You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”
Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts?
Um…not very. I’m actually slightly uncomfortable about it, although I can do it when it’s kind of expected, like at garage sales and flea markets, but I don’t really go to those very often (I think I’ve watched one too many horror movies about people buying haunted furniture).I guess I’m just the type of person who likes to walk into a store, and if something’s a certain price, then alright! Done deal.
- What’s one memory you have of summer vacation?
I remember eating a lot of frozen pizza…Actually, I remember them being really quite boring, to be honest, because both of my parents worked out of the house all day long, so when summers rolled around, my little brother and I had to stay in the house, and we weren’t allowed to really go out because we didn’t have any parental supervision.
We did a lot of (boring sh*t) sitting around, reading and watching TV. Oh — and those frozen pizzas.
During the time when my friend Karrie lived next door, I was allowed to go over there…but we had to stay inside the house.
- Have you ever changed a car tire?
I have not. That’s what AAA and Geico are for. 🙂Sorry to sound like a wuss…but I really don’t want to get dirty.
- What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you?
To ask myself whether the little things that bother me will still bother me in a year. I think that both Jen and Cindy are more patient than I am when it comes to just, like, life’s little aggravations.I’m a bit more high strung, so when something bugs me, and it bugs me straight off, I’ll ask myself, “Is this really gonna bother me in a year?” and most of the time the answer is no.
Mostly.
- Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time?
Phases. Sometimes I’ll carry the same purse all the time, especially if it’s big and practical and fits my big camera, and my phone, and all my junk, so I’ll go through phases where I’ll get stuck on using that one purse.
Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts?
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation?
3. Have you ever changed a car tire?
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you?
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time?
Good morning and happy Monday! I hope you had a nice weekend, my friend, and hopefully your Monday has gotten off to a good start.
I have a couple of things on my mind this week… First, hair. Tomorrow I’m going to get my hair done, yay! — and I’ve been furiously googling Helena Christensen hair styles. Then on Wednesday my neighbor, who’s a high school senior, is coming over, and we’re gonna do a trial run for her prom makeup.
Yup, I’m gonna be doing her prom makeup this weekend. She wants Kylie Jenner lips (all the kids do) and a warm brown, kind of purply red smokey eye, which I’m totally on board with.
Have a great week, and I’ll talk to you soon. 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts?
Not very. I am with you on this one- that’s the set price, fine- I will pay it.
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation?
Spending summer time at my summer house in Poland in the woods. It was kind of boring because there was no Internet back then but very relaxing. I’d read a ton of books, go for long walks and ride a bike!
3. Have you ever changed a car tire?
Nope and since I don’t drive I don’t see why I would.
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you?
That true friendship lasts forever. I have been best friends with my friend Anna since primary school and although she’s still in Poland, although we don’t talk every day, she is always there for me and I know it will never change.
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time?
I tend to use the same purse all the time, unless I need a more elegant purse then I’d switch for going out but other than that- I will wear it till I see the next purse I want.
That’s so awesome that you’re doing your neighbor’s prom makeup! I can’t wait to see how it turns out (I hope she will let you take a picture of her).
Your hair…So you want bangs?
Meghan says
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts?
Not very, despite having taken a Negotiations class in college. It’s my introverted nature. I’d rather buy something without having to actually speak to anyone!
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation?
All the families in my neighborhood had summer passes to a nearby park with a lake for swimming, so my dad would take my brother and me. Thinking back on it now it was a pretty gross BUT they sold frozen Snickers bars!
3. Have you ever changed a car tire?
Heck no. For awhile I thought it was an important feminist issue, that a woman should know how to change a tire, and that’s probably true, but I’d rather just make a phone call and pay someone. haha
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you?
To lean on your friends. They want to help.
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time?
I used to be more into coordinating, but now I tend to lug around a carry-all. It’s more about function than form. I have a cognac-colored tote from Tory Burch that I’ve been carrying almost exclusively for 8 or 9 months.
Pavithra says
How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts? – Hopeless! And I think the salesperson can tell, I overpay for so many things!
What’s one memory you have of summer vacation? – Playing a lot of cricket with my rowdy cousins!
Have you ever changed a car tire? – Hahahahah!
What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you? – To never take your loved ones for granted!
Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time? – I have just two that I use at the moment – a big tote for work, and a small one for everything else!
Your neighbor is so lucky! I hope she lets you put some up pictures!
