Garlic fries: my rationale for eating them includes the fact that they are made of vegetables; therefore, eating a large pile of garlic fries is practically the same thing as eating a salad. Also, since I like to smother mine with ketchup (aka “tomatoes”), it’s like I’m topping them with extra vegetables, so I’m being extra healthy. 🙂
OK, I know, this is completely insane logic, but let me have my thing. I think garlic fries should be a bonafide food group.
In case you were wondering…those garlic fries up above were not my breakfast (although I have totally done that)! I took this pic at the ballpark on Wednesday at the Giants game with my friend Marisol.
I barely know anything at all about baseball, so I’m not a hardcore fan like Marisol is, but I still like going to the games because, I mean, the food (obviously), and hanging out with a friend.
And it’s fun to people watch and be outside.
So, here’s an SF Giants fun fact: when a hometown player is up to bat, they have their own theme music! Yeah, they pick out a song before the season starts, I guess, and whenever they’re up to bat, it blasts over the stadium speakers.
This, of course, got me thinking about my own “up-to-bat” song… I’m 95% sure that it would be Cheryl Lynn’s Got To Be Real.
OK, enough rambling. Let’s get on with today’s open thread. 🙂
Whatever you feel like chatting about — makeup, blogging, photography, cats, food, fashion (don’t get me started on my new favorite store, LOFT), shoes or whatever. Or, maybe you’d just like to tell me about your cats in great detail. That would be very cool too. Whatever you’re in the mood for.
See you soon in the comments!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. TGIF!
Agata says
Hi Karen,
Garlic fries sound good. I am not a baseball fan but I don’t mind going to a game once a season just for the experience 🙂
Have you seen Loft is having a 40% F&F sale? Also, have you picked up anything during the Sephora sale yet?
Have a lovely day and weekend.
Karen says
Hi Agata,
I’m not a huge fan either but I still enjoy going to games! I understand enough to follow along plus it’s fun to hang out. Have you ever watched any live games?
I didn’t know that LOFT was having a F&F sale! Thanks for the heads up, I need some shorts.
As for the Sephora sale I haven’t picked anything up yet, believe it or not. I stocked up during the last one so I have a lot of my basics/backups ready to go. I will probably end up getting a Brow Wiz pencil just for the heck of it though, and maybe another BeautyBlender. You can never have enough of those two.
What are you up to this weekend?
Agata says
Sometimes I am forced to watch games because my husband is somewhat interested in baseball!
I haven’t picked up anything from Sephora yet either and I can’t decide what to get…Maybe some new skincare…
I don’t really have any plans for this weekend. What about you?
Karen says
I loooove skin care. It feels like a fresh start. How about a mask? They’re like instant gratification.
This weekend I’m sticking close to home. The last few have been very busy so I’m looking forward to sleeping in. I’ve got to start the deck garden so we’re getting plants at Home Depot tomorrow. Tomatoes, peppers, and perhaps a basil plant (I love fresh basil). Ugh, I also have to clean the house! I’m really not looking forward to that but it must be done.
Petra says
Omg garlic fries!!! I need to try that! Garlic = awesome + fries= awesome it must add up to awesomess squared!
I have had a sickday so comfort food is a bit of a must
I went to loft when I was in nyc last year and I so miss that store here in sweden.
Karen says
Happy Friday Petra!
Garlic fries = awesome to infinity. 🙂 Do you eat yours with ketchup?
Sorry to hear you’re not feeling well. I hope you get better soon!
Petra says
I think i would prefer them plain. Not a big fan of ketchup actually.
Thank you, i just need to rest up.
Give Tabs a kiss
Karen says
Plain is always good! Keeps the garlic flavor extra garlicy.
I’ll give him a big hug and kiss for you. He’s been a little needy these days, so I’m sure he’ll appreciate it.
Will you be hanging at home this weekend? Or do you have any plans?
Petra says
I am going to a fiftieth b-day party tomorrow. A friend of the family. Otherwise I am planning to just rest as much as I can.
We all need a little extra love every once in a while – even a superstar like Tabs <3
Karen says
Oh how fun! Where’s the party being held?
Get lots of sleep this weekend. I find that sleep and tons of water is what really helps me when I’m not feeling great.
Tabs is a superstar! A superstar micro-manager, LOL! He’s constantly keeping me on my toes. Here, I’ll give him a belly rub for ya.
Joyce says
Hi Karen!
