What’s up, girlfriend? Happy Friday. 🙂 Also known as Fri-yay.
Fridays are good days for ripped jeans around here. At least for me. El Hub feels differently about it. He’s always poking fun at me for wearing these (the ones in the pic at the top). He calls them my “railroad scamp pants” and says that all I need now is one of those long sticks with the red and white checkerboard handkerchief tied to the end with some peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in there and maybe a can of anchovies…
Oh, well. I like ’em! This pair is by Blank NYC. If you ask me about them in the comments, I’ll give you the scoop because guess what…?
It’s time for another OPEN THREAD!
Let’s catch up in the comments. I’m gonna be around. Valid topics of discussion include makeup, jeans and other garments, refreshing beverages, tasty recipes, work romances and other conundrums, seasonal allergies (so sniffly today!), roller skates, blogging, photography, movies, TV shows (Game of Thrones this Sunday!), cats, dogs, rabbits, flamingos, ferrets and…OK, pretty much anything.
See you in the comments.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. TGIF!
Agata says
I love open thread, it should be a usual Friday column!
I wouldn’t wear ripped jeans myself but I think they look good on you!
In clothes department, I just got my top from Loft yesterday and I love it- it’s a basic tee with a flower pattern but the quality seems really nice and it fits great!
Karen says
Hi Agata,
Thanks for the heads up on the sale. I just put a few accessories in my cart.
I want to see a pic of your shirt!
Agata says
I have a feeling Loft will be my new obsession, lol.
Here is the top http://www.loft.com/floral-broken-in-tee/362984?skuId=18268980&catid=catl000011&defaultColor=7722. I also got these bracelets, they were less than $8.00 and I thought they were really cute http://www.loft.com/neon-charm-bracelet-set/360057?colorExplode=true&skuId=18679908&catid=catl000023&productPageType=fullPriceProducts&defaultColor=5239.
What else did you put in your cart?
Karen says
I saw that top in the store and it is super cute! Love the colors. Great choice! I think LOFT is my new obsession too. I hear that that clothes hold up well so here’s to hoping that is true!
OK, so here are the things in my cart, which will probably change like five times today, haha!
The Crystal Fan Necklace:

And the Delicate Bead Necklace:

Agata says
I love the necklaces you picked, especially the fan crystal one!
On Wed I also went to Old Navy (I don’t go there too often because there isn’t one near me) and they had a ton of cute stuff. I bought a super simple cotton sleeveless dress for summer for only $15 and it fits super nice. With Old Navy I feel like you need to try stuff on first because their sizes are never consistent!
Shannon says
Hi Agata! Just had to pop in and say I love that top! Super cute. It looks so comfy, too!
Agata says
Thanks Shannon, it is comfy and really soft!
Stephanie says
I had a bunch of Loft stuff in my cart and last night I finally decided to pull the trigger and almost everything is sold out! Boo! I’m sad. My fault for hesitating though. There was a super cute floral 3/4 sleeve sweater I wanted, it’s gone. I’m hoping Loft realizes the reason it sold out is because we want cute florals and they’ll either restock it or get something similar.
I LOVE Loft.
Karen says
Bummer that you weren’t able to grab your goodies, Stephanie. I hear that they have sales all the time, so hopefully you’ll be able to get some cute things soon.
I haven’t shopped there in ages and just recently rediscovered the store. How are you liking the pieces you’ve had for a while? Do they hold up well?
Agata says
It happens to me all the time with other stores, I wait too long and by the time I am ready to commit the items I want, are gone, usually forever!
But a floral sweater sounds perfect!
Stephanie says
Everything I’ve purchased has held up really well and washed well. I have some pieces that are several years old.
This is the sweater, unfortunately I can’t wear a small or extra small:

Shannon says
Man, do I need to get a new pair of jeans! I have ONE pair of trusty-dusty skinnies from American Eagle. I’ll probably need to upgrade and stop getting my jeans from there at some point, but they’re just SO comfy and tend to fit my body really well. And I can’t stand shopping for jeans, for some reason. Too many options that don’t fit well, I think (that gap in the back! #UGH) and it gets frustrating. Just knowing I can walk in and pull something off the shelf at AE that will look good has ruined me, ha! How do you handle the jean-struggle, Karen? You always seem to have good recs on high quality pairs. Do you like jean shopping?
Karen says
Hey Shannon,
I think jeans are even harder to shop for than swimsuits, to be honest. To make it easier I do research before I go into a store; I’ll look at styles on the website and read the reviews, and take notes of what I think will work for me. That way when I go in it’s not like I’m starting from scratch, you know? I also have a working knowledge of what I like – a little bit of stretch (but not too much), petite sizing, mid-rise (hides the muffin top), that kind of thing.
You must share the name of those AE jeans! I’ve never tried that brand before and I’m always looking for good skinnies.
Shannon says
I think they’re just their standard AEO “Skinny” jeans – low-rise, and I usually get them in a short. Kind of on the casual side, but I don’t mind at $30-$40 a pop. I also adore their “Favorite Boyfriend” jeans – they’re also low-rise, but I’ve had like 2 or 3 pairs in the past. They make my butt look SUPER cute, haha! I might need to start venturing into the mid-rise territory for their jeans, though, for the sake of my muffin top. 😉 I got some mid-rise shorts there last year, and I adore them. Their bottoms are just COMFALICIOUS.
AE jeans usually last about 9-12 months for me, (though I have a pair of shorts that’s lasted me… 8 years now? sheesh!) but some/most stores have a policy where they’ll replace your jeans if you wear through them, they rip, or if something breaks (zipper or button or whatever). I’ve only done it once, but I took in a pair that I’d worn through near the inseam – the floor manager had to call her supervisor to check, but she came back out and was like, “yep, we stand by our jeans” and gave me a new pair, in the most similar style they had. Their jeans are so affordable in the first place it almost seems silly, but when you’re on a tight budget it means a heck of a lot.
Karen says
Butt cuteness is a high priority, FOR REALS! Making a note to try on the Favorite Boyfriend jeans next time I’m in SF at the AE store. 😀 And thanks for the heads up on the replacement policy. I hope that the store near me has that in place because that’s AWESOME.
If you haven’t already check out the Rockstar Mid-Rise Skinny Jeans at Old Navy. Super affordable and they fit great too. I’d suggest sizing down as they do stretch out a little throughout the day.
Metta says
I love those jeans, did they come ripped or is this your doing? Either way very cute! BTW have you checked out the new Tom Ford Summer collection? I am dying for cream and powder eye color
Karen says
Hi Metta,
The jeans come ripped! What I like about them is that in the ripped parts, there’s actually fabric underneath, so that my legs don’t get cold. Here’s a link in case you’re interested:
BLANKNYC Destroyed Boyfriend Jeans (Torn to Shreds)
And yes, I have checked out the new Tom Ford. I’m testing it today. 🙂
Hope you’re having a nice Friday so far! What are your plans for the weekend?
Metta says
Yay! Can’t wait to check out your swatches! Thanks for the link, may have to snag a pair. For my weekend I’m going to go and embarrass myself at the skating rink with the kids, everyone in sight will probably get a good laugh! Hope you have a good one!
Karen says
Ooh, skating! Are you ice skating or roller skating? Honestly I’m pretty bad at most sports (especially ones that involve projectiles) but the balancing sports like skating — now that I can do! HAVE FUN!
Amy says
Hi Karen! Cute pants. Love the fashion updates! Latest score here: long striped north face skirt from Moosejaw. I’m totally not outdoorsy these days but just happened upon it, and it works. Oh and brooks running shoes, their natural line. Have you tried any “barefoot” sneaks? What are your fave running shoes at the moment? Windy day here, thunderstorms have been making the air smell great. Hope you have an inspiring day!
Karen says
Hi Amy!
OOh, tell me more about that skirt! I usually wear my Zella Capris (THE BEST) but am always looking for cute options for outdoor activities.
So, I haven’t tried any barefoot sneakers. Have you? They kind of freak me out to be honest. I’m a creature of habit when it comes to running! I have to have things a certain way otherwise I seriously can’t function. How often do you run? I try to get in a few 3-4 mile runs during the week and a longer 5-6 mile run on the weekend.
