You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”
Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past eight (!) years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- When was the last time you went all out with your makeup?
I think it’s been about two weeks… Or has it been three? Funny how time gets all mushy when you’re doing hard time in baby jail.I did a bright blue lid with warm browns in the crease. Foundation, concealer, brows, lashes and lips (frame the face!). It was the most elaborate eye makeup I’d worn since pre-Connor.
I didn’t recognize myself in the mirror either. I was like, that can’t be me because she doesn’t look like a freshly turned zombie (it was me though).
- What was the last goofy thing you did?
Dude! Every single day of my life is a series of goofy things strewn together one after another! The last one involved a song which I sang to Connor while I changed her diaper. It included various silly references to poop. - When was the last time you checked a social network, and which one was it?
It was Facebook about 20 minutes ago. I watched a video about how people don’t interact with each other as much anymore due to smartphones…and then I thought about how funny it would be to be watching this video on my phone in a public place while not interacting with anybody. 🙂 - How do you feel about full-coverage foundation?
Different now than I did a few months ago. I think full coverage looks great in photographs, and I like to wear full coverage for pics, but it’s a lot of look for everyday life. At least, lately for me, but this has been a relatively recent development. I haven’t been wearing a lot of makeup lately, and I’ve started getting accustomed to seeing myself without it.Even so, in the times I have put on a little extra makeup over the past few weeks, I felt like I was wearing a ton.
Does that make any sense at all?
Anyway, I go through phases like this every once in a while. They usually last a few months, and then I’m back to doing the full-coverage thing.
- Should you trust your instincts?
Yes, always! Because whenever my gut is telling me to do something, or not do something, and I don’t go with my gut, it always comes back to bite me in the butt.Your gut knows… That’s all I’m saying.
Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!
1. When was the last time you went all out with your makeup?
2. What was the last goofy thing you did?
3. When was the last time you checked an online social network and which one was it?
4. How do you feel about full-coverage foundation?
5. Should you trust your instincts?
Have a wonderful week, my friend. May fortune smile upon you.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

1. When was the last time you went all out with your makeup? Oh goodness – can’t even remember. The pregnancy exhaustion limits my makeup use drastically. I can count the times I have touched my makeup in the last 3 months on one hand…
2. What was the last goofy thing you did? This weekend – an internal joke between me and the hubby ^^
3. When was the last time you checked an online social network and which one was it? Facebook a few minutes ago. Just random checking since I was bored
4. How do you feel about full-coverage foundation? Not for me – I am more for just bb-cream or just a tiny bit of concealer where it is needed
5. Should you trust your instincts? Yes!
Happy monday!
Karen says
Hi Petra,
Congratulations on your pregnancy! How many months are you?
Petra says
Thank you! I just hope that my little one will be half as lovely as beautiful baby Connor Claire – such o lovely name for such a sweet girl <3
Just easing out of the first trimester – they say its gonna get better soon – until the weight kicks in at least, haha!
I am just glad I can get my makeup fixes by reading MBB 😀
Erin says
1. When was the last time you went all out with your makeup?
New years eve!
2. What was the last goofy thing you did?
A complete stranger asked me if she could take a picture of me so I posed as awkwardly as I could including making a hideous face.
3. When was the last time you checked an online social network and which one was it?
I check my feeds regularly, but I think it was Instagram.
4. How do you feel about full-coverage foundation?
I love all levels of foundation coverage. I think unless you have perfect skin you need to have at least one in your collection for events or photography.
5. Should you trust your instincts?
I’m torn because my instincts for things on some subjects are bad. Others spot on. I’m old enough to what areas I suck at though.
Karen says
Thanks for filing out the poll, Erin! Have a great week.
Lulle says
1. When was the last time you went all out with your makeup?
A couple weeks ago for my birthday dinner. Otherwise I’ve going very light on the eyes lately (a wash of cream shadow, or a very nude look using 2-3 shades). That time was the only one recently when I did a complex eye look that required real blending.
2. What was the last goofy thing you did?
Hmmm… usually I do goofy stuff around my cat, so that was probably being silly with him yesterday.
