So…what is the Monday Poll?
Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past 10 (!) years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.?
1. Whatcha wearing on your lips?
Oh, not much. Just Urban Decay Rehab Makeup Prep Lip Love balm for the time being. I’ll put on lipstick later (haven’t decided what color I want to go with yet), but my lips have been drier than usual, ever since I started upping up my glycolic acid game.
Lip Love is so bomb, BTW. It’s pretty thick and very moisturizing, and it actually lasts on my lips for hours. It’s not a typical disappearing lip balm that you have to reapply 50 times per day, although you can do that also if you want.
2. The fictional character you’d most want to have on your side in a zombie/alien/killer virus/government takeover apocalypse?
Rick Grimes from The Walking Dead, and maybe — just maybe — I’d make it through the first day without being turned into a zombie or transported up to the alien mother ship.
And if Rick were unavailable, then Brienne of Tarth, because homegirl does not f*ck around.
3. In your estimation, what’s a beauty brand that doesn’t get its due?
Pai Shau.
I discovered their shampoo (hair cleanser) and conditioner a few months ago and since got distracted by other hair products, but that’s mostly because of my beauty product ADD. The more I think about it, the more I’m realizing how much I loved the way they made my hair look and feel, so I need to revisit Pai Shau again very soon.
4. How do you feel about the Dirty Dancing remake?
Frankly…I’m pissed about it. Seriously, what crazy person decided that the first movie, which is PERFECTION, needed to be remade?
Of course, I still plan to watch it anyway…even though I’m hating on it at the moment. 🙂
5. How do you think you’d look with a beard?
Quite dashing! I’d keep it closely trimmed and neat. It would probably be salt and pepper, which would make me looked very distinguished, LOL!
I’d ROCK a beard.
6. Chili or mac & cheese?
Shoot, girl, why can’t I have both at the same time!?
OK, well, if I have to choose, then I choose mac & cheese (haha, I almost just typed MAC & cheese). With truffle oil.
7. What’s something kinda weird you like doing?
Sometimes when I get home from the gym I’ll sit in my car in the garage and listen to music for 15 minutes.
Because there are no little humans or animals up on me, and nobody asking me questions, and I can just rock out by myself.
Happy Memorial Day to you
I think I’m gonna take it easy today, which sounds perfectly alright to me. Yesterday I went to my friend’s baby shower in the city, and then in the afternoon I went and got my roots done, so right now I’m basking in the glory of freshly dyed roots, ah…
Are you doing anything holiday related?
It just occurred to me that today would be a great day for burgers, fries and/or chips, so we may do that later for lunch. This seems like good snacking weather. LOL!
Have a great Memorial Day and a splendid week. Sending sweet hugs and kisses to ya, and I hope something important goes your way. Talk to you soon.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Stephanie says
1. Whatcha wearing on your lips? Jack Black lip balm at the moment
2. The fictional character you’d most want to have on your side in a zombie/alien/killer virus/government takeover apocalypse? Daryl from Walking Dead or Woody Harrelson’s character in Zombieland
3. In your estimation, what’s a beauty brand that doesn’t get its due? Makeup Forever, I’m not saying they aren’t well known. But I feel like they don’t get credit for the things they do really well. I LOVE their smoothing primer and their eyeshadows are pretty amazing.
4. How do you feel about the Dirty Dancing remake? NOPE. It’s like Hollywood has run out of ideas so they’re pulling out movies that don’t need to be remade.
5. How do you think you’d look with a beard? Well, I think my mustache looks pretty good, so I think I’d do ok with a beard.
6. Chili or mac & cheese? mac & cheese all the way
7. What’s something kinda weird you like doing? My husband and I “talk” for the cats. If they’re fighting or acting all crazy I’ll be frustrated and say “What is wrong with you??? Why can’t you just settle down?” and my husband will answer for them and I do the same thing. He will tell one of them to stop it and I’ll say “NO!” We’re nuts.
Karen says
Hi Stephanie,
I loooove that primer too. It’s the one in the gray tube, right?
Hope you and the kitties are having a nice long weekend. Whenever I think of kitty Jon Snow, I want to say to him, “You know nothing, Jon Snow.” LOL
Stephanie says
I say that to Jon Snow all the time! Especially when he’s in trouble.
Yes, it’s the primer in the gray tube. I haven’t found anything that blurs my pores as well.
I hope you are having a relaxing Monday.