Your picture drew me in so fast. I love garlic fries. Or any fries for that matter. 🙂 Im scheduling a dodger game date with my husband just so I can get the garlic fries there as well. Lol. And lastly, I love that song. I have to admit it’s one of my go to’s for my cleaning the house playlist. It just gets me energized!
Karen says
Hi Joyce!
How fun. 🙂 Are you a baseball fan? I hope you guys have fun when you go to the game. I also hope you eat a second helping of fries so I can live through you, haha!
Have you ever had sweet potato fries? They’re so good. I make them at home sometimes.
Joyce says
I’m not really a fan, but I admit going to a game is a lot better than watching it on tv. Its a fun environment and being outdoors is nice. My husband also usually points out some of the traditions and other tid bits throughout that makes it more interesting to me.
I have had sweet potato fries, they’re delicious as well. Do you bake yours in the oven?
Karen says
I’m the same way! I usually go with friends who know what’s going on. My friend Marisol is a die hard Giants fan! She knows all the players and tells me who to root for, LOL!
As for sweet potato fries, yup, I make mine in the oven. Do you have a go-to recipe?
denise S says
The Garlic fries look delicious! I’m like you I only go to sports games for the food and company, I really don’t have much interest in sports. I’m trying to decide what to buy with my Sephora VIB discount. I have enough makeup, sure, lol. I’m getting Clarisonic brush head refills ,a couple of MUA eyeshadows, Guerlain 4 season bronzer and maybe Clinique cheek pop.
Karen says
Hi Denise,
Ahh, decisions, decisions. I hope you like that bronzer! I’ve worn it before and it’s so pretty. I think Guerlain does some of the best bronzers in beauty!
What else will you be doing this weekend besides hitting up the VIB sale?
Happy Friday!
Kara says
The picture of garlic fries just look so delicious. I always add an order of them at Yard House. Thinking of hitting up the VIB sale this weekend, was feeling a little guilty about the goodies I got at imats last weekend but how could I miss out on a Sephora discount right?!? lol
Karen says
Hi Kara,
How fun! What did you grab at IMATS?
Joan B. in S. C. says
Yes, this would be considered a vegetable dish, and now I want a large order. Whenever I hear someone going to a sporting event with food being a main attraction, I think of the time Homer Simpson took the family to a WNBA game. He simply said, “Nachos is nachos.”
Karen says
LOL, Joan! I actually came this close to getting nachos too. Extra cheese, please!
What are you up to this weekend? Got any fun plans?
Joan B. in S. C. says
We’re getting thunderstorms this weekend, so I’ll be inside. I just made some shoe purchases from Nordstroms and got some tops from J. Peterman, so it’s finally time to clear out those closets and move out the sweaters.
Karen says
You said the magic word — shoes! Which ones did you get?
Oh great, now I want to go shoe shopping. 🙂
Tatiana says
Last time my brother and sister-in-law were in town and we went to a Giants game, we shared 3 orders of garlic fries. I’d like to say that my brother ate the majority of them. 😉
Barry Bonds was still hitting them into the cove at that time. Yes, I guess it’s been a while since I’ve been to a game.
I think I’m still trying to lose the weight from those fries.
Have a fun weekend!
Karen says
How fun, Tatiana! I hope you were there on a sunny day. We went to a night game, which is cool, too. It gets cold though. But that’s just an excuse to grab a hot chocolate, right?!
You have a fun weekend, too. What are your plans?
Tatiana says
It was the middle of the summer and a night game. We wore winter jackets. Not nearly as bad as a Niners game at Candlestick.
Karen says
LOL! Yeah, we were all bundled up at the game too. I was fine until the fog started rolling in. That’s when it got really cold. Seriously thank goodness for hot, sweet beverages!
Leah G. says
Those fries look amazing!
I also love LOFT. Their dresses are great. I also recently got their shorts (and they are long enough to not have anything hanging out!) 🙂
Have a great weekend! It’s a 3 day weekend here–woo Marathon Monday in Boston is also a state holiday. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Leah G!
I don’t know why it’s taken me this long to figure out that LOFT is the bomb.com. Seriously! Which shorts did you get? I got a pair of these cute scalloped lace shorts. I like them so much I want another pair in a different color!
Leah G. says
Hi Karen!
LOFT outlet is also very good. So the shorts I got are a green color (think military green but a little lighter). If rolled down they are just over the knee. So typically you would wear them rolled up.