3. When was the last time you checked an online social network and which one was it?
A few minutes ago I checked Twitter. I think that video you watched is holding some truth: we are really all very absorbed in stuff that’s going on online and it affects real life relationships. I’m trying to fight against it but it’s very hard.
4. How do you feel about full-coverage foundation?
If I could find one that does not look dry or cakey, ever, I’d be a happy camper. I love that they conceal my redness and acne scars completely but everything I’ve tried so far tends to emphasize the texture of my skin and that’s quite unflattering.
5. Should you trust your instincts?
Oh hell yeah. My instincts are usually on point, especially about people.
Hope you have a great week Karen! We’re in the middle of May Gray here and every single morning is gloomy :/ On the job hunt front, I have a very good prospect. Keeping all fingers, toes and paws crossed!
Karen says
Happy belated birthday, Lulle! Sorry for the late well-wishes; I’ve been so out of it lately! I hope you had a wonderful birthday.
I hope that your job prospect comes through. What’s it for?
Nivedita says
This one was an interesting post Karen.
1. When was the last time you went all out with your makeup?
It was yesterday. I usually take time to do makeup. But when I don;t I don’t. It’s all or null.
2. What was the last goofy thing you did?
An SA at a makeup cubicle was giving me a wrong shade of foundation. It was way lighter and he was explaining that ‘we wear makeup to look lighter and brighter’. I was thinking ” Kill me!”. I did not want to say anything, but instead very politely said, ” I don’t do that at all! I am sorry. ”
3. When was the last time you checked an online social network and which one was it?
Just a few hours ago, Instagram watching cats.
4. How do you feel about full-coverage foundation?
My skin is extremely blemished and I wouldn’t mind wearing everyday. But, I would go berserk while blending.
5. Should you trust your instincts?
Completely. Every time I had a hunch and I forced myself into going with reason pondering that my gut feeling was absurd, I landed in soup. I have now learned to go with it.
Karen says
Thanks for filing out the poll, Nivedita! Have a great week.
Jaclyn levy says
1. This morning. Of course my version of “all out” is probably way less than yours! I wore liquid foundation, powder, cat eye, filled in my brows, lip liner+my new hella amazing pink lipstick by ELF, and BLUSH which I haven’t worn in months. Where was I going with my full face? The grocery store with my 2 kids. 😀 I put makeup on for me and no one else.
2. Danced in person to the song that was playing in my head. My 3yo looked at me in utter confusion and horror.
3. 2 seconds ago. Kakao. What can I say, I’m a millennial SAHM. No shame in my game.
4. Looks amazing on others who know how to do it. Also looks expensive which is the barrier for me trying it. I don’t mind my skin looking like skin.
5. I’m going to be the crazy one and say no, not always. My instincts are often judgemental and racist and I have to use my brain to counteract my gut with rationalism. Example: once I was walking through my neighborhood when I saw the person on the sidewalk walking toward me was a black teen in a hoodie. My instincts freaked out a bit but my brain was like, shut up gut, you’re totally safe, that kid is not a criminal, stop overreacting. Then my gut was like, OK cool and gave the boy a smile as he walked by.
Karen says
OK, so, now I have to know the name of your hella amazing lipstick from ELF! Spill the beans, girl!
Jaclyn levy says
Ravishing Rose! It’s the neutral pink I’ve been searching for for months. I’m obsessed. If I could post a pic here of it I would! And you can’t beat the $3 price. Layered on top of my pink lip liner it lasted a really long time. <3
Karen says
Thanks for the rec. The Target near my house sells ELF so I’ll see if I can find it. Happy Tuesday to you!
Leah G. says
1. When was the last time you went all out with your makeup? I can’t remember but I’ve noticed when I wear silver eye shadow a lot of people notice. 🙂
2. What was the last goofy thing you did? We sing to the cat on a regular basis.
3. When was the last time you checked an online social network and which one was it? 20 minutes ago or so.
4. How do you feel about full-coverage foundation? It’s so not me. I do powder over my moisturizer and bronzer in the summer.