Ash says
1. Whatcha wearing on your lips? Teeez “Dash of Plum.”
2. The fictional character you’d most want to have on your side in a zombie/alien/killer virus/government takeover apocalypse? Daryl Dixon and Rick Grimes.
3. In your estimation, what’s a beauty brand that doesn’t get its due? I feel like so many people have turned their backs on MAC, but honestly, it’s one of the only brands I feel are at least TRYING something new. Most brands are just releasing highlighter after highlighter, liquid lipstick after liquid lipstick. MAC is still trying to create NEW, innovative products like all the different formulas of lipsticks/glosses they come out with, those cool Spellbinder shadows, eyeglosses, the Extra Dimension formula, the Dazzleshadow or Extra Dimension Shadow formulas… I just feel like, sure, they don’t always hit things out of the park and there are only so many shades in existence, but they’re at least trying to stay innovative and experimenting with different things. For whatever reason, all I ever see is people bashing MAC now and it really bothers me.
4. How do you feel about the Dirty Dancing remake? Meh. I could do without most remakes, including Dirty Dancing. You really can’t recreate a classic. Just leave it be. (Although, I have to say, I did really enjoy the new Beauty and the Beast.)
5. How do you think you’d look with a beard? Hahaha. Odd. And I think I’d be more of the clean shaven type anyway. I don’t hate beards but I think it takes a certain face to pull them off.
6. Chili or mac & cheese? Mac & Cheese. But I do love chili… just not as much. 😉
7. What’s something kinda weird you like doing? I wouldn’t say I “like” doing it… but constantly refreshing the package tracker page. LOL. It’s really OCD. When it’s out for delivery, I obsessively refersh it every five minutes or so. I have no idea why since I’ll obviously know when it’s here but yeah. I am very obsessive about my packages! I’d never want to know how many times I have refreshed a tracking page. It would scare me.
Karen says
Hi Ash,
I totally feel you on MAC. They do a lot of innovative things, and I feel like in many cases they’re ahead of the curve and it takes a few years for everyone else to catch up. I LOVE their Extra Dimension formula, especially the blush, eyeshadow and bronzer. And this weekend I rediscovered an old fave — Lightful C Tinted Cream. It’s SO GOOD. Have you tried it? It’s more for sheer coverage, which I’ve been into lately.
Anywho, I’ve loved and followed the line for years and I still get excited about it.
Ash says
So glad someone else agrees! I think you’re right about them being ahead of the game and people taking time to catch up. So sad though. I will forever be a MAC fan. They are the brand that got me into makeup.
That sounds like me with Volcanic Ash Exfoliator. That came out in what, 2012? And it’s still my favourite thing ever to put on my face! 🙂 I haven’t tried the Tinted Cream because I am usually wearing full coverage with my crappy skin – but you’ve given me a reason to check it out now! I’ve wanted to try a couple other things from that line for a long time now.
Karen says
I will forever be a MAC fan, too. I will look forward to seeing what they have up their sleeves!
Oh, and Volcanic Ash is AMAZING. When it first came out I remember hoarding a couple bottles. Might have to add that into the Unsung Heroes series.
The cool thing with Lightful C Tinted Cream is you can build it, and it builds really well. And if you really want to up the coverage, all you have to do is add a couple drops of your fave full coverage concealer and mix. It’s a beautiful face product, especially for summer. I wear it the underneath Mineralize Skin Finish Natural powder and I think it’s beautiful, natural-looking coverage.
So this is SO old school, but I’ll always and forever be a fan of Cream Colour Base in Hush. I always have one with me. It’s my fave highlighter!
Ash says
Oo, yes! It totally belongs in Unsung Heroes! 😀
Glad it’s buildable. That’s good news. I’d like to wear something lighter in summer too for sure, but it just has to have a little more coverage so this sounds really perfect.
Yes! Hush CCB! I have always had a Hush in my collection. I either use it as an eye base or highlighter. It is SO pretty. I am so iffy about cream products because so many of them crease, but I have purchased many from MAC because they are such good quality and never do anything weird on my skin!
Nicole - paleandfreckled says
1. Whatcha wearing on your lips? Bite Gelato multistick and a NARS light pink deluxe sample of gloss that I can’t recall the name of.
2. The fictional character you’d most want to have on your side in a zombie/alien/killer virus/government takeover apocalypse? Totally Brienne. She’s the best.
