Tabs and I just got back from our walk and WOW! — it’s hotter than hades out there. Not that I’m complaining. I’m glad it gets hot here. Mill Valley, the town we lived in before, was closer to San Francisco and the chilly marine layer. Summers only lasted about two seconds in the middle of September, so “YEA!” for being able to wear shorts and sundresses in June!
I don’t have much lined up for the rest of the afternoon, other than making that homemade ice cream I mentioned (the strawberries are macerating as we speak!) and giving myself an at-home pedi while we chat in the open thread. The Essie Pretty Edgy I’ve been wearing for two weeks is on its last legs.
In case you’re a new reader, here’s the scoop on the open thread: it’s basically unstructured time to chat about anything we like in the comments at the bottom of this post — food, clothes, books, movies, pets, relationships, whateva! Please feel free to pop in and out as much and as often as you like.
A few questions to start the party…
Do you like to do your own nails, or do you prefer to have them done at a salon?
I do like to treat myself to a professional mani/pedi every once in a while because it feels great and looks good, but I generally prefer to do my own. I’m really picky. Plus, my mom got a terrible infection once at a nail salon a few years back, and it traumatized me.
Can you parallel park?
Yes, ma’am! I got pretty good at it back when I lived in San Francisco, and at my prime I could do it on fairly steep hills (both facing up AND down the street). But I’m rusty now. Living out here in the burbs dulled my edge, LOL!
What’s your favorite thing about summer?
Besides the sun? I love the extra hours of daylight. Great for picture taking and walking cats.
See you in a few! 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Terri says
Hi everyone,
The summer heat and humidity is giving me a daily beauty meltdown. Does anyone have any suggestions (tips and/or products) to help me keep my makeup in place during these hot summer days?
Sarah says
Hey Terri,
I just started using a makeup primer (Smashbox Photofinish Primer, to be exact) and I’ve noticed a difference. The primer acts like a magnet for makeup and totally keeps it in place. Hope this helps! Happy Sunday everyone!
Terri says
Thanks for the advice Sarah! I’ve never tried Smashbox primer, but I might have to give it a shot.
Karen says
Hi Terri,
In general I try to go lighter when it heats up so I don’t have to worry about makeup melting off when I start to sweat. If I’m just running around doing errands, I’ll fill in my brows, throw on some tinted moisturizer, cover up the dark circles with Time Balm concealer, put on some waterproof mascara and then finish off with some gloss.
Oh, and if I remember to I’ll throw on some primer beneath everything! That seems to help lock stuff in place.
Would love to hear about everybody else’s tips/tricks.
Terri says
Thanks for the advice Karen! That sounds like it is perfect for the summer (particularly when I have to be ready to teach at 7:00 am).
Karen says
Sure! What are you teaching this summer? Anything interesting/fun?
Terri says
I am teaching a foundations of education course to incoming graduate students. It is actually kind of fun because the students are usually pretty excited about getting into the classroom. Also, even though the class is 5 days a week for 6 weeks, the days are pretty short (I’m typically done by noon), so that means I can go to my other job and do my own work.
Karen says
That sounds like a great schedule. It must be a pleasure to teach students who are enthusiastic about the subject, I bet!
Agnes says
hii 🙂
i like to keep my makeup light during the summer days. its decreases the chance (and amount) of having my makeup melting all over my face. 😛 I usually stick to a tinted moisturizer, concealer, maybe a swipe of eyeshadow/mascara and a blush to give me that light flush. Lately, i’ve been lovingg my new nyx cream blushes to give me that flush on my cheeks! but i have yet to test them out against the hot summer days 😀
Ohh i also like to keep a mist/spray on me during summer. It helps refresh your makeup, hydrates your skin and feels sooo good when you spray it on 😀 and yes.. primers help a TON in keeping your makeup on! good luck!
.-= Agnes’s last blog post… Achieve the Perfect Inner Glow w- NYX Cream Blushes- =-.
Terri says
Agnes, do you just use water to mist on your face or do you use toner or another product?
Agnes says
I use the body shop’s vitamin e spray. it has rosewater and vitamin e and i really like it! Sometimes if im not in the mood for rosewater, i use my evian mineral water spray 🙂 hope that helps!
.-= Agnes’s last blog post… Achieve the Perfect Inner Glow w- NYX Cream Blushes- =-.
