Do I ever wear makeup on vacation?
Oh, totally, I do. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever not brought makeup with me on vacation, but what I end up wearing depends on what I’ll be doing, of course. Like, if it’s a beach trip, I’ll usually just fill in my brows and curl my lashes and go on about my high-intensity relaxing, but if I’ll be walking around someplace, shopping and sightseeing, then I’ll usually do some kind of modified version of a regular non-vacation everyday look.
And by “modified,” I mean that I’ll see how much I can get away with before El Hub starts getting antsy. 😉
Oh, about the makeup I’m wearing above, that’s pretty much what I wore every day of my trip to New Orleans — a little cat eye flick, a bit of bronzer, blush and a bright lip.
Believe or not, it stayed put through the NOLA rain and ridiculous humidity. If you’re interested in hearing more about that and the look I’m wearing up top, let me know!
Do you usually wear makeup when you go on vacation, and if you do, do you ever go all out?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. Happy Tuesday. 🙂

Please let me know what you are wearing I need heatproof and humidity proof makeup suggestions for my upcoming vacation.
Allison C says
You look fabulous, as always, in spite of the oppressive humidity of NOLA! And the hat is too cute. I do wear makeup on vacay. And same thing, Jeff gets antsy if I’m taking too long but once I’m ready, he somehow always comes up with last minute things he needs to do 😉
Karen says
Thanks, Allison! The humidity was oppressive. Thank goodness for setting spray, LOL!
What makeup do you usually bring on vacay? Do you take a lot with you, or do you just bring the essentials?
Ashleigh says
Yes, even in my volunteer and research work in Africa I wore mascara, and a ton of sunscreen, some light powder and not much else. I think I did bring a little blush and liner for nights out though. Normal vacations I try to bring one makeup bag full of essentials, though that is always a struggle to narrow it down! I also try to hoard fragrance samples so I can travel with those instead of bringing fragile rollerballs. My travel bag favorite is the Too Faced Champagne shadow primer. It works as a cream shadow, primer, or highlighter. It’s so low-maintenance but makes me feel more alive and put together.
Rhia says
When I was in NOLA, I kept my face nearly makeup free. I mainly wore my BB cream with SPF, mascara, and gloss during the day. I added shadow, liner, and blush at night when it wasn’t as muggy. I try not to make it too complicated because I tend to get lazy spending that much time on my face, especially after a long day full of activities. That’s just me though. 😛
denise says
I usually take the “complete face” worth of makeup but often don’t end up using everything. I do my best to choose just a few shadows or a small palette that will give me a few options for eyes. And I usually only take one blush, sometimes two.
When I do vacation makeup, especially in the summer, the thing I’m most likely to skip is foundation. I can get away with concealer and a light finishing powder. And I often do a one-color eye look with liner and mascara to save time. But I always do brows, mascara, blush, and lip gloss or I just feel undone.
Glad you loved NOLA. It’s one of my favorite towns!
Jenny says
You look gorgeous in that photo! What lipstick are you wearing?
My favourite ‘holiday product’ is Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser – its so easy to pop on when I want a bit of coverage and it gives a lovely glow to my skin. I’ll also pack mascara, a brown shimmery eye crayon that doubles as liner and shadow, a brow pencil, and some pressed powder for on the go. And I take more lipsticks than I’ll ever wear. Totally agree, we’ve got to have options!
Kiss & Make-up says
Oh yeah, me too, I always wear make-up when I’m on holiday. Less than usual, sure, but I just can’t go 100% make-up free. You’re lucky to be such a natural beauty, Karen! Whether you have a full face on, just a touch of make-up or nothing, you’re always beautiful.
Virginia says
Like one of the previous commenters, I usually bring waay too much and end up using very little. Shadow/liner concealer, and a bright Lippie. If I’m going swimming or to the beach I wear nothing but spf.
NathasjaT says
You look beautiful in this picture. I do wear make up but less than I usually would. My skin gets very sweaty/oily/gross in warm weather so that doesnt help. What lipstick are you wearing in this picture – its gorg!
Karen says
Hi NathasjaT!
I’m wearing one of my coral faves — NARS Lodhi. 🙂
Lena says
was wondering also what’s on your lips. will need to check out lodhi!
Leah G. says
Since most of my vacations involve hiking and road trip travel during each day I wear makeup typically only at night when I go out to dinner! 🙂
Gloria says
Hmm, good question, but not a difficult one! Of course we need to wear makeups on vacation!! Photos are all that matters to us speaking of vacation. (serious face). haha, my family normally ask me to wake up 1 hour before them to make sure I can leave the hotel room on time… I got extremely nervous when people are waiting for me… btw, what lipstick are you wearing in this photo? I checked your long list in the previous post. Seems to be a tom ford summer collection? It looks very pretty on you!
Karen says
Hi Gloria,
Thank you. It’s NARS Lodhi!
Angela Bonanza says
The lip color you’re wearing in this pic is so cheerful and makes your teeth look super white!! What kind of product is it? I definitely bring makeup on trips, occasionally too much of it, because I like to feel extra cute when I go visit a new place, go to dinner, see a beautiful museum, etc. on vacation. I haven’t been on vacation just to go to the beach in ages but that sounds fun and I don’t think I’d wear very much makeup then, just a lot of sunscreen!
Karen says
Hi Angela,
It’s NARS Lodhi. 🙂
Agata says
Yes! I always wear makeup when I am out, so on vacation too. What kind and how much it depends on the place I am going. But I always bring too much with me and end up using the same products over and over.
And your lip color looks so pretty! And that hat- love it!
Anastassia says
Very little make up on vacation. Just the essentials. Sunscreen all day long, a bb creamm, mascara and lip balm. At night I may wear a little more but usually not a foundation.I may wear an eye color too.