Re: running shoes! I’m wearing the Brooks Ravenna these days.
Amy says
The skirt is the north face Ava maxi. Tried to copy a link but my phone is acting up. Runs a little big but it’s not too long. I’m 5’5″ and the M is the right length, so on you XS maybe? I wear it for errands and relaxed days, sooooo comfy! I will look up those Zella capris too!
Running shoes: i tried the Newtons, not barefoot but zero drop, which i really liked. But somehow not perfect for me. Ended up with the Brooks Pureflow. Also not barefoot but more “natural” i think they call it. Minimal drop and super lightweight. I love them!
Karen says
OK I just googled the Ava and it is SO cute. I like the light gray one (it’ll hide the tabby hairs). I’ll see if I can find it next time I’m at Sports Authority or REI so I can try it on. I love maxi skirts but have a hard time finding ones with the right length. That one looks so comfy though.
The Zella capris will change your life. Everything that I’ve bought from Zella holds up great. I love them so much I wrote a blog post about them awhile back! Here it is in case you’re interested:
WARNING: You May Literally Want to Live In These Zella Live-In Capris
Amy says
Thanks Karen! 🙂
Karen says
Your welcome! Let me know if you ever need help picking out some Zella. I have a lot of their pieces!
Icequeen81 says
because I am in the teaching, I avoid those 🙂 , but sure they are pretty, maybe with a lace long pantie lines underneath it.
Karen says
The great thing about these is that you don’t have to wear anything underneath! The ripped parts have patches sewn in underneath them so that no skin shows. I usually don’t mind a little skin, but I DO mind being cold, LOL!
Happy Friday to you! What are you doing this weekend? I hope the kids were well behaved this week!
Icequeen81 says
Ooooh those don’t show skin 🙂 that’s good,then they are great 🙂
No kids this week we have Easter vacation no kids and no teens for me this week.
we don’t have nothing planned yet ad you?
Karen says
Yeah! I’ve been looking for a perfect pair and these were it!
I hope that you’ve been enjoying your vacation. Did you relax at home?
My in-laws are visiting us this weekend, so we’ll take them sightseeing today and tomorrow. 🙂
Icequeen81 says
yes, I sure relaxed 🙂 I needed it 🙂
have a great time with the in laws, is always nice to have family time
Karen says
Honestly when I have downtime most of the time all I want to do is just veg! Gotta recharge those batteries, you know?
Oh, and yes, it’s always good to have family time. We haven’t seen them since Christmas/New Year’s so it should be fun. They like to eat out at restaurants so we’ll do a lot of that; plus, there’s some cute towns around Marin county that will be fun to explore.
Icequeen81 says
Happy Friday for you too 🙂
Icequeen81 says
Is necessary to work an family bond, enjoy the weekend, Yes vacation are necessary to recharge, some pamper time 🙂
for my hair face etc 🙂
Karen says
LOL so true! My favorite thing about those relaxed vacation days is SLEEP. 🙂
Icequeen81 says
ooo yess sleep and pampering time
Icequeen81 says
wat are you planning to eat which kind of food?
Karen says
There’s an Italian place that I think they’ll like in one of the towns we’re exploring. They also LOVE Thai food. Is there any Thai food places in your neck of the woods?
Icequeen81 says
Yes, there are 2 I think, we visited one and the other one we still have to visit. I loooove thay food, I love food with coconut and curry. also love ginger on food. we don’t have good Italians over here. You also should give it a try to Lebanese food.
Karen says
I had Lebanese food once years ago and it was REALLY GOOD! Can you recommend some dishes for me to try next time I go?
Icequeen81 says
chicken shawarma, with that garlic sauce just good 🙂
chicken kebbab
and any chicken dishes with yogurt, lemon and garlic.
They do have a dish with chick peas witch is also delicious.
They do have dishes with difficult names , so those are the dishes I can remember by name 🙂
Poo@beautyandmakeupmatters says
The jeans looks prettyy.. though i dont own any till date 😛 .. but have you tried ripping you normal jean all by yourself ? or have you ever cut short your jean to hot pants? 😉
Karen says
LOL! No. Maybe if I was 24…
Petra says
Love the jeans! I only had the worn to death – ripped jeans that was ripped in less flattering places. I have yet been able to throw those out even tho they are tooo small and ripped to shreds.
But those allergies.. spring is finally making its slow start in Stockholm and let me tell you, it is both a blessing and a curse. My eyes are running non-stop and I do not go far from my trusted tissues. Eye makeup is off the table so I have busted out all my bright lipsticks to make up for it 🙂
I got some ny medicine today so I am hoping it will improve!
Happy friday!
Karen says
Hi Petra,
