You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”
Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- What’s your favorite article of clothing?
Honestly…right now? At 40 weeks pregnant (OMG)? It’s anything with stretch. But when I’m not “with child,” it’s my gold and black cat dress. It has pockets and, more importantly, silhouettes of BIG CATS.
- What expression do you overuse?
GUUUURL.I mean, that’s the one I overuse: “gurl.”
I also perennially abuse the word “holla,” pronounced haw-la.
- If you had to move to a new city, where would you move?
My practical side says someplace completely out of the Bay Area, where the cost of living is lower and you can get more house bang for your buck, but my heart says Honolulu… - What are five words that describe your day today so far?
Sunny, long, quiet, green, tiring - Messy or neat?
Neat in theory; messy in practice.
Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!
1. What’s your favorite article of clothing?
2. What expression do you overuse?
3. If you had to move to a new city, where would you move?
4. What are five words that describe your day today so far?
5. Messy or neat?
Hey love,
If you have a second, could you please send some good vibes my way? I’m trying really hard to pay attention to the flowers and trees, fruit and vegetables in my metaphorical garden…but I’m on the brink of having a moment.
They say that when you get to this stage of being massively pregnant, you are just totally and completely over it. And they’re right!
Anyway, I’ve reached that point.
I’m trying to hold it together, but I’m not doing very well. I know that every day she’s in there, she gets stronger, yadda-yadda-yadda, but I can’t hold back the tears. I just don’t feel good, in every meaning of the word.
So, if you could please send kind words, rainbows and/or kittens my way, that would be really nice.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict who’s been seriously ready to pop for DAYS,
Karen

Shannon says
Sending loves, hugs, and comfort, Karen! Hoping you can rest in this moment before BG comes – because she WILL come, eventually – and know that it won’t last forever. And if tears are what you need right now, freakin cry em out, man!! Let those suckers be part of this moment, too, if they’re insisting they be part of it. <3 <3
Oh, right – and the poll:
1. What’s your favorite article of clothing?
At the moment, it's a pair of black Born boots I've been wearing all winter. They go with freakin everything.

oh, gosh. I have to pick just one? 😉 "totally" is a repeat offender, I think. and "sweeeet." and "dude." I think I'm a stoned surfer at heart, lol.

A new city… hmm. I'd probably go for somewhere warm, like maybe LA? Or maybe overseas – I could totally live in Dublin or London, I think.

I second the words of your friend above. If crying is what you need, then cry. Let it all out. You deserve it. I can’t imagine what this feels like. But try & remember that it’ll be over soon and sooooo worth it. This is your marathon. You’re on the last leg of it & you can see the end in sight. And the joy that you’ll experience will outweigh this rough stretch & make it all worth it. Treat yourself to Netflix & chill (in bed!). Sending much love & rainbows & (Pegasus) my little ponies & Krispy Creme glazed donuts your way. Much love, dude 🙂

4. What are five words that describe your day today so far?
Tired, windy, cumbersome, craving and waiting.
5. Messy or neat?
Neat. But it is a loosing battle with a husband and a toddler around.

Leah G. says
I love Heidelberg! 🙂
LindaLibraLoca says
You have been there? Awesome.
I love it too, but I was born and raised there, so it isn’t as exciting as London would be.
Leah G. says
I went there as part of a vacation in the fall of 2014. I have not been to London yet but it’s on the wish list.
LindaLibraLoca says
The last time I went there was years ago, but I have great memories of London.

4. What are five words that describe your day today so far? Slow. I wish it was still the weekend!
5. Messy or neat? I’m a combination of both. My office at work is neat but there’s parts of my house that are cluttered. I try to stay as neat as possible though.

Carolyn says
Hi Karen, it sucks that you’re feeling crappy. I hope you’re getting lots of rest and trying to relax as much as possible while you’re waiting for BG. Start chowing down on some spicy foods or take a long waddle around the block to hopefully give her the hint to get going!