5. Should you trust your instincts? Absolutely! Always trust your gut feelings.
Karen says
Hi Leah,
I think all cats deserve songs on the regular. 🙂 We sing songs to Tabs all the time, lol!
Happy Tuesday!
Leah G. says
Yes, tabby cats deserve a song in their day!
🙂
Karen says
He’s sitting on my desk as I type this…I think it’s time to sing him a song, LOL!
ericca says
1. When was the last time you went all out with your makeup? A month ago. My friend and I go out to fancy dinners, so I pile it on.
2. What was the last goofy thing you did? think that going to a podiatrist appointment wouldn’t involve a anesthetic. I cried immediately when he pulled that needle out.
3. When was the last time you checked an online social network and which one was it? like this am. ig is a drug.
4. How do you feel about full-coverage foundation? full coverage is great for people who like it. I just wearing makeup with medium coverage and it felt weird. I do like it more than sheer coverage. for some reason I feel like its for my teenage /college coverage
5. Should you trust your instincts? always.
Karen says
Getting a shot is never fun (I hate needles!). What happened to your foot? I hope you’re going to be OK!
ericca says
I had an ingrown toe nail, the nail is too big for my nail bed. how did this happen after 32 years of having this toe that I would have the issue before? nope. they took the whole piece of my nail off. uggh and ewww.
Karen says
Ouch! It sounds painful. 🙁 I hope you heal quickly and that you’re back to 100% soon!
Ericca says
Thank you
Stephanie Smith says
1. When was the last time you went all out with your makeup? Oh it’s been a while, usually only for date nights.
2. What was the last goofy thing you did? All day errrrrry day! This morning as I was leaving my 4th grader’s classroom, I jokingly glared at the class and told them they had better be good, because the teacher told them that if they were good that this would be the last week of homework.
3. When was the last time you checked an online social network and which one was it? Facebook, I got to the link for this poll on it. This poll is my favorite part of Monday’s!
4. How do you feel about full-coverage foundation? Hate it. Hate hate hate! I feel like women are trying to hide behind it. But if someone likes it, then they should wear it! It’s just not for me.
5. Should you trust your instincts? Always! Never second guess your gut. I have always regretted not following my gut.
Karen says
Hi Stephanie!
It makes me so happy to hear that the poll is your favorite part of your Monday because it’s mine too. 🙂
When do the kids finish school?
Rachel R. says
1. When was the last time you went all out with your makeup? Yesterday. I go all out with my makeup nearly every day.
2. What was the last goofy thing you did? I’m pretty constantly goofy. Last night was probably the last time, and it involved putting my son in a headlock.
3. When was the last time you checked an online social network and which one was it? Facebook, yesterday evening.
4. How do you feel about full-coverage foundation? It’s great for photos or when my skin is really bad. Overall, it’s not my favorite, because it also can feel very heavy and mask-like.
5. Should you trust your instincts? Yes. Like you, whenever I don’t, I end up regretting it.
Karen says
Hi Rachel!
I love, LOVE that you go all out with your makeup on a daily basis. I think that’s awesome. Now you’re making me want to put on some false lashes, LOL! Maybe I’ll pop on some to go with the winged liner I plan to wear (baby steps). What makeup look are ya wearing today? I hope it involves something bright and colorful. 🙂
Rachel R. says
Usually I am all bright and “out there,” but the last couple days I’ve been fairly restrained. Yesterday, my makeup challenge group’s assignment was Meghan Trainor, so pretty neutral. Today I had meetings with government agencies, and had an acne attack, so smokey eye courtesy of The Balm’s Nude Dude and nude lipstick (zits near the lips 🙁 ).
Sunday I went bright: Ardency Inn Orchid and Royal, UD Bittersweet Blush, and Hard Candy Fierce Effects Lipstick in Newly Berried. I’ll be back to my old inappropriate self tomorrow, most likely.
Chelsea says
1. When was the last time you went all out with your makeup?
Hmmm, a burlesque show a few months ago?
2. What was the last goofy thing you did?
I took Quincy to go see the big Flemish Giant bunnies that live at the vet when I took him to be boarded.
