Wait — the weekend’s almost over? How the heck did that happen!? After breakfast this morning (Trader Joe’s mini bagels with low-fat cream cheese), I settled down on the couch to do some reading. I wish I could say I was challenging myself with something deeply cerebral like War and Peace, but I opted for mind candy instead. 🙂 Enter Lauren Conrad’s L.A. Candy (yes, I went there!), and issues of Women’s Health, Cooking Light and Make-Up Artist magazine.
There was also supposed to be a cup of Kona coffee in this shot, but I finished it before picking up the camera up, oops!
It’s days like today that I wish we were neighbors… Then you could come over; I could make another pot (or two) of coffee, and we could read magazines, talk makeup and watch bad reality TV together — in other words, recharge!
Don’t get me wrong, Tabs and El Hub are great, but I miss my girlfriends, ya know? Seriously, when it comes to beauty and bad television, they have very little of interest to add to the conversations, LOL!
I guess that’s why I like these open threads. You might be a computer screen away, but it’s almost like we’re meeting for coffee and shooting the shizz.
If you’re new to the open thread, basically we just chat in the comments. Any topic you like, from your new favorite drugstore beauty find (Rimmel makes mine!), to the kitten you’re thinking of adopting, a problem at school/work, your new favorite TV show, or just drop in to say hola.
See you in a few! 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Hey Karen. Long time, no post for me I know. I’ve never been to this open thread thing. Oh, I would loooove to come over and watch bad tv. I love RuPaul’s Drag Race. LOL
Just curious to know if you’ve heard of the new mufe cream shadow/liners. Of course you should know about the black one that’s at Sephora, but now they are in a rainbow of colors but only at the boutique so far. I’m hoping they will be at Sephora, too. I have green, blue, fuchsia and orange. These things are paint pots on steroids. 🙂
Also, I wasn’t crazy about the HD blush until I tried again yesterday. I found the perfect shade: #12 First Kiss. It’s hot. I’ll be buying that soon. 🙂
Rachael says
I love RuPaul’s Drag Race too! It’s like a cross between Project Runway and America’s Next Top Model, but better. LOL
Karen says
Hi Shontay,
It’s good to hear from you! How are things on your end?
I’ve heard of both RuPaul’s Drag Race and MUFE’s Cream Shadows. I haven’t gotten around to checking out them out — YET! 🙂 Paint Pots on steroids? I’m so there?
Glad to hear you like the HD Blush. I’ve tried two shades and can’t wait to play with more.
shontay says
I’m good Karen. I think I am on the verge of a new job, hopefully!
Karen says
That’s exciting. Are you still going to be with Saks, or are you moving onto other pastures?
shontay says
Definitely other pastures. 🙂
Stef says
What magazine subscriptions do you get Karen? Or, anyone else.
These days I get: Allure and Bon Appetit. I’m letting my subscriptions to Real Simple (too expensive), Rachael Ray (1 out of every 2 recipes I’ve made have wrong ingredient quantities) and InStyle (over half of the pages are ads) expire.
But I’m really looking to add a new subscription to the list. Suggestions?
.-= Stef’s last blog post… Our guide to Awesomely Good Teen Television =-.
shontay says
Hey Stef. I get Allure, Entertainment Weekly and US Weekly. Somehow my Cosmo stopped coming to me, so I have to look into that. Wow that sucks about InStyle.
My passions are beauty and entertainment so that’s why I have those subscriptions. Maybe you’d like O magazine?
Stef says
You know, I don’t think I’ve ever bought an O Mag, that’s a good idea, thanks! Oprah wouldn’t steer me wrong.
Allure’s great, isn’t it? Every makeup lover should get it.
I miss Domino magazine (interior design). Did anyone get that? They always had the best photos and ideas.
Beth says
I’m in the UK and we don’t have a specific makeup magazine over here. There are a couple of “hair and makeup” ones, but they suck.
I always check out the bigger bookstores if I’m near one because they sometimes have Allure as an import, so I pay a fortune for it but its worth it I think.
other than that, I regularly read Elle, InStyle, Marie Claire and Zest, which is a health & fitness magazine. I don’t really follow the advice but it means I *look* like I make the effort LOL
.-= Beth’s last blog post… Smashbox O Glow & O Gloss..and little Dior too =-.
Karen says
Second the O rec. I don’t subscribe, but I always like reading it while I’m at the bookstore.
Oh, and I miss Domino too. RIP!
shontay says
Allure gives you great ideas on new products or looks to try. And I always turn into a major geek when I see a product that I own in there.
Karen says
Hi Stef,
Right now I get Real Simple and Better Homes and Gardens. I had Allure and Vogue a while back but both of my subscriptions expired right before I moved, and I haven’t had the chance to renew.
I’m thinking of signing up for Cooking Light! Most of the recipes seem pretty easy to follow and they have a good nutritional break down on each of ’em. I’ve never liked how you have to flip to the back of Real Simple to read the calorie counts, ya know? If you like cooking you might enjoy it.
Andrea says
I really like Elle, and Harper’s Bazaar.. Elle is better for articles in my opinion, but Harper’s is better for fashion! (Harper’s usually has some interesting, unique photo shoots. Oh, and Harper’s also has a feature called “A Fashionable Life” where they have a person in the fashion industry discuss the decor in their home, with pictures!)
