You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”
Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past NINE (!) years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- What did you have for lunch yesterday?
Dim sum! I haven’t had it in a long time, but my friend Cindy suggested it, so we went to this place in the city yesterday for lunch. If you haven’t had dim sum before, it’s kind of like tapas, but Chinese style, and they bring them to your table on little carts. There are lots of savory dishes, like different kinds of dumplings — little bite-sized things like potstickers with different wrappings and meats and vegetables and spices inside — and also some sweet treats, too, like fried, sugary dough balls. Yum.
- Do you understand this whole Pokémon GO phenomenon?
So, Pokémon is yellow, right? That yellow, cheeky-looking animated… What is he? Or she? Is she a cat? Or a squirrel? I have no idea… - Which way do you part your hair?
On the right so that my side-swept bangs swoop to the left, but I think I might be doing it wrong, because I’ve been falling asleep lately with wet hair, and when I wake up, my hair is sort of parting itself the opposite way. - Have you ever attended Comic-Con?
No, but I’ve wanted to for years. I actually got tickets to San Diego Comic-Con in 2008, I think it was, but something came up. I don’t even remember what it was now, but I ended up not being able to go.One of these days…
- Pigtails on adults: a do or a don’t?
Ooh! I think they’re really cute, but they have to be low pigtails… When they’re too high, I think they look too Baby Spice (for me). - When there’s something strange in the neighborhood, who you gonna call?
Um…the Ghostbusters? Really, though, if there was a ghost in my house, I’d call a realtor (and a priest).Yeah, I saw Exorcist. I know where this is headed. I’m NOT messing around.
Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!
1. What did you have for lunch yesterday?
2. Do you understand this whole Pokémon GO phenomenon?
3. Which way do you part your hair?

Good morning and happy Monday! I’m a sleepy girl today, friend… I didn’t get any sleep last night. I just couldn’t turn off my brain. Does that ever happen to you?
What do you have going on this week?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Tulipthecat says
1. What did you have for lunch yesterday?
A really great el pastor burritto. Yum….I want another one!

Yes. I love pigtails but not high ones.
6. When there’s something strange in the neighborhood, who you gonna call?
My boyfriend. He likes ghosts and things.
Where in the city did you go for Dim Sum?
Karen says
Hi! We went to Dragon Beaux on Geary. Got there around 9:45 before it opened at 10 and there was already a long line to get in! You should go sometime, but come early. The food is great and so satisfying.
Do you know of any good dim sum places out in the Fremont/Newark/Union City/Hayward area?
Tulipthecat says
My favorite is Mayflower next to the Marina market in Union City. But I heard that House of Dumpling is really good too but I haven’t been but it’s on my list of places to go. I love dim sum!!!!
Karen says
I’ve been to House of Dumplings and it’s pretty good. They have a daikon salad that’s to die for. Their steamed buns and soup dumplings have been hit or miss. I’ve been a few times with my family and have always enjoyed it! The restaurant is super small, though, so expect a wait unless you get there early.
Leah G. says
1. What did you have for lunch yesterday? Cobb Salad from my lovely new gym. I’m still not brave enough to go down the waterslide there!
2. Do you understand this whole Pokémon GO phenomenon? nope. Car accidents from playing a game? Nope and nope. Plus, it shares your google account info.
3. Which way do you part your hair? My hair is usually more on the left side.
4. Have you ever attended Comic-Con? No but I would go.
5. Pigtails on adults: a do or a don’t? don’t but the two braids is cute.
6. When there’s something strange in the neighborhood, who you gonna call? One of my neighbors for sure. We are all great friends.
Karen says
Hi Leah,
Two braids are super cute, especially if they’re messy! I’m also a big fan of the fish tail braid; how you ever done those before?
Happy Monday to you!
Leah G. says
I don’t do braids often since my hair is super curly. Typically I’ll just do one regular braid. 🙂
Happy Monday Karen!
Janet Shepherd says
1. What did you have for lunch yesterday?
I honestly don’t remember – but probably something revolving around toast, as I’ve been getting a bit queasy around lunchtimes & toast is about the only thing I can deal with.