LOL, funny you should mention having jeans that are ripped in less flattering places because I have a pair just like that. I held off buying a ripped pair for so long because I figured, “Why pay for ripped jeans when I have a ripped pair in my closet?” The thing is they are ripped in the butt cheek and the inner thigh area, haha! Not so cute. I can’t bear to throw them out because they’re super worn in and they still fit (kinda), so I just use them for when I’m doing things like cleaning around the house.
Sorry to hear about your allergies, I feel your pain! Mine are terrible right now. If I’m outside for even less than five minutes my throat starts getting scratchy and my eyes start to water. Good call on the bright lipsticks. Have you tried any waterproof mascaras, by the way? I love brights and love them EVEN MORE when they’re paired with long, lush lashes.
Petra says
Only use water restistent mascara (the wash of with warm water kind – all others are all around my eyes before lunchtime) but the red puffiness of my eyes are best concealed by drawing focus elsewhere – and wearing glasses, not that contacts are even an options at this point. It tends to get better after a while, getting used to it I guess.
My jeans are the same, plus on the front where the pockets are – keys wear out jeans in a heart beat.
Karen says
I do the same thing! I’m actually looking for a new pair of glasses because mine are so old and beat up. I’ve been thinking of getting a pair from Warby Parker, have you heard of them?
Petra says
nope but after a quick google search I say “NICE!” most of it is not my style but I can see you rock most of these. I get a classy with a quirky side – wibe from collection. Me I go for a more strikt style for my “I-am-blind-without-them”-glasses with dark metal frames (green this time – last pair was the same frames in a dark bronze) and as the man at home says “locust eyes” when it comes to shades. And sunglasses I always get the cheap and cheerful ones since I am constantly breaking or loosing them. My favorites are from H&M (a quick currency exchange in my heads) which I got for like 6 bucks. I stocked up when they went on half of sale and I have spares, but not as many as I did… (similar to these but no metal detail http://www.hm.com/us/product/21462?article=21462-A)
Oh this got a bit long.. haha
Karen says
Oh those are cute! I like the detailing on the side. I LOVE affordable sunnies! Here in the US I usually get mine from Target. Haven’t tried the H&M ones — do they hold up well?
P.S. That’s awesome that you rock the green frames. I wish I could be more adventurous when it comes to color in my eye wear. I’m usually a neutrals kind of girl.
Stephanie says
Oh thank you for the Warby Parker recommendation! I had The Cutest pair of Kate Spade glasses, I LOVED them. I lost them in the house and have not been able to find them. I need glasses but I’m so heartbroken about losing them I haven’t been able to commit to another frame. I keep searching for something unique, I think I might find something I like from Warby Parker.
Karen says
You’re welcome, Stephanie! I’ve heard from friends that it helps to stop by a Warby Parker store if you can. Some of the gals mentioned that the fit of the frames can be a little tricky.
Tracy says
Hi Karen,
Love the jeans! I have a pair that have a huge hold in the knee and every single time my foot goes right through so I appreciate the extra fabric inside. I’m putting together my lists for both the 20% at Ulta and the closed door event at Sephora on Sunday for the 15% sales and soon I’ll be living in a hovel 🙂 I’m dying to try the new CoverFX cover drops and I want to find a new fragrance for spring.
On a sadder note we had to put our 12yr old kitty down due to cancer and our 5year old freaked out and wouldn’t stop crying. So about a week later adopted a 1yr old from our local shelter and they were best buds the first night we brought him home. Guess it was meant to be!
Karen says
Hi Tracy,
I’m very sorry for your loss, but I’m happy to hear that your new kitty family member is settling in nicely. Tabs sends purrs and hugs!
Karen says
Oh — and about makeup! What’s on your Sephora and Ulta lists?
Tracy says
Yes the lists!
Ulta –
Whish Deodorant Swipe with Hair Inhibitor
Love & Toast handcream in Honey Coconut (this is my HG)
UD Sheer Revolution Lipstick in Slowburn
Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water
Sephora-
Nars Contour Blush in Olympia
Cover FX Custom Cover Drops
Jack Black All Day Oil-Control Lotion (for the hubs-who is such a good sport for joining me at the event)
CHANEL COCO Eau de Parfum
Kat Von D – Shade and Light Eye Palette
Karen says
Ahh, the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water is on my list too! 😀
Have you tried any of the products by Shea Moisture at Ulta? I tried their body scrub a while back and it is AMAZING.
Tracy says
I haven’t tried it yet but I may just have a lookie when I go in there after work. I’m kinda over the tree hut scrub.
Karen says
It is really good. I used my jar all the way to the last drop! Here’s a review in case you’re interested:

I haven’t tried the Tree Hut one. Sounds kind of earthy!
Nicole says
Would love to hear your thoughts on a good eye cream that helps with fine lines and dark circles. Also, what in your opinion could I do to make my eyes pop more. I’m not a fan of eyeliner, will mascara alone do the trick?
Karen says
Hi Nicole,
To be honest I’m still looking for an eye cream to rock my world. I’ve been testing ones from Fresh and SKII and they’re both OK. They moisturize and layer well under makeup but as for fine lines and dark circles I haven’t seen a significant difference.
Gals, if anyone can recommend a GREAT eye cream for both me and Nicole that addresses fine lines and dark circles please share!
OK, so, to make your eyes pop more. Do you mean you want to brighten them? Or are you interested in wearing color?
Nicole says
Yes, brighten them without color, or is there a nude/ nudish color that I can apply to the lid that would help. I have the eyelash curler and mascara thing down, just looking for something else to make them look bigger.
Also, I’ve been shopping at The Loft for a long time. I have clothes in my closet from them that are older than my 6 y/o. Love them, just don’t buy anything unless it’s on sale because they’re always running a sale.
Karen says
OK, got it.
Here’s one thing I find really helps make my eyes look bigger/brighter: lightly buff a shimmer or a sheen shadow (usually a beige shade) into the inner tear duct of the eyes. It really helps to brighten! You can also do the inner corners too if you want even more of a brightening effect. I do this in almost all of my looks to open up the eyes.
You can see it here with a gold shadow: https://www.makeupandbeautyblog.com/mac-makeup/cause-one-can-never-wear-enough-neutrals-a-face-of-the-day-with-the-nude-dude-volume-2-eye-palette-by-thebalm/

