The Ko Olina Resort & Marina on Oahu, Hawaii
Hey, boo. 🙂 Tabs and I just got back from breakfast in the front yard. There’s this cool kitty salad bar out there that has the freshest cat grass in Novato (they say they’re also getting catnip soon). Seriously, TO DIE!
It’s barely 11 here, and it’s already steamy hot outside. Looks like flip-flops and shorts are in order (and a bucket of sunscreen). My grand plans for the day involve my bum in a deck chair, multiple glasses of homemade iced tea and a stack of magazines, ahh…
I’m curious — what can you tell me about homemade ice cream? Have you ever made it before? My muffin top and I would love to hear some tips.
WHOA! The tide’s coming in fast. Can you catch a few e-waves with me before you jam? Grab your boogie board because surf’s up!

I made homemade ice cream all the time in the summer months. I prefer to start with a custard base on mine, although, it does “set” pretty hard when you freeze it. I love my standard vanilla, but have made multiple fruit flavors (Strawberry, peach-raspberry, and huckleberry being the faves!), along with adding a chocolate in various forms….It’s really not super difficult…just takes a little time to make the base, and then you have to listen to the machine run for a while.
Karen says
Hi Sara,
Thanks for the tips. I haven’t unpacked the machine yet, but am hoping to make some sort of low-fat sort of fruity concoction soon!

It’s already warm here too – and unfortunately one of the big trees that shades my back patio SO nicely lost a major branch in the wind storm yesterday. That’s going to make the back patio a lot less desirable to sit on this summer, ARGH! And I’d just bought a nice patio set, too . . . Oh well.
Today is my first day of summer vacation, WOO HOO!!! Yesterday I got all signed out at school, then went to graduation last night.
Right now the bf and I are still in our pajamas, watching the US vs England World Cup. I think I’ll try to get him to buy a BBQ this afternoon . . . Been talking about it for 2 years now, it’s time 🙂 Especially with the patio set – *perfect* for silflay 🙂 (eating al fresco).
Karen says
Hi Hyzenthlay,
It’s been mad windy here lately too. We have a huge oak tree in the back and one of these days I’m afraid it’s going to crash through the living room (knock on wood).
You have an umbrella with your patio set, right? I hope it’s big enough to offer some protection against that Davis summer heat!
So, what are your plans for the week now that school’s out?
Nina says
Its goshdarned hot here too! The Hubs and I went to his Brazilian Jujitsu school for their quarterly test (he got an additional 2 stripes on his bluebelt yay!) … had lunch, picked up dinner and now were just chillaxing.
I love the True Blood feature that you put up above. Thank you ma’am!
Karen says
You’re welcome. Are you stoked for the show tonight? I can’t wait!
Nina says
Yes I am! Im currently reading Dead and Gone so its safe to say that Sookie fehvurrr is high and running in our house.
The Hubs doesnt get it… I just cannot wait to see my Eric! 😀

That video of Venice made my day, thank you!
I lived and went to school there last summer for a month and I miss it more every day!
Also, someone I know has an ice cream machine and we made some awesome ice cream. It’s really simple and you can get creative! It’s simple if you just do the milk or cream and go for it, but you can get fancy and make a nice base. I would try mixing some pureed and whole fruit chunks into a vanilla mix! I bet it would be delish!

what i love about making my own ice cream is how i can experiment in a lot of different ways. i can make the standard ice cream (via custard base) or i can use soy milk, or even yogurt as a base and go from there!
also many ways to add topings as well. you can either add it with the ice cream making process or opt to do a mix-in. kind of like cold stone, except you can refreeze it so it’s not all mushy.