I’m tempted to wear them for my summer out early days from work (we get out early on Fridays). I can’t ever wear shorts to work but with these being longer I’m so tempted! 🙂
Karen says
What?! There’s a LOFT outlet? I learn something new every day! 😀
I vote for wearing the shorts! Keep them long for the day and then roll ’em up when it’s time to play.
Raychelle says
Hi Karen!
I LOVE your definition of “vegetables”! Ha, i’m sooooo with you. Now I won’t feel so guilty when indulging in garlic fries myself 😉 it’s one of may faves.
Do you have any recommendations for any goodies at Sephora? I’m putting together my list. Have a fabulous weekend!
Karen says
Hi Raychelle,
Garlic fries are practically two steps away from a green smoothie! At least that’s what I keep telling myself, haha!
OK, Sephora goodies. What’s on your list so far? And is there anything in particular you’re interested in (like primers, lipsticks, eyeshadows, etc.)? If you can give me an idea of what you’re interested in I can give you a list…
Lulle says
Hey Karen!
Let’s face it: garlic makes everything better. Except your breath… I think I put garlic and onion in everything I cook. A loooong time ago, I had this boyfriend (my very first boyfriend in fact) who didn’t like onion and garlic and couldn’t stand even the smallest amount in his food. I realized that it was a deal-breaker for me, I couldn’t spend my life with that guy BECAUSE OF GARLIC.
Karen says
OHMYGAWD. No seriously, it never even occurred to me that one could date somebody who hated garlic. I mean, what the heck? Everything would taste like cardboard.
You know what my favorite thing is? ROASTED GARLIC. Holy crap…
Kiss & Make-up says
I come from the Land of Fries (Belgium. Those naughty Frenchies STOLE our national dish and called it ‘French fries’ but it’s all LIES) but I never had garlic fries! Sound yummy though. And yes, ketchup ftw. Most Belgians have their fries with mayo, but I always put on ketchup.
Leah G. says
I once sat next to two guys in a bar in NYC from Belgium. Most of the time we talked about fries. They were *not* impressed with American fries that’s for sure! 🙂
Kiss & Make-up says
Haha, yeah, that’s one of the few things we can brag about together with beer and chocolate: our fries! Other than that we don’t have much to be proud of, lol. Seriously though, no other country has fries that taste like real Belgian fries.
Karen says
I just started eating them with mayo recently (seriously, like in the last month) and like them. Ketchup will always be my fave though!
Syah says
have you tried garlic salt fries, Karen? I visited my sister in Canberra, Australia and she introduced me to garlic salt fries….mind blown. xo
Karen says
I haven’t! Is it salt with garlic flavoring? Or really salty garlic fries?
Syah says
Yes, it’s salt with garlic flavoring. yummy 🙂 i think they sell garlic salt at trader joes if you wanna check that out.
Kwmechelle says
GARLIC FRIES!!!! I like garlic with anything. I like fries with ketchup. The three together make my heart stop. Soooo yummy. So, Sephora sale. Last week I bought the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Blushed Cooper. I’m in love. We definitely were made for each other. Can’t rave about it enough. I also bought the benefit they’re real mascara (HG for me) and went to three stores before I found the NARS concealer in Amande. Yeah, #makeupAddictProblems. I’ll prolly go there again tomorrow to get the Sephora makeup clutch because, you know, #makeupAddictProblems. Currently enjoying a road trip along the east coast to see family & friends that I haven’t seen in a while. Enjoying it bunches thus far. Have you worn Blushed Copper? I read your review on it. Eager to know if you still take it for a spin?
Karen says
I love the Shimmering Skin Perfectors! They are so beautiful and look amazing on the skin. I haven’t tried Blushed Copper yet, though. How are you using it? As a highlighter? Try it in the inner corners of your eyes and underneath the brow bone. I bet it would look amazing! I do that with my Becca Shimmering Skin Perfectors and it makes me look so awake.
Kwmechelle says
A bit of both, actually. I use it as a blush atop the blush I’m wearing. I put on bronzer first, then blush, & I use the SP as a highlight. Or as just a stand alone blush. I’ve even heard some girls using it as an e/s. I dunno about the e/s idea. Seems too pretty to use that way. But I’ll def try using it on the inner tear ducts. =)
Karen says
Yes! I lightly buff mine in with a tapered eye brush. It adds a beautiful spotlight in the area without any obvious shimmer.