2. What expression do you overuse?
Probably depends on my mood.
3. If you had to move to a new city, where would you move?
ROME!!! No thoughts needed. Don’t care about practicality or anything else. From the second I stepped foot in Rome, I knew that was where my heart truly felt at home.
4. What are five words that describe your day today so far?
Boring, slow, quiet, cold… oh did I say boring? Counting down the minutes til I’m done work for the day.

A little of both…I love organization but with 2 small children and 2 cats, it’s more like controlled chaos
Good news is if you have reached the point where you are “completely over it” and possibly miserable…the little one will arrive soon. Every single time I’ve been there, the baby showed up quickly.
Jennifer says
Awww sweetie, I’ve been thinking about you. Try to rest as much as you can. I know it’s hard because you must feel too uncomfortable to do ANYTHING.
Sending you lots of love!!!
Nicole - paleandfreckled says
Sending hugs, baby cuddles, toddler belly laughs and kisses! Sometimes for me a good tear jerker movie can be cathartic in those moments, releases some of that energy but without focusing on how miserable I feel personally.
Sparkled Beauty says
Hang in there, Karen. It will soon be so worth it!
Katie says
1. What’s your favorite article of clothing?
Nightgowns/PJs if just for the fact that you don’t have to wear a bra. (You know that’s the truth, ladies.) A close second would be a well-worn pair of skinny denim jeans.
2. What expression do you overuse?
Oh, I use “GUUUURL” a lot, too. In texts, I exaggerate “Lol” with “Lololol” pretty often.
3. If you had to move to a new city, where would you move?
Being an S.F. Bay Area resident, same answer as Karen’s. I’d toss in Hawaii’s polar opposite, Seattle, too, as a dream city.
4. What are five words that describe your day today so far?
A bit melancholy, strangely also sunny, quiet, green, and tiring.
5. Messy or neat?
Karen’s answer just shows how much kinship I feel with her.
Sending tons of support and hugs your way, Karen! I’m in the same boat as you today as its my first day of unemployment and am feeling uneasy (but cautiously optimistic) about it. You, however, are SO close to reaching the end goal; seeing BG will make these darker times worth it.
Amy says
You are so loved and cared for, Karen, every step of the way. That includes right now. I’m holding to that for you. If the moment seems unbearably hard, look to the horizon. If you feel you can’t look up, think of one bit of gratitude, however silly or small – even if you have to scream and cry though it at first and it seems stupid to even try. Or don’t try, just let it be true. You are beautiful and loved.
Nikki says
Sending you positive thoughts your way and hoping you get to meet baby girl soon! I went into labor at 40w5d in the middle of August and the last week was misery so I can relate! Once she’s here you’ll forget all about how rough this final stretch was 🙂
Rachel R. says
1. What’s your favorite article of clothing? In general, sweaters. I can’t choose a single favorite clothing item.
2. What expression do you overuse? “Cool” and “awesome” (that one’s from being a teen in the 80s).

5. Messy or neat? Neat freak, but my kids are extremely messy, so I lose. lol
Hang in there, gurlll! You’re close to the finish line. Sending lots of virtual love and (((((((hugs))))))))).

Aww, Rachel! That bunny video is the CUTEST. Thank you for that and the love and hugs. I’m smiling now. 🙂
Rachel R. says
Yay!! 🙂
Susan says
Karen my first child was two weeks late! Back then they did not induce as much as they will now. I used to sit in my rocking chair with my doll from childhood and cry thinking my baby would never come! Ah, she is 36 years old now. Your patience will be rewarded when she is born beautiful and perfect in every way! Lots of hugs and good thoughts for you and bg.
Karen says
Oh, Susan! That’s exactly how I feel right when I’m crying — like she’ll never come! Even though I know in theory that’s not going to happen, it certainly feels that way. Thank you for the hugs and good thoughts. I’ll happily take them. 🙂
Christina says
Sending hugs your way! Hang in there! Baby Girl will be here soon, and all of this will just melt away as you are enveloped in joy and love!