3. In your estimation, what’s a beauty brand that doesn’t get its due? Maybe Estee Lauder, but I feel like they’re not marketing to the right audience to get the hype happening. But I feel what you guys are saying about MAC. Definitely been some backlash over the LE collection overload and lacking quality but I think it’s getting better. I just wish they made a few more lighter shades so I could try out all these new cool formulas of foundation!
4. How do you feel about the Dirty Dancing remake? Didn’t know there was one. Hopefully it’s good but the original was a staple of my childhood so I certainly have a lot of fondness for it.
5. How do you think you’d look with a beard? I think it could help the double chin situation, so I’d be all over the Brett Favre style scruff ?
6. Chili or mac & cheese? mac & cheese definitely
7. What’s something kinda weird you like doing? Not weird but never was really an event until I had kids. Driving alone in the car. I can crank my music, get some thinking done; it’s magical.
Syah says
1. Whatcha wearing on your lips? CV Skinlabs Restorative Skin Balm.
2. The fictional character you’d most want to have on your side in a zombie/alien/killer virus/government takeover apocalypse? Good Terminator. 🙂
3. In your estimation, what’s a beauty brand that doesn’t get its due? Osmia Organics (their body oil is delicious) and Suntegrity for their TM. I’ve been using both of these for years and no one’s heard of them!
4. How do you feel about the Dirty Dancing remake? I automatically assume that any kind of remake is doomed to fail. Just let the past be the past.
5. How do you think you’d look with a beard? Good probably.
6. Chili or mac & cheese? Mac and cheese for life.
7. What’s something kinda weird you like doing? I like sorting laundry according to colors and then doing it that way, methodically. I enjoy laundry.
Chris25 says
1) The blood of my enemies? Hehehe. Actually it’s Jersey Shore lip balm. I’m at home today and makeup free.
2) Maggie from TWD or Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
3) I think Buxom for one. I just bought one of their gel lipsticks and I plan on buying more. Someone already said this, but MUFE is another one. I simply adore their HD foundation.
4) I’m fed up with these remakes. They just don’t work. DD came out at a time when people could really appreciate the story (class issues were more cemented) and the soundtrack was very 80s. Let it live in the past as a cult classic.
5) I think I’d look cute with a beard.
6) Chili. Mac n cheese is good but there’s so much good protein in chili.
7) Oh gosh, I can give you a whole book of weird sh*t I do! I get obsessed with fictional characters based on their looks, then make up new stories with them. Ex: from “Once Upon a Time”, I liked the look of King Arthur so much, I came up with a story where he’s a prince, but of a different kingdom and he’s set up in an arranged marriage with the daughter of a high ranking official who doesn’t want to marry him.
Something else I’ve been doing lately is gazing at the FB page of a former professor I am in love with. He’s old enough to be my father, but I can’t get rid of my feelings.
breyerchic04 says
1) Glossier Coconut Balm Do Com. But my hair isn’t even brushed right now, i’m not getting much done, was out quite late last night.
2) I’ll take The Hound.
3) I have no idea? I’m afraid most of what I’m using now is pretty bandwagon-y.
4) So the original is my absolute favorite movie of all times, and is absolutely perfect. I have a framed poster of Patrick Swayze on my wall (admittedly with an Arabian Stallion, who is certainly more the focus of my decorating style than Patrick). I’m not thrilled about the remake, but I watched it on hulu the day after it came out and there are things I liked. There was an extra storyline for the sister that I thought was good. But really it fell flat.
5) I’m barely into them on guys, so not the greatest. Also I like my chin.
6) Mac and cheese definitely!
7) I put my phone or kindle into two ziplock bags and then use it in the bathtub, with no animals or other people in the bathroom asking me questions 😉
Rachel Runyan says
Happy Memorial Day to you! We got two new rescue pets: A young male guinea pig named “Renegade” and a 9-month-old black female kitten named “Coco.” Both are cute as can be and very talkative. (Sadly, a couple weeks ago a predator got into our rabbit run and killed our bunnies. The new pets are helping us overcome our grief.)
1. Whatcha wearing on your lips? Karess Krafters Lip Balm in Sugar Plum. It’s almost used up. I can’t remember the last time I used up a whole lip balm before losing it.
2. The fictional character you’d most want to have on your side in a zombie/alien/killer virus/government takeover apocalypse? Rick and Darryl from The Walking Dead.
3. In your estimation, what’s a beauty brand that doesn’t get its due? I think The Balm gets overlooked a lot, and they make a lot of good products. I feel like the brand gets stuck in a no-man’s land between indy and mid-range products, though.
