Hello and happy Friday, my friend! Here, have a Pink Power Smoothie. 🙂
It’s a good day — no, a GREAT day — for an open thread, where we’ll talk about anything — makeup, cats, skincare, food (although I don’t know how much help I’ll be in that department), blogging, photography, pineapples, what have you… It’s like coffee talk, except we’ll have smoothies.
Warm up those fingers, and I’ll meet you in the comments! The open thread starts right meow…
How to Make a Pink Power Smoothie
Adapted from Oh She Glows
Incidentally, I feel ready to take on the freakin’ world when I have one of these bad boys for breakfast, and it holds me over till lunch. My version leaves out the coconut oil…because that was just a little too rich for my tum, but even without it, it’s still filling.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup water or coconut water
1/2 medium avocado (pit removed)
2 celery stalks, diced
1/2 cup frozen strawberries
1/2 cup frozen raspberries
1 small/medium lightly steamed beet, ends trimmed and diced
1 lemon, juiced
1 tsp of honey (or to taste)Directions:
Wash and lightly steam the beet (you could leave the beet raw, but my blender can’t handle that ish), then chop, chop, chop it!
Place in a blender and blend on high until smooooove.
Add more honey if you like.
Slurp it all up, YUM!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. TGIF!

TGIF! I currently have inflammation in my lungs from running an agility test in the bitter cold, dry air on Saturday. I’m not cold-virus sick, but more like I took a beating from that. On a makeup note, on Sunday I had bought the UD Naked on the Run palette and I absolutely love it. So perfect for a natural but sexy look. The shadows were perfect for a natural smokey eye. And totally loving the liner and lip gloss.
Karen says
Hi Katherine M,
It’s been a while. Miss you!
Bummer about your lungs; I hope you feel better soon. How did your running agility test go, though?
Funny that you should mention Naked on the Run because lately it’s been my go-to UD palette. I wear it all the time, especially on the weekends.
What other makeup things have you been loving lately? Me, I’ve been into Bobbi Brown’s cream shadow sticks, Estee Lauder Little Black Primer (almost had a meltdown when I couldn’t find it) and Rimmel Bronzer.
Katherine M says
My agility test went well! Passed everything with flying colors. Great minds think alike on Naked on the Run 🙂 It’s a great palette. Very flattering all around.
Miss you too! I have to get into Bobbi Brown. Haven’t bought any of her makeup yet, but she has some great stuff. I am really loving this gel liner I got by Stila in Perfect Black Orchid. I am also loving Sonia Kashuk highlighter in Persian Sunset – it’s really great for subtle contouring with the UD Naked on the Run bronzer.
Erin says
I can only stand celery in Mirepoix! Other than that it looks good!
Karen says
You could leave it out and sub it for something else. An apple would work.
Kiss & Make-up says
I wanna dive in that glass and BATHE in it, it looks delicious! Have a good Easter weekend, Karen!
Karen says
It is SO good. I just finished mine off. What’s the plan for Easter?
Kiss & Make-up says
Oh just having a relaxing day at home with my man 🙂 Tomorrow we’re baking cookies. The ultimate chocolate cookies :-O
Karen says
Yum! What makes them “the ultimate” ? Inquiring minds want to know.
Kiss & Make-up says
I put the recipe on Instagram earlier if you’d like to see it 🙂 It’s a recipe from a – get ready for this – gaming cookbook! My fiancé chipped in for a kickstarter game years ago (Pillars of Eternity) and the guy who released the game decided to also release a mini cookbook with it, mostly with dessert recipes, just for the kickstarter folks. It’s pretty cool. Everything looks delicious and he wrote it with a bit of a fantasy twist to it, it’s neat! If you want to check it out I can email it to you or you can check out the recipe on my IG page, kissandmakeupsbeautyblog.
Karen says
That’s so random! I take it the gamer is a good cook. Good for him!
Stephanie says
GOOD TIMING! I had a question for you JUST THIS MORNING that… now I forget. I’ll work on it and watch the thread!
Karen says
When you remember I’ll be here!
TGIF, Stephanie!
Stephanie says
Yes, TGIF! Now I’m going to prod you with random questions about everything. I really need to know someone offline that I could talk to about this stuff and learn from! I feel so not good at taking care of my skin and experimenting with makeup. It’s so pretty but I never know how to make myself look glowing and fabulous – or maybe it’s that I don’t feel fabulous period?
*ahem* Anyway. Do you have a favorite moisturizing lipstick? Maybe in wild colors? My lips are still dying from winter. As is my hair, but that’s another story.
Karen says
Hi Stephanie,
Aww, I know how it is to feel not so good about taking care of your skin… I go through those phases. For me, a big part of it is what I’m eating or drinking, to be honest. I find that when I don’t have enough water in my system or if I’m eating lots of junk food (it happens) it definitely shows on my skin. When good stuff goes in (dark green leafy veggies, lots of water, antioxidants), my skin is less cranky. For glowing and fabulous… GURL, highlighter helps. My fave right now is MAC Hush. It’s a cream highlighter that you can wear on top of bare skin, foundation and even powder. Looks natural and not overdone, but still fab.
As for favorite moisturizing lipstick in a wild color, how about Hourglass Fever?
Prep your lips first with Nuxe Reve de Miel lip balm (it is the BEST!), let the balm sink in for five minutes, blot, then apply Fever on top.