2. Do you understand this whole Pokémon GO phenomenon?
I’ve toyed with the idea of getting the app, but I haven’t yet. I think it sounds awesome, even though I didn’t play the older Pokemon games in the 90’s/00’s.
3. Which way do you part your hair?
I have curly hair, so it kind does its own thing, but it usually ends up roughly parted on the left.
4. Have you ever attended Comic-Con?
Nope, I’d love to go to a con, my hubs & I are pretty huge nerds lol. There are some great cons here in Australia, but being a huge nerd I get very anxious in crowds & I haven’t been brave enough to tackle the convention crowds.
5. Pigtails on adults: a do or a don’t? I’m kind of meh about them, but def only low pigtails.
6. When there’s something strange in the neighborhood, who you gonna call?
Ghostbusters for sure, esp if their receptionist is the gorgeous Chris Hemsworth lol.
Hey Karen, how is your adorable baby girl? Pregnancy is kind of kicking my butt right now, I think I need to go see my gp as I’ve had quite strong dizziness & a couple of other slightly concerning side effects.
But we have had the results of our NIPT (dna) test back, which were all clear for the chromosomal abnormalities they test for, and we know the gender of our baby! I’m having a baby girl of my own! I’m so excited ?
Karen says
Hi Janet,
Ahh, I remember those days. It started happening for me around this time last year. I remember El Hub and I went to an Italian restaurant (my favorite type of food!) for our wedding anniversary, and as I was looking over the menu everything sounded absolutely disgusting. Be prepared for your sense of smell to go into overdrive. Last summer I could tell which neighbor was cooking what, and who was doing laundry and what type of laundry detergent. I’d go for walks, and if was garbage day and the cans were still outside, I’d be overwhelmed from the scent of them. I pretty much hated everything and would only eat frozen waffles with peanut butter.
Congrats on the results of your test! We jumped for joy in our living room when we got the results and found out that we were having a girl. I’m so, so happy for you. 🙂
If you have any questions let me know. I love talking about babies, and it’s all so fresh in my mind. When is your due date, by the way?
Janet Shepherd says
It’s weird, because I coasted through my first trimester with almost no nausea, but I’m 15 weeks now & ive just started getting a bit the last week or so.
My due date is the 9th January 2017. I’d love to know what baby ‘stuff’ you found the most invaluable, be it furniture, or clothing, or even something like wipes lol. I know one lady here who has just had a baby, but other than her all my friends finished having babies years ago so it’s trickier to get their advice.
Jennifer Osborn says
I went to bed early last night but I woke up at 3 a.m. with a hot flash and couldn’t get back to sleep until 5. So I be dragging today. I may have to get two more shots of espresso.
There is no place in my rural corner of Maine to get dim sum and I’m totally jelly.
1. What did you have for lunch yesterday? I had a grilled Italian sausage sandwich on ciabatta. It was so, so, so good. We have a really great source of Italian sausage made in Boston.
2. Do you understand this whole Pokémon GO phenomenon? No. I just want my teenage son to stay away from it.
3. Which way do you part your hair? I’ve been a left side part for eons. When I was really little I parted it down the middle and looked like a giant dork. I still harbor resentment about it. I think my mom should have told me there were other ways of parting hair.
4. Have you ever attended Comic-Con? No.
5. Pigtails on adults: a do or a don’t? Only if they are low pigtails. Sometimes, I do it at home when I’m working outside and my hair is longish. But, it also depends on the outfit. I think it can totally veer too much into Chrissy Somer’s territory. Not that there’s anything wrong with that but it’s not for me. At age 47.
6. When there’s something strange in the neighborhood, who you gonna call? Ghostbusters, of course, the female crew. I haven’t seen it yet.
Lulle says
1. What did you have for lunch yesterday?
Sunny side up eggs, a rice salad (think pasta salad, and replace pasta with rice – very common in France), cantaloupe.
I love dim sum, my favorite thing is soup dumplings!