4. How do you feel about the Dirty Dancing remake? I don’t care. I didn’t like the original.
5. How do you think you’d look with a beard? Like my little brother.
6. Chili or mac & cheese? Mac & cheese. Beans disgust me.
7. What’s something kinda weird you like doing? Sorting and organizing things.
Kate & Zena says
1. Whatcha wearing on your lips? Nothing at the moment which feels…weird. I always have something on my lips.
2. The fictional character you’d most want to have on your side in a zombie/alien/killer virus/government takeover apocalypse? Katniss Everdeen. It’s not just the name (I do allow certain people to call me Kat) and personality similarities, it’s that we have many of the core values. We would probably butt heads come to think of it, but where I lack knowledge (edible plants) she has and where she lacks (uh, knowing warm clothes) I KNOW.
3. In your estimation, what’s a beauty brand that doesn’t get its due? Dermalogica and Clinique. Dermalogica really evened out my skin when I had a really nasty break out period. They give back to so many women operatives. I still use Clinique’s cleanser because it’s one of the few that doesn’t give me hives! (Plus, uh, their chubby sticks! I love them!)
4. How do you feel about the Dirty Dancing remake? No, just, no. The commercial makes me cringe.
5. How do you think you’d look with a beard? Not so great! Our family is known for not growing beards!
6. Chili or mac & cheese? Mac. And. Cheese. It’s my favorite food as it combines my two favorites – pasta and cheese.
7. What’s something kinda weird you like doing? When my mom doesn’t have her 3 pm appointment, I bring peppermints for every single horse in the barn. Some of the horses in the barn don’t get ridden that day, so they just have play time and no treats and I always feel bad about that. A few of the horse have insulin resistance, meaning they can’t process sugar well, and can’t have peppermints; I always give them their treat first before I even open peppermints because they can’t have any. I give them scratches, long deep strokes and kisses on the forehead (except Chance. He likes to bite! He just gets scratches.) The rest get a peppermint and a scratch because I can’t help saying hello that way. The horses and ponies all know me now by the smell and sound of peppermints as I also wear peppermint oil to reduce inflammation on my neck!

Happy memorial (and chillin’ day) to you, Karen! We don’t have the holiday in Germany today, it’s a normal Monday for me -_-
1. Whatcha wearing on your lips?
NARS Asphalt Jungle Lip Gloss. Soooo late in the game to get them, but now I see what the hype for medium to dark skintone ladies. It’s so gorgeous on tanned skin!
2. The fictional character you’d most want to have on your side in a zombie/alien/killer virus/government takeover apocalypse?
Dumbledore :D. He’d have a wise thing or two to say.
3. In your estimation, what’s a beauty brand that doesn’t get its due?
Burberry. They’ve lots of wins in their lineup, yet nobody hyped them as much as Chanel/Tom Ford.
4. How do you feel about the Dirty Dancing remake?
Ugh! But you know a nice twist? Two elderly falling in love in a dance competition :D.
5. How do you think you’d look with a beard?
Gosh I’d hate maintaining it everyday!
6. Chili or mac & cheese?
I love spicy stuff. Hands down chili.
7. What’s something kinda weird you like doing?
Alternating eating sweet and savory, like I like to have chips in between of eating cake.
Laura says
1. Whatcha wearing on your lips? A nourishing nightime lip balm cause I am about to go to bed. But tomorrow morning I am gonna dig into this pile of colourpop lip things I just got and go to town with them.
2. The fictional character you’d most want to have on your side in a zombie/alien/killer virus/government takeover apocalypse? The character Will Smith played in I Am Legend. Badass, smart, resourceful.
3. In your estimation, what’s a beauty brand that doesn’t get its due? Origins. They have amazing face masks and nobody seems to know about them.
4. How do you feel about the Dirty Dancing remake? I really need to watch the original movie once and for all.
5. How do you think you’d look with a beard? Very strange.
6. Chili or mac & cheese? Mac & cheese forever to infinity and beyond!
7. What’s something kinda weird you like doing? Living by myself and not wanting children. I think my life is awesome but people find it weird.