Karen says
Ditto on the spray mist. MAC makes one called Fix+ that’s pretty good. I like to keep in the fridge to keep it cold — feels SO good to spritz it on!
Sonja says
Yey for another open thread!!
1. I used to go on manicures but I change my nail polish too often+ I just can’t sit still for 40 min and be pampered. Though I hate hate hate doing pedicures, and my toes are always, be summer or winter painted red (for the last couple months my fav red is Chanel Dragon)
2. Oh man. I’ve had a drivers license for 5 years and I still refuse to drive and take a bus. It’s not that I’m afraid it’s just…I can’t be bothered. I did try to get ‘back on track’ so to speak, a couple months ago…got truck toad back home. Me+cars=disaster.
3. Going to my island house and doing n-o-t-h-i-n-g. And this is the last summer I’ll have that freedom since I finished university and have to wait till September to apply for an internship. It’s so lovely-wake up at 10, go for a swim, have fish for lunch that was caught that morning, potatoes from your garden, with your grandmas olive oil, and wine made on the island opposite to yours. Lots of family around, later a long siesta, coffee and then swim again, walking around and do nothing but watch the starry sky and peaceful sky and yachts around. Sure, after a week I feel like Robinson Crusoe and want to swim back to the land but still…I dream of it every winter!
Oh and on the make up level- this new Chanel collection will be the death of me, thank the lord it won’t be in our stores for at least 1 month (probably 2). And those 2 Benefits…wow, just wow.
Sarah says
Hey Sonja,
I know where you’re coming from regarding driving. I actually failed my drivers test and just never went back to get it because I never liked driving anways. So for now I’m pretty content taking the bus but should I ever live somewhere without a bus system I’m going to have to bite the bullet and learn to drive again. And ditto on the Benefit pallettes!
Karen says
Your island house sounds amazing. I wanna hang out with you there, LOL!
I don’t think I’ve ever had homemade olive oil… the thought of it makes my stomach rumble.
So anyway, regarding the car… I think maybe you should just start driving around your neighborhood at first again. Then, as you get more comfortable behind the wheel, use the car to run small errands, like going to the grocery store. Soon you’ll be a driving pro!
What do you think you might get from Chanel fall?
Sonja says
Oh we usually only eat homemade olive oil (kind of easy when every where you walk you run into an olive tree, I have one in my garden that’s suppose to be a 1000y. old!).
Well that’s exactly why I never got into driving in the first place- I live 15 minutes from the centre and when I’m there it’s easier to walk around- and with all the parking, rush hours and the fact that during the driving you can really sense that Croatian people are indeed Balkans…I really never felt that I needed to. So I just spared myself the trouble-although I know that the time will come when I’ll somehow be forced by circumstances to start driving again…
Oh beloved Chanel- I’ll for sure be buying that nail polish (apparently a mix of Vendetta&Particuliare, hellooo!) and Cassis eye pencil…not sure about Vert Khaki eyeshadow, since I love green but always just go for eyeliner/kohl look.
Karen says
Wow, amazing! I bet the fresh, homemade kind is delicious… oh my, I’m hungry, LOL!
So, I totally get what you mean regarding driving in the center of the city. It’s totally the same way in San Francisco. You’re better off taking a bus or just parking your car in one place and then walking to get all your errands done. It might be still good to keep practicing around your ‘hood though… you never know if you’ll have to drive for an emergency! Plus, it’s very empowering to know that you can always take yoruself from point a to point b if you need to.
Vert Khaki’s cool, but you probably don’t need it if you have similar shades. The Cassis liner, though, is a MUST!
Haley says
Hey Karen!
Funny you asked about the at-home pedi/mani, I actually just bought a new base coat and polish. I purchased Essie’s base coat, and then bought their polish in Flirt; really similar to Cajun Shrimp by OPI, which is on its last legs for me 🙁 So far so good with the base coat! And I almost always do my own nails and toes–saves me money and I don’t feel guilty if I want to change the colour!
Yes, I CAN parallel park.. I just choose not to… LOL
Favourite thing about summer? Being able to relax, soak up the sun, and catch up on my reading. Speaking of, I know you’re a fan of the show True Blood Karen, have you read any of the Sookie Stackhouse books? Just finished the first one in the series today.. SO good! I definitely recommend.
Any big plans for the rest of the week? I know your Fourth of July is coming up!
Karen says
Hi Haley,
Oh, did you get the Essie First Base coat? I love that one!
