So..what is the Monday Poll?
Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past NINE (!) years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine. 🙂
1. How long are your nails right now?
Not long at all. They don’t even go to the tips of my fingertips! — and you know what, though? I like ’em that way.
I had long nails for years and years and years, but short nails are so much easier for me. They’re easier to type with, and I don’t have to worry so much about them breaking or, like, worry about accidentally scratching the baby or me poking my eye out while I’m doing my liner.
2. How old were you when you started cooking?
Oh, my goodness… I’m a little ashamed to admit this, but I didn’t start cooking until I left for college at 18 (!). And, when I started, I could not do sh*t. I couldn’t even warm up food in a pot!
No, seriously. I remember going to the dorm kitchen and trying to warm up some leftovers one day that my mom had given me. I threw them in a pot, but then I forgot about them and almost set the dorm on fire.
Yup… But I’ve gotten better since then. I can usually follow a recipe now and have it not turn out terribly.
3. Describe your hair in three words.
Long, unruly, chocolaty
4. What would/could you do if you only had 60 seconds to do your eye makeup?
See, this is where being chronically late really comes in handy. I could get quite a bit done in 60 seconds. Like, I could fill in my brows with a black pencil, curl my lashes, whack some mascara on my upper lashes (I wouldn’t even bother with my lower lashes; they’re a different beast entirely) and tightline my upper lash line with a black pencil.
And I know I can do these things in 60 seconds because I just timed it.
5. If you live in the U.S., what are you doing for Thanksgiving?
Yay! We’re having it at our house this year, so both sets of Connor’s grandparents and my brother are coming over.
I had all of these elaborate, grand plans in my head to make every single dish from scratch…but I just couldn’t deal with the turkey, so I ended up ordering a few things from a local market that makes the best turkey and sides. So we’re gonna have that, hang out, play with the baby, and that’s it. I’m really looking forward to it.
A new week…
While doing some cleaning around the house last weekend, I found a bunch of random things I thought I’d lost, like a pan of MAC Sunbasque Blush (yay!) and a crazy cat lady action figure that my brother had given me for Christmas a few years ago.
It’s going on my shelf of cat lady things. 🙂
Don’t you love finding buried treasure around the house?
I hope you get some drama-free time off this week to relax and eat some of your favorite things. What are you up to today?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

The white rim is maybe 2 millimeters.

3. Describe your hair in three words.
Red. Braided. Boring.
4. What would/could you do if you only had 60 seconds to do your eye makeup?

1. How long are your nails right now?
Not that long but a quarter inch over the tip? About as long as I can keep them with my work at a desk and the one who does all the chores!
2. How old were you when you started cooking?
Three! I made a peanut butter pie for my dad with no help other than my mom reading me the recipe. I used a preformed crust though.
3. Describe your hair in three words.
Medium length and wavy. Lots of people think I have good hair. It’s not bad but it’s been better 🙁
4. What would/could you do if you only had 60 seconds to do your eye makeup?
A wash of eye shadow and one coat of mascara if it’s 60 seconds per eye.
5. What are you doing for Thanksgiving?
Working, making a non-traditional pasta dish, and probably crying cause I’m alone. Family is all far away, all my local friends are going home for the holiday, and my hubby is deployed. I’m trying to make it special for just me though with a nice meal and a bottle of wine.
I’ve been trying to make this whole week feel special too with nice food, a massage, and a few movies at home. I’ll keep doing that throughout the holiday season.
laura says
1. How long are your nails right now? Quite short but not too short, square and pretty. I take very good care of them. They are important to me.
2. How old were you when you started cooking? 18 years old and because I had to. I do enjoy cooking now but on a daily basis it is sometimes a real chore.
3. Describe your hair in three words. Full, healthy, beautiful.
4. What would/could you do if you only had 60 seconds to do your eye makeup? A Quick wash of a medium brown shadow and mascara. Although that would take more than just a minute.

Jaclyn levy says
1. How long are your nails right now?
I just cut this them this morning so pretty short! I’m a weight lifter and lifting with long nails sucks.
2. How old were you when you started cooking?

