Matte lips in summer: a do or a don’t?
For me, they’re an ALL-CAPS DO! — but if you’d asked me a couple years ago, I probably would have said “don’t,” because I’m also a sucker for the classics, which for summer usually means glossy lips, dewy skin, and — gah! ALL OF THE BRIGHTS!
My heart swells with makeup joy when I think about it…
But now with so many matte lipsticks on the lip scene, I can’t help myself. I love the way they look in person and in pics, especially when a brand gives the matte treatment to classic summer colors like coral.
As far as I’m concerned, summery matte lips are trending up, but I’m more likely to wear a matte lip in a traditional summery color, like a bright red or a poppy, or coral, hot pink or fuchsia than a darker, deeper berry, plum or wine. I’ll save those darker shades for fall.
What do you think about wearing matte lips in summer? Are they a do or a don’t for you?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. Goooood morning! The sun is out, the birds are singing, and I’ve got kitten videos on repeat right now.
I found a treasure trove of kitty videos on the foster_kittens instagram page, and I may or may not have just spent the past 10 minutes watching little tabby kitties yawn, stretch and play. 🙂
The gal who runs the page fosters kittens and soon-to-be mommy cats, and then posts pics and videos of the kitties as they grow up and go out for adoption.
IT IS SO CUTE! I can’t even take it…
The current mama cat in residence is Maggie, a half-Siamese beauty who just gave birth to four adorable kittens, also known as “The Maglets.”
Start with this video of two of The Maglets being scared by a finger (see how the one on the left shakes?). Don’t be surprised if you immediately melt into a warm pile of lovey-dovey goo.

I say yes- I agree with you, it’s a trend at the moment and with so many brands releasing matte lipsticks with great finish and bright summery colors- why not? Especially since in the summer my lips are actually more hydrated and less dry than in the winter!
Every time you post a picture of you wearing Toxic Tonic, I want it so bad! Lol
Vanessa C says
I love me a matte lip, especially in all the fun colors all these brands are popping out lately! I’m def loving your color today 🙂
PS… Stop it, you just made me melt with those kittens!!! LOL I’m allergic to cats (insert crowd gasps and awws), but obsessed with them because of Instagram. Instant follow lol

i feel bad for you and your allergies. i have my little cat for 3 years and he is like my best friend.

A DO! I’m so happy more matte colors are coming out now. I agree with you that summer matte colors are good for…well, the summer!
Kiss & Make-up says
Color is more important than finish for me, so sure, matte is fine for me in summer!
And awwwww, looks at the cute kittie cats!!! <3

I’ve actually been wearing darker colours lately – listening to a lot of occult/pagan rock and getting into the whole witchy feeling again. I do want to try wearing MAC’s “Relentlessly Red”, though, one of my favourite female metal singers (Simone Simons) recently posted a photo on Instagram of herself wearing it and it looked stunning!
Tiffany Kelly says
Ahhhh I want. That lippy looks amazing on you! 🙂
ericca says
Only in for the summer.shpppsh! (i guess thats how you write that sound) Its for all year long. There is no season that you can put matte lips in. No, the colors yes, the finish. NO!
Carrie says
Looks great on you, but a no for me. It’s too hot and I’m too on the go for the look. I stick with things like YSL glossy stains, sheer lipsticks, ets.
Nicole - Beyond the Pale and Freckled says
I think matte is even better in the summer since you’re not fighting the super dry air of winter which somehow makes my lips even flakier than thought possible. Plus it makes those bright colors easier to wear/maintain since they’re less likely to slide around your face. A sweaty mcsweatypants such as myself is likely to smear that glossy bright pink lipstick all over my face while trying to delicately dab away some upper lip sweat. Sexy, I know!
Amoure Jones says
Definitely a do for me as well. In the past I would have cringed at the thought of wearing a matte lip during the warm Summery months , but makeup has come a long way since then. With all of the fun, bright and vibrant shades in matte lippies you can’t dare say no. Plus it’s my absolute favorite finish – now.
Lulle says
I think they’re a do! In fact they can balance a glowy summer face nicely to avoid the full shine disco-ball effect.
Iris says
Matte lips in the summer are definitely a “yes” for me.
Jessica says
As long as the matte lipstick isn’t DRY.
Oh, dry lipstick is horrid.
Kwmechelle says
TOTAL do! In fact, I think they’re appropriate year round. Although, to be honest, I just started wearing matte lips a few months ago. I didn’t think my dry lips could handle the formula. But after taking the plunge, I get the appeal of them. And I’ll be rocking ’em all year long. Now off to watch cute kittie goodness =)