As for the Sookie books, I made it through about four, then I got a little tired of them. The great thing about the show is how they change the books SO MUCH so you never know what’s going to happen. Are you excited about tonight’s ep?
Plans for the rest of the week, hmm… I really just want to be careful with time management. I tend to dilly-dally and take FOREVER and a day to do tasks, so I’m going to try (!) to put myself on a strict deadline. No plans for the fourth yet… how about you?
Haley says
Yep, it works really nicely!
Oh really? I’m enjoying it so far.. I hope they don’t let me down.. the show sure hasn’t.. and hell yes! I’m totally loving this thing between Sookie and Eric.. he is soo attractive. They need to hook up.. and Sookie should just leave Bill in the dust, haha.
Well I’m in Canada, so we have Canada day on July 1st! So on Thursday I’ll probably go out with friends to celebrate. Good luck with the time management, I need to work on that too… oh, and procrastination. Thats a big one 🙂
Karen says
Yeah, I’m pretty bad when it comes to procrastination. Not as bad as my college years, but I could still use some help, LOL!
As for True Blood, I can’t wait for the werewolves to show up, WOO HOO!
Haley says
Did you watch it?!! This new werewolf is VERY good looking, lol. And what is up with that creepy vampire? Ugh I want to see the next episode!
Karen says
I’m waiting for it to come on… I’m on the west coast so we get everything last, ARGGH!!
Terri says
Do you like to do your own nails, or do you prefer to have them done at a salon?
I lack the coordination to do a good job on my nails by myself, but I usually paint them at home because I’m a poor graduate student and don’t have the funds/time to go to the salon on a regular basis.
Can you parallel park?
No; I remember learning to parallel park for my driving test, but I don’t think I’ve actually done it since then.
What’s your favorite thing about summer?
I live in Boston, and I think that the population shrinks by half when summer comes around :). I also love being able to visit my famiy
Karen says
Does it get terribly hot in Boston?
Terri says
The heat comes and goes. Tomorrow it is supposed to be in the 90s, but then the highs will be in the 70s later this week. What makes summer in Boston a little tricky is that 1) I don’t have a car, so I do a lot of walking/waiting for the train, which isn’t much fun in hot weather, and 2) air conditioning isn’t always the rule here 🙁
Karen says
Oh, hot train = NO FUN!
Maybe you need to get yourself one of those personal, battery-powered fans. They’re so cheesy, but I bet they’d come in handy on public transpo!
Tiffany says
OMG it’s been in the upper 90s here and I am dying! I can parallel park but I avoid it whenever possible, lol. I prefer to do my own toes because it’s free! I love summer for the outdoor festivals and concerts and fun!
What did everyone do this weekend?
Karen says
I honestly don’t know how you can handle the humidity + the heat. I’d seriously go nuts!!
I really didn’t do much this weekend… I’m still recovering from my cold so I spent a lot of time just chilling and watching bad TV. I am now all caught up with The City, although I have no idea why I keep watching that show. It just makes me cranky. Right now I’m waiting for my strawberry ice cream to ice cream-ify itself!
Terri says
Oh, Tiffany, I hope it cools down for you soon! Where do you live? I was visiting my family in Tennessee last week, and it was in the 90s there everyday.
I’ve spent the weekend running errands and frantically knitting a baby blanket for a friend of mine. I am hoping to give it to her at the baby’s christening on Saturday, but my lack of knitting prowess might keep me from my goal.
Tiffany says
I live in Atlanta. I went to savannah this weekend and it was even more humid there!
I bet the blanket will be so cute when you’re done! I wish I could knit.
Karen I’m with you on the city. WTF is up with Olivia?!
Terri says
The southeast in the summer is completely brutal! However, at least it has sweet tea and air conditioning (two things that can be hard to find in Boston).
Thanks for your vote of confidence on the blanket. I’m working on it right now 🙂
Karen says
Good luck with the blanket! Take a pic when you’re done and send it to me! I wanna see!
Karen says
OMG, talk about wasting a HUGE opportunity. It’s clear that Joe keeps her on just to keep the magazine on the show. Any other person would’ve gotten the boot a long time ago.
Shah'ada says
I love getting my nails done.
And I need major hair help!!!
Got my hair cellophaned w/ red brunette w/ the intention of of having my hair reflect red in the sun, but instead I now have maroon hair. On top of that, I got a perm that the hair lady combed through to loosen my curls. I now have burned/fried/dry hair that is way too straight and red. I am so freaking depressed!! What to do? I have bawled my eyes out already today. On top of all that, I am seeing ma familia for the first time in 7 years next Friday. Sigh. Stress.