3. Describe your hair in three words.
Brown, some gray.
4. What would/could you do if you only had 60 seconds to do your eye makeup?
That is me every day so I just later on my Maybelline mascara which makes me look like I have falsies on and call it a day!
5. What are you doing for Thanksgiving?
My mom, dad, sister, her husband, and my husband’s mom are all coming over. I’m a mixed cocktail of nerves and excitement! I want everything to be perfect and magical for everyone, especially for my young boys.
Jessica says
I always keep my nails short….. better for painting, and also you can’t give massages with long nails. 🙂
Rachel R. says
Hi, Karen. It’s so nice you’ll get to spend Thanksgiving with so much family. Nothing much going on here today. Cleaning and prepping for Thanksgiving.
1. How long are your nails right now? I don’t keep mine very long. I’m due for a trim and fill, so they’re about 1/6″ or so past my fingertips. I usually keep them just past my fingertips.
2. How old were you when you started cooking? All by myself? About 9 or 10. I helped with cooking before that, though.
3. Describe your hair in three words. Fine, thick, and straight.
4. What would/could you do if you only had 60 seconds to do your eye makeup? Primer, a shimmery nude shade all over the eye, and mascara.
5. What are you doing for Thanksgiving? Nothing too exciting. It’s usually just the four of us, but this year we’re having a friend join us. We usually just cook, eat, and chill out at home. My friend and I will probably play with makeup. 🙂
Gloria Yang says
I look forward to these weekly polls. It gets me thinking AND writing about things I normally wouldn’t!
1. How long are your nails right now?
Way too long for my comfort! They’re about 3 mm over my fingertips, which isn’t overtly long, but I’m a short-nail gal. I can’t however, find my nail clippers, so I’ve been filing them lightly every few days, hence the length.
2. How old were you when you started cooking?
I’m 31 and I still don’t cook on a regular basis. I fried my first egg at 8 or 9-years old, doctored up instant noodles by the time I was 10, and cooked an actual family meal when I was 19 or 20. I don’t take pleasure in cooking!
3. Describe your hair in three words.
Shapeless long mess
4. What would/could you do if you only had 60 seconds to do your eye makeup?
Pat on a creamy shadow with my fingers, pat on a highlight in the inner corners, line them roughly with a smudgy pencil and smudge it out, a few coats of mascara (upper lashes only), and a quick brow fill-in. I think that takes roughly 60 secs, but if I’m truly short on time, I’ll skip the liner.
5. What are you doing for Thanksgiving?
Hotpot at home with the sisters. The fur nieces and nephews will probably come over, too!
Chris25 says

5. What are you doing for Thanksgiving?: Visiting the National Museum of the American Indian. I do this every Thanksgiving.

Does everyone else see the video about the Warriors movie? My little cousin used to be obsessed with the books.

Happy Monday!
So here goes;
1. My nails are just slightly above my fingertips, although one is completely broken below. I used to be a nail biter in my teens, but went cold-turkey and they grew pretty strong.
2. I learned to cook around 12, watching my grandmother, but didn’t seriously start until after college.
3. My hair is uber-dry, going grey and too long right now.
4. I would probably put on my tinted moisturizer, mascara and gloss and be good to go in 60 seconds.
5. I am making Thanksgiving at home for just 6 people. I’ve been hosting Thanksgiving with my in-laws for the past few years. this year, thankfully, my husband and I decided to pare the meal down since we are only 6. Thank God!
We just got a new 40 inch screen, HD Smart TV and are looking forward to watching some football games. I wanted to wish you and Connor and your family a Happy First Thanksgiving together.