Let me know if you have any questions!
Adrienne Godish says
I happen to adore the Verso super 8 eye serum. A little goes a long way and it is expensive, but it’s the only thing I’ve found to be effective.
Karen says
Thanks, Adrienne. Gonna make a note to look it up! How long have you been using it?
Adrienne Godish says
Hey Karen,
I’ve been using it for about 3 months now, and I almost don’t need any help in the under eye department anymore. I can pretty much do away wit the corrector altogether.
Cristina says
I’m wearing my ripped jeans today, too! I just started wearing them again last week after a long hiatus. I adopted a cat in October, and she attacked the shreds every time I wore them, teeth AND claws! Now she’s settled in and doesn’t notice the rips anymore. And, my husband definitely doesn’t get the ripped jean thing…
I picked up one of your recs today. Smashbox pore minimizing primer. Next I’m trying to find an unscented dupe of the NYX Intense Butter Gloss in Tres Leches. LOVE the look and feel, but the taste and smell is beyond horrible for this sensitive girl!
Karen says
Hi Christina,
Yay for kitties! What’s your cat’s name? And what’s her personality like?
I hope that you love the Smashbox Pore Minimizing Primer. I seriously use mine every day.
Happy Friday to you!
Cristina says
Her name is Smudge and she just turned 1. I was worried she wouldn’t end up being a lap kitty, but that’s exactly what she is! She meows at me until I sit to snuggle so she can sleep on my lap. Makes it hard for me to work! But I love it. I never thought my husband would agree to a cat, but he adores her, too!
Allison C says
Geez, those ripped jeans look so cute on you! I couldn’t pull it off at all. Plus it’s still 38 degrees here and freezing! I can hardly wait till it’s warm enough to wear my ankle length pale blue & white striped jeans! I picked up a couple of new items – ruffled cobalt blue sweater, black tunic with blue & teal bugle bead embellishments – but they’re more transitional than summer-y at this point. Don’t have any real questions, but have a great weekend, Karen!
Karen says
Hi Allison,
I like these because they have patches sewn underneath the ripped parts, so I don’t get cold! It’s genius!
You have a great weekend too. 🙂
Adrienne Godish says
Hey Karen!
You’ve tried pretty much every foundation under the sun so I was wordering if you could give me a recommendation. I am looking for a lightweight foundation that has eno ugh coverage for redness and whatnot but still lets my skin show through. I really like the glowy look, but it can sometimes emphasize pores and lines and I don’t want that. I have really fair skin (think nars siberia just more neutral) and am looking for an effortless kind of formula that won’t cling to dry patches. Anything you have to say would help!!
Karen says
Hi Adrienne,
Right now I’m SUPER obsessed with the Diorskin Nude Air Serum foundation. It pretty much checks everything off of your list. Blurs pores, velvet matte finish, lightweight and medium coverage which you can build up to full or sheer out. The only thing is the shade selection isn’t nearly extensive as some other lines like MAC or NARS, so you’ll want to get a sample first before committing.
I also really like the NARS Tinted Moisturizer. Wide shade range and lets your skin show while covering redness. It looks beautiful with a fuller coverage powder (I like the Hourglass Oxygen ones) too if you want more of a formal look to the skin. I’ve recommended this product to several of my girlfriends who like more of a natural look (but still want some coverage) and they love it.
Oh — one more is L’Oreal’s True Match Lumi. A friend got me hooked on this foundation. Lightweight, covers well, great for glowy skin.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions. 🙂
Adrienne Godish says
Thank you so much for the recommendation! I don’t have any friends that share my obsession with makeup. This is what I imagine that would be like! Love you, and love keeping tabs on tabs! I have a calico myself who is super fat and attitudinal
Kim says
I have the same requirements and I agree with all of those recommendations! NARS TM has been my ride or die for a year and is one of the only tinted moisturizers that I find has enough coverage for my surface redness. And I LOVE the new Dior. I tried a sample but I want to figure out what shade to get and pick it up soon.
Shayna says
I feel like a Grandma for this but I don’t get ripped or distressed jeans. I have one pair that has two distressed spots on the
them, I’ve worn them once and had them 2+ years. You know what, I think this just inspired me go through my clothes and donate things I don’t wear!
Karen says
Hi Shayna,
Ya know, I didn’t get them for the longest time, but I tried a pair on and liked them more than I thought I would. I’ve found that they look super cute paired with a boyfriend blazer, a tee and flats! Kind of casual chic.
Happy Friday to you! What are you up to this weekend?
Ruchita says
Yay! I finally caught one of the open threads. I recently bought a pair of high waist skinny jeans from the Gap. They actually had my (petite) size in store and it was a miracle that they fit perfectly. I like the high waist b/c it holds stuff in place. 🙂
So glad it’s Friday! For some reason this week has felt extra long.
Karen says
Hi Ruchita! (And kitties)
Oooh, so tell me about this high waist action. I like the look of it but have a short torso so I can’t always pull it off. Do you remember the name of the cut? I’ll have to try them on the next time I go to Gap.
How are things? Have you baked anything interesting lately? I’ve been doing a lot more cooking, but not so much baking other than the oatmeal thumbprint cookies that I’ve been obsessed with for the last month.
Ruchita says
I believe they are the true skinny high-rise jeans, in a dark wash. I have a short torso as well, but I tend to wear long enough tops that hit at the hips or a more tunic length so you can’t really tell they are that high. I have a short torso as well and they come up past my belly button. I like that there is no muffin top with these!
Things are good! We took a short trip to New Orleans at the end of March, which was fun. It’s finally getting warmer here so the kitties are enjoying going out an eating grass. Although we’ve had thunderstorms this past week, which means they have been running for cover.
Not much baking going on, but I did make a cake (yellow with chocolate frosting) for my Dad’s birthday. My mom, who isn’t much of a dessert person said she ate most of it and didn’t leave much for him. 🙂 The oatmeal cookies sound yummy!
Karen says
OK, cool. Just added them to the list! I like it when high-waisted pants hit around the belly button but not the ribcage. These sound promising. 🙂
How fun that you were able to visit New Orleans! I would love to go someday to just eat. I hear the food is amazing. Did you have beignets at Cafe du Monde?
Wow, that cake sounds delicious. And now I’m hungry for cake…
Here is a pic of the oatmeal cookies! I eat them for breakfast. 🙂
https://www.makeupandbeautyblog.com/daily-beauty-cat/cookies-for-breakfast-awesome/
Ruchita says
those cookies look delicious! I would totally eat them for breakfast.
We ate beignets, gumbo and po’ boys. 🙂 Also, my husband is a huge fan of craft cocktails so we visited some fun bars. The Carousel Bar in the Hotel Monteleone actually rotates. It’s very cool!
Nesa P says
Loving the jeans, but where did ya get the tee? Btw Yellow Cat says hey to Tabs!
Karen says
Hi Nesa!
It’s the Linen Pocket Tee from Loft. I got it on sale a while back for 40% off:
http://www.loft.com/petite-linen-pocket-tee/369787?colorExplode=false&skuId=18536386&catid=catl000034&productPageType=search&defaultColor=6400
Suzanne says
Wow, are ripped jeans back? There’s a blast from the past. If I had bangs, I’d tease them in celebration of the return of ripped jeans. 😉
My 12 y/o fashionista just informed me that jean jackets are back, too. (She declined my offer of a classic Skid Row cassette tape to go along with the acid-washed jacket she wants. What is wrong with that child?) Oh my lord, and jellies are back, too! Most uncomfortable shoe ever invented. Ugh, foot sweat. Well, thank goodness I have a 12 y/o to keep me on the cutting edge of pre-teen fashion trends.