Karen says
Oh my gosh Shah’ada. This sounds awful! I’m so sorry this happened to you. Did you call the manager of the salon to let them know about what happened? If they had any integrity they’d fix it!
Haley says
If you’re brave enough, go back and complain! Unless they’re complete pricks they should fix it for free.
Sandy says
I love doing my own mani/pedis. Strangely, its very relaxing for me since I do it while watching tv or a good movie. Don’t get me wrong I love being pampered at the Salon every now and then yet it can add up. Plus I like tend to change my nail polish color quite often…I am currently sporting OPIs “ogre the top blue” on my nails and “feeling hot hot hot” on my toes.
I can most definitely parallel park thanks to my dad. I would not be allowed to drive if I did not pass his test (much harder than any DMV one). I am now Forever thankful for that!
My favorite part about summer is the being able to wear cute dresses and enjoying time with family and friends.
Karen says
My dad tried to teach me to drive… yeah, that didn’t go too well, LOL! I ended up going to a driving school!
Agnes says
1. I prefer to do my own nails because i feel more comfortable doing them myself at home 🙂 plus, i actually do like to paint and decorate my own nails so its a fun way if you have a couple hours to spare! 😀
2. i actually liked parallel parking…. 😀 but havent done it since i got my license!!… other than parking lots, im usually lucky in finding spots where i can just pull up along the curb etc. 🙂
3. oh summer. I WISH IT WAS HERE FOR ME! unfortuantely, i have just a few more days until my exams are over so i guess i just have to sit tight and cram for just abit more. But i love summer 🙂 for me, its all about vacations, family reunions, long summer nights with friends, summer dresses and beautiful weather perfect for walking and hanging around outside.
.-= Agnes’s last blog post… Achieve the Perfect Inner Glow w- NYX Cream Blushes- =-.
Terri says
Good luck with your exams! I start teaching summer classes tomorrow, so I feel your pain.
Agnes says
thank youu 🙂 good luck with your teaching! what grade do you teach?
.-= Agnes’s last blog post… Achieve the Perfect Inner Glow w- NYX Cream Blushes- =-.
Terri says
I used to teach high school English, but now I’m a graduate student/ assistant professor.
Karen says
Good luck with your tests, Agnes! How many more do you have left?
Agnes says
thanks!! i have two 🙁 one on tuesday and one wednesday.. cant wait to be done! 😀
.-= Agnes’s last blog post… Achieve the Perfect Inner Glow w- NYX Cream Blushes- =-.
Karen says
Are you ready for them? What subjects are they in?
Terri says
Has anyone tried tubular mascara? If so, do you have any suggestions? I’m currently using the L’Oreal version, but I’m not terribly impressed. I want to try Blinc, but I’m hesitant to spend $24 on a mascara that might not be worth it…
Karen says
I’ve tried a few — my favorite is Clinique’s Lash Power:
https://www.makeupandbeautyblog.com/product-reviews/paint-it-pink-paint-it-black-going-black-to-the-gym/
http://www.clinique.com/product/CATEGORY4904/PROD12638/Makeup/Mascara/index.tmpl
Terri says
I had no idea that Clinique did a tubular mascara. I have a Macy’s gift card burning a hole in my wallet, so I think I’m going to run and get some tomorrow. Thanks for the heads-up!
Karen says
Sure! I hope you like it, but save your receipt just in case! 🙂
Brandy says
Hey ladies! In a little over two weeks I’m off for a month long volunteer trip to South Africa. I don’t want to take a lot with me, but there will be a few instances were I want to dress up a bit. I was thinking of taking a tinted moisturizer, a powder, concealer, mascara and one travel friendly palette with some pretty basics. Any ideas on products that are portable and stand up to heat and humidity? (It’s winter there, but still pretty warm.) I’m looking for a palette with blush and eyeshadow that will give me a few options. 🙂
Terri says
Brandy, that sounds very exciting! You might want to take a powder that has SPF in it. I am currently using BareMinerals Natural Sunscreen, which gives me light coverage and sun protection. I think that Benefit’s Hello Flawless also has SPF in it.
Good luck with your volunteer work.
Karen says
Hi Brandy,
Good for you! What kind of volunteer work will you be doing?