Debra says
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts? I rather enjoy it but I grew up learning to finesse that fight!
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation? Hmm. I dreaded summer (school was my refuge) but I did live for those 2 weeks at the shore at the end of the hot humid endurance test. I’d say walking on the beach at sunset with a special person.
3. Have you ever changed a car tire? No. End.of.Story.
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you? You’re gonna pull through “it”!
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time? I’ll go a week at a time with one purse and then change. I gotta admit, sometimes the outfit is geared to purse instead of the other way around just cause it’s easier to pull something else off the hanger than re-load a different purse.
Clutches for summer are good!
The young Helena was a siren to hear! Good for you, helping a youngin’ with the prom makeup. I’ve never been to a prom but it wasn’t cause I didn’t have a makeup-artist on board! She ought to appreciate some quality lessons from you!
BrooklynShoeBabe says
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts?
I’m horrible at negotiating discounts. I don’t like to do it especially at garage sales, because I feel like I might be perceived as a cheapskate.
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation?
One of my favorite memories I have of summer vacation is eating cold cut platters or sandwiches for dinner because it was just too hot for my grandmother to cook us a traditional dinner.
3. Have you ever changed a car tire?
I can’t even drive. 🙁
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you?
To not be afraid of change…is the worst possible outcome of a problem really that bad?
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time?
About 90% of the time, I use the same purse unless I’m going out dancing or somewhere really fancy and I don’t need to carry many items, then I carry a smaller bag.
Tulipthecat says
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts?
I’m so bad at it. While I was in the Philippines I hated to bargain because I feel sorry for the people. My aunt told me “Why do you feel sorry? They are the ones taking advantage of you.” Either way I can’t do it.
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation?
Going to Disneyland every summer with my parents friends and their kids and walking to 7-11 for chili dogs
3. Have you ever changed a car tire?
Ummm…no…
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you?
To just enjoy life and not take everything so seriously
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time?
Hmmm….I would say I change my purse for each season. No matter how much I try to carry a small purse it never works. I have so much junk that I carry around especially during the work day. On the weekend I just carry my phone around.
I can’t wait to see your hair. I’m getting my hair done on Saturday. It’s time for a new color. I was trying to organize my stuff but I just can’t. It seems the more I organize the more messy it looks. Plus Tulip has been following me around meowing. I took her out yesterday and she was obsessed with eating grass even though she has her own grass in the house. Jazmine keeps climbing up into our tree house and then can’t get down.
Jules says
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts?
Not really. I work in retail and I find it extremely frustrating when someone brings up an item that’s in perfect condition and goes “Yeah, can I get a discount on this?” or “I’m buying two, is there a special price?” NO.
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation?
Going to my aunt and uncle’s cottage. It wasn’t much – basically one main room with two small-ish bedrooms attached) was right by the lake and my brother and I would walk along the beach and collect sea glass (which is why I bought Formula X’s Sea Glass nail polish). My aunt would always burn Nag Champa incense to drive away the spiders, so to this day any whisper of that smell will take me right back to those days.
3. Have you ever changed a car tire?
Nope.
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you?
“Life is a long time, not much that’s significant happens in an hour, or a day, or a week, even a month… give yourself at least that much time to witness your effect on any scenario inside or outside of yourself…”
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time?
Same purse all the time! Right now it’s a heart shaped red satchel with black studs that I snagged on sale from Hudson’s Bay.
Kiss & Make-up says
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts? I’ll do it because A) I’m poor and B) I love a good bargain, but I wouldn’t say I enjoy it per se.
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation? The blistering heat in Death Valley, that’s a memory that’ll always stick!
3. Have you ever changed a car tire? Does watching people do it count? 😉 Last summer my brother and I got a flat tire in the middle of nowhere in Crete. Our jeep didn’t even have the right tools in the trunk, but thankfully after a while some old Greek dude passed us in his pickup truck and he helped us change the tire while babbling to us in Greek. If it weren’t for that man we probably still would have been stuck there, lol.
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you? Honesty is the best policy.
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time? I only have one good purse, lol, so yeah, same purse all the time.
Allison C says
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts? When I lived in NYC, I did it from time to time for certain purchases because it was expected. But around here, other than buying a car…almost never. I can do it if the retailer is willing but if it’s a set price, than no.
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation? Too many to mention, except maybe asking a shopkeeper in Venice if he sold his sons instead of if he sold figs, ‘coz I was tired and my Italian isn’t the best!
