So…what is the Monday Poll?
Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past 10 (!) years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine. ?
1. A food that reminds you of your childhood?
I haven’t had one in years, but here it is: a butter and sugar sandwich!
Yes, I know. Terrible. But it was my favorite snack in the whole wide world.
You take an almost obscene amount of sugar, and book-end it between two pieces of soft Wonder Bread and a thick layer of butter. I’d have one every afternoon at the babysitters when I got home from elementary school (again, I know, I know).
2. What’s something you’re pretty good at?
I think I’m pretty good at writing lists, particularly lists that make me laugh.
And if they make other people laugh sometimes, then hey, bonus!
3. What’s the best damned mascara you’ve ever tried?
Well, crap, this is really hard. I’m feeling stage fright all of a sudden! So many choices… I’ve used some GREAT mascaras over the years from Chanel, Guerlain, MAC, Urban Decay…but I think I’ll go with something recent. I love Too Cool For School Dinoplatz Mascara. It separates, thickens, lengthens, holds the curl, and hello! — it has dinosaurs on the tube.
4. What’s one of your dreams?
Honestly, I’m thinking short term today. I’d just like to feel satisfied with my creative work at the end of the day. I feel like I need to mix things up, but I haven’t figured out what that means yet.
5. When was the last time you got to really veg out for an entire day, like do some serious, hardcore loafing?
I’ve gotten a few hours here and there, but I’m trying to remember the last time I had an entire day to veg out.
I think there was one day a few weeks ago. I hung out on the couch and watched a bunch of cheesy movies. The Craft is on Netflix now BTW (you’re welcome).
6. BONUS: Say something nice to the person above you in the comments.
Since there’s no one above me, I’d like to say something nice to all of you.
I love your smile. 🙂
Happy Monday!
So, I’ve been doing this thing where I mix real coffee with decaf coffee in the mornings (mostly decaf), but the ratio of real to decaf has been steadily increasing, and now if I don’t have my decaf/coffee hybrid drink my head starts to throb.
BWHAAA! Oh, coffee…I love and loathe you at the same time.
Hello, friend! I’m going to take a page from my daughter’s book today, and smile in response to whatever happens. Baby throws a tantrum? Smile. Can’t get anyone on the phone? Smile. Late for exercise class? Smile.
We’ll see how it goes. I’m hoping it goes well.
I hope you have light heart today, and smile brightly. Sending you a big hug on this lovely Monday! 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I’m pretty good at a lot of stuff but cooking is certainly a strong suit.

6. BONUS: Say something nice to the person above you in the comments.
Eleni is above me in the comments: GIRL YOGURT ON FRENCH FRIES? TELL ME MOAR! Also, I’m so upset I never got to travel to Greece when I lived in Europe! Due to my husbands work at the time, it was not a place we could travel. Tell me all the places I need to see that might be off book!
Kim says
Happy Monday! And don’t feel bad about your childhood snack. I used to eat wheat crackers with a stick of butter. Slice off a pat, put it on a cracker and eat. Like cheese but even less heart healthy! HAHA!
1. A food that reminds you of your childhood? Bologna sandwiches with French’s yellow mustard on white bread (with a little beach mixed in). My aunt would make these for us when we were visiting on vacation. We were thrilled because we NEVER had white bread in our house.
2. What’s something you’re pretty good at? Anything sports related. Also, reading comprehension which I’m stunned to discover is a rare thing. 🙁
3. What’s the best damned mascara you’ve ever tried? Oh, you’re a gal after my own heart. I always love Faux Cils but I think Dinoplatz is my favorite. And not just the tube. How about that pointed box it comes in? I may or may not have kept that.
4. What’s one of your dreams? Going to Hawaii has always been one and we’re leaving on Saturday. Woo Hoo!
5. When was the last time you got to really veg out for an entire day, like do some serious, hardcore loafing? OMG, you’re so funny. My memory is not good enough to answer that question.
6. BONUS: Say something nice to the person above you in the comments. Eleni, I’m VERY impressed that you can do the Argentine Tango. And even more impressed that you’re good at it. I’m sure I could learn it, but I don’t think I’d ever do it well. 🙂 And it reminds me of the movie Moulin Rouge (Baz Luhrmann). If you haven’t seen it, check it out!