Hi Karen! Happy Thanksgiving!
1. How long are your nails right now? I took out a ruler so I can tell you the longest is 4 millimeters. I’m in need of a manicure but I got a pedicure yesterday so at least the toes look good!
2. How old were you when you started cooking? My Mom is a retired Home Ec teacher. I did not really start cooking (and using her recipes) until Senior year in college. That’s the year that me and hubby (then fiance) moved into our own place.
3. Describe your hair in three words. thin naturally curly
4. What would/could you do if you only had 60 seconds to do your eye makeup? Eye shadow only
5. What are you doing for Thanksgiving? My parents host Thanksgiving so we’re driving to Western Mass. We make apple crostadas (small apple pies) and homemade cranberry sauce.
Amy says
Nails: super short
Cooking: high school. I got a job with a caterer from NYC. I washed dishes and did food prep. She taught me how to use a knife, cut an onion, make roux, and how to prepare things like tapenade and pancetta. I’ve loved cooking since then, but the amount of time I have to do it has steadily declined!!
Hair: brownish, variegated, textured
60 seconds: wet my finger and swipe it in the shimmery champagne pan of my (one and only) Tom Ford quad. Do both eyelids. Darken the outer third with the same finger dipped in the quad’s taupe. Grab a blending brush, pick up the rose gold, and darken the crease. A little waterproof maybelline mascara (I forget which kind, they have so many varieties I can’t keep them straight!). Swish tinted Anastasia brow gel across my brows with a spoolie. I did this yesterday!!
Thanksgiving: go to an unorthodox church service in the morning, which I always love, totally focused on gratitude and giving. I’m cooking this year and having 15 people over!! Guests of honor are a Navajo elder who will be teaching us traditional stories, kids who will be doing music that reflects gratitude from their various cultural backgrounds, and a Euro American senior dancer who will be teaching us an English country dance.
Shannon says
1. How long are your nails right now?
They’re fairly short! I’ve been playing guitar more these days, so have been keeping my nails as short as possible – I’m clipping them once a week, which seems crazy to me.
2. How old were you when you started cooking?
Hmm.. probably in the 8-12 range? My dad cooked a lot (still cooks a lot), and he’d rope us kids in to chop things and help him with prep. I’m pretty handy in the kitchen! These days my husband is the “cook” in the family, but I have quite a few “specialties” – taco meat, pasta sauce, ginger molasses cookies, and chocolate mousse among them 🙂
3. Describe your hair in three words.
Jaw-length, messy, mullet. (I don’t really have a mullet. But it FEELS like I do.)
4. What would/could you do if you only had 60 seconds to do your eye makeup?
Liner up above my eyelashes and mascara on my top lashes. Preferably an easy-to-use liner, like the Physician’s Formula Shimmer Strips eyeliner (their Nude Trio has a taupey shade that is so pretty, easy, and stays on all day! Love.)
5. What are you doing for Thanksgiving?
My in-laws & a family friend are coming in to NYC for the holiday! The three out-of-towners got a little AirBnB spot nearby, and we’re going to do a “fancy” but non-traditional dinner there: seared duck breast, roasted Brussels sprouts (discovered a killer recipe last year), my “not-stuffing” (a stuffing-like, but gluten-free, dish I came up with last year that is suuuuper good), and some potato something – likely mashed. Oh, and chocolate mousse. I suspect that my husband and I will be in the kitchen all day, but I don’t mind one bit 🙂
Tatiana says
1. How long are your nails right now? Short. Just don’t like them long.
2. How old were you when you started cooking? Probably somewhere between 6 and 8 yrs old. Can’t remember exactly. My mom had a catering business, so I just cooked.
3. Describe your hair in three words. Short, gray, thinning.
4. What would/could you do if you only had 60 seconds to do your eye makeup? Mascara and it would take the whole 60 seconds to get it the way I like it to look.
5. What are you doing for Thanksgiving? Prepping, cooking, clearing away, doing dishes and cleaning up. I wish Dear Husband would take me out for T-Day just once.
Fran says
1. How long are your nails right now?
Very short! I inherited weak nails from my Dad. It’s barely worth even putting polish on them.
2. How old were you when you started cooking?
Five or six. I had to stand on a chair to reach the stove. Started with fried eggs (yes, my parents were nuts).
3. Describe your hair in three words.
tailbone-length, silvery-streaked, fancy braids and ponytails.
4. What would/could you do if you only had 60 seconds to do your eye makeup?