Stef says
Ooo, love the sound of Harper’s! Which again, I don’t think I’ve ever bought before.
Nancy says
i’m a fan of women’s health and glamour…
Stef says
Better Homes and Gardens, eh? I never thought of that. Maybe it could fill my Domino void.
Karen, I’m surprised you didn’t say Photoshop User. I get it at my office and all the tutorials would be so up your alley.
.-= Stef’s last blog post… Dr Dennis Gross All-in-One Tinted Moisturizer =-.
Karen says
Heck yah, BH&G kicks arse. Of the Pshop mags I read Photoshop Creative, but it’s one of the UK mags, so it’s hella expensive. I visit tutorial9, abduzeedo and lynda.com (yay!) a lot tho.
I think Lynda is great. SO many great videos on Pshop and Final Cut as well as vids on project management and creativity. I’ve had an account for years.
Toni says
Stef,
I just got an InStyle subscription (I only got it because it was a $5/year special at Amazon), and I totally agree about all the ads. I have been getting Lucky magazine, and it’s fun for those of us who like to shop! I do see fun accessories in it, as well as some great makeup stuff, but the clothing featured isn’t something for this mid-40’s stay at home mom to wear! LOL!
I like Better Homes & Gardens, so I think that would be a nice one to get.
Have you considered going to the library and checking out magazines? That might save you some money, and you don’t have to store it, recycle it, or throw it away.
Paula Rose says
I REALLY like People Stylewatch! Good blend of clothing, accessories and makeup. I subscribe to an embarrassing amount of other mags!
Susan says
I’ve become a magazine fiend, but just because I keep getting these awesome offers in the mail to get a subscription for like $8.00 when newsstand price would be about $45! I take glamour, harper’s, martha stewart living, taste of home, better homes & gardens, and southern living. After I’m done with them I donate them to our hospital for waiting rooms, if I don’t keep them for recipes/ideas.
Beth says
I’m reading L.A Candy too! I saw The Hills for the first time a couple of weeks ago and became totally hooked, so I knew I’d love the book. It’s nice to have a no-brainer read sometimes! I’m a teensy bit addicted to checking out People.com to see what ridiculousness Heidi and Spencer are up to. Its a love to hate them kinda thing, you know?
I’ve totally wasted my weekend and now, at 9:15pm on Sunday I’m a little annoyed with myself so I’ve got to try harder to be productive this week. My first job tomorrow will be to make a to-do list!
The most strenuous thing I’ve done today is paint my nails (Rimmel 60 seconds polish in Grey Matter) and they’re a total mess. I’ve put polish over the top of my gels and lets just say I’m not the best nail painter (hence the gels in the first place!).
.-= Beth’s last blog post… Smashbox O Glow & O Gloss..and little Dior too =-.
Karen says
The first few seasons of The Hills are really good. It’s a little sad to watch Heidi self-distruct under Spencer’s warped spell though. 🙁 I saw a pic of her recently and she looks sooooo different. I guess if it makes her happy…
Did you ever watch Laguna Beach? It’s the show that’s the predecessor of The Hills. The first two seasons are most excellent for letting your brain turn into mush.
Beth says
I know, it is sad – she’s had so much work done and she was a pretty girl to begin with. The latest pics I saw were of her revealing her new bikini body and she’s all out of proportion now. Huge boobs and the teensiest little waist. I wonder what made her do it. I’ve been watching the two of them on the show and I find myself thinking “you’re a smart girl, you must SEE that he’s a jackass?!” I mean if your friends all hate a guy, there is usually a reason for that. But like you say, if it makes her happy…
At the moment I’m as far as season 3 of The Hills, but I’ll definitely check out Laguna Beach too. I could use some brain-mush time!
.-= Beth’s last blog post… Smashbox O Glow & O Gloss..and little Dior too =-.
Karen says
I think I saw those pics on Pink is the New Blog (LOOOOVE TRENT!) too. Her face looks pretty, but it lacks the spark she had before. Le sigh. Somebody needs to kick Spencer’s ass, for reals.
If you’ve made it through three seasons of The Hills then you will loooooove Laguna Beach! When I’m feeling blah I like to pop in season one and left my brain float away on a fluffy cloud.
Oh, and re: The Hills did you happen to notice that the puppy Heidi gets for Christmas just disappears?
Andrea says
Speaking of The Hills, I love it, but I think I love The Aftershow even more! It airs on MTV Canada, but I think you can watch it online in the US. In one episode they discuss the puppy and try to figure out what happened to it. Anyway, it’s just really funny and I love the hosts! (Dan and Jessi).
Karen says
LOL, I’ve caught a few of the aftershow eps and they are indeed very funny! I love the captions and drawings they do.
Beth says
It’s so funny that you should say that! I was wondering where Bella went!
It’s like in the last season of Friends when Rachel’s baby disappeared and re-appeared when it fit the storyline. Convenient, huh? LOL
I’m off to bed now (it’s 10:45pm and I need to be up at 6am – blah!) but I’ll check out Laguna Beach on tvshack.net tomorrow and let you know what I think. I’m sure I’ll love it!
I hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekends!