Jean vests are back too. Remember those?! I wish I could find mine from the ’90s!
And thank you for the Skid Row throwback. I had the album and would play I Remember You on repeat. LOL!

I actually still listen to I Remember You every now and then! It reminds me of a friend from high school who committed suicide years ago. He was the first boy I ever kissed. He was a fabulous singer and I can still hear him singing that song in the hallway on the way to English class.

I am so going to TJ’s for the cheese you recommended (among other things that is). There was this other cheese I tried and it was delicious. It was a cheddar cheese and had chives in it. But I can’t remember what it was called. Knowing me I will buy a lot of stuff at Trader Joe’s that I don’t need haha.
And I have a 20% off Ulta coupon with minimal restrictions. Ulta happens to be right next to where this Mexican restaurant I am going to eat at is. So I might pick some stuff up there too!
Fun stuff! Happy Friday Karen!
Karen says
I hope you do! They were handing out samples of that cheese last weekend at my TJ’s, which is how I found it. My hubby had a bite and ran over to me afterwards and was like, “YOU HAVE TO TRY THIS CHEESE!” It’s really good on just plain bread or with crackers. I’m salivating just thinking about it.
So what’s on your Ulta list?!
Elena says
Well, I think everything I wanted is either a-sold out or b-not on the sales floor yet. So I will have to order online.
I was eyeing the Urban Decay Double the Perversion set. That mascara worked well for me. $28 for 2 full sized mascaras+20% off is a really good deal! (as long as it hasn’t sold out online). I was also eyeing the Lorac Alter Ego Heartbreaker Palette. The bright colors look fun!

Something I have been loving recently are my jeans from Aeropostale! They’re not even really jeans, kind of like stiff leggings, because they are so flexible and soft!
Happy Fri-yay!
Open thread FTW!

Hey Lauren S.,
Oh, that line is new to me. Do you remember the name of the jeans? I love flexible and soft! Those are the magic words when it comes to denim for me. LOL

These speed skater thighs can’t handle ripped jeans, I just look like the She-Hulk or a bag lady.
Distressing I can do in moderation.

So, I’m totally using your picture as Exhibit A in the next of the Senate Judiciary Committee-esque hearings my 14 y/o daughter likes to hold to judge my clothing. I have a similar pair, and Lil Miss Judgy-Pants likes to tell me I’m too old to wear them (I’m 38! HOW is that old??????)
I’m on a damn MISSION this weekend to find an undereye concealer that won’t make me want to throw myself off a roof. I need something hydrating, brightening, non-irritating, can’t-even-tell-I’m-wearing-it, that will fix the monster circles I’m dealing with lately.
Finally, speaking of missions, let me tell you about my cats’ latest mission. If an item is on a flat surface anywhere in the house, and can be knocked to the floor, they must do so immediately. I have 2 tortie girls that I kinda love and hate at the same time–this new and fun activity of their’s isn’t helping.