buff some NARS Eye Paint in Porto Venere from lashline to eyebrows, tightline with a Marc Jacobs fineliner, tubing mascara, brow gel. I do this fairly often when I’m in a rush! If I clean the brush I buffed with, it does take more than 60 seconds.
5. What are you doing for Thanksgiving?
Thursday my son and I are cooking up a feast at home, Saturday we bring some food (the vegetarian main dish and a third pie) to a big bash at a friend’s house. I’m glad you’re not going to wear yourself out with cooking for the whole crowd, Karen, that you’ll have energy left to enjoy your family enjoying Connor 🙂
Rachel says
1. How long are your nails right now?
They’re a medium length.
2. How old were you when you started cooking? Very late. Late 20s, early 30s.
3. Describe your hair in three words.
Dark, wavy, wild
4. What would/could you do if you only had 60 seconds to do your eye makeup? My routine in 60 is similar. Tight line with black, curl lashes, mascara only on top, brush thru with spoolie. Brows take me another min.
5. What are you doing for Thanksgiving? My hub n I r doing it here, just us. The way I wanted it.
Lulle says
1. How long are your nails right now?
Rather short, I can’t stand to let my nails grow too long, as soon as they’re past my fingertips I feel like I can’t perform basic tasks such as type on a keyboard, use my phone, or scratch myself without drawing blood.
2. How old were you when you started cooking?
Hmm not sure… I was helping at home in my teens, although I focused on easy stuff.
3. Describe your hair in three words.
Wavy, frizzy, unruly.
4. What would/could you do if you only had 60 seconds to do your eye makeup?
Mascara and concealer. I don’t think I’d have time for anything else, except maybe curl my lashes.
5. What are you doing for Thanksgiving?
Family reunion! That’s around 50 people with 10 kids under 2… It’s going to be crazy!
Happy Thanksgiving week Karen! I also did some re-organizing at home this weekend and found a ton of photos and souvenirs. Now I want to travel again!
Efrain says
1. How long are your nails right now?
I’ve just clipped them, I like them short because I feel messy when they’re long.
2. How old were you when you started cooking?
I think I was eleven the first time I baked, but I think since I was nine I started doing minor cooking like eggs or quesadillas.
3. Describe your hair in three words.
Not so curly, short, needs a new haircut. I know they weren’t three words but it was for a better description.
4. What would/could you do if you only had 60 seconds to do your eye makeup?
Since I only do my brows I’ll try to make them look as good as posible. I bought Revlon brow fantasy and I’m impressed with it.
5. What are you doing for Thanksgiving?
We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving and in fact I have an exam and a final paper on Friday.
Have a nice week Karen, I realized I didn’t answer your question about Benefit brow products and I’ve only tried the two pencil and although I liked both, I can’t justify myself spending that amount of money in this moment. However I bought a lot of skincare because it was like Black Friday this weekend in Mexico.
Susan C. says
1. How long are your nails right now?
Hmm, they’re unfortunately varied in length. Yesterday I helped a friend move furniture, and one of them snapped. Now the longest is about 3/8″ past my fingertip. (Biotin to the rescue!)
2. How old were you when you started cooking?
Geez…well, I remember frying up a Steak-Umm for a snack when I was about 17. Does that count? Guess I started in earnest when I got married at 25. I was always much more interested in baking.
3. Describe your hair in three words.
Fine, dyed, and limp!
4. What would/could you do if you only had 60 seconds to do your eye makeup?
Brow mascara, mascara-mascara, a swipe or two of a medium brown eyeshadow, a dab of a darker shade in the outer V, and quickie powder eyeliner if there’s still time!
5. What are you doing for Thanksgiving?
Enjoying time with my brother and parents. Mom is getting up in years, so I will be her official sous chef. We will all miss my sister and her husband, who live too far away to come but are far more qualified for that role!
Lauren Walsh says
1. How long are your nails right now? Just a teeny tad over my fingertips which is too long for me. I can’t do anything with long nails!
2. How old were you when you started cooking? 19ish and it was pure junk. Frozen things.
3. Describe your hair in three words.long, thick, frizzy
4. What would/could you do if you only had 60 seconds to do your eye makeup? Brow color, black eyeliner, black mascara
5. What are you doing for Thanksgiving? It’ll just be my dog and I as my husband is working in Paris. I haven’t had a real Thanksgiving in about 10 years. This year I feel a bit weepy about it as I was hoping to be back in the U.S.
