I was de-cluttering the books in my bedroom last weekend (KON MARI 4 LIFE) and found my old copy of Kevyn Aucoin’s Face Forward, which I’ve had for eons.
Look what fell out when I opened it up!
Well…other than the random Valentine’s Day stickers.
It’s an ad I tore out of an issue of In Style magazine in THE YEAR 2000 because I liked the makeup.
And I know it’s from 2000 because when I flipped it over…
Crazy to think that this look was from a print ad 17 years ago, because it still totally holds up today. That brown lip is definitely back in style again.
And the brows. The brows! It’s interesting to me that the artist decided to keep them relatively thick, because even in the the 2000s, the over-plucked, thin brow craze of the mid- and late-’90s was still going strong. This thicker, natural brow is current.
I think there’s something to be said for classic, timeless makeup looks like this one, because even 20 years later, you could still totally wear this same look, and it would be completely relevant. I think I’m gonna try it this weekend.
And, oh…I’m not a hoarder or anything, HAHA!

Karen

I love the brown lips and I have naturally really full brows but sometimes I like to brush them just so and it totally makes them thinner and it gives a really nice touch to the brown lipstick/dewy summer look!! I love the way it turns out with a bold brown lip and less prominent brows and minimal eye makeup also!!! 🙂 Love your post.

I kept some old magazines for this reason. Kevyn Aucoin used to have a column in Allure magazine, and I loved it.

Cool, I would love to know what makeup you will use to create this look…if you do. I am loving some of the 90’s trends. I just fixed my old chocker necklace from the era so I can rock it again!

I love that book. Timeless looks. Best advice on makeup basics.

I still have an old book from that time as well, focusing on “beauty” more than on makeup, but I do recognize quite a lot of the tips they gave back then makeup wise now coming back. Which in some cases I don’t mind at all, see the brown lip.

Will definitely be copying that eye look… Neutral shimmer never goes out of style!

This is such a classic look. I used to save things like this all the time from magazines.

I was definitely in my Bobbi Brown makeup. I had a copy of her first book. In November of 2000 I was in my fifth month of my pregnancy. What a time.

I was having a clear out recently and I came across a makeup tutorial video (yes, an actual VHS tape!) by Christian Dior that I received as a gift with purchase from them about 20 years ago. My VHS player is packed away in the loft but I sooo want to watch that tape, will be so nostalgic!

I don’t hate brown lips on the right person, I’m not saying she looks bad, but I’ve had used something rosier. Monochromatic had its moment in the late 90’s early 2k’s. The brows are really great though. Feathery and natural but shaped.
