, healthy oatmeal with berries and milk! However, I cannot wake up before I’ve had my coffee, but I also need to eat, so cereal it is. All. The. Time.
Karen says
Hi Miki,
Have you ever heard of overnight oats? You prep your oats and the milk the night before in a jar or a bowl, and let it sit in the fridge; the “oats” cook overnight, and in the morning, you have oatmeal!
Miki says
You’re right. I should do that! I’ve heard of that. I will try it, thanks! ❤
Miki says
Ok that video was kind of impressive! Haha! Who is he, he’s hilarious.
Karen says
Hi Miki,
Right?! He’s moving so fast, too! And talking the entire time. I can barely put on makeup and breathe. LOL!
Hope you’re having a nice weekend so far. Are you watching the game today?
Susan T. says
I have that makeup organizer and it holds a fair amount. Definitely not a whole makeup collection but it is very handy to have on the bathroom counter. I actually have two and took off the top part of one (It’s not attached), stacked the two drawer parts together with one of the tops and made a double tall organizer! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Susan,
Smart idea! I might end up grabbing one (or two) for the things I like to use daily. 🙂 How long have you had yours? Has it held up well?
Susan T. says
I’ve had mine for about 5 years and it’s held up just fine. 🙂
Sandy P says
I actually love these RX bars. Have been eating them for over two years. My physical therapist and Doctor are the ones who told me about them. I don’t eat them everyday but probably once a week.
Karen says
Hi Sandy,
I love them! What’s your fave flavor? Mine is definitely the sea salt and chocolate.
Amy says
The Bob video is hysterical! Love his aggressive blending. The makeup holder is perfect for the things you want to keep out all the time depending on the season, or for a few weeks at a time. I have acrylic organizers in two vanity drawers that work well. I agree with Tatiana that many of those bars can be sugary, but the good ones have sugar only from dates and are really quite nutritious! And so convenient on ridiculously busy days. Glad you found one you and Connor both like!
Karen says
Hi Amy,
My favorite part of the video is when he puts bronzer on, LOL! He does a pretty good job considering how fast he’s going and how he’s talking the entire time.
How’s your weekend going? Will you be watching the game today?
Amy says
Amen on Bob. So funny. My son is a Pats fan, having lived in New England for six years… so can’t avoid it! I’m agnostic on rooting for teams but understand when others aren’t. 😉
Hope you and El Hub have some good snacks lined up if you’re doing the game!
Katie says
I never realized until pretty recently that people actually peeled grapefruit to eat! I cut them in half, cut the flesh around the membranes, and eat with a spoon (or skip the membrane cutting if I have a grapefruit spoon).
Karen says
Ha! It was the exact opposite for me. I never ate a halved grapefruit until I was older (like seriously, in my 30s) and went on vacation and ordered one for breakfast. Previous to that I always peeled them, because that’s what my mom did.
Kim says
That bar sounds so good. 🙂 Too many carbs for me right now but, I’ll be keeping my eye on it. On workdays, I have a Kind bar every morning for breakfast. On weekends, if there’s time, I’ll cook (eggs, breakfast meat, etc).
The cat wedding photo is very sweet. 🙂 Well done, NASA moms!