Amy says
Karen, your sandwich isn’t that bad. My favorite food was ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise sandwiches. On soft white bread.
Katie says
1. A food that reminds you of your childhood?
Gordon’s fish sticks! I’d get them all the time because I was (am) a picky eater and they were a fool-proof meal for my mom to make me.
2. What’s something you’re pretty good at?
Three-dimensional thinking. It’s a tradeoff because I can’t memorize a formula to save my life, but let’s be honest, I can just google that, but I can do all types of 3D thinking. I’m glad I’m good at it too, because it’s been a lifesaver in my geology classes (I’m a geology major).
3. What’s the best damned mascara you’ve ever tried?
Oof, I can’t think of one in particular that stand out above the others! I love Diorshow, L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black, mascaras like that. I’ll always take recommendations, so I may have to try the dinosaur one!
4. What’s one of your dreams?
To get my PhD someday! Hopefully someday sooner rather than later. Maybe my dream should be to get into graduate school. Baby steps.
5. When was the last time you got to really veg out for an entire day, like do some serious, hardcore loafing?
So, so long ago. I’ve had appointments and midterms and meetings and labwork to do for months!
6. BONUS: Say something nice to the person above you in the comments.
Dru, I admire your ability to get rid of stuff! My whole family and I are total packrats. We’re moving houses now and finding it tough to get rid of stuff.
Ash says
1. A food that reminds you of your childhood?
Either grilled cheese or peanut butter and banana on toast!
2. What’s something you’re pretty good at?
Writing and make-up. I think those are my things.
3. What’s the best damned mascara you’ve ever tried?
I have yet to find a better mascara than Maybelline’s Lash Sensational. Every high end mascara I’ve tried has disappointed me. Just not a fan of forking over money when the ones at the drugstore seem to be better quality!
4. What’s one of your dreams?
I had a dream that a female cat I had (I don’t have a female cat!) came home pregnant and had about six kittens when she gave birth. I just remember being surrounded by them in bed and feeling so at peace. Usually my dreams are nightmares, to be honest, so this was a nice change! I think this was inspired by the fact that I have been thinking about getting another cat lately.
5. When was the last time you got to really veg out for an entire day, like do some serious, hardcore loafing?
I can’t really recall, to be honest. But it was probably when I was sick last winter and that doesn’t even count when you can’t enjoy it! I took an extra holiday after Good Friday though, so perhaps on that 4-day weekend!
6. BONUS: Say something nice to the person above you in the comments.
Amy – Obviously a nice person since she’s trying to make Karen feel better about her childhood sandwich. Haha. Aww. 🙂
Ash says
LOL! I misread #4.
One of my dreams is to be debt-free with my student loans paid off!
Gloria Yang says
1. A food that reminds you of your childhood?
Street food in Taiwan generally reminds me of childhood. It’s still my favorite!
Also, how are you not 600 lbs from eating sugar butter sandwiches?
2. What’s something you’re pretty good at?
I’m getting to be pretty darn good at brush lettering! I’ve always wanted to learn calligraphy, but material+classes are so costly. Over the holidays I saw on YouTube that people were doing “modern calligraphy” with Crayola markers. I learned the basic strokes, invested in a set of Tombow brush markers, and practice almost daily. Hopefully by summer I’ll get good enough to make customized cards for sale!
3. What’s the best damned mascara you’ve ever tried?
This Japanese one my sister found in Taiwan that’s since been discontinued. It did everything you want in a mascara, and it never clumped! Plus it was absolutely waterproof!
4. What’s one of your dreams?
To write a book or TV script. Sometimes I think of chapter ideas, but I don’t immediately sit down in front of a computer to get it out and I forget it. =\
5. When was the last time you got to really veg out for an entire day, like do some serious, hardcore loafing?
Uhh, Saturday?
6. BONUS: Say something nice to the person above you in the comments.
Amy, you made me laugh.

5. When was the last time you got to really veg out for an entire day, like do some serious, hardcore loafing? Never! Or maybe when I was little and my mom made me.