Wishin you the best day and days ahead!

Sending kitties, rainbows and unicorns your way, Karen! The home stretch is ALWAYS the hardest, but it’ll be all worth it when you hold baby girl in your arms, promise!
Karen says
Hi Jen,
I didn’t think it would be this hard, you know? (Famous last words!) Thank you for letting me lean on you for a bit. 🙂
Fran says

Erica says
Dear Darling Karen – hang in there girl! Your sweet baby doll is heading towards you and her Poppa. She just has no interest in being a Leap Year baby. She has decided that March is more suitable for her. Cry, sleep, daydream and relax. You won’t have time for any of that once BG makes her appearance.
Favorite article of clothing: beautiful pajamas. No negligee- pajamas with a top and bottom. Soothing fabric: jersey, brushed cotton, silk.
I’ve been over doing 2 phrases : “get outta town” and a new phrase we’re using a lot at work “‘Lordt’, yep Lord with a “t” at the end. I think it’s trending on IG.
I’m a native NYC girl, what could be better than that? If I was forced to, I guess I could try Paris for 3 weeks, but I’d just be homesick for my dirty, wonderful, loud, crazy town.
I just treated myself to a new luxury car today so my words are : busy, exhilarating, guilt ridden, deserving and tired. I made sure to run errands and do laundry using my old geezer before the trade – ha,ha!
I’ve been messy all month, but I started spring cleaning this weekend.
Hang in there girl!
Karen says
Congrats on your new car, Erica! How wonderful! Enjoy that new car smell, ahh…
And thank you very much for sending over those good vibes. I guess we’re gonna have a March baby on our hands. 🙂
Ruchita says
Sending hugs your way. Praying for strength both physically and mentally for this last stretch of the journey. Take care! <3
Karen says
I’ll happily take those hugs and prayers, Ruchita! Thank you. 🙂

Leggings! They really are too comfortable for words!
2. What expression do you overuse?
“Knock it off!” 🙂 It’s my favorite thing to say if something is super silly to me.
3. If you had to move to a new city, where would you move?
I’m not sure…..I think I’d try my hand at living somewhere in California.
4. What are five words that describe your day today so far?
Long, cloudy (outside), cheerful, good, warm
5. Messy or neat?
Neat in my head and heart…….messy in real life!

Thank you for the sweet words, Kellee. 🙂
Kellee says
You’re very welcome! 🙂
Rosemary says
Fav article of clothing: anything velvet.
Yep, the “I’ll be pregnant forever” phase of pregnancy. I know it well. I was two weeks past my due date, the doc told me he’d induce me on Friday. On Friday morning, I had signs of labor, so I trotted happily off to the hospital. Only to be sent home. Sent home!!!! Well, lemme tell you, I called the doctor’s office and told the nurse to inform the doctor that I’d phone him when I could look down and see the baby’s head! LOL! Man, I was mad! I had light labor all day and night. Saturday it was getting heavy, but I refused to go to the hospital! My husband at that time finally dragged me to the hospital that afternoon. But ya know what? My little boy didn’t show up until late that night. (Delivered by another doctor, btw. I guess mine was too scared to show up!)
Anyway, hope this brought a smile. Do whatever you can to feel happy–watch movies, chill with El Hub, read, etc. Because, honey, when BG makes her appearance and needs you every second, you’ll be grateful you can brush your teeth!
xo

