A week ago I was sitting on a beach in shorts, a T-shirt and flip-flops. Today, I’m parked in front of my computer in sweats, a turtleneck and rainbow striped toe socks. It’s freezing here in Nor Cal, yo!
If you’re reading this from warmer climes, please note: I envy you.
This morning I desperately needed to warm it up, Chris (I’m about to), so I snagged a chai tea latte from Starbucks (NOM!) and looked through the pictures I took last week.
A few things hit me…
…like, doesn’t Tabs look like a bird of paradise from certain angles?
It’s weird that I hardly wore any makeup on the trip (weird because I usually do). At a minimum, I usually fill in my brows and throw on a little concealer, but this time all I wore was an occasional gloss and some waterproof mascara.
I did buy a tube of Maybelline Full ‘N Soft Waterproof Mascara ($6) on the island because I forgot to bring a mascara, and eh, it was alright. I think it looks its best after two coats and resists smudging pretty well. If you’re looking for a better waterproof mascara for thicker, more dramatic lashes, Stila Lash Visor is a good one.
Because I wasn’t wearing much makeup, there were moments when I felt a little self-conscious, like at the mall or the grocery store, but definitely not at the beach.
Do you find you wear more or less makeup when you go on vacation? I guess it really depends on what you’re doing, but what’s typical for you?
Anywho, before I start shivering too bad to type (even my booty bones are frozen), I’m gonna try to warm up by web surfing. I got the boards. Care to come with? 🙂

I love that you went super-minimal. Vacation should be about relaxing and focusing on having fun. You still looked great in your pictures because it was obvious that you were enjoying yourself!
If I’m at the beach, especially in a really hot climate, I’ll typically wear much less, but if I’m someplace like Las Vegas, I’ll wear the usual amount during the day and go above and beyond for evening.

Vacation should be relaxing and not about just looking good!

It’s cold and snowy here in Ohio. 🙁 I would love to be somewhere warmer right now! I usually wear less makeup when I’m on vacation, especially in warm weather. Hope you had a great Saturday!

I definitely wear less. I think my mentality is something like: “These people are never going to see me again, so why should I try to impress them?”, haha! Also I just have better things to do on vacation than do my makeup (or hair, for that matter!).

I tend to keep things relatively natural on vacations, but you’re right – it totally depends on what I’m doing/where I am. There are some not-very-awesome pictures of me hiking in Glacier NP this summer. NGL, glasses + no makeup is NOT a look I’m very fond of – for myself, at least.
Your comment about your chai tea latte reminded me of my faaavorite winter SB drink: chai eggnog latte! If you like eggnog and have never had one, you must try it. It can be a bit thick, so I get mine cut with a little skim milk. But ooooh, man, it’s so freakin’ good.

my fave vacations are the ones where we do nothing. dont cook. dont hike, dont sight see. its all about sun, books and relaxation! 🙂

Hi Karen,
I hope someday I can visit Hawaii. I love the beach.
Usually i TRY to wear less make up, but I find it really hard to do sine I am used to see my features well defined. But hey my make up routine are not much. Just sunblock, MAC Studio fix 2 way cake, Maybelline Cats Eye Hypercurl mscara, Revlon eyebrow pencil and Revlon Matte powder blush in Berry. O ya…also Bath and Body Works Summer Vanilla in Berry on my lips.
i just can’t walk out into the world without having my war paint painted on.
cheers,
Arumanis

I hardly wear any makeup when on vacation although if I’m in a city I do try to have on minimal makeup – powder, brows maybe gloss. If its the beach or somewhere relaxing I’m headed to, its au naturel – I never want to waste time with makeup on holiday! 😀 Its really hot here. Wouldn’t I like a bit of that cold weather you’re having there

When i went to NYC this summer i was very precise with my makeup and wore “dramatic” (well dramatic for a 15 y.o.) and when i went to hawaii i didnt even wear any makeup

I’m not a huge fan of Maybelline Full n’ Soft either, it smudges a ton on me actually. I never wear makeup when I go on vacation. I’ll bring a tube of lipstick with me in case I feel like putting some on, but that’s about it.
Marian says
Makeup on vacation depends on where I’m going. If I’m going to a beach resort, then I generally don’t wear makeup.
If I’m going to New York for a week, then I step everything up a notch. I wear makeup always and take my best clothes.

Vacation for me is usually to visit my parents back home and I make it a point not to bring too much makeup coz I’d hate having to carry too much and then just end up breaking a few palettes. But I just HAVE to bring the basics like concealer, foundation, brow products, brushes, etc. I can be minimal on the eyeshadows when I’m on a trip. I haven’t gone to the beach in a while and the last time I did, I wasn’t into makeup yet. I’m thinking I might have to bring some waterproof concealer and waterproof mascara at the least coz I bet I’d feel just as self-conscious as you did. 😛

If i go sailing, i take some concealer and mascara with me, and for when im tanned, some nice highlighter.
Btw, you look great on that picture!

I don’t normally wear much if any makeup on vacation or even the summer for the most part. I live in South Carolina so in the summer it is very humid and for the most part makeup just melts off your face. My summer/vacation routine is concealer where needed, waterproof mascara and a light neutral gloss.

I would KILL for Southern California weather. It’s -15C here (5 degrees F) right now. Trade places? 🙂

First of all, I totally laughed at the Chris Cross Jump (because an acquaintance was sporting a CC hair cut recently and I had that song stuck in my head for days). 🙂
There are many days, vacation or not, that I wear only tinted sunscreen, blush and mascara. I really can’t get away with no blush because I’m paler than death. And the mascara? Well, you know I like tranny lashes. 🙂
Lastly, I think Birds of Paradise (birds) are some of the coolest things ever. The flowers are pretty too. Just like Tabs!