How’s the traveling going? Are you driving today or staying put for a while?
Stacey says
Could definitely go for some garlic fries right now. Garlic is probably one of my all time favorite things. Occasionally I’ll make this garlic sandwich that I learned about from watching the old TV show Dragnet. You take 2 slices of pumpernickel bread and you put peanut butter on one slice and cream cheese on the other. Then you put some minced garlic on the cream cheese slice. Put the two together and enjoy. It may sound like a weird combo but the different flavors go really well with each other.
Karen says
OK that sandwich made my tummy turn a little bit but I can see how the savory and sweet play well with each other. I kind of love that you tried a sandwich idea from a show! 😀
Do you ever eat roasted garlic? It’s my favorite.
Stacey says
Food is one aspect of life where I consider myself to be pretty adventurous. Also definitely love roast garlic. Last time I roasted garlic I used some to make garlic butter which was quite tasty.
Karen says
I’m pretty adventurous when it comes to trying new things too, although unconventional flavor combinations take me a while. What made you decide to try that sandwich? Was it a spur of the moment thing?
Stacey says
It was one of those things that sounded so crazy I knew I had to try it. Even before I tasted it I had a feeling it was going to be one of those it sounds weird but tastes great food combos.
Joan B. in S. C. says
Stacey, I never thought anyone ate the things Bill Gannon talked about, but I stand corrected. Now I’m interested in trying the sandwich, too!
A says
I love fries, so those look AMAZING!!! I cannot wait to go to Sephora and use my discount lol I wanted to try a sample of the new Cover FX cover drops. Have you tried them? Thoughts??
Karen says
Hi A,
I haven’t tried them yet but I’ve heard good things.
Gals, has anybody here tried the new Cover FX drops? Spill the details!
Kalli says
Hi Karen!
I’m so ready for this weekend to be over! Although I’ve got a few work things to do tomorrow 🙁
Anyway, I’m going to a big, fat Greek wedding next weekend in Houston and I think this weekend I’m going to do a test-run of my makeup. I’ve got my dress & shoes but I haven’t figured out my makeup yet! Pink lipstick fo sho. I’m thinking MAC Viva Glam Miley, because I’ve been loving it lately and probably a cat-eye too, but I’m not happy with any of my black liners I currently own. I just got paid, so I may stop by MAC and pick up some Blacktrack since I have the best luck with gel and I’ve never tried the Fluidlines.
I hope you have a good weekend, Karen!
Kalli
Karen says
Hi Kalli,
Backtrack Fluidline is great. A must-have staple. How are you with liquid liner? You could also do a cat eye with a shiny finish! That might be cool!
Kalli says
I’m ok with liquid liner. I really like UD’s 24/7 version which I actually own, but I think my tube has seen better days. I also have MUFE’s but the marker tip drags on my lids and I can’t get an even line to save my life. I also have L’Oreal Lineur Intense but I find that it rubs off kind of easy. I do love Nars eye paints! I have one in Baalbek, which is like a black with gold flecks. That works the best for me and I use Real Techniques silicon liner brush which is so cool!
Megan says
Those fries look delicious! I love idea of considering them veggies topped with more veggies:)
I don’t know if you have a Nordstrom Rack by you, but the one by me had an awesome Smashbox primer set. For $ 18.97 you get a full-size Photo Finish Foundation Primer and a full-size Photo Finish Hydrating Under Eye Primer. I’m not a huge fan of the foundation primer, but seeing the duo was less than the eye primer retails for I couldn’t resist!
Karen says
Hi Megan,
What a great deal! I wish I lived by a Nordstrom Rack (seriously, I’d be there every day). This is great info for the girls who live near one though, so thank you for sharing it. Yay for good deals.
Did you grab anything else during your shopping trip?
Happy Friday, by the way!
Megan says
Bummer there isn’t one by you. I love that store! I try not to go in too often though because I always end up buying something.
I also bought a couple of shirts and a necklace from The Limited. I hadn’t been in one in a long time and I forgot how much I like their clothes.
Happy Friday to you too! Hope you have a good weekend!
Karen says
I haven’t shopped at The Limited in ages. Kind of funny — I used to work for them back when I was in college!
I hope you have a great weekend, too. What do you have lined up? The past few weekends were super busy so I plan to lay low and do home stuff. I have to get the deck garden going and need to do some much-needed house cleaning.