Tracy says
My thought is most of my friends I’ve had since childhood including my husband and then there’s the fam and all of them have seen me sans makeup. The rest of the peeps on vacation are strangers and I could care less what they think since I’ll probably never see them again.
I always bring it possibly for a night out but I rarely even touch it. I’m usually having too much fun and want to get out and do as much as I can instead of spending time getting ready. Besides wearing sunblock my hair is very thick and long-ish so it usually ends up in a crazy bun and a I may throw on a lip product to keep them hydrated but that’s it.
Tatiana says
I love the look you’re wearing in the photo and would love to hear about it, especially that pretty lipstick. Of course I wear makeup on vacation. I try to limit how much I bring, concentrating more on skincare. But I try to keep it to one versatile eye palette, one blush, the usual brow, liner and lash combo. And I try to narrow down the lippies to 3 or 4. Of course, if we’re in Hawaii, I wear less. But if we’re in a city and going out to dine some place fabulous, I want to look good.
Iris says
I do wear makeup on vacation but modify it so it’s more natural. I wear more muted colours unless I have a special event to go to.
Cherie says
This is so unbelievably helpful. You have the perfect vacay makeup look. I’m trying to figure this out for our next vacation (we’re thinking of spending a week in Greece). I’m thinking of things that would last throughout the day and give me some color without looking overly done (Laura Mercier Bonne Mine sticks in bronze and coral, maybe longwear eyeshadow sticks, YSL lip tint oil, Dior color reviver balm), give me a glowing look when I walk around and perhaps more dressy when we dine out. I want to keep things pretty light but I like a little makeup for pics!
Brandi says
So besides NARS Lodhi, what were you wearing? You look totes adorbs in that hat, BTW!
Lauren says
ZOMG you look amazing! I absolutely love you in bright coral lipsticks!! I love your hat also!
100% do I wear makeup on vaca! Sometimes more, or try a different look! For some reason I ALWAYS get oily on any vaca, so I powder up even more than at home!
yelena says
you look gorgeous! and I would love to hear what makeup worked for you while in NOLA… I’ve lived here for 10 YEARS and have yet to find an eyeliner that won’t run by the end of the day.
this heat and humidity is crazy. I love that someone else is now writing about it and experiencing it.
PS. I’ve tried pencil, liquid, gel, liners and I think gel actually stays on longest. but still not as well as I’d like.
Tiffanie says
I always do! I even wear makeup when camping. Of course, it’s minimal, but I don’t like going completely bare-faced. I always feel better and like the pictures better. Please share where you got that hat! It’s so cute!
LindaLibraLoca says
I wear makeup even when I go out hiking. Just a little, but nevertheless I do. I just feel put together and ready to conquer the day if I at least apply mascara and concealer.
Your hat is too cute by the way. Where did you get it?
Tulipthecat says
I think I wear more makeup when I’m on vacation. I have more time to put it on. I love the look you have. I’m trying to figure out what makeup to bring on my trip in September for my cousin’s wedding in the Philippines and when I go to Dubai. I’m in search of a humidity resistant foundation.
caz says
Ooh yes – full face coverage with sun protection, bronzer/eye colour, mascara & bright lipstick.
Gloria (DivaShop) says
I’m kinda weird in that I wear makeup more often when I’m on vacation then when I’m at home. Some women use makeup as a pick me up when they’re feeling low, but when I’m feeling low I don’t want to bother. I wear it because I’m feeling relatively good & I feel pretty good when I’m on vacation. 🙂
Maggie says
Absolutely. I can’t remember the last time I vacationed without bringing makeup. I probably won’t for camping (I haven’t camped since I was a teen!) if I ever do it again bc I don’t want to be concerned about removal without access to a faucet (I hate makeup wipes).
Chelsea says
Yup! I don’t go on many vacations, sadly, but I definitely wear it. It’s similar to the lazy version of my everyday look – tinted sunscreen, concealer, brows, liner, and mascara.
Rachel R. says
I absolutely wear makeup on vacations and trips. I tailor it to the trip (camping or hotel trip) and climate. I try not to overpack. I’m terrible about overpacking–I hate being unprepared. I’m improving, though! (I’m rarely successful.) I usually shy away from super-complicated looks, contouring, etc. Short trips, I take as many samples as possible so I’m packing less and my stuff takes up less room. I tend to go more neutral so my makeup goes with whatever outfit. I always bring a MLBB lipstick and a bright lipstick. I really like TF Chocolate Bar or Semi-Sweet. They are a bit bulky, but the tins travel well and they have a ton of shades so I don’t get bored. I can also use some of the shades as liners, for my brows, or even for light contouring/highlighting.
Aenea says
Definitely wear makeup on vacays. It’s the only time I get my photo taken a lot so I want to look good in them. I’m having fun putting together a makeup kit for my next trip. There’s going to be lots of snow so making sure my base is extra moisturizing.
Eesha says
Well it totally depends on what I am doing over the vacations and the place. On a beach I don’t wear any (except for a dinner date or so) and if I am up in the Himalayas I certainly wear makeup and also get carried away… LoL
BooBooNinja says
Not even mascara, Karen?
Lena says
going through the comments, i can’t find one single lady going without makeup on vacation, lol
we in the right place here.
i do too; i only go without when walking the dog a 8pm night. no one’s gonna see my face anyway lol
any other time, it’s at least a tinted moisturizer, eyebrows, a bit of lip color.
Trude says
I just got back from Norway, and definitely brought and wore makeup! I was on vacation and happy to have a bit more time to play as compared to normal work mornings (when either I don’t care enough or don’t have time). On actual travel days, though, I just did moisturizer and mascara. 🙂
Vanessa says
Nope. Unless there will be some kind of event. 🙂