I’ve got Nikita trained with a harness, but gosh, that cat wants to do whatever she wants. Eating all the grass, sniffing the neighbour’s yard for their cats (she’s an Alpha). We move 50 meters/minute if we’re (no, if I’m) lucky. It’s fun for her and me, but what would be MORE fun for me would be if I could take her for walks like you and Tabs. Did you do anything to encourage him to go for walk-walks?
Yeah… I know it’s a cat personality thing.
But I wanted to vent, ya know?
Karen says
Hi Boobooninja,
Yay for harness training! You and Nikita have the tough part down. To be honest Tabs is a wanderer, and I think that helps with the walking part. He’s the type of cat who will keep on going and going if left to his own devices. That was one of the many reasons why we decided to make him an indoor kitty when we moved. I think one thing that might help her feel more comfortable is to go for walks when the neighborhood is quiet. That way she can explore without feeling scared or nervous. Tabs and I go outside at the crack of dawn before the sun comes up, or in the middle of the day when there isn’t too much activity (there’s always workmen around my neighborhood, and that’s when they go to lunch).
There’s always straight up bribery, of course. You could give her leash a long lead and then encourage her to walk to you by holding out her favorite treat.
I want to see Nikita on her leash, by the way!
BooBooNinja says
I post pics of her on my Instagram account (boobooninja)
I think there’s a couple harness photos.
Nikita is also a ninja. She is an escape artist… we keep having to install chicken wire higher and higher on our second floor deck/balcony because she will jump. Last last time, she scaled the chicken wire, “grabbed” the phone/tv cables to put them under her armpits, and flipped herself over and out. Smart kitty. She used the cables so she wouldn’t get scratched by the unfinished, pokey edge of the chicken wire. We thought the latter would be somewhat of a deterrence… but Nikita outsmarted us. Again. “Nikita Ninja Cat, we made you a catio. Why won’t you appreciate our hard work?!!!!”
Karen says
Ooh, smart! She would definitely take the jackpot home in Kitty Jeopardy.
I can tell by her pics that she has a lot of cattitude!
BooBooNinja says
She’s pretty cool.
I can’t believe someone gave her up.
Yay for second hand kitties!
Karen says
Second hand kitties are THE BEST. I can honestly say that Tabs has changed my life. He makes everything better!