2. Do you understand this whole Pokémon GO phenomenon?
Nope. Pokemons were way after my time, so it’s not my generation. I understand the appeal of an augmented reality game, but players need to realize they’re still in the real world: two people fell off a cliff in San Diego county a few days ago because they were too distracted by the game. It’s also kind of weird to see all these people outside walking around looking at their phone and not reacting or talking. My hubby says it’s the zombie apocalypse!
3. Which way do you part your hair?
On the left.
4. Have you ever attended Comic-Con?
No, I don’t think I’m a hard-core fan of pop culture enough to justify getting a ticket. Plus the long lines are not for me. Living in San Diego I know a lot people who go and even some who volunteer there. We also usually go downtown during the convention to see the street fun!
5. Pigtails on adults: a do or a don’t?
Don’t.
6. When there’s something strange in the neighborhood, who you gonna call?
I think I might run around in circles screaming?

2. Do you understand this whole Pokémon GO phenomenon? Sort of. I haven’t been playing though.
3. Which way do you part your hair? Right side.
4. Have you ever attended Comic-Con? No, but my local mall put on a local version the other weekend. It was very small.
5. Pigtails on adults: a do or a don’t? they work for some people but not on me. I think they looked cute on Melissa McCarthy as Sookie on Gilmore Girls.
6. When there’s something strange in the neighborhood, who you gonna call? Ghostbusters, I guess. 🙂
Mel. B. says
1. What did you have for lunch yesterday? Tomato Pizza with cheese.
2. Do you understand this whole Pokémon GO phenomenon? Not at all. I do know it was a fun card game in the late nineties.
3. Which way do you part your hair? Middle always.
4. Have you ever attended Comic-Con? No, I haven’t attended this.
5. Pigtails on adults: a do or a don’t? I could go either way. Maybe when you are at home by yourself.
6. When there’s something strange in the neighborhood, who you gonna call? 911
Icequeen81.ma says
1. What did you have for lunch yesterday?

No, not really
3. Which way do you part your hair?
left side , if i don’t forget to do so

Shannon says
1. What did you have for lunch yesterday?

2. Do you understand this whole Pokémon GO phenomenon?
I… I think so? I don’t play it, but I feel like I have a clue about how people do 🙂
3. Which way do you part your hair?
On my left, so it’s side-swoopy. Every once in a while I’ll get the bug to switch to the other side…
4. Have you ever attended Comic-Con?
No, but I want to someday! I have some friends who go to the one in Seattle – I think that would be super fun.
5. Pigtails on adults: a do or a don’t?
Sure, if they’re done right! In my opinion they tend to work better with short hair than with long hair. But I’m all for people doing their own thing!
6. When there’s something strange in the neighborhood, who you gonna call?
Probably my sister, lol. I’ve never watched the original ghostbusters! It’s now on my list, because I reallllly want to see the reboot… but feel like I need to pay homage first 🙂
I feel like I haven’t been able to turn off my brain for like, the last week! I have an EP release show in NYC coming up on Thursday, and it’s alllll I’m thinking about. I’m bouncing from excited to stressed to worried to excited again… haha. Trying to remember to relax and smile and enjoy myself in the midst of all the things I feel like I need to do!
Linnea says
1. What did you have for lunch yesterday?
Cheese & Crackers! needed something quick as it was a bit late for lunch, and I needed to have something NOW
2. Do you understand this whole Pokémon GO phenomenon?
I am definitely part of the nerd crew, but I was a little too old for pokemon craze when it originally happened. So yes? and no?
3. Which way do you part your hair?
Larger section to the right. Dunno why, it just likes it there.
4. Have you ever attended Comic-Con?
No. Every year I want to go. I also have a lot of friends that actually have booths there so it should encourage me, but I’m just never on the ball enough.
5. Pigtails on adults: a do or a don’t? Yes, but they have to be used carefully haha!
6. When there’s something strange in the neighborhood, who you gonna call? Probably the city? Police? no? I guess the Ghostbusters then!