LeeLee B says
1. On your lips? Hourglass Lip Style in color Activist.
2. Who you’d want on your side in a zombie [etc.] apocalypse? Princess Leia.
3. Beauty brand that doesn’t get its due: I don’t know – the brands I like most have good reputations.
4. How do you feel about the Dirty Dancing remake? I don’t think about it. I’m pretty busy.
5. How do you think you’d look with a beard? Ugh!!!!
6. Chili or mac & cheese? Mac & cheese.
7. What’s something kinda weird you like doing? I don’t think anything, but if I did do something weird, I wouldn’t say!
Amy says
Lips: nothing as it’s bedtime. Lately have been alternating lip glosses by shu uemera, buxom, and neutrogena.
Underrated: Vapour. And Gabriel. Vapour’s skin perfector is totally amazing. The ingredients are great, and feel and look great all day. Love Gabriel lip products. Their foundations really stick, too, in a good way.
Dirty Dancing: first I’d heard! Don’t feel it needed to be remade.
Beard: no way no how. I sympathize with the fellas, having to shave daily and all. But the hygiene situation with a beard has always freaked me out a bit. I know that’s probably not reasonable and I do think they look great on some people. Just not for me!
Mac n cheese vs chili: Amy’s black bean vegetarian chili with a spoonful of tart yoghurt on top. Although my mother’s Mac n cheese is incredible!
Weird: put my housekey under my bra strap when walking the dog. That’s probably not too weird, since there’s no place else to put it, but I do make sure the neighbors aren’t obviously looking!
Have a great week, Karen, hope you got in some chips and potato salad today. 🙂
Kim says
1. Whatcha wearing on your lips? Nothing today but Baume in Love yesterday, when you actually asked. 🙂
2. The fictional character you’d most want to have on your side in a zombie/alien/killer virus/government takeover apocalypse? River from Firefly/Serenity or Ripley from Alien.
3. In your estimation, what’s a beauty brand that doesn’t get its due? Oh, gosh, I don’t think I have a good answer. Maybe Lancome because they’re considered kind of “old lady”. Then again, I might be saying that since I’m an old lady! HAHA!
4. How do you feel about the Dirty Dancing remake? I’m confused about this in the same way that I was about Footloose. Hollywood is obsessed with sequels and prequels. I can handle that. But actually remaking a movie? I have never been a fan of that.
5. How do you think you’d look with a beard? I think I could make it look pretty good. It would certainly help to hide my lack of chin. I’m not sure I could stand the itch, though.
6. Chili or mac & cheese? Mac & Cheese without hesitation. There’s not much I’d choose over Mac & Cheese.
7. What’s something kinda weird you like doing? Chase the boys around (esp up the stairs) pretending I’m going to tickle them or “get them” with my pinchy fingers so, even at their age, they’ll run and laugh and squeech to get away. But, they always like to be caught. They’re not quite too cool yet. 🙂
ericca says
Whatcha wearing on your lips? Louboutin Zoulou
The fictional character you’d most want to have on your side in a zombie/alien/killer virus/government takeover apocalypse? michonne from walking dead
In your estimation, what’s a beauty brand that doesn’t get its due? there are so many African american brands that arent really mainstream but they are slowly getting their due like coloured raine or the lip bar
How do you feel about the Dirty Dancing remake? not sure have not seen it
How do you think you’d look with a beard? crazy or just like my dad
Chili or mac & cheese? mac and cheese not out of the box baked mac and cheese
What’s something kinda weird you like doing? collect my empty beauty products.
Trude says
1. Whatcha wearing on your lips?
Just some Maybelline Baby Lips in Cherry Me. It’s something I always keep in my purse because it’s just a touch of color stain, smells good and is a great moisturizing formula.
2. The fictional character you’d most want to have on your side in a zombie/alien/killer virus/government takeover apocalypse?
Harry Dresden. If you haven’t read the Dresden Files, he’s a private detective/wizard in modern-day Chicago, doing the best he can to fight evil. He’s a smart-aleck so not only would he be a great asset but he’d be entertaining! 🙂
3. In your estimation, what’s a beauty brand that doesn’t get its due?
I’m loving Shea Moisture more and more. They product line is huge compared to what most stores carry! Their wipes are the only ones gentle enough for my skin (and I’ve tried a LOT), and body and hair care line is such a great value for the quality of ingredients.
4. How do you feel about the Dirty Dancing remake?
The what now?
5. How do you think you’d look with a beard?
It might give me a more defined jawline… 😉
6. Chili or mac & cheese?
If I’m being good, chili (my husband’s is awesome). But there’s something about mac & cheese…
7. What’s something kinda weird you like doing?
Rather than meditate I let myself zone out while playing solitaire on my phone. It’s just enough to have my attention but let my mind wander at the same time.