wat are you plans?
Amber says
Hi! I hope you’re having a lovely Friday. My question to you would be what foundations and concealers would you recommend for someone with Oily skin and acne to cover up? I’m new to your blog and I don’t know if you’ve answered this before, so sorry if you have.
Karen says
Hi Amber,
Nice to meet you! First of all, totally get where you’re at. I’ve dealt with acne in the past and it’s never an easy thing. My skin used to be super oily too (now it’s combo). Anywho, one of my favorite full coverage foundations is Laura Mercier’s Flawless Fluide. It’s matte, full coverage, handles oil so well (I can even skip powder) and feels light and comfortable on the skin. It comes in 24 shades. It’s expensive at $48, but you barely need any product — just a few drops at the most. Here’s a link to a full review I did a few months ago. The only thing is that it can be tricky to blend; you’ll definitely need a BeautyBlender. Since it’s such an investment I recommend going to the Laura counter or to Sephora to get a sample first to see if you like it.
Concealers — are you looking for an under eye or a face concealer?
Amber says
I will definitely have to try a sample at Sephora. I’m looking for a face concealer. Now you have me curious what’s the difference between an under eye concealer and a face concealer?
Karen says
OK. So, typically, if you want to cover your under eye area, you’ll want to go ever so slightly lighter than the rest of your face. That way you can help brighten up that area (which is an issue I have, for sure!). Under eye concealers also tend to be less dense and more runny so that they don’t look heavy or cakey on the eye area. They’re usually in a tube with a doe foot or a regular ol’ tube. Face concealers tend to be thicker, more dense. In this case, you’ll want to match the color on your face — going lighter would just highlight the areas you want to disguise. They’re typically in pans or pots.
Here’s what I do when I have spots I want to cover up. After I apply foundation, I let it dry down for a bit. Then, I go back in with my concealer and a thin pointed brush to spot conceal the areas that need extra coverage, and then I gently pat around the edges to blend it out.
You could actually use your Laura Mercier Flawless Fluide as a face concealer as well. That’s what I do. I do a layer of the foundation, let it chill, then go back in to do additional spot concealing with a tiny bit of the foundation and a pointed brush. Does this make sense?
Amber says
Oh ok. That makes sense. Thank you for explaining it in a simple way lol. I thought all concealers were the same, boy was I wrong! Another question I had was, is it possible for someone with oily-ish skin to get the dewy makeup look? I’ve seen it around and it looks so refreshed and nice, and I was wondering if it would look as good on someone with oily skin.
Karen says
You’re welcome! You asked a great question. 🙂
So, you can totally do a dewy look, you just have to be very careful about the placement of your highlighter. I would use controlled amounts of it on upper cheekbones, down the bridge of the nose and the cupid’s bow. That way you get the contrast of the highlighter against the matte. I think it helps to use either fingers or small tapered blending brush (like the MAC 224) to apply your highlighter instead of a big fluffy face brush. The smaller brush head will give you more control.
Also, I’d opt for a highlighter with a sheen rather than a shimmer, since shimmers can look oily. Sephora makes a great one that I love called the MicroSmooth Baked Sculpting Contour Trio Is Sublime (here’s a review). It’s comparable to the pricier Ambient Lighting Powders by Hourglass.
Amber says
YAY!
Amber says
YAY!! I will definitely be making a trip to Sephora this weekend and try out those samples. Thank you so much!! I was also wondering if you had any recommendations for a product that will help fade acne scars and discoloration? I used to use Cliniques Dark Spot Corrector but I stopped recently because I felt like it wasn’t working anymore. Anyways I think that’s my last question for you lol
Shannon says
wooooah, beet smoothie??? NOMS. That sounds so delicious! I’m finally getting back in the mood to enjoy smoothies, now that it’s getting a bit warmer. Yay spring in New York 🙂
I have music on my mind… it’s holy week, and I’m in a choir, and we’re singing in all of the services! Last night, tonight, tomorrow, and for Easter. Phew! Super fun, albeit a little tiring. And I’ve been thinking a lot about my own music, too – I’m working on a T-Swift cover/arrangement, which I am WAY more excited about than I thought I would be when I started it, lol! So hopefully I’ll be able to incorporate that into a set soon. 🙂 hehehe.
In makeup news, I have a sephora gift card that’s been sitting in my wallet for like, a month now. Can you even believe it?? I just can’t settle on anything, sigh. Do I go for my weakness/true love, new hair products? Or do I get a new gloss or lipstick? If so, what am I looking for? What about new blush or highlighters? A new brush or two? Or do I just go for practicality, and get the next thing I’ll “need?” (that would be mascara, btw.) Such a dilemma!!
Karen says
Hey Shannon,
The smoothie is SO GOOD. The trick is to use a small or a medium beet — otherwise it takes over the whole smoothie.