I’m not sure what your budget is, but if you don’t mind dropping some $$ Nars makes some really spiffy palettes for eyes/lips/cheeks:
http://www.narscosmetics.com/Artist-Palette-C19_category_4.aspx
Brandy says
I’ll be wearing my sunscreen, as always, but the powder is a good idea! A Nars palette may be just what I’m after, thanks! 🙂
Brandy says
Sorry, I didn’t mean to ignore the question! I’ll be working with a school as a teacher. I’m pretty excited, especially as it gets closer!
Karen says
Oh, no worries. 🙂 It sounds like it’s going to be very satisfying work. You’ll be making a huge impact on a few lives… big ups to you!!
Karen says
You’re welcome! 🙂
Laura says
Salons scare me. I watched too much 20/20 when I was younger lol
Can’t drive! =/
Summer is great just because of the weather..hate the cold
Gahh..adopted a new kitten! So far Stink the resident one year old cat has not taken to her.
I’ll be stuck here for a while watching those two making sure no one gets hurt..=/
Wish the bf hadn’t introduced them so early siigh..
Karen says
Congrats and oh no regarding the new cat politics! It sounds like Stink is very territorial. Hopefully the two will be getting along soon.
What’s the new kitteh like?
Laura says
Her name is Guppy she’s 3 months. Mostly gray with white one her feet and chest. She really loves to play and was REALLY excited when she saw Stink lol She keeps trying to play with him but he’s NOT having it. Ya, he’s pretty territorial especially when it comes to his beloved cat condo lol Luckily they’re both sleeping so finally so time to just veg!
Karen says
Guppy sounds adorable. I am having MAJOR kitten fever at the moment. I keep telling myself “Tabs” needs a kitten, but really, it’s me, LOL! I have a feeling he would NOT be into it.
Where did you get her from?
Laura says
lol that’s what my bf kept saying too and I was really skeptical because I know how much of a grouch Stink can be, but she’s really sweet. Hopefully they become friends sometimes it seems like he wants a cat friend since he stares at the neighbor’s cat so much! I got her from the Orange County shelter. Its hard to say no when you see all those sweet faces just wanting to come out of those kennels.
Karen says
I think with time they’ll learn to love each other. And, at least this way Stink gets some stimulus, right?
Yeah, if we end up getting a kitty it’ll definitely be a shelter or a rescue cat, too. 🙂
Are both Stink and Guppy going to be indoor cats?
Laura says
YA! Hopefully 🙂
The shelter kitties were so sweet ESPECIALLY the older ones. I really wanted one of the older ones but my bf said no because Stink really wouldn’t accept an older/bigger kitty. Tear..
Ya they’ll both be indoors. Though I will try to get Guppy to walk on a leash/harness hopefully. Stink is too afraid of strangers I tried. But I think I’ll get him one of those Kittywalk Systems..those enclosed outdoor spaces because he is interested in being outside long as there’s no humans lol or maybe even a stroller for walks if he permits. Lol I’m such a crazy cat lady!
Sara says
i can’t seem to post under you but HAHA laura, me too!!! (re: being a crazy cat lady) you are so sweet to your babies!
Laura says
Thanks Sara!
Glad I’m not the only crazy cat lady lol!
Karen says
Ladies, you aren’t full on CCL unless you’re wearing this jacket:
http://bit.ly/crpDhI
As for the Kitty Walk System, I’m thinking this one for Tabs:
http://www.kittywalksystems.com/deck_patio.asp
Laura says
lol I’ll get on that jacket
Think Stink will get this one
http://www.kittywalksystems.com/penthouse.asp
The others are too low to see over the balcony. Hopefully the squirrels won’t try to start fights lol I’ve had a few of those do that
Karen says
Ooh, that one’s fancy! Tabs would probably like that too… but I think he may lack the agility to get to the top tier. He isn’t the most graceful cat, LOL!
Nina says
Its a treat for me to have my toenails done — I dont really like doing them myself and I consider the hour or so spent in the nail salon as “me” time.
Parallel parking – my waterloo! Learned it the hard way but hardly ever get to use it because well … we do have lots of parking spaces in HTown (except when youre downtown) ….
I love love love the sunshine. I think I kinda wilt a little in the winter without my precious sun! 🙂
Hello Karen and ladies … I hope everyone had a great weekend … 🙂
Karen says
WOW, a city with parking! Seriously, I find the concept mind-boggling. In SF it’s like a fight to the death to find a spot!