Nothing really, if you don’t count being stuck in Sweden for over four days now because of the volcanic ash cloud over Europe… Luckily I’m staying with my friends longer now and then on Thursday I leave for Copenhagen by train and then I’ll have to see if I can catch a bus/train from there.

I’ve spent most of my weekend working on papers and to procrastinate, I’ve been checking out Sephora’s website, tempted to use that 15% off coupon… I’ve been intrigued by a couple of things you’ve posted about, Karen… I might have to take the plunge on something, but I don’t know what!
Also, I want to second a suggestion to O Magazine. LOVE IT.
Karen says
Hi Liza,
I remember that feeling of Sunday study procrastination VERY well. It’s one thing I don’t miss about school.
What are you thinking of getting for the Sephora sale?
Nancy says
2 reasons why i procrastinate: 1)…….
Karen says
LOLZ!
Rita says
Something terrible happened to me this week. A virus came and ate my work computer while I was browsing makeup (oops!). The virus protection program was not able to prevent it from happening (???). I’ve so had it with PCs. Fortunately, I’m a Mac girl (yes, both of them) at home. Then I went and got myself an iPhone, so I can browse limitlessly!
Karen says
Oh no!! I hope you didn’t lose anything important.
How do you like your new iPhone? I hope you got a cute case too!
Rita says
Nothing major, and I’m told that the files can be safed. iPhone’s working just fine, I’m using it right now. Although I’m still looking for a neat case.
Karen F says
Hi Karen – Happy Sunday ! With help from your review, I used my Sephora 15% off coupon this week and bought Urban Decay Eden Primer. Loving it. Then yesterday at Ulta I got the “mini’s” set of Essie’s summer colors. I’m wearing Playa Del Platinum on my hands today…it is such an unusual color…I can’t decide if I like it or not! The other colors are gorgeous, definitely pedi colors for me!
Thanks so much for all you do. Love your blog!!
Karen
Karen says
Hi Karen F,
So good to hear from you! How have you been?
I’m really glad to hear you love Eden primer. Isn’t it all sorts of amazing? I think the original PP isn’t nearly as fab.
BTW, I was wearing Playa Del Platinum on my fingers for most of last week, too. 🙂
yiota says
yay for open threads!
i went to sephora yesterday and bought the Too Faced bronzed and beautiful set.. i still havent tried it out but im excited! Im also supposed to buy a cleanser and moisturizer..but i have so many samples that i havent tried yet so im not sure which to buy..so thats it for my 15% off. The samples i have are: Purity, Hope in a jar, Clinique 3 step, Juice cleanser, Boscia cleanser.. i tried out the clinique one today and i really like the moisturizer!
Also, I went to MAC and i dont know why but i can never have the guts to buy something from there loll. Im thinking rubenesque paint pot, undercurrent eyeliner( I LOVE IT!), blacktrack fluidline, creme d’nude lipstick(or angel).. maybe Dame blush as well. Im getting them from the Bay and i have a discount every month for a year where if i buy 50$ i get 10$ off.
Soo.. here are my questions for you girls:
1) What concealer would you suggest for blemishes and undereye puffiness? Im 17 so I don’t need any anti-aging treatments 😛 I just wake up with slightly puffy eyes.
2) Which cleanser and moisturizer do you like? I have pretty normal skin.. it’s dry in the morning then gets a little oily at night.
3) What’s the best tinted moisturizer? Do you need a finishing powder and primer with it? A sephora lady told me that with the Hourglass one you don’t need any of those.
Sorry for the long post!
Beth says
I’d totally recommend the Clinique 3 step cleanser/exfoliating lotion/moisturiser.
Not everyone likes it, but its the one thing I always go back to. I really like using a wash-off cleanser as when I use the wipe-off ones I never really feel like my skin is properly clean.
I hope you find something that you like!
.-= Beth’s last blog post… Smashbox O Glow & O Gloss..and little Dior too =-.
Karen says
Hi Yiota,
Here’s my 2 cents. 🙂
What concealer would you suggest for blemishes and undereye puffiness? I’d have to go w/Time Balm concealer for blemishes and a combo of a de-puffing rollerball (like Clinique’s All About Eyes Serum… I’ve heard that Garnier’s is pretty good too) and Time Balm for the undereye area. Time Balm is the BEST concealer out there right now, hands down, and I’ve tried a lot. If you find it too heavy for your undereye area then try MAC Select Coverup or MAC Select Moisturecover.
Which cleanser and moisturizer do you like? Philosophy Purity Made Simple all the way, baby! It removes makeup and cleans without drying out my skin. As for moisturizer, my dry skin has been loving Clarins Hydraquench Cream.
What’s the best tinted moisturizer? Do you need a finishing powder and primer with it? A sephora lady told me that with the Hourglass one you don’t need any of those. Even though it’s quite pricey, Laura Mercier’s Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer is my fave. It’s got buildable coverage, doesn’t streak and is easy to blend. It stays on all day long, too, yet it doesn’t feel heavy. I like to set it with MAC Prep+Prime powder, but you don’t have to if you don’t want to.
yiota says
Thanks!
Laura Mercier’s TM(42$) is actually less expensive than Hourglass (55$) so I think I should try that out! Only problem is that i need a brush now.. I just don’t know if it’s worth it though, because I’m going to greece in a month and i’ll be wayy darker then, so i dont think its worth buying 2 shades.
I’ll try out my Purity cleanser sample and see how that is 🙂
Karen says
Are you looking for a brush to apply the tinted moisturizer with? You probably don’t need it with Laura’s. I just use fingers — I find it warms up the product and makes it even easier to apply/blend. Plus I’m lazy, LOL!
yiota says
ooh that’s even better! loll
anything to save money 😛
Hyzenthlay says
1. I’ve had good experiences with the MAC Select Concealer. I haven’t tried any others, though, so I can’t say if it’s the best – it just works for me.
2. I LOVE Philosophy PMS, Microdelivery Exfoliating Wash, Hope in a Jar, and I’m switching from Aveeno Ultra-Calming Moisturizer with SPF 15 to Clinique SuperDefense with SPF 25 for summer. I’ve been using the Philosophy line for over a year now, and I get TONS of compliments on my skin, and I usually wear tinted moisturizer.
3. For the past year I was wearing Aveeno TM, but it’s apparently been discontinued. I bought Laura Mercier TM at Sephora last weekend and I’m obsessed with it already. Again, I haven’t tried many other TMs, but I’d say that it’s definitely worth a look for you!
Andrea says
Omg, I have that discount thing too! I love it, but I have a feeling it makes me spend more than I might otherwise… hehehe!
Paula Rose says
1) Laura Mercier makes a concealer duo that comes with translucent powder at the bottom, and I <3 this so much!
2) For cleansing: I use Shu Uemura a/o cleansing oil and Cliniques 7 day scrub (every other day) For Moisture: I just switched to Korres Wild Rose day cream and OMG!!!!! Im a convert! The wild rose mask is insane as well. I noticed a difference after just one application of the mask!
3) I would shrivel up and die if LMercier stopped making her tinted moisturizer! I use it on clean, moisturized skin. I don't use primers 🙁