Oh sending lots of mom loves and hugs, today! You are so close! The “I’m over it!” vibe means you are ready for the next step! Take some slow deep breaths. You are ready, but your little one hasn’t decided to make an appearance yet. As a parent, we often have to hold back something we want or need for our kids, and it can be this frustrating. That is so normal. Try to relax (I know you aren’t comfortable!). I’m sure they have you walking around a little. Rest as much as you can. Your baby is a lot like Tabs. She will be out when she feels like it.
1. What’s your favorite article of clothing? I have a denim skirt that I wear way too much. I have nicer clothes in my closet. I am going through and seeing what I need to alter.
2. What expression do you overuse? I have one, but I can’t put that on a PG site, lol! I have cut way down on it, though.
3. If you had to move to a new city, where would you move? I am hoping to move back to the South, maybe Memphis. I miss the sunny weather. I am so over the rainy Pacific Northwest.
4. What are five words that describe your day today so far? Quiet, creepy, paperwork, legalese, “are we done yet”
5. Messy or neat? Both Mostly neat, but in the middle of a project it can look like a tornado hit my desk. and no one better touch it either. I know where everything it.
Tatiana says
1. What’s your favorite article of clothing? Jeans. Inexpensive ones from the GAP because they fit my very short, unmodel-like body.
2. What expression do you overuse? Nothing comes to mind.
3. If you had to move to a new city, where would you move? If I had to move probably out of the bay area. I’d love to go back to NYC. Then again, I’d like to live in London or Paris or Tokyo or Sydney or Wellington, NZ.
4. What are five words that describe your day today so far? Slow, but picking up steam.
5. Messy or neat? I’d love to be neat, but in reality I’m messy, messy, messy.
I completely remember how miserable I was my last week of pregnancy. And it was ages ago. So I’m sending you lots of loving, feel better vibes. I’m also sending some vibes to baby girl letting her know it’s time to come into this world and that she is already loved by so many people and we are waiting to meet her. Hugs to you. If I was up in the north bay, I’d stop by to give you a quick back massage. (I remember how much my lower back and hips hurt at 40 weeks)
Sandy Pincombe says
Oh sweet Karen, I am so sorry that sweet pea is being stubborn. She just is enjoying her nice warm place with Mama! But I really know how you feel. My youngest son was the same way. His due date was Jan. 12th. Right before Christmas my doctor said “get ready” as you will deliver any day. So went through holidays and no baby. He came right on his due date and weighed 9lbs 2oz. So you may deliver a big baby and that is why they thought you would deliver in February. Sending {{hugs}}
alice says
You’re almost there! The thing that got me through the last days of being preggo was taking stock of my life as it was then. I took note of just being with hubby. Never again will it just be the two of you…that kind of thing.
Do voice your concerns to your obgyn, they may induce you or something. (they this thing called “scraping your membrane” on me. It’s supposed to help speed things along, though it didn’t work for me.) I delivered at almost 42 weeks. If that makes you sad, then let your obgyn know. Baby. Out NOW!
Funny thing: I was induced at 8am. I had mild and irregular contractions all day long. When my baby finally decided to make her appearance at 11 PM ($%^$#@!!!). I PUSHED. My midwife was impressed. I was like “Um yeah, I”m not waiting another 12 hours for her traipse on out of me!”
Danielle says
There’s nothing like parenting: it’s the best thing in the world, until it’s the worst. And there’s no getting around it, under it, over it, or past it; you just gotta get through it. But in your own way – teary, joyful, messy, loud, silent – you do you. And we will all cheer and root for you and tell you we’ve seen worse, because we have.
Hugs and kisses to you and BG!
Mary says
So excited for you, soon you’ll have that wonderfully beautiful babygirl in your arms!
Bex D says
Awww. Karen you are in my thoughts. I haven’t children but my sister has a 2yr old and she felt the same as you by the end. She went to 42 weeks before they induced her in the end and now we have a beautiful little Pickle in the world. I hope that you feel soothed by the lovely comments from everyone. It sounds like you need a good sob. Take it easy and I really hope it all happens soon for you ?? here are some flowers to brighten your day xx
Colleen says
Love and Hugs from me and my 3 cats – Chunk, Brit, & Chunk. We all have your back! Holla:)
Sherry says
Prayers and hugs for you Karen. You’re getting close, that’s why you feel that way. Hormones are a strange thing. I’m going through something similar, believe it or not. I just turned 49 and menopause is kicking my butt. I want to cry just like I did when I was pregnant. I’m hoping it passes. Anyway, you hang in there. I bet you’ll be seeing your baby girl in a few days. All the best!!
Jennifer says
Hang in there doll baby! She is clearly a diva and is only going to make her entrance when you’ve stopped watching. Paco Rabanne sends kisses and purrs and tum rubs. He’s got a squishy, white fur belly and is totally jealous of yours 🙂