Rachel R. says
1. A food that reminds you of your childhood? My mom’s chocolate fudge buttercream frosting. Unbelievably decadent and amazing, and everyone’s cake topping of choice. Unfortunately, she has always refused to give me the recipe and will most likely take it to her grave.
2. What’s something you’re pretty good at? artsy stuff
3. What’s the best damned mascara you’ve ever tried? Tarte Gifted
4. What’s one of your dreams? To have a happy, low-stress life.
5. When was the last time you got to really veg out for an entire day, like do some serious, hardcore loafing? Last August, when hubby and I went to the coast for a few days for our anniversary.
6. BONUS: Say something nice to the person above you in the comments. Gloria, you’re so pretty and happy looking in your profile picture, you made me smile.
Fancie says
I couldn’t help but to LOL at butter and sugar sandwiches. It sounds gross yet oddly delicious when I think about it. I might have to try that one day lol
1. A food that reminds you of your childhood?
Oatmeal. My grandmother used to make it all the time for my brother and I. I despise it now that I’m older but I reminisce every time my boyfriend eats it
2. What’s something you’re pretty good at?
Figuring things out lol. I’m so determined to learn how to do certain things on my own.
3. What’s the best damned mascara you’ve ever tried?
Ooo this is a hard one because my lashes are wimpy even with mascara lol. I guess I would have to say Armani Eccentrico. I use it every time I wear mascara because it makes my bottom lashes look amazing.
4. What’s one of your dreams?
To work for myself. I’ve tried different job industries but I think being a girl boss suits me best
5. When was the last time you got to really veg out for an entire day, like do some serious, hardcore loafing?
Last week. I spent one of my off days in bed pretty much all day. It was glorious!!
6. BONUS: Say something nice to the person above you in the comments.
Amy, I don’t even like chocolate icing but you made your mom’s sound so good that I want to try it! I hope she gives you the recipe!!
Linda Halpern says
1. A food that reminds me of childhood? Probably Eggs over easy & Scrapple!
2. Something you’re pretty good at? Crafty things. Right now my passion is making soap.
3. Best damned mascara? Probably Mally.
4. What’s one of your dreams? I plan to retire this December, and make soap full time!
5. Last time you got to veg out an entire day? It’s been eons, really.
6. Say something nice about the person over you in the comments? Rachel R, you have the right idea about your dreams, to have a happy low stress life! Kudos to you! I hope you do!
Nicole - paleandfreckled says
1. A food that reminds you of your childhood?
There’s lots of them like huevos rancheros, blueberry sauce on waffles, chiles rellenos.. but raspberries will always take me back to summer in Colorado picking them out of our garden.
2. What’s something you’re pretty good at?
Learning computer stuff and troubleshooting technical issues, really not so useful these days.
3. What’s the best damned mascara you’ve ever tried?
Never really tried one that blew my mind, but I do think MAC Extended Play is awesome for lower lashes and I’m willing to pay a high end price for it which is unheard of for me.
4. What’s one of your dreams?
To have another kiddo.
5. When was the last time you got to really veg out for an entire day, like do some serious, hardcore loafing?
An entire day? Truly sometime before my first guy was born 3.5+ years ago.
6. BONUS: Say something nice to the person above you in the comments.
I’m trying to keep the boys from assaulting each other while doing this so I’ll be vague and say the poll is the one post a week I never miss and enjoy reading everyone’s answers when I have some extra time. Great community Karen has here!
Suzanne C says
1. A food that reminds you of your childhood?- Pot roast; my grandmother made amazing pot roast, with mashed potatoes and fresh white acre peas.
2. What’s something you’re pretty good at?- Making things. I’m a really good cook and pretty darn good at crafts & building things.
3. What’s the best damned mascara you’ve ever tried?- As Bono said, I still haven’t found what I’m looking for. I have chronic dry eye, which ironically means they water all the time. Waterproof mascara is a unicorn.
4. What’s one of your dreams?- To live in a place where summer doesn’t start in March. (Already so freaking hot and humid!!)
5. When was the last time you got to really veg out for an entire day, like do some serious, hardcore loafing?- Today, actually. My plans got cancelled because of a really bad storm coming through.
6. BONUS: Say something nice to the person above you in the comments.- Congratulations on your retirement, Linda H! And bravo to you for turning your passion into a business.