Nina says
Uh huh, whenever I would visit my friend in LA I would be shocked that we had to pay for parking in the mall!!! Or anywhere else we went to, really. Weirdness (at least to me)…
Here the only place where parking is a chore would be the downtown district and maybe the midtown area during weekend nights…. 🙂
Karen says
Oh yah… paying for parking is a way of life here. I even have certain parking garages that are my favorites, LOL!
Aparnaa says
I have parallel parked twice in my entire life. The first time, at my test, I had the mean instructor. I did not use the accelerator pedal AT ALL. The mean instructor kept telling me I could accelerate but I did not! Miraculously, I passed.
The second time was a disaster that we won’t speak about. I didn’t hit anything, but I ended up switching with my little sister. And she parked it efficiently.
Also, I just had pie. I really love pie.
Karen says
Ooh, what kind of pie did you have? Did you make it?
Aparnaa says
Key lime – my sister made it! (I hand-whipped the whipped cream, so I feel I helped some. Though basically I sat there cursing the soccer game while I mindlessly used a whisk…)
Sara says
i’ve only had one pedicure in my lifetime, but it was a wonderful experience. in fact, it was about 2 1/2 weeks ago and the polish is still going strong. i gotta find out their secret. BUT, i got my nails done at walmart last weekend and i do NOT recommend it. chipped off after 2 days and the BUBBLES! ARGHGH!
oh and my bf and i broke up today. it’s bittersweet. we’re going in different directions and i need some time for me, ya know?
Karen says
Hi Sara,
I’m sorry to hear that you and your BF broke up, but it sounds like you both were ready to move on. I hope that you’ll heal soon. Big hugs to you!
Sara says
thanks karen 🙂 my big sister is like, my life guru and has been awesome today. if we didn’t live on opposite coasts i imagine you and her/me having regular spiritual/mental health/healing sessions!
i think i’d feel a LOT better if you could just overnight me some of that homemade strawberry ice cream!! just kidding, one of my dad’s best friends owns a strawberry farm and makes ice cream too; i might have to head over there tomorrow for a scoop or two!
Sara says
oh ps just finished the hunger games and catching fire…..A-MAZ-ING. i absolutely cannot wait two months for the finale.
Karen says
So glad you like the books! I hope the movie does the series justice.
Karen says
Totally. 🙂 I’d be down to bring the snack-age… homemade ice cream, some cupcakes from Kara’s and maybe some pizza if we get in the mood for something salty to offset all the sweet.
Karen says
Hey y’all,
I just wanted to let you know that it appears the homemade strawberry ice cream was a success!
Terri says
Congratulations! That sounds very yummy.
Natalie says
strawberry ice cream from ghirardelli is my favorite with their frozen strawberry chunks and also ben and jerrys strawberry cheesecake in the tiny fist sized jar!
Karen says
I’ve never had their strawberry ice cream before… but everything they make is heavenly, so I bet it’s delish!
Karen says
I’m a little alarmed with how good it tastes (if I do say so myself). It’s not going to be the best thing for my muffintop, LOL!
Tiffany says
Wow the last couple minutes of true blood were MESSED UP! That is all
Haley says
Um.. Totally! Wtf was going on with Bill there? Can’t wait for the next episode, though.
Karen says
Okay, I’m still waiting for it to come on… do I need to mentally prepare myself?
Sabrina says
Hi Karen, funny you should ask this! I just got my first cuticle trimmer + files at CVS in the attempt to do a DIY manicure. I definitely prefer to have my nails done at the salon – mainly because I’m horrible at doing my own mani/pedis. Especially my right hand.
What’s your favorite thing about summer? Warm weather, although I live by the beach and it’s been cloudy the past week. What’s up with that?
Can I parallel park? Depends. Most of the time no, not unless it’s a REALLY big gap and if my husband is in the car with me, then definitely no. He makes me so nervous.
.-= Sabrina’s last blog post… Chanel Paradoxal 509 Le Vernis Nail Colour =-.
Karen says
You’ll soon be a mani/pedi pro with a little practice! 🙂
Amber says
Hi Karen! I can’t believe the weekend is OVER. It always goes by faster when my husband has to work.
1) I do my own nails because I can’t stand to pay for something so simple and temporary. 🙂
2) I parallel park well because I used to live in Philadelphia!