3. Have you ever changed a car tire? no, I would wreck my nails
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you? not sure about that one
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time? I have a lot of purses but I’m usually too lazy to change
Stephanie Smith says
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts? Not. At. All! It’s not my thing, AT ALL. Sad but true. If i don’t like the price, I won’t buy it.
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation? Swimming at Grandma’s house! My kids have he same memories, which makes me happier than I can express!
3. Have you ever changed a car tire? Yes. My parents wouldn’t let us get our driver’s licenses if we didn’t know how to change a tire. My husband and I just changed one together two months ago!
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you? Sit back and think things through. Approach things calmly rather than emotionally.
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time? I use the same purse all the time, it’s the perfect purse for me, the right size and color!
Erin says
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts?
It depends. If it’s a place known for haggling, then I will. I will also do it when buying a car.
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation?
Being in southern coastal Oregon and having my camper “camped” by a black bear.
3. Have you ever changed a car tire?
I’ve helped do it.
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you?
I’ve never really had a friend teach me to do anything.
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time?
I have a main bag that I use for everything short of formal occasions or evenings.
Vanessa says
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts?
Not very, but I can do it. I just have to make a firm decision on what I’ll pay, and be ready to walk away if it doesn’t happen. I even do it in stores if there are defects to an item. For online purchases, free shipping is usually negotiable, if another retailer offers a similar item with free shipping.
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation?
Reading books, playing video games, running with music, and traveling.
3. Have you ever changed a car tire?
Yes, but I was a complete clown the first time.
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you?
To be more kind.
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time?
I have two purses, so… same purse all the time. Since I bike and travel, it’s more common for me to use a backpack.
Kim says
OMG, your neighbor is SO lucky to have you. She’s going to look fabulous for her prom. I hope you have a great time. 🙂
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts? No, I’m terrible. Like you, I just want the price to be the price. I hate when people haggle with me (which is why I refuse to have garage sales) and don’t like to do it to others.
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation? Desperately wanting a swimming pool. HAHA! My friends and I would ride our bikes around all day, all summer long. We were always outside and sweaty and only a couple of friends had pools. I was like Christmas morning when we were invited swimming. 🙂
3. Have you ever changed a car tire? I have not. I worry that I wouldn’t have the upper body strength for it and when I put my weight into it, the wrench would slip and I’d end up leaving half my face on the pavement (you can probably tell that’s happened to someone I know – HAHA!)
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you? I guess to be myself. There will always be people who like you and people who don’t. Be who you are and spend time with people who like you (insert Bridget Jones chorus) JUST AS YOU ARE. 🙂
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time? When I’m forced to carry a purse, it’s one of the two I own. I figured one black and one brown would cover most situations. But I prefer to just stick with the Hubs who has pockets for everything we need!

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 373
May 18th, 2015
The Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll for May 18, 2015
You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts? Only this year I’ve become a little comfortable. It started the end of last summer when I spent a fortune at 1 store (I wont say) and the next day every item went in sale w an additional 30% off the sale price. I didn’t hesitate to ask for a huge price adjustment.
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation? Even as a kid, I wasn’t super excited about summer vacations. I’m not sure why, but I remember being bothered by the heat and crowds everywhere. I did love camping in Northern Michigan tho.
3. Have you ever changed a car tire? In drivers ed! And I was good…like mechanic good! Im sure I was showinf off for my cute teacher!! It’s been 20 Years since that day and nope, I’m with Karen…call AAA!
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you? This didn’t come from my best friend, but from a friend/coworker. You are not obligated to answer texts or calls immediately. I used to immediately respond to needy people, and by doing so, they knew they had my full attention and expected me to drop everything.
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time? These days it’s one purse. I used to switch all the time, now it’s either basic black or brown. I FINALLY chose quality over quantity in the handbag section. I used to be obsessed w knockoffs and buy every one in NYC…until the straps would break while I was carrying them!
Lauren says
Oops, I hit “publish” too quick. I can not wait to see your new hair!!! And, where were you 20 years ago for my Prom?! Your neighbor is a super lucky girl and will look stunning. She IS in the best hands! Happy Monday, Karen!
Lulle says
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts?
I’m not at all. I can do it in an environment that requires it (outdoor markets abroad, etc…) but it’s out of my comfort zone.
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation?
When I was about 5 my family went to Spain in the summer, and I have this memory of eating slices of coconuts in the evening by the beach.