Lulle says
1. A food that reminds you of your childhood?
Crème de marron, it’s a sweet chestnut spread that you… spread on stuff like bread or crèpes, or, like I did a lot as a kid, stuff your face with by the spoonful. It’s veeeery sweet but somehow not sickly sweet like jam, and the chestnut makes it thick and yummy, and my favorite brand puts a bit of vanilla flavor in there and it’s sooo good. When I was a kid my mom would often buy the tube form, I would suck it all out and then cut the tubes open with scissors and lick what was left on the inside. Super dangerous cause they were metal tubes! I cut my tongue a few times… Anyways, it’s also really good on yogurt, especially full fat yogurt (because hello, fat + sugar = happy feelings…)
2. What’s something you’re pretty good at?
Reading people’s emotions/reactions. I’m a bit hyper-sensitive to non-verbal communication. I can almost always tell when someone is trying to hide their feelings or say the opposite of what they think.
3. What’s the best damned mascara you’ve ever tried?
Honestly the best one was L’Oreal Le Grand Curl, that was discontinued many years ago (why???). After that, Lancome Grandiose and Dior Diorshow Iconic.
4. What’s one of your dreams?
To be my own boss and still make enough money to be comfortable.
5. When was the last time you got to really veg out for an entire day, like do some serious, hardcore loafing?
I did that last Sunday after an early 5K race. I didn’t move from the couch all day…
6. BONUS: Say something nice to the person above you in the comments. Suzanne C: kuddos to you for being able to create things with your hands, that’s an amazing talent! I hope you have a fantastic week full of laughs, love and good food.
Amy says
Food: this is tough. There are many! Spinach pie. Mac n cheese. (Both my mother’s homemade versions.) Fudge frosting between graham crackers, which my mom put in the freezer for a few hours – the best after school snack!
Good at: Forgiving and apologizing. To others and myself.
Mascara: It’s got to be benefit They’re Real. But I’m going natural and have high hopes for Lily Lolo!
Dreams: To take the carpe firm route… shopping spree at Nordstrom! Oh, and a personal chef. 🙂
Veg out: for a whole day?!?! You’ve got to be kidding. I can’t process the concept!! I’ll go with eleven years ago, when I was pregnant. 🙂
Bonus: Lulle, I always like reading your posts. You seem to have an even, welcoming approach to life. I hope your job is treating you well this week and always, and if not, that you see good new options emerge!
Mel. B. says
1. A food that reminds you of your childhood? Today the kids in my class mentioned Captain Crunch cereal and all I could think of was my childhood. So I guess you can say that cereal.
2. What’s something you’re pretty good at? Making plans and buying gifts.
3. What’s the best damned mascara you’ve ever tried? Arbonne: It’s a long Story.
4. What’s one of your dreams? To travel to Europe again and to live/spend more time in California.
5. When was the last time you got to really veg out for an entire day, like do some serious, hardcore loafing? Last week-end. I was feeling exhausted so I did nothing.
6. BONUS: Say something nice to the person above you in the comments
Amy has great answers. I like her foods that remind her of her childhood and her choice of mascara. Also, I think forgiveness is very important!
Efrain says
1. A food that reminds you of your childhood?
Danonino (a kind of yogurt that I’m not sure if it exists in the US), it’s delicious when freezed.
2. What’s something you’re pretty good at?
At talking with others, I can easily talk with strangers.
3. What’s the best damned mascara you’ve ever tried?
CoverGirl Clump Crusher.
4. What’s one of your dreams?
Becoming a makeup artist but actually loving whatever I’m doing.
5. When was the last time you got to really veg out for an entire day, like do some serious, hardcore loafing?
Saturday and Sunday afternoon, I just watched TV series and did nothing.
6. BONUS: Say something nice to the person above you in the comments.
I think Mel B is the one above me, I think your job is really important as you’re the one who can give children the power to believe in their dreams and the importance of being good with others. Also I’m sure you’re an amazing woman.
Karen I sent you a mail, have you read it?
Holly says
Happy Monday, Karen! It was lovely here today after literally months of rain. I spent it running errands and cooking but I sure enjoyed the sun shining inthe windows.