3. When was the last time you checked an online social network and which one was it?
Facebook a few minutes ago! I’m stuck at the airport, my flight was delayed.
4. How do you feel about full-coverage foundation?
I don’t like it on me. I’m very freckly and don’t think it’s flattering.
5. Should you trust your instincts?
Sometimes!
Karen says
Hi Chelsea,
Hopefully by the time you read this you’ll have made it to your destination. You guys are headed to Florida, right? Have fun on your vacation and don’t forget to wear sunscreen!
Chelsea says
We’re safe in our hotel in Orlando! We did carry on only, but there’s a Walgreen’s about a 7 minute walk away, so I stopped there for sunscreen, a razor, and some snacks. My husband is about as fair as me (son of a redhead with a red beard, light skin, blue eyes) so it’s a must!
Karen says
Yay, woo hoo for vacation! Glad you made it there safely. What are you guys up to today?
Chelsea says
We slept in a bit, but we’ll probably head to Universal Studios. We were able to buy two days and get two free! Gotta go drink all the butterbeer and go to Hogwarts!
Karen says
Nice! That gives you so much time to do lots of exploring, which is great (I hate it when it feels like you have to pack in every single thing in a short amount of time). Take lots of pictures!
Will you guys be headed to the beach at all?
Lupe Hernandez says
1. When was the last time you went all out with your makeup?
About three weeks ago for my friend’s party. I used a new Stila palette that has a rusty orange in it. There was also a contour and high light. I used Kat Von D’s Lolita. I love that color.
2. What was the last goofy thing you did?
Asking my dog this morning why she was outside far longer than usual.
3. When was the last time you checked an online social network and which one was it?
Twitter about 10 mins ago.
4. How do you feel about full-coverage foundation?
I love it! Marc Jacobs Remarcable is my current favorite. I don’t wear full coverage all the time though.
5. Should you trust your instincts?
Hmm sometimes.
Karen says
Hi Lupe,
LOL, I talk to my cat all the time. You’re not alone! 🙂 What is your dog’s name and how long have you had him/her?
Kalli says
1. When was the last time you went all out with your makeup?
This weekend! I’m trying to figure out the best way to film makeup tutorials/get-ready-with-me’s with my limited resources. I tried for a second time on Saturday and about halfway through my look, I noticed my camera had stopped recording and it had been stopped for a while (I tried a third time on Sunday and I think it worked!) Anyway, I finished the look just for fun and I loved it! Bronze-y eye with a wing and a pop of peacock blue on the lower lash line (I used Coconut from ColourPop, it’s so gorgeous) with coral blush and a bronzey-pink gloss.
2. What was the last goofy thing you did?
I felt kinda goofy sitting at my dining room table in front of the window with my camera and all my makeup! I live in a first floor apartment and I think my neighbor across the way was wondering what I was doing 😀
3. When was the last time you checked an online social network and which one was it?
About 10 minutes ago! I usually do Facebook>Instagram>Twitter. Once I’m home and on WiFi, I’ll add in SnapChat.
4. How do you feel about full-coverage foundation?
I like the idea of it and I like it on other people. I always think I want it for myself, but then once it’s on my face it feels too heavy and cakey. I’m more of a medium coverage gal myself. L’Oreal True Match Lumi, MAC Matchmaster and UD Naked are my favorites.
5. Should you trust your instincts?
YES! Always, because they’re usually right.
Karen says
Hi Kalli,
Oh, I’ve had the camera stop during the middle of recording and it suuuucks! I feel ya. I make it a habit to check every few minutes to make sure that I see the little red dot.
Hope you’re having fun filming! What look are you going to try next?
Tatiana says
1. When was the last time you went all out with your makeup? Mmm, about a month ago? I’m pretty set in my ways. Tinted moisture, brows, mascara, maybe one color shadow and lips is my day to day routine.
2. What was the last goofy thing you did? Today in the gym. Trainer said to do X,Y and then Z. I did Y, Z, tripped and then X. I’m goofy on a day to day basis.