Just flew in from Toronto yesterday so I’m pooped but I MADE IT to this week’s Monday poll. Yay 🙂
1. What did you have for lunch yesterday?
I was waiting for a plane in the Toronto airport and we managed to get free passes to a lounge. I had some seasoned pasta and zucchini with beef meatballs at the lounge. It was delish.
2. Do you understand this whole Pokémon GO phenomenon?
I know about Pokemon having played the Gameboy version when I was younger but I don’t know what Pokemon Go is about…
3. Which way do you part your hair?
Most times to the left because of my stubborn cowlick. But I’m trying to persuade my hair to part right these days (with the help of a blowdryer).
4. Have you ever attended Comic-Con?
No but I really want to!! It’ll be a great excuse to see the West Coast of the USA.
5. Pigtails on adults: a do or a don’t?
I always do pigtails because buns make me look matronly and ponytails give me a headache (I’ve got thick hair). Two low ones though.
6. When there’s something strange in the neighborhood, who you gonna call?
Probably my mom. I’ll take pictures and send them to my family in Singapore. 😛
Elena says
1. What did you have for lunch yesterday?
I had red Robin for lunch. It was pretty meh but I was starving after an intense workout and motorcycle meetup I attended with my bf.
2. Do you understand this whole Pokémon GO phenomenon?
Yes!! Love it. Me and my bf play together! I know some people think it is silly but have met more cool strangers and had a lot more pleasant social interactions with strangers for the first time in a long time! It’s a great conversation starter and I actually know people going out and walking more and whatnot.
3. Which way do you part your hair?
I usually do a side part. I think once my bangs grow out a little more I can do a center part.
4. Have you ever attended Comic-Con?
No! I travel to San Diego at least once a year. I want to go so bad cause it’s such a big event!! It looks like so much fun and there are always exclusive products and merchandise that are only at SDCC. Maybe next year!
5. Pigtails on adults: a do or a don’t?
I would say a don’t . But I’m sure someone could pull it off. I couldn’t. Lol.
6. When there’s something strange in the neighborhood, who you gonna call?
Ghostbusters!!
Efrain says
1. What did you have for lunch yesterday?
Pozole it’s a traditional Mexican dish, it’s like a soup with corn, pork or chicken and you add lettuce, radish, onions, lime juice and some spices.
2. Do you understand this whole Pokémon GO phenomenon?
I think it’s a little out of control but then I think that people get obsessed with everything in not a really healthy way e.g. The Kardashians. It isn’t available here in Mexico so I have to wait.
However you’ve just broken my heart, I grew with Pokemon, when the first season aired I was five years old so I’m a fan and knowing you don’t recognize Pikachu it’s heartbreaking.
3. Which way do you part your hair?
I don’t part my hair when it’s curly but if I straighten it I do it to the left.
4. Have you ever attended Comic-Con?
I haven’t but I would love to.
5. Pigtails on adults: a do or a don’t?
I like the low ones but the high ones look awkward.
6. When there’s something strange in the neighborhood, who you gonna call?
A priest and a witch, you have to prevent all the possibilities.
Kate & Zena says
Hi Karen, Tabby Cat and Connor Claire! Long time with no speaking! I’m getting over a lupus flare. Hopefully I’ll be back to fighting shape for my lesson and horse show on Friday!
1. What did you have for lunch yesterday?
Um, I had Lay’s Potato Chips as I went to go see The Secret Life of Pets with my parents!
2. Do you understand this whole Pokémon GO phenomenon?
Not really. I was part of the original Pokemon generation and I have kind of outgrown it. Minions, on the other hand…
3. Which way do you part your hair?
My hair parts itself (unless I want to part it) but it’s slightly off center left part. Sometimes it flips to the right. Sometimes it’s down the middle. My hair is very silly.
4. Have you ever attended Comic-Con?
No, I haven’t! I would like to attend a con, but then my social anxiety overcomes me and I’m all, “NOOOOOOOOOO!”
5. Pigtails on adults: a do or a don’t?
Considering I wear them, especially on horseback riding days and massage days: yes.