Is it warm enough to go outside during the day with just a light jacket yet? I’ve never been to NY in the spring.
Sounds like you’re having a wonderful makeup dilemma. 😀 Since it’s a gift I vote for splurging on something in the “true love” department. Something you’ve wanted to try (maybe a hair mask?) but wouldn’t otherwise. OR a beautiful spring lip shade, because hello, instant gratification. Forget practicality, man.
Shannon says
Haha, best advice!! I knew you’d have a good recommendation 😉
It’s *almost* warm enough here to go out with just a light jacket. It’s like… medium trench-ish weather. I think we’re getting into the rainy season, so it’s definitely carry-an-umbrella-with-you-at-all-times weather 🙂
Karen says
If you need any lip recs let me know, ’cause I got ’em.
One day I’ll make it back to NY! The last time I went was in 2002 (2003?). I was there in the fall and fell in love with the city.
Majick says
One think for sure, if you make it this far east you better look up your new friends in NJ too. LOL
Karen says
I would LOVE that!
majick says
Not kidding. ☺
Shannon says
I am looking for a nice, easy medium/light pink shade with full coverage, that ideally would be forgiving on dry lips… I tend to have trouble finding stuff I like, in a shade that works. It needs to lean towards the warm side of neutral to work with my skin tone, but without getting too coral-y (even tho I luuv me some corals). A lot of the medium pinks I pick up end up looking ashy on me. 🙁 And I want to find one that doesn’t! I’m kinda of leaning towards a lipstick rather than a gloss (don’t mind some glossiness, just don’t want high-shine), and wouldn’t mind matte as long as it’s not super drying.
HA. Hope that’s not too much, lol!
Karen says
Gotcha. I think I have one that’ll be perfect — one of the Hourglass Nude Lip Stylos, either No. 4 or No. 6.
Shannon says
awesome!! I remember reading that post but they didn’t stick in my brain. Will definitely check them out!
Karen says
I hope they work out for you. Hourglass also makes a pink liner that might work for you as well. It’s called Eden! Very smooth and forgiving on dry lips.
Can’t wait to see what you get, yay!
Tiffanie says
Any ideas on what happens to makeup after it has been used and returned? What about the unused makeup that gets discontinued? I’ve always been curious about this!
Karen says
Hi Tiffanie,
I can’t remember where I heard this but someone who worked at a counter once said that once the makeup is returned it’s tossed. I think the reason was that since they can’t control the quality once it leaves the store it can’t be restocked. At least that’s what I remember for years ago…
If anybody else can weigh in on this I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Vesna says
Hi Karen, hope you’re having a wonderful Friday! Mine is almost over (I’m in Stockholm) but it was a good one! Had this amazing healthy lunch, some kind of salad with quinoa, salmon and something else which I wasn’t able to detect (maybe avocado?). Anyway, kept me full all day long. 🙂
I love your smoothie, I often make beet smoothie which is my favorite one, right next to banana smoothie. 🙂 They kinda save me during the evening because thanks to them I don’t eat junk. 😀
Last but not least, I have one question. I love the way you use different text on your photos. Where do you get your inspiration? Or you’re simply creative and you’re a born natural for that? 🙂 Whenever I try to add some text I don’t feel the magic. And I really do like to see other peoples photos with text 😀
Have a nice weekend!
Karen says
Hi Vesna,
Your lunch salad sounds like it was delicious! It’s just about lunchtime on Friday here, and now I’m absolutely starving. 🙂
One of my favorite sources of design inspiration is a site called behance.net. I check the Graphic Design category every day and save things I like into a folder in a photo program I use on my iMac called Aperture, so that I can come back to it often. Instagram itself is also a great source of ideas for text effects and things like that. Coupled with Photoshop and various iPhone apps, including this great one called Phonto, which I highly recommend. It makes it easy to add simple text and color effects to pics.
I hope that helps. Have a great night.
Shannon says
Props for Phonto! It’s pretty dang awesome and easy. 🙂 I didn’t know you used it, Karen! Great minds, etc.
Karen says
It’s so fun, right? And intuitive, too! What do you use it for? Instagram?
Shannon says
Yup, I use it for Instagram or stuff like it. Sometimes for FB events. So much fun to play with!
Vesna says
Thank you for suggestions, that seems really helpful! 🙂
Keep up your good work! 🙂
stephanie says
I just wanted to say that you are amazing and I love reading your blog.
What do you do to find inspiration to steer from the normal nudes? (Eyeshadows, lips, etc.)
Karen says
Thank you Stephanie! 🙂 That’s very kind of you.
Let’s see… I get a lot of inspiration from Instagram. I follow a lot of makeup artists on there who work in fashion and with celebs. If I see a look that I like, I try to find a way to adapt it to make it my own. Are you on Instagram? It’s a great place to fill your visual makeup well. And if you need any recommendations of makeup artists to follow let me know!
stephanie says
Instagram is a really great place for inspiration!!! I would love to know some of your favourites you follow 🙂