3. Have you ever changed a car tire?
Yes, but not on my own. It was the driving school car and the instructor did most of the work. The tire explosion was due to me hitting the curb *grins*
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you?
People change, they evolve through life, and sometimes trying to keep them close is pointless.
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time?
I have a handful of purses but I tend to use the same most of the time. I like crossbody types because it’s the most comfortable/convenient for me.
Rachel R. says
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts? I don’t do it a lot, but I’m comfortable enough when I want to do it. I don’t think I excel at it.
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation? Practically living at my BFF’s house, or her practically living at mine.
3. Have you ever changed a car tire? Not all by myself, but I’ve helped. I know how.
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you? I met my BFF in 8th grade. She taught me that I was likable, and that not everyone cared about how little money my family had.
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time? I usually switch seasonally, or when I’m bored. I carry too much crap to change my purse every day. If I’m going out or it’s a special occasion, and I’m dressing up, then I’ll match to my outfit.
Christine says
It sounds like so much fun to do your neighbor’s makeup for prom! And I can’t wait to see what magic happens to your hair — it’s always fabulous.
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts?
Ehhhh. I don’t like confrontation, so not a whole lot — but that’s only if I’m on the receiving end of a discount. The business side of me is a bit more “You want what for HOW MUCH?” because it’s not like we’re asking an absurd amount for our type of service.
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation?
Learning to kayak on Lake Placid! And then kayaking on Lake Michigan.
3. Have you ever changed a car tire?
A few times, but now that I have roadside assistance, no thanks. I can do it if I don’t want to/can’t wait the hour for help.
(Another summer vacay memory: learning to put a muffler back on a Jeep Cherokee!)
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you?
To look at things more objectively and separate my differences in learning and beliefs.
She’s one of those world-traveling social-minded people — it’s wonderful.
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time?
I rotate between a few purses and it more depends on where I’m going rather than my outfit. If I’m going to ballet, BIG purse! Brunch, I’ll probably just take my wristlet.
LindaLibraLoca says
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts?
Absolutely not. I always figure that if someone sells something at a garage sale, he needs the money!
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation?
Reading. I loved it, sitting in the sun and reading my mothers magazines, books, anything. Endless days without homework.
3. Have you ever changed a car tire?
Yes. I want to know I could do it if I need to.
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you?
Changing a car tyre 😉
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time?
I only own one purse, so my choices are limited…
Happy new week, Karen.
Will you take pictures of the prom makeup?
Holly says
I think it’s fantastic that you were asked to do prom makeup for your neighbor! Hopefully she’ll allow you to post a photo or two? My sister & sisters-in-law are not makeup fiends (Freaks? Fanatics? Fangirls?) like I am, so I hope my nieces (if they choose to wear makeup) will come to me for advice.
Shannon says
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts?
Hmm… depends on the situation. I wanted a certain pair of pumps from Aldo, and all they had in my size was the floor model – so I asked for a discount, and there was some back and forth (“we can ship you a new pair..” “no, I want them today” etc.) but I ended up getting it! So if it’s a situation that calls for it, I’m all about it.
I also got a hot dog for $1 the other day, because I went up to a hot dog guy and asked how much they cost, and he said “three dollars!” To which I sadly replied “I only have one” (which was true, btw). He responded, “two dollars!” and I was like, “no, really, I only have one dollar.” As I turned away, he goes “miss, miss” and starts prepping a hot dog for me. I thanked him, and he said “no money!” and laughed and shook his head.
That’s how I do MY finagling 🙂 when it’s completely unavoidable, haha!
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation?
Reading. Reading, reading, all day reading, in my parents’ living room on the couch, with the sun filtering through the leaves and the lace curtains. Usually I was STILL avoiding homework (because I was homeschooled, and quite the procrastinator, so even though I was supposed to be done in June, I’d often be doing math problems until the end of July), but that’s what I remember most 🙂
3. Have you ever changed a car tire?
Nope. I’m sure I could learn how, if need be! There have to be instructions online, right? 🙂
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you?
Gosh.. too many friends, too many good lessons! I honestly can’t pick one!
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time?
Definitely a same-purse-all-the-time kind of gal. I like one that goes with everything, thanks very much! (although I love the *idea* of using a different purse all the time, ha!)
Kwmechelle says
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts? Not at all. Not even at yard sales. Our neighborhood had one this weekend & I sucked at negotiating. Needless to say, I didn’t buy anything.