My boyfriend is taking me to see Kick Ass: the Movie today. I still want to go see How to Train Your Dragon, but he doesn’t, *sigh*. We had a tough night last night, my boyfriend’s new Droid got stolen! About 20 phone calls to the person, who picked up once, and multiple text messages that I knew were read… all we got was his voice mail. And I left many an angry voice mails. Hell hath no furry like a woman’s scorn, especially a redheaded woman lol. On the plus side, I got to take out my frustration from a certain issue onto someone else. I felt much better after yelling at the voice mail… I highly suggest it for anyone who needs to let off some steam.
Karen says
I honestly believe that what you send out to the universe comes back to you, so I really hope that person comes to his senses and does the right thing and returns your BF’s phone.
Let me know what you think of Kick Ass. I kinda wanted to see it because of how comic booky it looked, but I’m not really into movies with lots of violence (and I heard this one has it in heaps).
Rachael says
Verizon will let us know if anyone tries to activate that phone since it will come up as stolen in their system. Which is a huge plus and hopefully he can get it back soon. Course the battery was almost dead when he last had it, so hopefully the thief couldn’t get much out of it.
Kick Ass was alright, it was pretty humorous in some scenes. I’m naturally jumpy so every time someone would shoot off a gun of some form. It got pretty bloody in some scenes. Too much blood for my taste, so my popcorn and Icee set aside forgotten. I’m sure How to Train Your Dragon will get a much better review from me.
Karen says
I think you’ll love How to Train Your Dragon. The story is solid and it doesn’t feel like a kids movie at all. Tell that boy he needs to make it up to you for making you to watch such a bloody flick!
Nancy says
i LOVED how to train your dragon!! it was such a great movie! my hubbie and i loved it just as much as our daughters did. i don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
Rachael says
Glad it gets good raves from my fellow beauty lovers! I’ll be sure to check it out!

I was just wishing this morning that I had girls to get together with . . . sit on my patio with coffee or tea and chat. Most of my friends have moved out of town, though, and the one who is still in town works on Sunday mornings. *le sigh* I’m also wishing for an excuse to get the patio set I have been dreaming about since I saw it last weekend at Costco. If i could just get the bf to buy a new BBQ then we’d need a place to sit outside! (Conversely, I know that if I get the patio set, there will be more pressure on him to get the BBQ, but having bought a new MBP yesterday I’m feeling like holding close to my money. Perhaps the end of the month, when I get paid again 🙂
It is SO gorgeous outside right now – 72 degrees, with blue skies, and our patio is covered by trees.
I went to pick up the Physicians Formula TM that you thought might compare to LM this morning at CVS, and I got the two lightest shades. I figure I’m either one of them now, or a mixture of them. I was not thrilled about spending the money, but they have a good return policy, and when I walked past the PF section (I’d pulled the TM from a different section) I discovered that all of their stuff is 40% off right now! WOO HOO! So I decided to try a bronzer, too. I’m hoping the colors work for me 🙂
Karen says
While I don’t miss the allergies, I do miss warm Davis spring weather. It’s such a beautiful time of year there! I remember walking all over campus to my classes in the spring and just loving it, le sigh.
And yay for find the PF stuff on sale. If you can happen to have a camera or a camera phone and feel like swatching your colors on your arm please send me a pic! A couple of girls were asking about the colors…
Hyzenthlay says
I can do the swatches with my iPhone – and I was one of the ones asking for shades, too 🙂
ANY time you want to come and hang out in Davis again, you are more than welcome here! Just let me know 🙂
We could do coffee/tea/coffeecake here and then go to Dos and sit on the patio. Doesn’t that sound like the PERFECT spring day?
Karen says
I’d love that (both the iPhone swatches and hanging out)!
That does sound like the perfect spring day. I’ll bring the Zyrtec Liquigels and we’ll officially call it a party. 😀
Hyzenthlay says
I have the Costco version of Zyrtec if you forget yours 🙂 You get enough pills for the whole YEAR in one bottle – and it’s like $15!
Karen says
Snap, I keep forgetting to pop by there to pick up a bucket. I spent about the same amount for name-brand Zyrtec at Tar-ghay a few weeks ago. Shoot!
You know what I miss about Davis? Warm nights. It’s been forever since I’ve lived in a place where I can walk around after dark in shorts. It’s such a small thing, but it’s a pleasure.
Hyzenthlay says
It is lovely to have those warm evenings . . . though I want it to cool off when I go to bed. 80+ at night is too warm! Luckily we shouldn’t be there for at least 2 or 3 months . . . And they’re predicting rain on Tuesday.
Karen says
Oh gosh, I totally forgot about that feeling. It’s been ages since I’ve slept with the fan on! Wow…
Can’t say that I miss summers there. Ya know, I wish I tried frying an egg on the sidewalk when I lived there. Never quite got around to giving it a go!
Nancy says
so, i finally cleaned up today (i love my “do-nothing” days) and tried my new drugstore finds: the sonia kashuk creme blush in rosey and my revlon foundation. i wanted to try the new colorstay ACTIVE foundation, but had a REALLY hard time finding it anywhere. finally did at the grocery store. haven’t purchased drugstore foundation in such a long time, and was really apprehensive. i’ve got in on right now, and if this works out, looks like i may be using the regular colorstay when my mac mineralize satinfinish is gone….gotta go: the hubbie just got home, and i’m making hamburger stroganoff from scratch for dinner.
Karen says
Hi Nancy,
A big yay for new drugstore goodies. How are you liking the SK Creme blush?
Nancy says
i really like it! i tried creme blushes years ago, but didn’t have positive experiences with them, so avoided them altogether. but with the help of beauty blogs such as yours that really helps a girl out with application techniques and brush use, i thought i’d give it a try again. glad i did!
Karen says
Yay for expanding your beauty horizon with cream blush. 🙂 I don’t know if I remember you mentioning it, but do you happen to have Sonia’s Flat Top Blusher Brush? It’s SOOOO awesome with cream blushes.
Nancy says
i do, i do! and only because of your awesome review on it! 😉 is use it for my foundation application.