1. When I was a kid, often our Sunday evening “meal” was popcorn made on the stove top, sliced Granny Smith apples, and Tillamook medium cheddar cheese. Still one of my very favorite combos though I often substitute Triscuits for the popcorn.
2. I am pretty good at being human Prozac and by that, I mean I’ve had many people tell me that I have a calming presence and I exude peace. In conjunction with that, I’m a very good and nonjudgmental listener.
3. I have to say the best mascara I’ve tried to date has been Urban Decay’s Perversion. I purchased a small tube back in December to try and it seems to be never-ending and not clumpy or drying out.
4. One of my dreams is to drive across the contiguous United States, visiting friends and family across the country and seeing all the cheesy tourist attractions and national parks and local museums that I possibly can. By myself.
5. A few weeks back, I was on vacation at my friends’ place on Whidbey Island. I had no schedule and they were delighted to feed me. It was glorious.
6. Yay! I get to compliment Efrain! Efrain, I love your makeup style and the fact that you wear it so boldly and proudly. It makes me happy to see men embrace makeup and show off their skills. I’m always delighted to see your photos on Instagram and keep up the great work!
Paula K says
I love the Monday Poll! Even though I don’t get to it until after midnight!
1. A food that reminds you of your childhood? Grilled Peanut Butter and Chocolate Sandwiches. Tons of butter in the skillet, Bread spread with Peter Pan Peanut Butter and topped with a broken up Hershey chocolate bar topped with another slice of bread. Cooked in GOBS of butter until everything is a beautiful golden brown and the PB & chocolate are melted into ooey gooey goodness.
2. What’s something you’re pretty good at? Procrastinating! Does that count?
3. What’s the best damned mascara you’ve ever tried? Actually, I’m not all that into mascara. Mostly because most of them bother my eyes especially during allergy season. But, right now I am loving an eyelash product and technically it’s not mascara ( I guess) Anyway it’s Benefit’s Tinted Eyelash Primer and I am really loving it.
4. What’s one of your dreams? To move out of Arkansas and back to the east coast.
5. When was the last time you got to really veg out for an entire day, like do some serious, hardcore loafing? Last weekend! Yeppers the whole weekend! I didn’t do a flippin’ thing except for lounge on the couch, watch movies and give myself a facial, a deep conditioning treatment and I broke out the LED light and gave myself a gel manicure.
6. BONUS: Say something nice to the person above you in the comments. Holly I so need you in my life!! Human Prozac I love it. I am extremely high maintenance and high strung so see a match made in heaven. I’m glad you had a good sunshiney day!!
Holly says
Aww, thanks Paula! I hope you get to move back to the east coast soon. I’ve lived my entire life in within a 40 mile radius of where I was born in northwest Washington state. I have no idea what it is to miss my hometown and I really do hope that you can get back to your happy place! 😀 <3

1. A food that reminds you of your childhood? Green chicken enchiladas and also pork pipian. And arroz con leche.
2. What’s something you’re pretty good at? Cooking and baking. Some can do one or the other or none, I can do both. Yay because I will never starve from lack of knowledge.
3. What’s the best damned mascara you’ve ever tried? YSL volume effet faux cils
4. What’s one of your dreams? Winning the lotto jackpot. Imagine the shopping carts of makeup and fragrance you can fill ?
5. When was the last time you got to really veg out for an entire day, like do some serious, hardcore loafing? A year ago while pregnant, my mom had my 1st kid for the weekend, husband was working and I watched miss fisher’s murder mysteries on Netflix. Will never happen again since mom passed in November and hub does not trust his parents with our kids but they have NEVER volunteered to watch them anyway.
6. BONUS: Holly your kid food sounds like something I love to eat now. Also I think it is admirable you would go alone across the country seeing stuff. I lived in Virginia a long time ago and wish I had gone to visit all the old settlements and plantations but didn’t because I wanted to include my video game playing husband. Once I decided I would no longer wait on him it was too late and we had left the state. But I did visit D.C. by myself.
Holly says
Your childhood food sounds amazing to me! And I’m so glad that you got to visit D.C. at least. I’m single and childless and am quite happy to be on my own because I can do what I want when I want to and not wait for other people. Which sounds selfish but it’s vital to my mental health!