3. When was the last time you checked an online social network and which one was it? A few minutes ago. Facebook. I only check Twitter once every other week and don’t bother with anything else.
4. How do you feel about full-coverage foundation? I used to love it. But then I started using BB creams from Korea and Armani’s CC cream and now I just use NARS tinted moisture. I’d rather my skin look like skin, no matter how imperfect.
5. Should you trust your instincts? Most definitely. Any time I didn’t follow my gut it came back to bite me in a big way. I never ignore my gut feeling now.
Karen says
Hi Tatiana,
Your day to day routine sounds like mine these days. 🙂 (And I can relate to your take on skin.) Btw, what did you think of that CC Cream by Armani? Did you like it?
P.S. Props to you for getting to the gym, girl!
Tatiana says
I really liked the Armani CC cream. I would layer it over a somewhat tinted SPF/primer like the very fluid one from Shiseido that Dear Husband picks up for me in Tokyo or the Chanel Le Blanc. I want to say it has some menthol or something else that feels very cooling on your skin. Used to love that feeling, but lately my skin has been reacting to everything, so I’ve been using the Armani less and less. I used to get so many compliments on my skin when I wore it. I’ve been reaching for one of the Missha BB creams (available from the US Missha website or Sokoglam website) or the NARS tinted moisture. The glowy one. I think I’m too lined and dry for the matt one.
Karen says
Sweet. I think I might like it, then. There’s an Armani counter at the Nordstrom in Southern Marin so I’ll check it out next time I’m there. 🙂 Thank you for the recommendation!
I like that old school NARS tinted moisturizer too, by the way. Dust a little bit of MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural on top and it’s magic.

Efrain says
1. When was the last time you went all out with your makeup?
For Mother’s day but even day it was a fast one because I ran to my sister’s school to reserve to seats for Mother’s Day Festival. My sister was a gorgeous cheerleader.
2. What was the last goofy thing you did?
Sending a friend a selfie wearing a hot pink lipstick and doing a funny face.
3. When was the last time you checked an online social network and which one was it?
Twitter five minutes ago. Does WhatsApp counts as a social network?
4. How do you feel about full-coverage foundation?
I think that unless you have perfect skin (lucky you in that case), it’s a good idea to have one for parties and photos but for everyday I prefer something lighter.
5. Should you trust your instincts?
Most of the time, even though sometimes I use my instinct to buy makeup and it’s more of a way to justify a purchase.
Karen says
Hi Efrain,
I hope you’ve been enjoying your break. Any good news from the interviews yet?
Becky says
1. When was the last time you went all out with your makeup?
I live in the middle of remote Madagascar right now, so if in going to be at home for a while I am going ALL OUT CRAZY on the makeup, just for fun. I’m talking full on drag. It’s great!
2. What was the last goofy thing you did?
Oh, I’m always doing daft stuff. My husbands a real practical joker, so I got my own back by cling-film wrapping the top of his bowl for breakfast the other morning. Milk and cereal everywhere!
3. When was the last time you checked an online social network and which one was it?
Twitter, about 5 seconds ago. #Bloglife!
4. How do you feel about full-coverage foundation?
I gotta say, with oily skin, my ride or die for a long time was Estée Lauder double wear. Super full coverage, but stays on ALL DAY. I still love it, but I’m getting on board with less coverage now as my acne has improved. Real skin looks beautiful!
5. Should you trust your instincts?
Every time! Go with your gut!

How interesting that you live in Madagascar! How long have you been there?

Hi Karen!
I’ve been here for 7 months now. I’ll be heading back to the UK at the end of June. I’ll be sad to go, it’s an amazing place!
Karen says
That’s cool that you had a chance to live there for a while. Are you there for work?
Becky says
Yes – I’m a veterinarian, so I’m volunteering in the north of the country, doing some work and some teaching. It’s great! My husband is a doctor so he’s working at a little hospital here. Quite different to the UK but it’s good! It’s a beauuuutiful country!
Karen says
Wow, that’s amazing! I’ve always wondered what it would be like to live and work in another country. Lucky you that you were able to have that experience. What will you miss most about living there?