So, today I bought the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Blushed Copper. Holy Moly, Batman! I just can’t! It’s everything that makeup junkies say it is. It’s so pretty & is warm-girl/brown girl friendly. Couldn’t even wait for the annual Spring Sale bc I didn’t wanna risk not being able to get my paws on it bc it’s LE. Also, NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, whereHaveyouBeenallMyLife! Dude! I’ve been completely sleeping on this stuff. But I solved that today when I picked up a tube at Sephora as well.
Oh and ripped jeans! Yes, please! I got a cute paid from Tar-jay last year but I’ve been contemplating getting another pair. The ones you’re wearing are super cute. Totes about to go on the hunt for a stylish pair for yours truly =)

Yay, open thread!! I’ve a quick question Karen, do you have any recommendations for a full coverage, nude lipstick for pigmented lips? Preferably something beigey.. Thanks so much in advance!!

Hi Karen!
I’m so happy it’s Friday. It’s been a long work week. Love the jeans on you. I was looking at my pile of clothes and noticed that I don’t have as many jeans anymore. I’ve been living in leggings and nice stretchy pants I bought from Uniqlo. I used to love James Jeans and Joe Jeans but I hate having to go have them altered. I also like the skinny jeans at Old Navy.
I was looking for thick comfy running socks and I remembered you had suggested a brand when you ran your half. What brand was it again?

Loving your ripped jeans! I have a pair by Express….the holes have ripped even more but I can’t bear to get rid of the jeans because they fit so well. I will probably sew and patch the jeans until I can’t anymore. My best jean brands are Express and Victoria’s Secret (when Victoria’s Secret made jeans not so long ago). Express has the closest fit to VS, which had the best fit for me. Express isn’t cheap at up to $80 a pair…but I’ve had many of the pairs I have for several years now, so it’s worth it. They have great skinnies, for anyone looking for skinny jeans or jeggings. I wear boot cut mostly. I do have AE jeans and they are great, but can stretch a bit. I’d still recommend them though. I’ve tried everything from Old Navy to Guess (at the more expensive end), and Express has the best look and fit. I also swear by Express for dress/suit pants…The Editor is a great, flattering cut and goes with many things.

Lmao!! Your husband is too funny! My mom is the same way lol. I wore a pair of ripped jeans not too long ago and she asked where the rest of my clothes were. LOL! I got a huge kick out of that. I guess ripped jeans just aren’t ideal for most people. I love them though! Sometimes I’m a little leery about buying them ripped. Even though some styles are super cute. I feel like it can easily be done at home lol

I love the fan necklace from Loft!
Thank you for sharing your finds with us
I am driving to my closest Loft tomorrow after my boys soccer game to pick it up.

I can’t stand the idea of new ripped jeans. If you wouldn’t wear other ripped items, why would you wear these? This was an 80’s idea that never really should have seen the light of day. I cringe every time I see these advertised or worn by anyone.

Don’t think that I’ve ever had any pairs of ripped jeans. Maybe I’ll try a pair on the next time I’m out clothes shopping. Finally mostly settled from moving although there is still a bit more to do. Gave me an excuse to go to Ikea as I needed to pick up a couple of bookcases for the new place. Now the gameplan is to get back to job hunting full time. Want to get back to being gainfully employed.

This is a makeup comment and a big thank you!!
A while ago you reviewed Smashbox Undereye Primer. I am a concealer freak and had been searching for a HG concealer with good coverage that wouldn’t start out looking nice and then end up creasing and looking awful by the end of the day. I read your review of the Smashbox primer and went to Sephora the very next day and yeah, they had it in stock and I got one immediately. I have been using it and loving it ever since. Now all those concealer tries that used to end up a mess stay put where I put them and have been far less disappointing money-wasters. Thank you SO much for that great review and product recommendation! It changed my concealer life!!!

I need to get some new jeans. My issue is that I went team yoga pants a few years ago and now when I put on jeans I just keep thinking “my butt doesn’t look as good”. I need pairs that are stretchy but don’t get saggy and that have a waist that’s at least midrise and doesn’t cut in. Oh and I usually need them to come in lengths too because I’m 5’10”.
So a random note, have you gone to spin class? I went on Monday for the first time and oh my lawd were my quads sore. So sore in fact that I had to do the stiff-legged walk, and since I have a physical job I spent a LOT of time walking around like that. After a few days of it, my IT bands are angry! I’m on Day 6 now and just starting to be able to bend my knees to an almost normal degree after tons of time with the heat pad, foam rolling, extra sleep, extra protein, plenty of ibuprofen, and upping my omega 3 intake. It was fun and I’d like to go again but I’m scared now!