I only discovered your site recently, but i’ve been dropping by for updates many times a day. Very fun and addictive! I love Tabs 🙂
Karen says
Hi Midori,
It’s nice to meet you. 🙂 What’s your essay on? I hope you’re almost done!
Nina says
Hey ladies!
I didnt get much sleep last night – Hubs and I foolishly decided to make a pot of coffee at 9pm. I was up til 4am reading. Weirdly enough, I was up at 8:30 and decided to do a Target run. No makeup purchases – mostly household stuff (boring!!!).
Got home, had brunch and we’ve been lazy since then. I did 2 loads of laundry, a small batch of home made pico de gallo for dinner (we didnt have lunch!), read a bit and now im about to do a workout DVD.
We still want to adopt Napoleon (the outdoor cat who sorta lives with us) but I think he sensed that we were gonna have him checked out at the kitteehh clinic last Friday because he was nowhere to be found that morning! Trying again this Friday!.
How have y’all been?
Karen says
Hi Nina,
LOL, if I had coffee at 9 p.m. I’d be awake for three days straight. I hope it was delicious, at least!
So what’s the story with Napoleon? Did he decide to adopt you like Tabs did with me?
Nina says
It was! The coffee was Katz’s Maple French Toast. So fragrant!!!! LOL.
Weve learned our lesson tho. No more coffee @ night. Didnt help that we had coffee w/ breakfast and after lunch too. Bad bad.
Here in our neighborhood, almost everyone feeds stray cats. We have a pretty thriving stray cat community. Our first “regular” stray was a tuxedo cat that we call Jester (or Jessie). He either hangs out by our front porch or somewhere by the back. We feed him what our indoor cats dont eat, but in the end, decided to get him a separate dry food.
In between Jester and Napoleon, there was this really chubby gray cat that would come over and demand food – but because he was so friendly and sociable, we figured someone actually owned him. We called him Fat Gray. After a while though, Fat Gray disappeared. A few weeks after, this really young kitty came sauntering over and drank some of our water. We noticed someone cut his tail — 🙁 … he was pretty friendly for a stray and almost immediately let us pet him.
We started calling him Napoleon and because he was so cute, we decided it was time to make him safe to come inside our house. He has tried several times to do so … we were supposed to bring him to the vet last Friday but he made himself scarce. Were trying again this Friday. If he gets the all clear (eg no FLV etc etc) then hes going to adopt us – like Tabs did with you! 😀
Long story LOL… I am rambling for some reason!
Karen says
That coffee sounds all sorts of delicious. I love flavored coffee, especially anything with a vanilla or caramel twist.
I’m also really envious of the folks who can drink coffee after dinner. My BBF Cindy is practically immune to caffeine; I swear that girl can chug a whole bucket of java at 10 p.m. and be fast asleep by 10:30. It’s totally not fair.
How cute that your neighborhood is stray cat central! It sounds like heaven for CCLs, ha ha! The only other kitty in our neck of the woods is a blue-eyed black and white cat who I’ve named Coco. I’m pretty sure she belongs to the neighbors, but I wouldn’t mind if she loved me more than her current owners.
I hope Napoleon comes back soon and gets the all clear! You need another kitteh in your life. 🙂
Nina says
You know whats weird is I can normally drink coffee at night and just fall asleep as I normally do. Iono what it was yesterday that kept me up!
I also love flavored coffee – esp caramel. Lately im also loving Matcha Green Tea, esp in a latte!
I have become an even more CCL when we moved here….and I also hope we get to have Napoleon inside the house soon. He is adorable and has got the awesomest coloring!!!
How is Tabs doing? 😉
Karen says
Tabs is good. Lately he’s developed a bad habit of begging when I’m in the kitchen. If I’m in there making a sandwich or tea or whatever he’ll just sit there, giving me the stink eye… I have nobody to blame but myself. 🙁 I still feel guilty about taking his outdoor freedom away, and I try to make up for it via gravy and treats. Le sigh, such is the life of the CCL!
Nina says
LOL @ stink eye … dont feel bad. Im sure he understands.
Anja has a homing device for vanilla icecream. She tears out of the room once she hears clinking bowls. I usually leave a little bit for her to lick just because she is so skinny.
On the other hand, when Fats (aka Linus) hears ANY kind of paper/plastic bag rustling, he thinks its time for the Temptations. He snorts and pouts when its not the treat bag…
Karen says
Isn’t that funny how cats have their special food triggers? Lately Tabs has been a nut for sliced turkey. Just hearing the cold cuts drawer sends him into a frenzy!!
Kypris says
Oh I’m totally missing hanging out with my girlfriends… I’ve been cooping myself up at home for the past couple of weeks, trying to complete my undergrad thesis and study for exams, all while preparing for a conference and the subsequent 6-week trip. I can’t wait to finish my last exam… of my undergraduate degree! So exciting, and yet so much to do before then…
Karen says
Kypris, you’re a busy lady!
Where will you be heading to on your trip? I need to vicariously travel through you.
Kypris says
I’m so excited! I’m going to Stockholm for the conference… then traveling to Vienna, Prague, Berlin, Hamburg, Bern, Paris, Madrid, and Cadiz. 😀
Paula says
Hey, everyone! I’m enjoying a veerrrry lazy Sunday. I hope you are getting in some good relaxing time. Things have been quite hectic for me–in between moving, trying to figure out my shite, you know the big, stressful stuff. I need to decompress a bit. On to skin/makeup talk, does anyone have opinions on Boscia or Skyn Iceland skincare lines? I was thinking of switching to something more natural/less preservatives, etc. I currently have been using Principal Secret for several years and am pretty happy with it, but you know sometimes a girl wants a change. Hyzenthlay, I’d love to here your opinions on the Physician’s Formula tinted moisturizer. I also think I’d be one of the two lighter shades. I’m not porcelain but pretty light. I also would like opinions on which Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer to try. I think there are three–regular, oil-free, and illuminating. My skin is prone to dryness (though I can get mid-day oil on the surface when it’s hot). I’m not too prone to breakouts anymore (benefits of getting older, 39). My skin can sometimes be sensitive. Any suggestions? Thanks all. I hope you have a great rest of your Sunday.
Angel says
I use the Boscia tinted moisturizer and LOVE it, but I have the philosophy one on the way from the sephora sale and I’m excited to try it. I also have used a skyn moisturizer before and liked it. It was a touch too rich for my normal skin.
Hyzenthlay says
Unfortunately, I don’t think I will form opinions on the PF TM. I took some swatches and sent them to Karen, and even the lightest one is WAY darker than my NC20 skin. I don’t think I’ll even get there with the slight tan I pick up during the summer. Bummer!
I can tell you that I am currently absolutely ADORING the Laura Mercier TM that I bought. I usually do two layers of it (gives the coverage I want) and it looks just like it’s my skin. Pop a little of Nars Multiple in Orgasm over it and my skin looks about as perfect as I want it to 🙂
Angel says
So I know this is late but just wanted to update. I got the philosophy tm in the mail a few days ago and it is so NOT a tinted moisturizer. It’s a tinted primer. It gives me like zero coverage. The color I ordered is WAY too dark for my skin tone and you can’t tell I put it on. Incredibly sheer. Although I will use it as it does give a sort of subtle soft focus effect to the face and has SPF that doesn’t break me out. But I won’t be using this for TM.
Paula Rose says
Hello fellow Paula!!! I would strongly suggest anything by Korres!! I recently converted from clinique to their line and there was no going back after I tried the wild rose mask. The moisturizer sinks in and does a heck of a job. I use the regluar LM TM. The illuminating is SUPER shimmery but a great highlighter. The oil free does not glide very well and you get a TON of coverage out of it. I would head to a Nordstrom if you can and have them color match you. They’ll also send you home with a good sized sample that should last about 7 days. 🙂
Sara says
OH EM GEE, THERE’S A MAKEUP ARTIST MAGAZINE?!?!!? i need this in my life asap!
a few more random things to add…
i got a canon powershot point-n-shoot dealie with my birthday money last week, and i LOVE it. i’ve been a picture taking machine and got some of the cutest shots EVARRR of my 2-year-old niece this weekend!
i AM considering becoming a foster mom to a cat at a local animal shelter, but that would probably turn into a permanent thing. which would be totally fine, if i didn’t have to keep him at my boyfriend’s. and if my kitty (old gregg, who is tabs’s long-lost brother as they look alike AND gregg adopted me like tabs adopted you) wasn’t such a scaredy-cat (HA!) with other animals.
new and old beauty winners of the week: illamsqua rich liquid foundation and the oil cleansing method, respectively. the foundation is niiiiiice, and the oil cleansing SAVED my misbehaving skin. yay!
i thought i was done but oh – i’m definitely picking up some rimmel mascaras at the cvs bogo this week. and hopefully i can find some pf gel liners ’cause they’re 40% off, woo hoo!
Karen says
Hi Sara,
Yup, it’s run by the same folks who do the IMATs. 🙂
I’m so glad to hear that you love your Powershot! It’s seriously one of the best cameras, ever. If you have a pic you’re particularly proud of you can always send it me if you feel like sharing.
Even though he’s a ‘fraidy cat, Old Gregg sounds like charmer. Hopefully he and the new kitty will get along!
What Rimmel mascaras are you getting? I hope Lash Flirt is up in the mix.
Sara says
thanks so much for the invitation to peruse my photos! i’ll be sure to send you the cutest of the bunch 🙂
and i’m definitely looking at lash flirt, but i’ll probably end up getting the one in the pink tube (lash maxx?) and sexy curves.
OH – while there’s still time left in the UD F&F…..oil slick lipstick, wearable or not on pigmented lips? it looks gorgeous on you!
hope you’re having a great sunday night 🙂
.-= Sara’s last blog post… Firefox is the shiz =-.
Karen says
It totally is. Mine are pretty pigmented and you can see it just fine. 🙂