DO DO DO DO DO (I’m singin”!) LOL Love a bright matte lip in the summer. I agree with Nicole that it stays put a lot better in the heat.
Off Topic: CHECK YOUR EMAIL – I sent you a discount code for NU Evolution natural makeup. it would come from my work email (I don’t want to post it here). It’s only good until July 2.
IF you didn’t receive it, maybe PM me on FB?
I wasn’t sure if you would get it if I responded to one of your emails. (hope that makes sense LOL)

I say “yes.” I don’t really believe in makeup rules, so I think you can wear whatever, whenever. Mattes are certainly in style this summer.
Kalli says
Eh, mattes are ok sometimes but I prefer a creme finish on my lipsticks. I like a little bit of sheen and I find them more comfortable to wear. If I’m going to be out and about on a hot, sticky day I would probably wear a lip stain in lieu of a matte, that way I could just top with lip balm and be on my way! Although I have to admit I do love a dark, rich matte in fall/winter!
auxiliary beauty says
I love mattes for summer because they stand up to the fiendish humidity where I live! Sheer, glossy shades look pretty, but they melt off so quickly…
Also, Tropic Tonic looks absolutely perfect on you.
LindaLibraLoca says
Absolutely do. It is more about the color than the finish for me.
Vanessa says
DO
Funny, I actually associate mattes with summer because gloss and creams emphasizes my damp sweaty face.
For a similar reason, I don’t tend to go for red or coral because it brings out my hot, rudy face! Haha
Purple, pink… Others are ok 🙂

My favorites are the kitten cam, which is a livestream: http://livestream.com/FosterKittenCam/TheDahlKittens and also The Secret Life of Dog Catchers on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSecretLifeOfDogCatchers who is a Nor Cal animal control officer who does fostering too. She just fostered the most adorable litter of pitbull puppies.
And I love mattes ALL THE TIME, gimme gimme gimme!
Vijaya says
I’m not a huge ‘seasonal’ makeup person. If it looks good in winter, chances are it looks good in summer too, no?
Stacey says
I tend to stay away from mattes only because I always have really dry lips. As to whether or not mattes are a good choice for summer, I think it’s all a matter of personal preference.
Holly says
I had coffee with a friend today & I went for a matte lip because it’s SO HOT up here in the Seattle area. I prepped my lips first–exfoliated & moisturized–before applying NYX’s Soft Matte Lip Cream in Milan & then I lightly dusted them with Dermablend’s Professional Setting Powder. The color lasted 6 hours, including eating & drinking, plus it as one feature on my face that wasn’t “glowing” from the heat.
Chelsea says
You might get me to actually get an Instagram account for the kitties.
I am usually too lazy to do lip color, but I have a personal thing against shiny lips, so I am all about this! Now if only I could find a sheer stain I like that lasts… Maybe just sheering down a matte long wear product?
Stephanie says
I’ve been obsessed with matte lipsticks lately, so YES!
We’ve had foster kittens that little before. They are SO cute but SO much work. The best part is watching their little personalities develop and watching them learn.
Reyna says
Matte Lips should be worn at least twice a week, regardless of the season! Who doesn’t love a matte lip especially one that looks amazing just like that one!
Fancie says
Definitely a do! Summer is all about bright fun colors which I think look better in a matte finish. I’m super excited about all these new matte lines coming out right now
Michou says
ABSOLUTELY yes to matte lips in the summer. MATTE LIPS ALL YEAR! 😀
But on a slightly more serious note, I’m in LOVE with how matte shades look when insanely bright (or even neon). They go on more evenly and look that much more vibrant.
Do you have any recommendations for moisturizing matte shades for summer (the only colors I lean far away from are pale shades).
Neha says
I love matte lipsticks, they have great color and better longetivity.
Kim says
You know what I love about matte lips in the summer? You automatically look cooler. I mean temperature wise. It’s like everything can be melting around you Dali-style but, somehow, the matte lip makes you look unfazed. But, honestly, summer is about the only time I can get away with glittery gloss, so I have to take advantage of that on a daily basis. Matte can wait for fall for me. 🙂