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation? Spending summer vacay at my grandma’s place- pb&j for lunch, sleeping in, staying up late, Saturday morning cartoons, walks down the street, & skating downhill. I have an aunt that’s 5 months my junior so she was also apart of this fun. And we’d talk girl-talk for hours. Those are some of my fondest memories.
3. Have you ever changed a car tire? Nope. I think about learning but the girlie part of me who rarely skips a mani talks me out of it 🙂
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you? Forgiveness. My bestie never holds a grudge, always pursues reconciliation, & is the most giving person ever. Love her long time! 🙂
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time? Nope, too much trouble to change purses regularly. Though I’ve been known to carry a coordinating clutch when going out, special occasions, & the like.
Carla N. says
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts?
When it comes to a negotiation like buying a car, I’m shameless – I once almost got into a shouting match with a salesman over $50! Otherwise, I typically just pay whatever’s on the sticker.
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation?
The time the father of a friend of mine from down the street bought a huge box of assorted fireworks and set them all off in my yard. My parents were horrified, because it was illegal, but I thought it was GREAT! Fortunately, nobody was injured or arrested, and the entire neighborhood got quite a show.
3. Have you ever changed a car tire?
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you?
When I got contacts at 16, after wearing glasses since I was eight, my friend Kim, who’d gone through a similar transition, advised me, “Get your lashes as long as you can – that will bring out your eyes, and really your whole face.”
I still follow that advice, at 50!
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time?
Same one, all the time – I’m just not a purse woman.
And I learned how to change a tire in Driver’s Ed, but promptly forgot, and depend on the guys in the big noisy trucks to do the job for me.
tirurit says
YAY for getting your hair done!
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts?
It annoys me! Me? I’ll enter a shop, if I see something that I like and that I think has a reasonable price I will take it, otherwise I will walk away. Same thing applies for “over solicitous” staff; just let me do your thing!
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation?
Before we had a swimming pool the most wonderful thing would be to play with the hose while we were “helping” to water the garden
3. Have you ever changed a car tire?
Nope. But I have never had a flat tire so it is more of a situation that has not arisend yet
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you?
To trust others a bit more
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time?
Pffff! *hides winter purse that has been in use since September* Let’s skip this question before the fashion police arrest me, right?
Stephanie says
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts? I’m terrible at it, I feel SO uncomfortable asking for a discount. I don’t even like asking for an adjustment when the price comes up wrong. I tend to do 90% of my shopping online for that reason.
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation? I was such a dorky kid that I spent most of my summers reading. I can remember sitting in front of the fan, reading and eating sunflower seeds. Totally random. My mom and dad were divorced and my mom had to work so I was home alone all day. I wasn’t allowed to watch TV (my mom would feel the TV to see if it was hot) but there wasn’t much on back then anyway.
3. Have you ever changed a car tire? Yes. My brother made me change my tire and change my oil when I got my license. I did NOT like changing my oil but I appreciate that I know how to do those things.
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you? Not to take myself too seriously, it’s good to step back and laugh.
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time? Right now, same purse. But that’s because my hubby bought me an expensive designer purse and I would feel bad switching it out. It’s finally starting to show some wear and I want to buy some cheaper purses so I can switch them out more.
Trude says
1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts?
Terrible. Just tell me the dang price, and if I don’t like it I’ll go somewhere else!
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation?
So many! Mainly Norway though – everything about it, but particularly how much it feels like home (even though SoCal does too). We used to go every other summer for at least two weeks. I’m going back for the first time since ’08 in a couple weeks and I can’t wait!
3. Have you ever changed a car tire?
Nope! I’m with you – that’s what AAA is for!
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you?
Good question – probably how to strike that balance of putting other’s needs before you own, but still standing up for yourself. She’s an amazing attorney and a personal role model.
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time?
I don’t switch by outfit so much as occasion – during the week I have a larger tote for work (just got a goooogeous Fossil one on super sale!), then a smaller crossbody on weekends, and a couple clutches. I really cut down my purse collection this past year to just the essentials. 🙂

1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts? Not at all. I find it mortifying when I’m with someone who likes to haggle at places haggling isn’t even a thing!
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation? The summer between junior and senior year was so blissful. I didn’t have a job yet, and both my parents did, so I spent my days at the pool swimming and laying out. It was amazing! I actually lost 23 pounds that summer from swimming so much and being outside as much as possible. Definitely good memories there!