Just returned from a children´s birthday party today. What a way to start off the easter weekend!
Can you imagine lots of kids running high on sugar and destroying the furniture? They were about 4 years, and five of them. Makes me question myself how I will keep sane when Little Bean reaches that age…

Sounds like controlled chaos! But still like fun. How old is Little Bean now?

I am at work today and may or may not make it back to the blog but I wanted to wish you, el hub, and Tabs a fabulous weekend.
My husband is going trout fishing tomorrow so I have at least 1/2 a day at home to myself – I’m hoping to purge some old makeup. Please say a prayer for me because I find it difficult to release Anything. LOL

I wish you guys the same! Good luck with the purging! YOU CAN DO IT!

Hello Karen:)
Do you think it’s worth buying a tube of UD’s Perversion? I love how it glides on and makes my lashes look fluttery, thing is Ii get panda bear eyes only a few hours after applying. Help, please!
Karen says
Hi Nicole!
I dig that mascara too, but yeah, it can be tricky sometimes. Have you tried completely removing all of the excess mascara from the brush before you apply? Try that! It might help reduce the panda bear eyes.
Nicole says
Hey Karen,
I usually scrape one side of the brush against the opening of the tube. Should I be using some sort of lint-free Kleenex to do this?
Lauren S. says
Hi Karen! I love your posts so much and also your videos!
TGIF, although my district has no school today and our spring break has just started! Squeeeeeeee!
Also, I would really like to know your opinion on kale chips, as I have been wanting to try them for a while but have never gotten around to it…
Happy Friday!:)
Karen says
Hi Lauren S.,
Yay for spring break! Are you relaxing at home for break? Whatever you’re doing I hope you’re having fun.
So, kale chips. They’re good when they’re made correctly — crispy and yummy and addictive. But for some reason I can’t seem to make them right. Mine end up chewy and kind of gross! They are something I have yet to work out.
Hey gals, does anyone have a really great (and easy) recipe for kale chips for me and Lauren?
Holly says
While I haven’t made this recipe personally, her directions are very detailed & make a lot of sense, cooking-wise, so make sure to read ALL the notes & directions to get the best end result!