I am a magazine fiend! I work in PR and besides having to read them for work I love having so many subscriptions to read through. I love In Style, Essence, Allure, Harper’s Bazaar, Real Simple and Marie Claire. I never buy Food and Wine, but I love leafing through it at the bookstore!
It was an epic makeup haul this week! I got the deal of the week $15 Smashbox cream liners, LORAC A-List/Croc traincase, MAC Mineralize in Sun and Moon, Covergirl lipstain marker, UD Sterophonic Eye kit, and UD De-slick.
Karen says
Hi PJ,
I didn’t know you worked in PR. What type of clients do you have? If you’re reading all those fun mags I bet you have a few exciting ones!
And woo hoo for your haul, especially the $15 cream liners.
PJ says
Mostly government, but some consumer brands that are more on the home/living side. It’s always busy, so makeup is my oasis!
Diana S. says
Hi! My favorite magazines are Lucky and Glamour. I used to subscribe to Rachel Ray but the recipes were all too complicated and asked for things most people wouldn’t normally have in their kitchen!
I have to share a great deal I got yesterday, Im still so excited about it! I got 4 of Benefit face powders for under $40!! Yes, I got 4 of them for that price and each is normally $28! I got Thrrrob, Coralista, Dandelion and Georgia….they were sold together on Ebay, full size, all brand new! I cant wait to get them! I already have Hoola which I love so I am happy to add these to my collection. Anyway, hope you are having a great weekend!
Karen says
What a fantastic deal! I’ve never tried Thrrrob, Dandelion or Georgia but they all look gorgeous. I hope you love Coralista as much as I do. It’s one of my Benefit faves. 🙂
Do you often buy makeup on ebay? I never have but have always been curious.
Diana says
Actually, this is the second time I buy make up on there. I got erase paste from Benefit on there too for about $10! I normally go to the Macys by my job though for make up because I hate to wait for the mail to come in and you can’t really deals on MAC stuff on Ebay, gotta get that at the store.
Monique says
Hello! I just had share that I got an OPI DS polish in extravagance! I am so happy to finally get a ds polish! Oh if only I could get my hands on some other colors, esp the blue in that line! Hope everyone had an awesome Sunday!
Karen says
Hi Monique!
That’s great. 🙂 Have you painted your nails with your new polish yet?
Carly says
Whats your favorite tinted moisturizer? I loved Benefit’s– great coverage, but it broke me out! Thanks Karen!
Angel says
Hey! I’ve never participated in the open thread but I’m taking a break from a mountain of paperwork so why not?
I’m so sad. I cleaned out my bathroom closet and literally have a sterilite tub of goodies I have to get rid of. The military is moving us to Japan and they won’t pack liquids or gels, or any of my candles….bummer. I have no idea what to do with this box.
And I’m thinking I’ll have to find some new makeup routines because the weather on Okinawa is subtropical and I’m not used to heat and humidity like that. So at least that will be fun!
Karen says
Hi Angel,
Thanks for popping by! 🙂 Glad you could make it.
One cool thing about being in Japan is that you’ll have access to so many cool brands! I’m bummed that you have to get rid of your goodies, but just think of how fun it’ll be discovering stuff to replace it with once you get there.
If it’s subtropical you’ll definitely need some good primers and blotting powders!
When are you guys leaving?
Angel says
I’m not sure about what brands I’ll have available to me, because we’ll be on a pretty small island, not the mainland. Which terrifies me…tsunamis and earthquakes, oh my!
We’re leaving in July, the dead heat of summer. I’ve been talking to people who are already there and when I tell them I’m arriving in July they just laugh, like an evil laugh, lol. I’m sure it will be a crazy fun adventure! They have pedicures where fish eat the dead skin off your feet. I’m totally trying that!!!
Luckily I’m not oily at all even in the heat so hopefully my makeup won’t be sliding around all crazy!
Karen says
I’ve heard about those fish pedicures! You are much more braver than I am… it freaks me out!
I didn’t realize how hot it got down there. And with the humidity, yikes! Are you going to be there for long?
Angel says
We’ll be there for three years. I’m so excited, but the thought of not seeing family for that long is really hard. Especially when I think about my son missing those years with his grandparents. And I’m not looking forward to that insanely long flight with a two year old!
Thanks for that MUFE cream blush review. I’m in love with it. I use it with tinted moisturizer and it’s so natural that it looks like my face actually looks that way on it’s own! I’ve never had a cream blush that I could make work for me.
Karen says
Oh, that’s going to be hard for the grandparents… thankfully we have all these electronic doo-dads to stay in touch. Maybe before you guys leave you can show ’em how to use Skype. 🙂
I’m really glad to hear you love that HD Blush. What color did you get?
Amber says
Hey Karen! I love magazines. Used to get Women’s Health, but I scaled back to just Allure and somehow I can hardly find the time to read even that anymore. I used to love to buy a ton of guilty-pleasure magazines like Glamour and Cosmo whenever I’d take the train home from college. It felt like such a luxury to spend a few hours reading magazines and watching the scenery go by!
.-= Amber’s last blog post… Good night, little girl =-.
Karen says
I love magazines too. To spend an afternoon with a big stack of ’em and a sunny couch is one of the best ways to spend a Sunday, IMHO. 🙂
Whatcha been up to this weekend?
Amber says
It’s been a mixed bag. Had to say goodbye to my sweet kitty on Friday. 🙁 Got a great new haircut Saturday and then we distracted ourselves by tackling a home project. Today we had a nice brunch, did some errands, and relaxed.