6. When there’s something strange in the neighborhood, who you gonna call?
First, you holler for my dad so he goes all back-to-his-Army days patrol self (it’s actually very, very scary, even for us family members used to him)…then the police.
Erin says
1. What did you have for lunch yesterday?
I had Korean BBQ!
2. Do you understand this whole Pokémon GO phenomenon?
Yes, but I’m not playing it right now. Between work and medical complications, it’s a nonstarter.
3. Which way do you part your hair?
It parts at 3 points naturally. I rarely make it choose but when I do it stays that way with little encouragement.
4. Have you ever attended Comic-Con?
Nope.
5. Pigtails on adults: a do or a don’t?
I like them, it depends on the whole look. I often do it for the gym though.
6. When there’s something strange in the neighborhood, who you gonna call?
Of course you want to say Ghostbusters, but right now, the MP’s.
Susan C. says
1. What did you have for lunch yesterday?
A pumpernickel “everything” bagel, toasted and topped with Temptee cream cheese, Zima tomatoes and cracked pepper…it’s the perfect combo for me, and if any element is missing I refuse to eat it!
2. Do you understand this whole Pokémon GO phenomenon?
Who can resist the power of the Pikachu?
3. Which way do you part your hair?
On the right, with bangs sideswept left. Every once in a while I switch the part, but that usually involves having to touch up my roots first, and who has time for that?
4. Have you ever attended Comic-Con?
YES! Wizard World Philly (2015) was a blast. No, I didn’t cosplay (took the train in) but once I saw the Witch King of Angmar it was ON. He scares the heck out of me (despite my having watched LOTR, oh, sixteen or so times) but he obligingly let me snap a photo. Spent the whole con chasing Team Rocket, hanging out with Blade the Vampire Hunter and deleting all the old photos off my phone so I could snap more pics. (Took a selfie with Rocket Racoon! That alone was worth the price of admission!)
If you have any geeky tendencies at all, please do yourself a favor and go. You won’t regret it!
5. Pigtails on adults: a do or a don’t?
All the yes…if you can pull off the sassy, go for it!!

2. Do you understand this whole Pokémon GO phenomenon? YES! I am a 41 year old woman that plays it! It’s fun, it really is. I don’t walk out in front of cars though.
3. Which way do you part your hair? On the right and my bangs swoop to the left. On day old hair, I part it in the middle.
4. Have you ever attended Comic-Con? No, but I have some friends that are going. I want to go and sit in on the “Supernatural” panel! Maybe next year!
5. Pigtails on adults: a do or a don’t? Low, a do! Points for low and braided, my favorite!
6. When there’s something strange in the neighborhood, who you gonna call? My town has a ghost society, for reals, I’d look them up on Facebook and send them a message for help!
Kim says
Happy Tuesday! 🙂
1. What did you have for lunch yesterday? Some Veggie Thins crackers.
2. Do you understand this whole Pokémon GO phenomenon? I understand it but have no interest, myself (and would not walk off a cliff playing it). The yellow one is Pikachu and all the little fighting monsters that live in balls are called Pokemon. My boys used to be into the game/cards and now they’re begging for phones so they can play Pokemon Go. Thanks, Nintendo. HAHA!
3. Which way do you part your hair? Same as you, on my right.
4. Have you ever attended Comic-Con? I’ve only been to the one in Montreal, not the biggie in San Diego!
5. Pigtails on adults: a do or a don’t? Not for me but I’m sure it’s cute on others, particularly Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. 🙂
6. When there’s something strange in the neighborhood, who you gonna call? I’m with you – realtor and then the fire dept for when we burn that mothah down!
Diane says
1. Churrasco–Brazilian Steak–with Limeade of course!
2. No, never been interested in it.
3. Diagonally, left to right, to avoid cowlicks.
4. No, but I like looking at the Cosplay picks on line–they are so creative!
5. Yes, but low ones. And braids are always okay.
6. The Winchester brothers (Supernatural). 🙂
