Happy Fourth of July, friend. 🙂
I know it’s been a hot minute. I haven’t really been feeling myself this week. You know how it is… Just one of those times, I guess. Today is a holiday, though, and there’s a big parade here in Novato, so I’m pulling myself together best I can and heading downtown. It starts in a few.
Here’s my Fourth of July outfit, camera included, so I can take some pics.
That’s my big girl camera, the Canon 70d, with the 18-135mm STM lens (a very good walk-around lens, BTW).
The necklace and earrings are on sale right now at katespade.com, if you’re so inclined. Links down in the photo captions below.
I hope you’re doing something fun today, no matter where you are. Anyone having a big family Fourth of July barbecue? If so, have some corn of the cob for me.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Karen says
Happy Fourth to you, too, Divya!
Jane says
Love the earrings!
Karen says
Thanks, Jane. Have a good one.
Chelsea says
Love the turtle earrings! And the kitty shoes!
I’m wearing a yellow Jessica Simpson sundress, some tan leather Lucky Brand sandals with a short, chunky heel, and my Michael Kors gold watch. Also, massive amounts of sunscreen! I might add my panama hat and some gold aviators at some point.
Karen says
Hi Chelsea,
Thank you! I’m glad that they actually look like turtles. I was a little unsure there for a second, LOL! What are you up to today?
Chelsea says
We went to our friends’ house for grilling, games, and a bonfire! Lots of fun!
Agatha says
Karen! You are a woman after my own heart: I have the SAME Van Cat shoes! I guess you can tell our love and loyalty lies with cats!! From one cat lover to another: have a purrfect 4th!
Karen says
Hi Agatha,
I like your cat lady style. 🙂 How many cats do you “assist”? (LOL)
Agatha says
I have five beautiful furry feline children (in addition to one beautiful human child), one is all grey and the other four are black. I can’t believe black cats are the hardest to get adopted, because black cats are so wonderful, affectionate, and absolutely beautiful with their sleek black fur and gorgeous glowing eyes. All of my cats are older now, but I adopted them all when they were kittens. How many cats do you assist, Karen? (I am sorry I don’t already know…I am newer to your blog.)
Karen says
Hi Agatha,
Sounds like you are living the cat lady dream. I would love a multi-cat home, but my kitty “boss” insists one keeping me to himself.
So yeah, right now I have one cat, an American Shorthair named Tabs. He was a stray who literally walked into my apartment one day, decided that I was his human and then never left. We’ve been BFFs ever since. 🙂
If I could I would adopt a black cat. One with green eyes, ideally. I love the contrast of green eyes against that shiny black fur!
Have you always lived with cats? Funny enough, my husband and I were dog people until we met Tabs. He’s the most “dog-like” cat you’ll ever meet. He’s very outgoing and friendly, and he even walks on a leash.
Agatha says
Hi Karen,
Tabs sounds like an awesome kitty!!! How neat that he literally walked into your life and also made you an instant cat lover. I grew up with a dog-loving/cat-hating mom, but when I got married, moved to an apartment and found out cats were allowed, I ran out to the local humane society to adopt one. That was around 25-years ago and I’ve pretty much had cats ever since. I am 100% cat lover. In my opinion they are the purrfect friend. Give Tabs a hug from me. 🙂
Karen says
He’s a character. If you ever met him I think you’d fall in love with him too! He’s kind of a lover boy that way. 😀
What was the name of first kitty that you adopted? I’m sure he/she will always hold a special place in your heart.
Sometimes I feel like Tabs is and will always be that one special cat in my life…
(Just gave him a big squeeze for you! He was napping on the bed so I spooned him, LOL!)

Cute sneakers! I’m not feeling the best either Karen, stressed out a bit. Hope you feel better soon. Happy 4th July everybody!!
Karen says
Hi Denise,
I’m back from the parade. It cheered me up a little to see all the kids, floats and animals. Hope that your stress passes sooner than later. What are you up to today?
Rachel says
Cute outfit! Love the jewelry! Planning to light off some fireworks tonight if it doesn’t rain! It’s been a crappy summer here so far in North Dakota! Planning to go to my aunts lake cabin tomorrow just for the day. I could certainly get used to these 3 day weekends!
Karen says
Thank you, Rachel. Fireworks are illegal where I live because of the high fire danger. I will have to live vicariously through you. What are you going to do at your aunt’s lake cabin? Any water sports? Camping?
RedWeather Tiger says
I bought those Vans! Thank you for introducing them to me. They are GREAT!
Michaela says
Karen, you always look flawless with your beautiful skin. I have a question for you: do you ever go out without any make up at all on days you feel blah or do you at least put on some tinted moisturizer to feel ok before you go out?
Karen says
Hi Michaela,
Thank you. It’s the primer, concealer and foundation doing it’s work. 🙂 Thank goodness for makeup!
So, yeah…when I’m having days when I’m feeling blah, I do tend to wear at least a little bit when I go out. Usually brows, a little bit of undereye concealer and some tinted moisturizer. But if I’m totally not in the mood and not having it, then I’ll just skip it all, put my hair in a bun, throw on some glasses and call it a day, LOL.
What do you usually do? Do you like to cheer yourself up a little bit with some makeup before you venture out on those days?
Michaela says
Hi Karen, thank you for your response. To answer your last question the answer is “no” I usually put on full make up or none at all, but considering that I’m in my early 40’s (yes I’m an 80’s kid) I realize that if I want to look good as you I’ll need to do the work. And I realize that it’s not just vanity (ok, for me it is) but because it’s the least I can do to protect the skin and take care of it. I appreciate your sharing of good makeup tips on your blog and showing through your pictures that we can still “play” with makeup but not look too garish at our age.
Natalye says
your outfit is so cute! I love your shorts!
Karen says
Thank you!
Alison M says
Cute outfit! Love the yellow shorts 🙂 We opted for a trip to my brother-in-law’s, apple pie for dinner and lots of coffee. Enjoy your weekend!
Karen says
That sounds like fun. I hope there was vanilla ice cream! Gotta have vanilla ice cream with your apple pie.
BooBooNinja says
There’s something about putting on a cute outfit that lifts my spirits. I hope you’re feeling better, Karen.
Agata says
A really cute outfit. And I love your accessories! I have been into dresses lately, which is so unusual for me but I guess losing 60 lbs showed me I can look cute in a dress 🙂 I was wearing a flower print blue dress today and I got so many compliments on it 🙂
thepaigest says
You look ahhhhmazing! <3 Happy 4th!
Sylirael says
I hope you’re feeling better Karen! 🙂 I know what it’s like to sometimes just be in the ‘blah’ zone, and I don’t wish it on anyone!
You look fabulous in the pictures (as always) – wish I could pull off shorts like you (but I think there are laws against so much blindingly pale flesh being exposed to the public)!
Karen says
Aww, I think you should go for it. Pale skin is beautiful. Happy weekend!
Sylirael says
Hehe, I like my skin, but I always feel like I need to carry around free sunglasses, you know? 😀
Kim says
I love your outfit – so summery and cheerful! 🙂
Tanya says
OMGeeeeee, I am in LOVE with those shoes!! They are super cute and purrfect for us crazy cat ladies. 😉