3. Have you ever changed a car tire? I have. My dad taught me when I was 17.
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you? How to not get dragged down by other people’s drama. I still have a hard time with it, but the advice always pops up when I’m struggling with it and I remind myself it’s “not my circus, not my monkeys.”
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time? I fall in love and use the same purse for months!
I can’t wait to see your new haircut! That is so exciting that you’re doing your neighbor’s prom makeup!! Lucky her, living next to one of the best beauty bloggers and makeup aficionados in the contiguous US of A! 🙂

1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts?
~Not terribly, but I learned from my dad, so I can do it if I have to.
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation?
~Being in the water. As a kid, I spent a lot of time in the pool and the ocean. I got pretty tan each year. Now, I don’t have unlimited free time to go to the pool, so I don’t get as dark as I did as a kid without the help of self tanner.
3. Have you ever changed a car tire?
~Yes, several times. My father taught me how to do car maintenance when I got my first car. My dad and brother are into racing muscle cars, so I’ve learned a lot about different maintenance.
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you?
~To be yourself and not care what others think. She is unapologetically herself, and I love that about her.
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time?
~I use the same purse for a while. Just recently I got a saddle brown Michael Kors bag for about $100 at TJ Maxx. I love that I basically have a $500 purse at a super discounted price. It’s really durable, cute, and goes with everything.

1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts?
Hmm…I don’t do this very often but I’m quite proud of the ONE time I negotiated a discount on a sleepshirt at Victoria’s Secret. The sleepshirt had what looked like a small pen mark on the back of the sleepshirt and the salesperson gave me 10% off, score!
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation? Bike riding to the beach.
3. Have you ever changed a car tire? No, but I know how to change one.
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you? My bestie, Barbara, is very resilient – she is my inspiration to persevere.
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time? I can be such a creature of habit. Sometimes it’s just convenient to use the same purse. I will switch up my purse if I’m going out for a special occasion.

1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts?
– not at all, I don’t haggle ever. Either I’m ok with the price I’m quote or I’m not, this of course drives my family up the wall since they’ve grown up in a place where haggling a price is day to day stuff but I’m happily paying the asking price or walking away.
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation?
– most of my summer memories have been lazy, there are some nice ones of cottage country with friends and that’s pretty nice.
3. Have you ever changed a car tire?
– nope, I don’t really drive so I haven’t encountered it, if I did then you better believe I’ll have AAA.
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you?
– how to trust and love unconditionally, I’m not there yet but I’m always amazed to see them do it!
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time?
– I can’t imagine transferring things around constantly, I’m all about keeping things simple. I have a few different ones I change through the seasons but I’ll use the same one for at least a few months before even considering changing it, these days it’s my Coach white leather hadley bag that’s soft and collapses at the corners enough to look small for day to day yet I can carry around things like a water bottle, sunblock, and a makeup bag so I’m prepared for everything!

1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts?
I think the time I do it most is with cabs, and I’m very comfortable with it, however when I’m late I don’t want to negotiate just arrive on time.
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation?
Hot weather and quite boring, because we went to my mother’s little town (we’re talking about no more than 1000 inhabitants) and there’s no one to play with.
3. Have you ever changed a car tire?
Never, I don’t know how to even when I think it’s a necessary knowledge.
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you?
To really trust in myself, I think all of my bffs really have higher hopes on me than myself; so it’s a reminder of how good I can be.
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time?
As I only have like three and all are the same size changing them it’s fast, so yes I change but most of the times I use the one I like more.
The weekend was really busy, because on Saturday was my sister’s birthday and also I entered as a volunteer in a NGO for sexual and reproductive rights and in the night we have a fundraising. And on Sunday I had to go shopping groceries.

1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts? Like you, only at garage sales or flea markets. So I’m OK at it but don’t have a lot of practice.
2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation? Swimming in Lake Tahoe!
3. Have you ever changed a car tire? No, but I’m about 98% sure I could do it if I had to.
4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you? Be courageous!
5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time? I usually stay with one during a season, with occasional switches if it clashes terribly with an outfit I have.

I am not good at negotiating discounts and I hate it. I love daily cruises in small island. Never changed a tire and I hope I never have to do it. I don’t know about the best thing I learned from best friend, probably a lot. I have one purse for winter and one for summer.