Hey Karen! i’m gonna need you to stop enabling me to buy those GORGEOUS Chanel nail polishes LOL!! omg the flesh is so weak, they are so pretty! what’s a good top coat? i swear my nail polish doesn’t last anymore than a few days. chip city!
give Tabs a pound for me 😉

Hey Gals,
For those that were interested, here are some swatches of the lighter shades of the Physician’s Formula Tinted Moisturizer courtesy of Ms. Hyzenthlay. She’s a NC 20!
From left: Physicians Formula in Ivory to Fair, Laura Mercier Porcelain, Physicians Formula Fair to Light
Nina says
Hey thanks A BU NCH for the swatches, Ms Hyzenthlay. I think I should give these a 2nd look — fair to light seems to be a possibility!
Hyzenthlay says
You’re welcome, Nina!
Sara says
omg yes, thanks so much! and srsly…that’s not ivory OR fair. wtf, PF?
.-= Sara’s last blog post… Firefox is the shiz =-.
Amber says
Thanks, Hyzenthlay! Those look awfully dark, I’m rethinking my eagerness to try any of them.

I’m trying to clean out my closet & wardrobe. I’ve been on such an anthropologie & jcrew kick I have no empty hangers. Good sign for my closet bad for my bank account.
I need a new socail circle. Having someone who gets offended/upset (idk what they are feeling) if you don’t text them for a day is a pain in the neck. Really is this middle school? I’m far too old to deal with that.
Currently listening to a replay of bbc radio 1 floor fillers. You should give it a try Karen. All dance music it’s fun. Keep Tabs fabulous! Keep on blogging!
Karen says
I love anthropologie’s style, especially the shoes.
And holla for the dance music! Sounds like something I’d love.
Have a wonderful week. 🙂
Arianne says
Hey Karen! If we were neighbors we could talk beauty and cats for hours on end! It’ll be soo fun!
I also got myself a big bottle of PMS, along with TFSI (my 2nd tube), Benefit Brow Zing, NARS Cordura duo, and a Sephora Professionel duo fibre brush. I did a lot of damage in Sephora… Yikes! But I’m happy with my purchases.
The boyfriend is looking to get a new place soon and might be getting a kitty! I can’t wait for the day when we pick out a rescue together. 🙂
.-= Arianne’s last blog post… Swatches: NARS Cordura Eyeshadow Duo. =-.
Karen says
That would be AWESOME. 🙂
I did some damage too, but think of it this way… you could have much more expensive habits, hee hee!
Oh, I’m very excited about you possibly getting a kitteh. But why stop at just one?
Arianne says
I’m actually quite allergic to cats! But it doesn’t stop me from loving them, even if it means sneezing my tonsils out after.
Once we’ve moved in to a much bigger place, I definitely want two kittehs. That way the old one can haz playmate. 😀
Karen says
NICE. I’ve been trying to brace El Hub for the day when he comes home to find Tabs has a new brother or sister, heh! I don’t know when it’ll happen, but I figure it’s only a matter of time.
What allergy meds do you take? Zyrtec is the bomb.com!
Arianne says
LOL you should put a bow on the brand new cat and present her/him as a gift to El Hub. Is Tabs friendly towards other kitties? Mingming hates other animals so no more kitties at my parent’s house.
Yes I take Zyrtec (we call it Reactine here). Everything else either makes me drowsy or doesn’t work on me.
BTW I just got the Canon G11. I read before that you owned one and I’m kinda having a love affair with mine! 😀
Karen says
I think Tabs has alpha tendencies. In our old neighborhood, he was ALWAYS thugging when other cats came around.
I’ve read that it’s possible to introduce another kitty to a household w/a cat like Tabs, but it takes a lot of steps and finesse. That’s the big reason I haven’t tried to bring another cat home yet.
Glad you like the G11. It’s a nice piece of equipment… I just wish it was faster!
mkdallas says
Good evening, ladies! I’m sad to have only seen one pic of Tabs this weekend. My kittehs love the laundry basket too, but will sit in almost any confined space (even a shoebox, with their ample booties spilling over the sides) with great pleasure. I wanted to share a fun idea for a happy hour I’ll be hosting in a couple of weeks. I have a group of girl friends and we like to get together about every 6 weeks at someone’s house for happy hour on a Friday afternoon. Normally, it’s just a little food, alot of wine and shooting the breeze for a few hours. I really need to clean out my makeup drawers, as I have literally about 100 pieces of makeup I’m not using. It’s all too nice or new to toss out. Some of it I purchased and was too lazy to return, other items were from a GWP, but I’ve decided to throw it all out there during the happy hour….kinda like an adult pinata, lol. Seems like a fun way to clean out the bathroom drawers and see good stuff getting recycled!
Karen says
Hi MKDallas,
He’s being moody about being photographed… you know how top cat models are sometimes. They need the right lightening, stylist, etc. etc. I’ll be sure to pop in a few extra pics of him this week to make up for it. 😉
Oh, great idea to spread the makeup joy during the party! I bet your friends will be THRILLED!
makeup morsels says
heyy karen and everyone! hope you’re all having a good weekend. I’ve finished all my studying for the day, and I dropped by sephora to take advantage of the 15% off thing (got some timebalm. finally accepted the fact that my dark circles are here to stay) and I’m going to spend the rest of today watching lord of the rings. probably my favorite movies ever. I think my memories starting to go lol. Today I was wiping my lips off with a tissue and was like wtf why are they green?! Then I finally remembered I had just finished a green tea latte *facepalm*
.-= makeup morsels’s last blog post… EOTD: (Wearable) Starburst (Inspired) =-.