3) My favorite thing about summer is wearing dresses all the time! I am obsessed with dresses.
We don’t have very long summer days here in Houston, but it is a fair trade-off for still having relatively long days in the fall and winter when the temperature is bearable.
.-= Amber’s last blog post… Diamond Head- four ways =-.
Karen says
No kidding. This one flew by so fast!
What time does sun set in H-town? Here it’s light until about 9…
Michelle says
I have been doing my own pedicures — but I really like having them professionally done. I need to treat myself.
I cannot parallel park at all — very sad!!
My favorite thing about summer is wearing flip flops, laying out, and having BBQ’s with friends!!
YAY for summer 🙂
Karen says
Yay for summer indeed! 🙂
Have a great week!
amy says
I like doing my own nails most of the time, but once in a while it is nice to get it done professionally and just kick back and relax. I cannot parallel park for the life of me. The best part of summer is painting my toe nails and showing them off. Also I love the scent of jasmine at night from my neighbours’ garden. After reading one of your previous postings, I checked out The Hunger Games and I have enjoyed reading it. I can’t put it down and anticipate reading the next books.
.-= amy’s last blog post… Great for Light Makeup- NARS Skin Softening Milk Cleanser =-.
Karen says
Hi Amy,
So glad to hear that you like the The Hunger Games. Did you read through both the first and second books?
amy says
I am almost finished the first book and will be starting the second one in a few days. The third one comes out in August and I can’t wait to read that one too.
.-= amy’s last blog post… Great for Light Makeup- NARS Skin Softening Milk Cleanser =-.
Jeni says
I always do my own nails – I am super cheap and don’t like spending money on stuff I can do myself (but I am lazy so I usually just do sheer colors).
I lived in San Francisco for 8 years so YES I can parallel park! But I haven’t had to do it in so long that I’ve probably forgotten how to do it. I still have nightmares about trying to park on this one super steep hill downtown near Nob Hill – scary!
I love summer because I can wear flip flops and go to the pool. And here in Vegas it’s 85 degrees at night, so I can wear shorts 24/7.
.-= Jeni’s last blog post… Discontinued Makeup And Beauty Products =-.
Karen says
How are you liking Vegas, Jeni? It’s so different from SF (no hills!).
I’m way jealous that it’s 85 degrees at night… that’s one thing I miss about living in a warm town.

I do! Or rather, he walks me. 🙂 I bought him a harness a while back. It took him a few weeks to get used to it, but now he loves wearing it. I think he looks forward to our time outside together.

Isn’t it ironic that I live in a place that’s warm all the time, and I crave the cold?! Like, gimme snow! Definitely the grass is greener elsewhere.
Hey Karen, how long did you live in Hawaii? I lived there for 3 years when I was a kid, loved it! But it’s just so much like tropical Asia where I live, that we don’t make the effort to go back for a visit. But whenever I see your Hawaii posts, I dream of going back….
Karen says
Hi Lena,
I’ve never lived there, although I visit a lot because I have family there. El Hub grew up on Oahu, and that’s where his parents live now. Where did you live?
Rae says
KAREN! This is completely off-topic, but I *need* to know — not having an answer is driving me nuts!! Where are you getting this NW20 skin from?! *froths at mouth*
My favourite part of summer’s (partially) the same as yours 😉 Longer days means more time for photo-taking!

Would you believe me if I told you I just keep a bunch of extra arms around to swatch?
Rae says
Hmmm… almost 😛 Now, that’s dedication!

Coincidentally, I saw this post just after I painted my fingernails with Chanel’s Orange Blossom. And I am here to report a day later that that sh*t is SO worn down already! I took a shower, like, an hour after I painted my nails and it started to peel. Is it just me or are their nail polishes super underperforming? Sorry, just needed to vent that!
….. The color is lovely, though. 😉

I prefer to do my own. I’m into nail art so I can do a way better job for freeee

I absolutely love doing my own nails! I haven’t gone to a salon in ages, really! I find it relaxing, I can change colours as many time as I wish without wasting any money AND since I’m a perfectionist, I can have it my way! My nails are done so well that everybody thinks they’re fake!!!
I can parallel park, but this is no big deal in Italy, everybody can, more or less. Also, here 99.9% people drive a stick shift, it’s the norm! 😀
Fav thing about summer –> definitely the longer days (I need sunlight in order to feel good!) and the sea!!! the beach, the sea, the tan… AAHHHHH!