1. What’s your favorite article of clothing?
A pair of jeans by Levi’s that I bought a couple years ago. They were called Revel but I think they don’t do them anymore.
2. What expression do you overuse?
“like”. I think I say like too much…
3. If you had to move to a new city, where would you move?
Paris, San Francisco, New York, London… I’m pretty open but I prefer large cities.
4. What are five words that describe your day today so far?
Sunny, hot, beach, Pacific, travel. I’m visiting the Monterey area!
5. Messy or neat?
I try to be neat but I’m really messy at heart… I wish my house could be always tidy and clean, but it’s just never happening!
Sorry you’re feeling down Karen, I’m sure it’s incredibly hard, but you’re almost there! It’s just a question of hours now, and then you’ll be able to see your feet again! 🙂

1. What’s your favorite article of clothing?
No categories? What an impossible question! Um, these really soft, flattering dark wash jeans that…still haven’t been hemmed so I’ve not worn them yet.
2. What expression do you overuse?
The old one was “like” which I’ve been using nonstop for years. Lately, however, I find myself consistently uttering “Geeze Louise”, probably to wean myself from habitual excessive cursing.
3. If you had to move to a new city, where would you move?
San Francisco or Carmel Valley, in a heartbeat.
4. What are five words that describe your day today so far?
Silly, quiet, nostalgic, remorseful, sad
5. Messy or neat?
Organized mess — it looks messy, but I know where everything is. Unfortunately, if I stow too many items in a closet, I totally forget ever they existed.
Karen, let the tears flow when they need to. You are stronger than you think.
Sending love, hugs and all happiness to you, the BG, El Hubs and the inimitable Señor Tabs!

1. What’s your favorite article of clothing? Would have to be one of my Marshall Rousso tops – I am fanatical about that shop! Wish it wasn’t 4 hours away – I can only go once every few months! (When I am going up there anyway)
2. What expression do you overuse? “Whateva”
3. If you had to move to a new city, where would you move? Atlantic City, no hesitation!!! Beaches, great shopping, celebrity chefs, nightlife, amusement park, casinos – I want to start packing just thinking about it!
4. What are five words that describe your day today so far? “P.O. Box haul says it all!” (MAC, Makeup Geek, Amazon = yasssss!)
5. Messy or neat? It depends… if it’s a room I spend a lot of time in I want it relatively neat. But if I don’t, all bets are off!

I’m a day late with the fluffy clouds and unicorns and, I’m guessing, you feel at least a bit “smaller” in the belly by now. 🙂 I hope everything is going well. Can’t wait for and update on how you’re doing – all good vibes are being sent your way until then!!
1. What’s your favorite article of clothing? Right now, my winter jacket.
2. What expression do you overuse? I was recently told it was “you know what I mean?” which I hadn’t noticed. Also, the long standing “it’s true!”. I think the kids would say it’s “enough!”.
3. If you had to move to a new city, where would you move? City life is not for me but, internationally, I love Rome. Domestically, probably Boston on the East Coast and (if money was no object), somewhere on the ocean in California. 🙂
4. What are five words that describe your day today so far? Rushed and I don’t have time for the other four. HAHA!
5. Messy or neat? Cluttered where you can see it and organized where you can’t. The opposite of most people. Sigh.

5. Messy or neat? I’m naturally messy, but I can’t function without organization.