Allison C says
I want those garlic fries! Yum. I actually am a rabid baseball fan. I’m from Boston probably the most sports-obsessed city in the country. In fact, we got Panda from the Giants and though he’s hit plenty of singles, we’re waiting for the home runs to start. I hope you have a fun time even if you don’t love the game (plus it is a long sit). What did you pick up during the Sephora event? I managed to get a quickie makeover from one of the MUAs while I was there. I picked up the NARS Weightless Foundation and the CoverFX Drops as well as Lancome Visionnaire Primer so it was a foundation-heavy haul plus a tube of DiorShow
Karen says
Hi Allison,
I haven’t picked up anything from the Sephora sale (I KNOW). I really stocked up the last time I was there so I don’t really need any essentials right now. I still might grab a mascara (we’ll see).
How are you liking the Cover FX drops?
Marina (Makeup4all) says
Garlic fries sound SO good, I can’t even. I am so having them soon.
Karen says
I love them! They’re one of my favorite things to eat.
What’s the plan for the weekend, Marina?
LindaLibraLoca says
I had the best Garlic Fries ever at New Zealand (Queenstown) at a place called “Devils Burger”. It was pouring outside (yay for New Zealand summer!) and we were soaked, so I figured that would be right the comfort food I needed.
Karen says
How were the burgers at that place? Hopefully as good as the fries!
Erin says
I haven’t had regular fries in maybe a year! I got spoiled when living in Portland on Burgerville fries and I just can’t eat them elsewhere!
OH try the friend at Bouchon next time you are in Yountville. THEY ARE SO GOOD!
Karen says
I’ve had the fries at Bouchon before. Very good! Have you had the macarons? I live for them.
tirurit says
My favourite has to be “patatas a lo pobre”!
Cut your potatoes in round not very thick lamines, cut your green peppers in strips and mash the garlic cloves with the side of a knife so they don’t explode while frying. Put everything inside a pan with hot olive oil (healthier and it gives them a different kind of flavour). Ta dah! Very taste and the perfect side dish to both fish and meat!
Karen says
Hi Tirurit,
OK, this sounds delicious! I think I’m going to make this soon because I have some potatoes that need to be eaten. What spices do you use? Just salt and pepper?
tirurit says
Yep, just salt and pepper!
Bon appetit!
Rhia says
Garlic fries are a staple food for me when I go to baseball games. I’m right there with you on the ketchup thing. Have you tried poutine? That’s darn good too. There’s a food truck here in the Bay Area that serves different versions of it. http://smotheredinsauce.com/
Jennifer says
Okay, the garlic fries look great but I have a blogging question for you.
I don’t know how long I’ve been subscribing here, maybe a year? But it seems like you’re branching out a lot more into writing about things other than makeup and beauty products. Or am I just imagining that?
Does Hubs help shoot you? (with a camera)
Karen says
Hi Jennifer,
About branching out in blogging, not really. I just go through phases. It’s been eight years now, and I’ve never just talked about makeup and beauty. Sometimes it’s been vampires, Christian Bale, science fiction, fashion, food. I dunno… All kinds of stuff.
I wish El Hub was able to help me with photography, but no, not for my regular posts. When we’re out and about, though, and I’m in front of the camera on a trip or something, he’ll almost always be the one taking my picture.
For my regular posts, I’ve gotten pretty good at using different remote controls. Most of the time when you just see my upper body, I’m either holding a remote control down by my waist and triggering the camera shutter, or I’m using the timer. 🙂
Jennifer says
I’m impressed. It doesn’t look like you’re shooting yourself at all.
Of course, I’m sure Tabs assists when his schedule allows…
Karen says
Haha! Well, he’s great for moral support. 🙂 I still haven’t figured out how to get him to push the shutter button, although wouldn’t that be great?
Naw, he’s too much of a diva for that. He only likes to be in front of the camera.
Jennifer says
And probably the less knowledge he has about how things work, the better.
I’m thinking of that 2001 movie Cats and Dogs. If you haven’t seen it you must!
Carina says
Well now, I really want some garlic fries.
Jen C says
Garlic fries!! Major yums… On a separate note, Karen, please may I ask for a lipstick recommendation? I’m looking for a pigmented nude lipstick that doesn’t wash me out (I’ve red pigmented lips and about NC25), preferably on the beigy brown side. Thanks so much in advance!!
NATALIE says
I love your choice of “up-to-bat” song. LOL.. I think mine would be “Let’s Go Crazy” by Prince. Love the purple one.