I love how the recipe mentions the fact that you need to remove the avocado pit, lol 😀
You remember that post you did a while ago about the Choo Choo Cats from Jetoy, a Korean brand? Well, it’s all your fault, I had to order some stationary with those cats! Somehow, I missed the fact that Jetoy has a US online store, and ordered them from Korea. I got ruined by the shipping cost :/ But I don’t regret ANYTHING. Now I have a notebook with a Choo Choo Mona Lisa and sticky notes with The Cat With A Peal Earring!
On a completely different subject, I was wondering if you had advice for me as an experienced runner. I just started running in the beginning of the year, but I began to get knee pain quickly and it got worse as I tried to train harder or more often. Went to the doctor and she said nothing was damaged, but there’s inflammation in there. She suspects that I’m a heel striker and have weak thigh and hip muscles (which I know is true), so I have exercises to do. I’ve stopped running for 2 weeks now but the pain hasn’t gone away. I’m confused and afraid I won’t be able to go back to my training program. I had just gone past the point when running stops being a chore and becomes exciting, I was starting to see changes in my body and my mood, and I’m so upset that I can’t run 🙁 Have you ever had runner’s knee problems? What did you do?
Karen says
Hey Lulle!
Can you please give me a link to the online store? I need some new stationary and I can see some Jetoy Choo Choo cats in my future. 🙂
OK, running. Sorry to hear about your knee. I have actually have been sidelined a few times due to injuries. It sucks to not be able to run, but I’ve found that the times when I got back to it before fully healing didn’t help me at all. It just made it worse. I wish I could say there was some sort of magic bullet but I’ve learned (the hard way) that for me the best thing to do is let it fully heal and be extra cautious when I get back into it. Build up the mileage slowly. Think of this as a time to cross train. I’m sure you’ve made strides in your cardio fitness, so maybe there’s another sort of low impact exercise you can do? How about taking a spinning class? Those can be just as challenging as running and they burn a ton of calories. Of course clear it with your doctor first.
Lulle says
Thank you for your help Karen! My husband tells me the same thing, that I shouldn’t run again until the pain is gone, it’s so frustrating… Oh well, I’m icing and popping Advil, hopefully it will get better soon. I signed up for my first race (5K) for the end of May and now I’m really worried I won’t be ready, or even won’t be able to run it. I’m crossing all fingers and toes to recover soon. I’m also gonna buy better running shoes this week-end.
For the Choo Choo cats in the US, it’s happening here: http://jetoyusa.com/ The stuff I bought (notebooks, sticky notes, file holders) is not only ridiculously cute, it’s also great quality. Gmarket.com from Korea has more products but I paid more in shipping than in goods so I wouldn’t recommend it, unless you really can’t live without something specific.
Stephanie says
I was going to suggest shoes, but I see you are already going to do that. I recommend getting properly fitted. I did not when I first started running, I bought a pair that felt good in the store. There’s so much more to it than that, I ended up with a really bad case of plantar fasciitis. Usually smaller, specialty stores have someone who can fit you. I over-pronate and I’m a heel striker and once I got fitted properly it made running so much easier. It’s hard to believe the right shoes make such a difference, but they do.
Lulle says
Thank you so much for your help Stephanie!
There’s a small running store in my neighborhood with great reviews on yelp, and they do gait analysis. That’s where I’m planning to go!
For now though I’m trying to get rid of the inflammatory pain, I haven’t run – or even walked outside the house – in a week and it’s still painful 🙁
varsha says
Hi Karen! thats one good looking smoothie 🙂 but the coconut water is so expensive around here and that makes the smoothie a pricey one too lol 😀 ..I make a mean green smoothie these days..TJ (Bless ’em)carries these mixed green bags which has baby kale, baby chard and baby spinach..They are all tender since young and with just a lil bit of banana and carrot juice(or even water) ,they make a great smooth smoothie, true to the name 🙂
Did you know there is a sale going on in Jcrew factory online?I just ordered a pretty dress yay! 🙂

Hi Varsha,
You can substitute the coconut water for plain water! 🙂 It still tastes great.
I didn’t know about the sale. What does your dress look like?

I spent a couple hours this morning working on a menu for a baby shower next month. It’s a little tricky because the mother-to-be is vegetarian & her sister who is the hostess can’t eat gluten, eggs, or cow’s milk. Anyhow, I’m starting to second-guess my selections at this time, so I’m glad to take a break & see what’s going on over here! And I’ll take any ideas/suggestions for appetizers…
