Lipstick, lipgloss — whatever I’ve got on my lips — yeah, I usually like to take it off before I eat, just because I don’t eat in the most…graceful way.
Girl, when I eat, I’m hungry. I kinda shovel the food into my mouth, which I’m sure is mortifying my mom at the moment, but whatever. It’s not like I’m at a State dinner or anything. I’m usually in my living room, and it’s me and a baby, El Hub and a cat. And an episode of Gilmore Girls. So nobody is watching me that closely, but I still like to take off any lip products.
I’m sure part of that is habit because I’ve been doing it since I was a teenager. I just take my napkin and blot whatever I’ve got going on, and then I eat. It just makes my world a little neater and — how shall I say this? — makes me look less like a clown as I eat.
I don’t know… Are you one of those talented people who can wear a matte red lip and successfully eat soup, a main dish and dessert without getting red lipstick all over the place?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. TGIF, my friend! 🙂 Is anyone else seeing Rogue One? El Hub and I got tickets for this afternoon. I gotta be honest, I’m pretty excited about the movie, but I’m very excited about the popcorn.

This is a huge reason I’m not great at wearing lipstick. If I eat (which is pretty often) it’s instantly gone and messed up, even long-wearing stuff. I also drink a ton of water (I’m never not thirsty), which doesn’t help.
Katie says
I don’t usually take it off, but all that means is that I usually end up with lipstick all over my chin! I’m hoping to see Rogue One over the holidays! It looks so good. Have fun!! (Isn’t movie theater popcorn the best?)
Fran says
I guess I’m lucky, because I haven’t really had lipstick smear because of eating! Every once in a while I get a formula (usually a gloss) that somehow ends up all over the place (nose, cheeks, chin… ), but it just gets there mysteriously, not from eating. That’s a lip product I just have to return, honestly, there’s no hope for it and me together.
My lipstick does partially come off whenever I eat, and I feel a need to re-apply right after eating, so, blotting before actually might make the whole process go a bit more smoothly — less chance of ending up with too much lipstick on from re-applying. Plus I suppose there’s really no good reason to eat lipstick, which is probably where most of it’s going, although I don’t suppose it’s actually harmful to eat it; but, Karen, I think I’m going to start blotting before eating!

Yes, I always remove lip products (even lip balm) before eating. I don’t like the thought of eating it off my food and it’s just unappetizing seeing it on my food.
Ditte K. says
I also remove any lip product – mostly because I don’t want to eat the product as well. I am sure that is quite unhealthy 🙂
Divina says
Girl, your makeup is FABULOUS. Those colors are magnificent on you! I do not remove my lipstick as my food does it for me. 🙂
Karen says
Thanks, Divina! Happy Caturday!

All off! Completely wipe it all off before I eat anything. Salad dressing is the worst, all the olive oil makes a terrible mess. Even the long life stuff which kind of defeats the purpose I guess.
Erin says
I don’t but I should! I’m so messy sometimes. The only think I really get away with is Sushi or something delicate and bite sized like cocktail foods.

I am part of the talented ones I suppose… I know my mom or my coworkers are always amazed when after a whole meal my lipstick is still looking freshly applied. Sometimes I have to touch up in the corners and slightly on the “inside” of the bottom lip. But this is only if I have lunch or dinner out of the house. At home, I can’t stand to keep lipstick on when I eat.
Karen says
What’s the secret, Laura? BECAUSE I NEED TO KNOW!
Savannah says
Not normally, unless it’s a sandwich that I can’t tear apart with my hands ha ha! And unless the dish is particularly oily/greasy most of the time my lip look survives.
Karen says
LOL re: the sandwich! I always tear mine apart too. 🙂
Lauren says
For the past 2 months I can only eat very small, soft food on one side because of a dental nightmare, so I haven’t been removing lipstick. Normally, I can eat like it’s my job and I would blot my lips only if I had a lot of lipstick on.
Karen says
Oh no, Lauren! Dental stuff is so scary. I’m so sorry! I had to go through a lot of that when I was younger and it’s awful. Are your teeth getting better?
Sandy P says
Interesting question!! I have never thought about removing my lipstick. Maybe my age?? None of my peers do it….hint..we are old!! Lol
Laura says
I’m 35, and I have never thought about it either. However, if I did take off my lipstick before eating, I would have to apply lip balm after because my lips are so dry.
Karen says
Hi Laura,
My lips are dry too! What lip balms do you use/like? My favs are the one by Paul & Joe and Nuxe. The Hourglass Oil is great too, just very pricey.
Laura says
I just use Burt’s Bees vanilla bean. It works great, and it’s cheap.
Karen says
You’re young at heart, Sandy! 🙂 Happy Saturday to you. What are you up to today?
Kiss & Make-up says
Oh I am not a graceful eater either, lol. I’m like dog afraid that they’ll take its bowl of food away at any time, I ravage whatever’s in front of me 😉 That said, I don’t take off my lipstick before a meal. But I never wear super bright colors anyway, so it’s not like much can happen.
Chris25 says
Now that you mention it, I’m not as messy as I could be. I don’t take it off because I actually need to test most of my lipsticks for endurance and wear time. It’s all done in the name of the blog. 🙂
Laarni says
First time that i’ve ever encountered this question, Karen!!!! My answer is I don’t! haha!