Aloha Karen,
When it come to magazines, I’m a People (for the gossip), InStyle and Allure (for the beauty and fashion) and Hawaii and Maui (for the scenery) gal. That MakeUpArtist magazine is totally on my radar now….how often does it come out?
This morning was spent getting caught-up on all of your MBB TV videos…girl, you CRACK ME UP!! I then took a nap before we went to my parents….birthday dinner for my eldest nephew (who turns FIFTEEN tomorrow—-who said that these youngins’ are allowed to GROW UP! I was at the hospital when he was born—GOD, I FEEL OLD!!) Everyone else ate, I read some of my Nicholas Sparks THE LAST SONG.
I’m on a quest for the Nouvelle Vague polish from Chanel…….if I can’t find it, could you recommend another great TURQUOISE nail polish for summer?
Mahalo!!
Alicia says
From pics I’ve seen, For Audrey by China Glaze is a good dupe for Nouvelle Vague. It’s a tiny bit darker and doesn’t have shimmer, but they look really similar. I own For Audrey and love it!

Hi,
I have been following your blog for awhile now and I really enjoy it!! You do such a great job!!! So I have been on the hunt for a great tinted moisturizer or light foundation. I have tried Laura Mercier and it didn’t agree with my skin. I have tried BE but again it seems to be making me itchy!! I need some help, anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!! 🙂

Hey Elaine 🙂
lol yeh its good 4 a laugh when u end up with a clown face! When the face turns out good i usually take pics so i remember how 2 do it when im going out…few days ago i did a really nice smokey eye with only mac knight divine and vex, and i think it turned out really cool considering it was only 2 colours and only took 10mins! hehe!

Hey again Karen & fellow beauty addicts 🙂
I was just reading some comments about tabs hehe and i realized this would be the perfect place 2 ask everyone 4 some ideas 4 kitty names!!!
We have 2 cats of our own, and have recently adopted a couple of stray kittens that keep popping under the fence in2 our yard, and now theyre in the kitchen every morning and afternoon waiting 4 some tuna lol!
Anyways ive been trying 2 think of names, but im really not that great with them, one of our cats is just called Kitty lol and the other one is texas…these 2 new kittens r both jet black with ginger stripes through them, one really faint and the other quite strong stripes…ive never seen a mixture like it, theyre stunning actually 🙂
I would like 2 officially adopt them and of course 2 do this i need names!
🙂

I must admit Karen, although I’ve been blogging for years, your blog is truly my all time favorite. So just curious about a few things, 1) what camera do you use again? you answered that before but I forgot to write it down. Your pics always look AMAZING! 2) What’s your dream place to visit? Mine is Egypt. Something about those pyramids. Now, my current fave mascara is not a drugstore brand (although I do own many drugstore products) but it’s Givenchy’s newest waterproof phenom eyes. It’s amazing!!!

Hi everyone!
having a so-so day today, off to hospital tomorrow to try and persuade my Dr that I need a op on my back as the spine injections just don’t work :-$
Anyhoo I can’t wait to get paid so I can treat myself to some thing to cheer my ass up.
Has anyone tried Laura Geller? specifically Spackle? Last month I bought L’occitane soaps and this month I am itching for some make up.
My boyfriend got me a subscription to Cosmo for Christmas and I love it!
Have a good week everyone

Oooh this thread is exactly what I needed! Since yesterday my flatmate and best friend is in London for work and I have real separation anxiety!
So beauty-wise, I decided the best way to forget THAT boy was a real moron by getting my most expensive lipstick so far, which is also my first red lipstick…..tadaa Chanel’s Gabrielle #19! It’s beautiful beautiful beautiful and it’s the first time I wear red lipstick and feel like I own the world. Now I need to practise my liplining skills.
Anyway wishing you all a fantastic week – and Karen, thank you so much for your blog. Not only is it everything I wanted to know about makeup, it also cheers me up like nothing else when I’ve had a bad week/month!
